Official JUSTIFIED Discussion Thread UPDATE: They BACK new mini series! Justified: City Primeval

Justified Adds Three New Cast Members

Justified showrunner Graham Yost is making good on his plan to integrate more of Elmore Leonard's characters into the show's forthcoming seasons following the creator’s passing earlier this year. FX’s outlaw drama has added three new cast members to its fifth season, all part of the fictional Crowe family, which Yost told Deadline “is a big part of [Leonard’s] world.”

TV Line reported that Michael Rapaport will play ex-convict and gator farm owner Dale Crowe, Jr., a “smart, ruthless and charismatic patriarch of a Florida crime family who will face off against Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) in the upcoming season.”

Playing Crowe’s smart, sexy paralegal sister Wendy is Alicia Witt, a character who “dickers with Raylan to cut a nice deal for Dale, in exchange for essentially nothing tangible, and enjoys outmaneuvering the Kentucky lawman,” according to Deadline.

Then there’s Edi Gathegi (last seen on ABC’s Family Tools), who’ll play Jean Baptiste, a Haitian criminal in in charge of the Crowe family gator farm and former member of the Haitian secret police who “has a coldly merciless attitude when it comes to disposing of both gators and humans.” Hold tight for all the Dixie drama when season five airs in early 2014.
Wow nice adds... I love this show

damn

Justified is one of those shows that I like to watch 3-4 episodes at a time because I hate waiting from week to week.

Fantastic crime fiction

i havent watched tonight's episode but last season was amazing and the writing so far this sit is nothing short of top notcheason has been outstanding

these guys know how to write crime fiction

you are lying and I mean I just got on to the show last week.I got sick on Friday and have been marathon watching the show since then and I was off Monday and Today so I watch some more. Man this show has some of the best writing I have ever seen it's fast it's quick it's cool. The episode where he threw the bullet at Wynn Duffy "next one's coming faster" but then the episode 8 when he explained to the cop and the cop paused and said, "that's about the coolest thing I've ever laid years on"

Damn. I'm just on season 3 episode 8, but I have got to say the writing in this show the banter between the characters, it is nothing short of top-notch writing.

I saw one episode before kinda passing by it on TV and was intrigued.the episode where Raylan ran over the guy with the car them backed up over him again & Boyd shot Devil. I finally decided to watch it from the beginning and I've been hooked. the sister marshal with the fat ass, Tim a smartass sniper Marshal that messes with him because its fun and he's bored, even the boss Art has an attitude. everybody's got their own personality and I like it. Good damn show good damn show

I love it how the show follows up. I mean when Dickey got out of jail at the end of season 2 it was some old lady that came out of nowhere and may the other guy confessed to everything. Nobody knew who she was where she came from or why, and they didn't say anything about where she came from until Season 3 episode 10. I mean seriously that is some good follow-up everything is it wrapped up a nice neat little bow sometimes you don't find out stuff until a good while later. That is excellent writing. There are so many other things that don't follow up or get followed up immediately and then you almost forget about them and then they pop up a few episodes later. Great writing on the show

Boyd is actually MORE dangerous.

I n my opinion.

Cause that boy got a code a twisted moral compass.

Almost like a cracked mirror reflection of Omar from the Wire.

His shit aint based just on fear, greed or power.

Deep done he knows he is messed up but feels he is "justified".

very excellent analysis of Boyd Crowder

i know its only like 2 ppl who watch this show but GOD DAMN was this episode eventful to see the least.
more ppl died in the last hour of television than I can anything i can remember.

and damn Arlo has no fucks to give, even on his death bed. Went out like a G and Raylan was the reason he was caught yes boys got lucky that railing was there to save his tailin the crossfires. The show aint gonna be the same without him.

Once again Boyd stayed one step ahead of his rivals but Raylan came through by pure coicncicdence to save his ass. Now Boyd taking credit for everything and bout to cash out til he cross Theo (who no one is bigger than other than God & Uncle Sam)

Boyd got lucky that Raylan was there to save his tail because that assassin was there to take them out. I'm going to miss Arlo. he was a bad ass old dude. Gave no fux even in the end. "Kiss...my...ass" on his deathbed. Not even mentioning the fact that he played comatose then beat down the two guys. Im gonna miss the old coot

They were pulling mad camera tricks to make Yolo's punches hardcore and more intense, showing even Boyd was on the ropes behind Yolo's interrogation, all to emphasize the beating Bob took and didn't break under.

" They circled the wagons! " Was my favorite quote until . . . " Drew-Bacca "!
like you said, they circled the wagons and then drewbacca? oh I rewound that about 5 times. that dude has some heart.most people would have given up information already, but what sense does it make when you know they're going to kill you anyway
^

the writing is so OUTSTANDING...

i could just LISTEN to the dialogue like an audiobook...

my part is Raylan and Boyd having a casual conversation about HS and that astronaut.

WHO THE HELL DOES THAT?!?!?
I know, chopping it up like they were in a bar. Who does that? The dialogue I hope when I get good I can write dialogue that great
Yeah ya did. The second Colt told Mort, " I was wrong I see Drew! " and then Mort's dumb ass gave up his long rifle, you knew Mort was dead!
yep, I saw that one coming as soon as he gave him a gun I was like yep he's toast.
This show is one of the many reasons I can't fuck with network t.v. anymore. All of the really innovative scripted programming has moved to cable.

This season is off the hook. I knew I was in for a ride when dude in the whore house got shot by Ellen Mae while dressed up in the bear costume. Definite step up from last season, which wasn't that bad.

The last three episodes have had so many "oh shit" moments, from Arlo kickin' it, to Drew Thompson, to the circling of the wagons... and more Erica Tazel which is always a good thing.

I wonder if they can keep it going, because last night was good as one hour dramas get.

Yeah, this has got to be top 3 best dialogue on television. It's based on an Elmore Leonard work and they've really stayed with his voice and the intricate way he draws characters. Everyone, even the most minor players like Constable Bob, has their own memorable voice.

Art's monologue about Drew Thompson being a bad ass, and Arlo's last words to his son: "Kiss my ass." ...classic...

everything you said from arts monologue about drew being a bad ass. Arlo saying kiss my ass on his deathbed his last words. The dialogue in this show is top notch filled with Easter eggs, I mean filled with Easter eggs. Art, Rachel & Raylan are in the house talking about a gunfight on the Wild Bunch I mean there are so many instances where you look up things that they talk about on the show and its real stuff. I've watched the entire series in < 2 weeks

Michael Rapaport has a crappy southern accent. it's funny the Brits and the Australians they can all drop their accent and found like they're from somewhere else but most New Yorkers...just can't lose the New York

Raglan is a terrible lawman. He beat up Dewey so bad he received 300k, he helped Sammie Tonenen take over the Detroit operation which gave Boyd access, then he removed Daryl Crowes parole and leaked info to his Haitian friend so they now have incentive to leave Florida for Kentucky.

All his girls are fucked up too...Winona & child left for Mia because he can't protect them, his bartender blonde is AWOL, and Ava is in prison for trying to make him jealous.

He's a tornado that destroys everything he touches

Nah that is the Sons of Anarchy

Raylan is more the guy that if he had not joined law enforcement would have been Boyd.

Every one knows Raylan is a terrible Marshal he had been working on it, but situations have him back tracking.

first The Haitian has arrived

Why in all these shows does the character have to be referred to as THE HAITIAN???
:hmm:

Cause the Canadians were real Canadians

back to the subject at hand

Raylan is one of the best marshal's.

Problem is he is more like Boyd then he is ever willing to admit.

They are the same man but its that little itch of conscious that separates them.

And watching every episode and reading the books...

he is human and makes mistakes which is what makes him so compelling.

but don't for a minute think Raylan didn't deliberately drop the thing about the 300K.

Boyd is stealing this show man...

and the writing.

Its stuff like this that makes me delete pages and pages of work after hours/days of writing.

Notice the completely divergent story lines and they still told a complete story dropped breadcrumbs foreshadowing references to last season and was smart and funny and pretty much introduced and killed some really potentially great characters.

In about an hour.

damn

And loved seeing Ava.

Rappaport really got to work on that accent...The Haitian too.

They dont know no better. Bad Boys 2 was so annoying "The Haitian Zoe Pound" like there is others. :smh:

Very true. And Rapaports accent is very shitty.

Nah. You couldnt be more wrong on his character. All these characters are flawed on their own. He isnt a poison individual that infects everything in his vincinity...these people are already flawed and broken. Keep in mind Winona was married to a corrupt business that Raylan had to save her from. That had nothing to do with Raylan. The bartender blonde was a scam artist, and Ava was married to a Crowder even before her and Raylan smashed. He isnt the source of any of these peoples condition. They are all varying degrees of hillbillies in the literally sense and all come carrying their own baggage.

damn after next season :itsawrap:

FX just announced the sixth, 2015 season will be the last for “Justified.”

Which is too short but still twice as long as Tim Olyphant’s “Deadwood.”

This assumes FX orders a sixth season, which it has not yet.

Announcement came at FX’s TCA event in Pasadena.

FX confirms 'Justified' will end next season

Justified.jpg

FX Networks CEO John Landgraf made it official at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena on Tuesday. The executive portrayed the decision as one made by the showrunner Graham Yost and star Timothy Olyphant.
“We talked about it a year ago and they felt that the arc of the show and what they had to say would be served by six seasons instead of seven and I regretfully accepted their decision,”
he said.
This still means fans get nearly two more seasons of the show, since season five just started this month.

:crymeariver:

But I respect it...

It is rare to have a nearly flawless series like this continue for longer.

'Justified' Star Timothy Olyphant on Racism and Rural America

Earlier today, FX announced that their Western drama Justified will conclude next year, ending the series' run at six seasons. But for lead actor Timothy Olyphant, this was already in the works. "I imagine we'll wrap it up soon," he told Rolling Stone last week. "Whenever it ends, I'll just count my lucky stars. Good gig. It's hard to get your hands on this kind of character and this kind of writing."

21 Soaring Highs and Awkward Lows From the Golden Globes

Still, the news is bittersweet. Justified has gained a substantial audience over the last four years, a remarkable feat considering that the show is based on a lone Elmore Leonard short story ("Fire in the Hole"). For Olyphant, 45, the series has afforded him the opportunity to carry a series as Raylan Givens, a Kentucky-based U.S. Marshal with a knack for witty comebacks and a desire to set things right – even if it means pulling the occasional trigger. Olyphant spoke to Rolling Stone about racism, the modern west and replica Stetson hats from his home in Los Angeles.

Relive the 20 Best TV Moments of 2013

When you were first thinking about Raylan, what was critical to get across to the viewer?
I sound like an idiot. I start there. Then after that, the job is always the same. You've got to be funny, but you can't acknowledge it. Elmore is a delicate dance. It tends to be light on its feet and every now and then, you go a little deeper and look for the unexpected.

Plots have changed, but Raylan continues to be a man who's comfortable in his own skin.
That's the trick of the show: How do you keep this character relevant and interesting? And at the same time not blow it up in the process. The world in which Raylan lives – he's not going to move that much. The nature of that character is pretty much going to be Raylan. Last year we did a great jobs in taking some risks with the death of Arlo [Givens' father, played by Raymond J. Barry]. And this year we're doing interesting things with Raylan and Art [Givens' boss, played by Nick Searcy]. One of the things about Elmore's world is that there's always a theme of professionalism that runs through it. His characters are defined by it, they're good at what they do and they take their jobs seriously.

Is Raylan an anti-hero or just a hero-hero?
I don't know. Maybe it's a little bit of a grey area. He seems to be happy at his job, he enjoys his work, and every now and then he gets to kill someone.

It's part of the job description.
Talk to a lot of Marshals and a lot of them tell you the way they came to the job is that they didn't know the Marshals existed. But they told me "they'd give me a gun, a badge and the pay was pretty good – I'd give it a shot." Raylan seems to be all into that.

He presents himself as a major badass. Do other Marshals say that this is accurate?
There's some acknowledgement that they're a bunch of cowboys out there chasing people down. I've met my fair share and there's a number of them out there that seem to be. . . I don't know if thrill-seekers is the word, but they enjoy the chase. I can say that some of that dialogue we've used over the years came out of some Marshals' mouths. Things like, "Waking up everyday and looking forward to fucking someone's day up." [Laughs] I didn't made that up! I heard that!

Have you been a gun person your whole life?
No, not really. I shot my brother with a BB gun and I've killed my fair share of gophers with a .22. But not beyond that.

When you're working on a show like Justified, do actors keep gun choreographers?
Some of the guys on the set are pretty good with a gun. We got a camera operator who's in that. . . what's that badass little group over there in Israel? He was one of those guys. And every now and then he gives me some tips. Oh, and our prop guys are great. They know how to handle a guy.

Is Justified an accurate portrayal of modern rural America?
Lots of the stuff we've got going on is going on. There's crime and shit-kickers and backward-ass white trash. I hate to tell you, but racism is alive and well in a lot of parts of the world. I'm guilty of when I first read this five years ago, I remember asking myself, "God, is this going to feel dated?" But between that and shooting the pilot, I realized there is nothing dated about this at all. That was right at the height of Congressmen accusing each other of being racist; people were talking about a "Black president." Racism was a big topic then. We were outside Pittsburgh and people would tell me that the Klan was alive and well in those parts. I don't know if we've tackled that issue as of late, but I know when we started, it was big.

Raylan seems to get women with ease. Do guys ever ask your advice?
No! [Laughs.] I'm happy to help out whenever I can, but I've been married 23 years. I don't know if I'm the best person to ask.

At any given moment, how many Stetsons are on set?
One.

Just one?!
No, I take that back. We have two.

I was worried. If someone spilled tomato juice on it you'd be screwed.
Over the holidays, our costumer took the hat and asked if it was okay to have it refit. "It's taking a heck of a beating." So I said, "Of course," and she said, "God, I had the hat at my house and I was constantly locking the doors. . . I can't be the person who loses that hat."

Did you know they sell a replica hat on FX's website?
They sell a replica?

I'll tell you two things about the hat. One, it costs $144.95.
Oh no. . .

Two, the opening description of it says "experience the animal magnetism."
[Laughs.]

Do you have anything lined up for 2014?
No. I need to get a job. I think its time.

Has Justified led to any bigger auditions?
No, and I think that's what I'm getting at. What its led to is me spending summers sitting by the pool, walking the dog and driving the kids around. It's really an unacceptable way to continue. [Laughs] I need to go get some other kind of work.

First time I've seen Wood & Steve Harris together on a show

Yup. Avon Barksdale and Snotboogie (Steve was Snotboogie on the very first episode of The Wire in the beginning, the very beginning before the credits.)

glad they're getting a chance to work together that's pretty cool. This show as hot as hell I was surprised that people want talking about it on this site yet as far as the season.as much as I love this show I am glad that it's going out still being good and not like Dexter dragging on. the writing on this show really give me something to aspire to

Man the writing is the best. Raylin lines are gold and I can quote every word out of Byod's mouth. This truly is my favorite TV Show.

"I've been to Iraq it's a lot like Detroit except you have better music" Damn Boyd Crowder. they make one liners that don't sound corny and there's a ton of one liners. it's funny that Raylan Givens and Boyd Crowder are like twins separated at birth, one is the good twin kinda evil other one is the evil twin. Raylan has a code though, and Boyd Crowder is cold is pretty much don't get in my way but things that he does are justified pardon the pun

you can already tell this season is gonna be cray-cray
Boyd about to dump Ava ...or at least fool around on her....He always been 100% devoted

I dont think so, He tried to beat a dude to death over her.

"I'll put four of you down before you clear your guns, and I will take my chances with the other two" - That is a bad mother fucker.

That was before wifey pushed up on him....Looked him dead in the eyes. Something is gonna happen between those two
Something to shake the foundation of his relationship. Make Ava do something to save herself perhaps.

yes Rayland is badass. Gotta respect him. Son don't never flinch
