Let me tell you what the Warriors "found" in the 4th quarter
So Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors think they found something Tuesday night in the fourth quarter against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
They did. But it's probably not what they think they found.
What I saw watching the game is what I see all the time in the NBA. When a team falls behind in a big game -- and falls behind by a large margin as the Warriors did (20 points) -- they tend to get some help from the referees to get back in the game.
That help usually isn't completely obvious. It's not as if you get more free throws. It's more in the area of what's NOT called. You can steal the ball while committing a foul, here and there. You can get away with some things on the boards. The referees climb aboard the momentum train and the game gets closer.
But beware, teams that take advantage of that to cut 20-point leads to a single point: It doesn't last. They'll get you back into the game, but then you're on your own. And that's what happened Tuesday night. Golden State got back in it, but once it got the game down to a single possession, they no longer had that extra help. Suddenly, the Cavs were getting to the foul line again, getting calls on the boards and getting a fair shake again. And the Warriors were not good enough to win the game.
And yes, this has been going on for years. I believe it's either just human nature to help the underdog or game officials are somehow encouraged to do this -- I've seen it too many times to doubt its existence.
So use what happened in the fourth quarter at your own peril, Warriors. I wouldn't advise getting behind by 20 points again. Golden State has the best team but the Cavaliers are playing better basketball. And playing harder. And that's the lesson the Warriors need to learn -- that it must quit posturing and get tougher.
