Xbox chief Phil Spencer: "Microsoft needed a reboot"

jpg

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has delivered an impassioned speech on the need for inclusivity within the games industry and discussed how Microsoft's gaming division has evolved over recent years.

The talk - which is embedded below and well worth a watch - also offers a frank account of Spencer's first few months in his current role as Xbox chief following the troubled launch of Xbox One.

"It was obvious Microsoft needed a reboot," Spencer admitted. "Morale had hit a low, we were all massively frustrated we kept missing big trends. In some ways, it felt like real innovation was impossible. And the in-fighting and fiefdoms were so famous, people made fun of it. Which would have been funny, if it hadn't been so true."

Microsoft needed a refresh on how it communicated with its customers - but also how it communicated internally, too, Spencer continued:

"Everything is changing - the way we relate to each other, to our partners and even to our competitors. The way we build teams, the way we build projects, the way we commit - every single day - to making Microsoft a safe and inclusive place for all.

"This was and is a deliberate, 100,000 person strong undertaking to craft the most innovative, the most representative and the most effective culture we possibly can so we can do the best work we can. This isn't culture for culture's sake, it's culture for collective impact.

"Cultural transformation is hard and demanding work. Four years into it, it's still sometimes incredibly slow and incredibly painful to get everyone on board, much less to admit your own biases. Four years into it, it still requires a growth mindset - a commitment to keep listening, keep learning, since cultural change is always ongoing."

Spencer became the leader of Microsoft's Xbox division at perhaps its lowest ebb - with the Xbox One in a tailspin and doubts even within the company that Microsoft could continue to compete.

"I'd been in the role a month when I had the oppurtunity to speak to everyone in the team at an all-hands meeting," Spencer recalled. "The team was in a world of pain, we hadn't done our best work with the announce of Xbox One, the product we'd built wasn't meeting the expectations of our customers, market share [was] taking a nosedive and it was painful to read all the headlines. Plus, most importantly, the [Xbox] team thought that the leadership team had gone totally tone deaf about what our customers were demanding from us.

"I knew I had to do more than just communicate our strategy to our customers, I had to win back our team's trust. So we chose to tell our team some confidential news we couldn't take public for a couple of months. As well as the strategy behind that decision, thousands of my team heard the news that day and the amazing thing is - word didn't leak. Not one tweet, not one forum post. That was a significant milestone in our journey to rebuild trust between the leaders and the team. It was about empathy, and addressing their worries and trusting them first."

Spencer's tenure as Xbox leader has seen the company begin to bounce back with the launch of services and products like Xbox Games Pass and Xbox One X. But it hasn't all been smooth sailing.

A Microsoft party at GDC 2016 which featured exotic dancers prompted a "justifiable and furious" backlash, Spencer said. The event was especially jarring as Microsoft had that year made a huge push to sponsor inclusivity at the event.

It was "an unequivocally wrong, unequivocally sexist, unequivocally intolerable choice", Spencer said. "The internal backlash was almost harsher. The easy thing would have been to sidestep responsibility. Instead, as a team we bet on who we were and what we stood for.

"We communicated that we did not tolerate any employee or any partner who creates an environment who enables or offends others. We bet on our own culture, and we communicated that we stand for inclusivity. And I personally committed to do better. For me, it's a leader's job to absorb the hit, to take responsibility and be clear on our culture - who we are and what we stand for. What made it easier for me to hold myself accountable was really believing in the growth mindset, believing deeply that failure - even and maybe especially public failure - is our best growth."

But for all the progress Microsoft has made, Spencer was clear there was still a long way to go:

"I think the biggest tension comes down to this: do we solve this the best we can right now, or work forever for the best solution? Did we figure this out? I think we're learning how to figure this out. I believe cultural success is an ongoing journey, because every success, every failure help discern the best of who we are. We keep at this cultural transformation because we know it enables our best work, that work is needed now, because we're here to here to empower all people and all organisations around the world to achieve more.

"It's our personal and corporate commitment to people of all genders, all abilities, all ethnicities and all geographies. It's our belief in what human ingenuity can build and accomplish - it's our quest.

"When we make mistakes and bump and collide into each other, the easy thing is to retreat - even deny there's a problem. Instead, we have to be humble. We have to be active learners, read, educate ourselves and learn about other people's journeys, and read some more. and then, better informed, we commit to leading with deliberate purpose. It's something I know I have to work on every single day."

New Enhanced Xbox 360 Titles And Feature Come To Xbox One Backward Compatibility

Bill Stillwell, Lead Program Manager on the Xbox Platform team, provides an update on the Backward Compatibility program including new enhanced Xbox 360 titles and a new feature.

940x528.jpg

Starting today, four new Xbox 360 titles will be enhanced for Xbox One X, which includes The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, Forza Horizon, Fable Anniversary and Crackdown, the newest addition available now in the Xbox One Backward Compatibility library. We’re also excited to release a new graphics setting for enhanced Xbox 360 titles on Xbox One X to give you more control over your gaming experience.

Xbox 360 games that are enhanced for Xbox One X run at a higher resolution and 9X the original pixel count on Xbox One X. The power of Xbox One X enables the Xbox 360 emulator to showcase the very best version of the game possible with the existing assets—all without touching the game code. Today’s additions join the seven previously released Enhanced Xbox 360 titles like Halo 3, Skate 3, and Gears of War 3 for a total of 11 Xbox One X Enhanced Xbox 360 games.

Here is the full list of Xbox 360 games that are in the Xbox One X Enhanced catalog:

When you play Enhanced Xbox 360 games on Xbox One X, you can now choose how to experience them—with enhanced graphics or in their original form. Enhanced graphics will be turned on by default, running your game with higher resolution, 9X the pixel count, increased texture details and antialiasing, allowing you to enjoy greater visual clarity than ever before. If you turn off the Graphics setting, the graphics will be comparable to the experience on Xbox One or Xbox One S. Here’s how to access the setting. Note, once you change the setting, you’ll need to restart the game:

  1. Press “View” and “Menu” buttons on the controller to pull up the Xbox 360 guide
  2. Navigate to “Settings” blade
  3. Select “Xbox One X Settings”

We’re thrilled with the continued excitement for Xbox One Backward Compatibility—the community has played more than 840 million hours of Xbox 360 games on Xbox One. Compatibility is important to Xbox, to developers and their games, and our community. Preserving the art form of video games is part of our DNA, which is why Xbox One is the only console designed to play the best games of the past, present and future. We’re excited to continue to deliver on our vision of compatibility and grow our current Backward Compatible library, which includes more than 460 Xbox 360 games, 11 Xbox One X Enhanced Xbox 360 titles, and 13 Original Xbox games.

Microsoft Says It's Fixed Xbox Bug That Exposes People's Real Names [UPDATE]

dpnrwyzhfjuimhvbx8oj.png

Xbox users have started to notice an unwelcome surprise: Their first and last names are suddenly visible to other people without their permission, a problem that Microsoft says it is fixing.

Redditor Nadia C. says she received a message this morning alerting her that, instead of her Xbox nickname made of emoji symbols, her real name was visible. When she fired up her Xbox, she noticed that tons of others’ names were visible, too: streamers, recent players, friends. “It’s a gaming platform, not Facebook,” she wrote. “I have no interest in strangers possibly knowing my whereabouts or whatever else they can get from knowing my real name.”

After Nadia posted her thread, dozens chimed in to say it happened to them, too. Many went into their Xbox account settings to evaluate their privacy. Many were concerned that angry strangers they’d played Call of Duty with would be able to track them down. Others said that their real names were still blocked. (For me, the “You can share your real name with friends of friends” appears to have been changed to was on “allow,” although I do not recall making that choice.)

“We’re actively working to address an issue some users may be experiencing with their profile,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Kotaku via e-mail when asked about this issue.

In an e-mail to Kotaku, Nadia added, “I started freaking out to be honest, I felt a little bit of anxiety and I started sweating... why? I’ve had a few experiences with people before, trolls, stalkers, or just teenagers bored out of their mind.”

Update—1:00 p.m., 3/2/17: Microsoft says they’ve fixed the bug.

There hasn't been a boxing game released since EA Sports Fight Night Champion came out in 2011.

But gamers will be overwhelmed to find out that Money is coming to their rescue.

The video game is expected to be for new generation consoles, including the Xbox One and Playstation 4.

Mayweather told TMZ Sports: "I'm working on my video game as we speak.

"Before I do anything, I have to have some ownership."

It has been rumoured that EA could be releasing a new "Fight Night" game, but Mayweather confirmed that he will not feature on it.

Since retiring after beating Conor McGregor in one of the biggest fights in history, the American superstar has been very busy.

When he's not counting his cash, he can be spotted jetting off around the world in his private jet.

As part of the celebrations for his 41st birthday, the former five-weight world champion showed off his £320,000 Rolls Royce.

And he even went roller-skating with rap king Drake at the World on Wheels roller rink in Los Angeles.

An Announcement from Massive Entertainment on The Division 2

1500x500_twitter_header_800x267_320185.jpg

What an incredible few years it's been for the team here at Massive! When we first began work on Tom Clancy's The Division, we knew we had something special and something we believed in so strongly that we wanted to make sure we got it right. We also knew we couldn't achieve that goal without your help.

Since the launch of The Division two years ago, we've remained focused on this philosophy. We continue to create more opportunities to interact directly with livestreams, ongoing surveys, and social media. We also introduced public test servers as a way of getting immediate feedback before integrating major features and changes into the game. We've never stopped wanting to make The Division better and our most recent 1.8 update is a testament to that, as seen from your overwhelming feedback and support.

All of these new features and experiences have made our team better, too. We're nimbler and better prepared to take action based on feedback. And now, more than ever before, we have a clear vision of what's important and what continues to make The Division a special experience for so many people. Following our Year 2 anniversary celebration, we're going to keep supporting that experience with new title updates that will bring new Global Events, Xbox One X enhancements, and more.

That said, we've always envisioned the story in the game we launched in 2016 as the beginning chapter in a larger saga, and today we're excited to share more info about what's next for The Division universe.

We're thrilled to announce that we are working on Tom Clancy's The Division 2, and that development will be led by Massive Entertainment in collaboration with Ubisoft Reflections, Red Storm Entertainment, Ubisoft Annecy, Ubisoft Shanghai and Ubisoft Bucharest. The Division 2 will be powered by an updated version of the Snowdrop engine that enables us to realize our ambitions for the sequel, but more importantly, we're also taking everything we learned over the past two years and applying it towards the sequel to make sure we get it right.

Part of that means recognizing your commitment to The Division. With that in mind, we're adding a new type of achievement called "Shields" to the game. Earning them will unlock special rewards in The Division 2 when it launches.

On behalf of all the teams at Ubisoft, we thank you for the support you've given us over the past two years, and we hope that our continued work will earn that support for many years to come. We can't wait to show you what we have in store for The Division 2 at E3 2018 in June. See you then!
