An Announcement from Massive Entertainment on The Division 2

1500x500_twitter_header_800x267_320185.jpg

What an incredible few years it's been for the team here at Massive! When we first began work on Tom Clancy's The Division, we knew we had something special and something we believed in so strongly that we wanted to make sure we got it right. We also knew we couldn't achieve that goal without your help.

Since the launch of The Division two years ago, we've remained focused on this philosophy. We continue to create more opportunities to interact directly with livestreams, ongoing surveys, and social media. We also introduced public test servers as a way of getting immediate feedback before integrating major features and changes into the game. We've never stopped wanting to make The Division better and our most recent 1.8 update is a testament to that, as seen from your overwhelming feedback and support.

All of these new features and experiences have made our team better, too. We're nimbler and better prepared to take action based on feedback. And now, more than ever before, we have a clear vision of what's important and what continues to make The Division a special experience for so many people. Following our Year 2 anniversary celebration, we're going to keep supporting that experience with new title updates that will bring new Global Events, Xbox One X enhancements, and more.

That said, we've always envisioned the story in the game we launched in 2016 as the beginning chapter in a larger saga, and today we're excited to share more info about what's next for The Division universe.

We're thrilled to announce that we are working on Tom Clancy's The Division 2, and that development will be led by Massive Entertainment in collaboration with Ubisoft Reflections, Red Storm Entertainment, Ubisoft Annecy, Ubisoft Shanghai and Ubisoft Bucharest. The Division 2 will be powered by an updated version of the Snowdrop engine that enables us to realize our ambitions for the sequel, but more importantly, we're also taking everything we learned over the past two years and applying it towards the sequel to make sure we get it right.

Part of that means recognizing your commitment to The Division. With that in mind, we're adding a new type of achievement called "Shields" to the game. Earning them will unlock special rewards in The Division 2 when it launches.

On behalf of all the teams at Ubisoft, we thank you for the support you've given us over the past two years, and we hope that our continued work will earn that support for many years to come. We can't wait to show you what we have in store for The Division 2 at E3 2018 in June. See you then!

PUBG Xbox Spring Roadmap

notice_thumbnail_1520575308398.jpg

Hello Xbox players,

Both Microsoft and PUBG Corp remain committed to delivering the best PUBG console experience possible. Over the next few months of development we trust that you will see meaningful improvements to optimizations, new content additions, compelling reasons to play, and refinements to the overall console experience. These improvements and areas of focus comprise our Spring Xbox PUBG Roadmap.

To service our Roadmap, we will be transitioning to a longer 2-3 week cycle in-between patches, with our goal to ensure we are consistently releasing well tested improvements to the current Live version of the game.

Spring Xbox Roadmap:

Continued performance optimizations: To put it bluntly, we are simply not satisfied with the games current console performance, and especially so during tense moments of onscreen action. We have found some immediate opportunity to increase framerate through changes to Erangel’s building materials, as well as some reduction to in-game foliage composition. Until we are completely satisfied in the quality and reliability of the experience, efforts to optimize performance will be an ongoing hi-priority issue. Here are some of the specific technical areas we have made changes:

- Optimized game characters and their movements
- Optimized the number of particle effects that are spawned by vehicles and grenades
- Optimized object collision complexity
- Balanced the game work across all CPU cores to reduce streaming hitches when moving

UI optimizations: Our goal is that PUBG stands up well when compared to other games in your collection, and this comparison begins the second you boot up the game. HDR and Safe Zone options, the quality of the individual assets, the speed at which they load and how they react to your selection are all things we will improve upon as we move towards creating a premium and higher quality experience.

Improve Inventory UX: We receive a ton of feedback around the usability of the title, particularly when it comes to navigating the inventory UI. PUBG is a complicated game to control, and when you factor the risk versus reward of inventory management in high pressure situations, the interface must be intuitive and responsive. We are working towards that goal, and we have some changes coming that we hope will allow players to action the decisions they want to make, faster.

Improvements to Console Controller Options: We will be providing additional preset configurations to choose from as well as exposing a wider set of aiming options, providing players more freedom to create a controller experience that feels satisfying and empowering.

Improvements to game matchmaking: To support a fair and competitive environment, we plan to further improve matchmaking for Duo and Squad modes.

Console Player Reporting Features: We are hoping to streamline reporting by adding in-game tools that will empower players to more quickly submit instances of unsporting behavior (Solo Teaming, Team Killing etc).

Updates to Vehicle Penetration: To promote a greater sense of realism, we will be applying bullet penetration to our vehicle system. Our current model can be viewed as a vehicles body having a life bar that must be reduced before the driver can be damaged. When our update is released, players that are skillful with their shots, can pierce vehicle doors and panels, damaging enemy players and ensuring that threat is constant even for those behind the wheel.

Game Highlights: We want players to easily capture and share in-game actions of interest, so we have integrated Game Highlights functionality on Xbox.

Achievements: We have some great ideas for those players that like an added challenge, and we will be rolling out our achievement criteria as part of our roadmap.

Sound: We’re going to continue improvements to audio quality and directional sound.

Customization: We will add in-game Player Customization Options, emotes and more. We want to offer a wide range of options for you to customize your character in style.

Test server: In advance of major upcoming patch releases, we will be making available to players a separate PUBG Xbox Download client. There, players can participate in our latest content updates before they are moved to “Live”.

Miramar is coming to Xbox early spring!!!

Thank you,

Xbox Cross-Platform Play Coming to Fortnite!

Hey Fortnite Community,

We’re happy to announce today that in partnership with our friends at Microsoft, Fortnite will feature cross-play, cross-progression, and cross-purchase, between Xbox One, PC, Mac, iOS and (in the next few months) Android.

Contrary to what may have been implied, Microsoft has long been a leading voice in supporting cross-platform play, connecting players across PC, mobile and all consoles. We’ve been working together with them over the last several months to make this possible, and will bring this functionality to Fortnite players on Xbox right along with other platforms.

With each new platform we support and every update we ship, we strive to bring Fortnite to more people, and make it easier to play together with friends. And, as always, cross-play is opt in.

As we shared a few days ago, starting Monday you can sign-up for the Fortnite Invite Event on iOS. On phones and tablets, Fortnite is the same 100-player game you know from Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Mac. Same gameplay, same map, same content, same weekly updates.

See you on the Battle Bus,

Fortnite Team

Microsoft Fixes Xbox One's Last Big 4K Blu-ray Player Picture Bugs

While I think it was a great move by Microsoft to include 4K Blu-ray players in its Xbox One S and Xbox One X consoles, it’s fair to say those players experienced a few teething problems.

In the process of putting together this review of the Xbox One X’s 4K Blu-ray drive, I came across two big issues: raised brightness levels that made dark scenes look washed out and grey (as first reported here), and colors that looked slightly off tone when compared with those produced by multiple rival 4K Blu-ray players.

To Microsoft’s credit it fixed the first - and worst - of these two issues within days. The color issue, however, has taken Microsoft considerably longer to get to sort out. According to the notes provided on the latest Xbox One system update (1804.180305-1900), though, a solution has now not only been found, but should already have rolled out to members of the Xbox One Preview Update Alpha program.

https%3A%2F%2Fblogs-images.forbes.com%2Fjohnarcher%2Ffiles%2F2017%2F12%2FXboxOneX4KBDHeadToHead1.jpg

The color problem was caused by the Xbox consoles outputting color from 4K Blu-rays in RGB mode, rather than the YCbCr format the video on the disc was encoded in. All other 4K Blu-ray players, so far as I know, simply pass the video out in its native YCbCr format, leaving the RGB conversion process to your TV.

Even if you selected the ‘YCC Output’ mode in the Xbox One X/S menus, the console still, bizarrely, converted the video first to RGB, and then back to YCbCr. And the more conversion processes a video signal has to go through, the more imperfections it’s likely to pick up along the way.

A ‘Display’ notification in the latest Xbox One System Update notes, though, states that the new firmware ‘resolves issues with RGB colors when displaying in 4K HDR mode when playing a UHD disc.’

I’ve asked Microsoft for more detail on precisely how the fix works, but my presumption for now is that its engineers have found a way of simply bypassing the console’s RGB conversion path with video output from UHD discs.

While the color fix for the 4K Blu-ray drive is the most important one given that it affected every console and disc, it’s also good to see the latest Xbox One System Update notes stating that they have ‘resolved the issue in which the Blu-ray app may experience visual glitching after a few minutes of playback.’

This glitching is not an issue I’ve had personal experience of, but I’ve certainly had other Xbox One owners tell me that it’s happened to them.

https%3A%2F%2Fblogs-images.forbes.com%2Fjohnarcher%2Ffiles%2F2017%2F11%2FXboxOneXvsXboxOneS.jpg

I’ve not yet had the chance to put Microsoft’s latest Xbox One system update to the test myself, to check everything performs as it should. However, the firmware update preview notes Microsoft provides to its Xbox One Insiders tend to be pretty open and reliable. So provided they’re correct on this occasion too, when the firmware rolls out to all Xbox Ones they will become even more tempting (and great value) home entertainment all-rounders than they were before.

State of Decay 2's Xbox One X Enhancements Detailed – IGN First

State of Decay 2 developer Undead Labs has confirmed the specific Xbox One X enhancements that their upcoming open-world zombie-survival game will have to IGN. "There are significant visual enhancements we're able to deliver thanks to the Xbox One X," said Undead Labs studio head and State of Decay 2 executive producer Jeff Strain. "Extra memory and greater processing power gives us a more stable frame rate and let’s us do more with higher resolution textures. When you're in the game, you'll immediately see the difference – denser foliage, detailed shadows, depth of light from farther distances, and more detailed character models. It makes the world feel more crisp, vibrant, and like real life. And of course, it lets us run the game in 4k and HDR, which a lot of fans are excited about."

When we asked if there will be user-selectable Xbox One X settings, such as the Graphics Mode or Performance Mode settings we've seen in games like Gears of War 4 and Rise of the Tomb Raider, Undead Labs told us they're sticking with one Xbox One X configuration: "As of now, we are not planning to offer the option to optimize for graphics or performance. The team wants to have the same experience for all users on Xbox."

State of Decay 2 will be released on May 22 for $29.99, with a $49.99 Ultimate Edition also available that gets you future DLC packs, a copy of State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition for Xbox One, and early access to State of Decay 2. We're covering State of Decay 2 all month long as part of IGN First. Take a look at all of our coverage so far if you've missed anything

Shadow of the Tomb Raider Will Be Out This Fall

pgip45hyzqjiamguobrs.jpg

A new teaser countdown from Square Enix promises big Tomb Raider news tomorrow, but a quick HTML check will give it to you right now: Shadow of the Tomb Raider is coming out this September.

Head to the official Tomb Raider website and you’ll see a message promising an announcement on March 15, 2018 at 6am PT. Inspect the HTML, however, and you’ll see the announcement early:

“tagline”:”Shadow of The Tomb Raider is the climatic finale of Lara’s origin story. Available September 14th 2018"

If this is an accident, it’s not the first time. In October 2016, a Redditor spotted the name of Lara Croft’s next adventure because it was on the laptop of someone next to him on the subway.

At the time, we confirmed with our own sources that Shadow of the Tomb Raider was indeed the next game in the series. This one, as we reported then, is developed by Eidos Montreal, the studio behind Thief (2014), Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. The previously two games were made at the San Francisco, California-based Crystal Dynamics, which is now working on an Avengers game. Eidos Montreal is also entering the Marvel universe with a Guardians of the Galaxy game that has not yet been announced.

We’ve heard that Square invited some reporters to see the game in Montreal recently, so expect a wave of new previews when the official announcement hits tomorrow.

E3 2018: Microsoft Readies Biggest E3 Showing Ever

E32018AnnounceHero-hero.jpg

Since Xbox made its first appearance at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in 2000, Xbox has had a major presence at the show, delivering exclusive and powerful ways to let fans in on what we’re up to, and 2018 will be no different. In fact, it will be our biggest showing ever.

With the evolution of E3, now including fans and extended show hours, we saw an opportunity to create an entirely new show experience reaching E3 attendees and those that are following the show from afar. With that, in collaboration with the Entertainment Software Association, the organizers of E3, we’re excited to announce that Xbox will be taking over the Microsoft Theater, a perfectly situated space located in the heart of L.A. Live and across the street from the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC).

The Microsoft Theater will be home to official E3 events like the Xbox E3 2018 Briefing on June 10, 2018 at 1PM PT, various Xbox FanFest activities, hands-on gameplay and demos for all E3 attendees and more. Not only does the Microsoft Theater allow us to centralize our Xbox presence at E3, but it’s size enables us to include even more fans and partners in the Xbox E3 2018 Briefing than ever before.

In addition to the Microsoft Theater, we’ll also continue to have a meaningful presence at the LACC with a new booth completely dedicated to Mixer, where you can play, stream and interact with games and catch the latest E3 news live throughout the entire week.

These changes – expanding our presence, multiple venues, taking over the Microsoft Theater – give us the opportunity to bring together a variety of Xbox experiences into one primary location and, most importantly, let fans in on what we’re up to in 2018 and beyond in a fresh new way.

So mark your calendars for the Xbox E3 2018 Briefing for June 10, 2018 at 1PM PT to kick off the week of E3 with us. We’re excited and will have plenty more to share on our E3 2018 plans soon. Stay tuned to Xbox Wire for an update in April.

The Witcher developer teases a crossover for Geralt (update)

546d27725999ae0d48e3fb012fde485a7aafd066.jpg__0x1500_q85.0.0.jpg

CD Projekt Red is teasing the return Geralt of Rivia, star of The Witcher franchise — but he won’t be showing up in one of his own games. Instead, according to a tweet from community lead Marcin Momot, it sounds like Geralt will be a guest star in a game due out later this year.

Momot’s obviously playing coy for now — his only reply to the original tweet consists of a thinking emoji — but fans are coming up with their dream crossovers for The Witcher hero, and at least one of them seems plausible.

The most popular suggestion for now is a spot for Geralt on the Soulcalibur 6 roster. Launching sometime in 2018, Soulcalibur 6 is the first new entry in Bandai Namco’s fighting game series in more than six years. And Soulcalibur has played host to a number of surprising guests over the years, from Link to Darth Vader to Ezio Auditore. Geralt jumping into a match wouldn’t be totally out of the ordinary, nor would it be out of character.

Lending credence to this idea is a rumor from Let’s Play Video Games, which reports that Bandai Namco, which distributed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in Europe, Australia and New Zealand, would include CD Projekt Red’s best known character in this year’s Soulcalibur game. While the publication only cites anonymous sources from several weeks back, CD Projekt Red’s tweet today only adds fuel to that fire.

But others are running away with the idea of seeing Geralt in other games. There are calls for an official Geralt of Rivia costume inMonster Hunter: World or Final Fantasy 15, two games with in-depth character creators that players have already used to recreate the white-haired journeyman. Considering the propensity of both games to feature left-field crossover costumes and events, these aren’t terribly obscure suggestions. But Momot pointedly said an upcoming game, which should exclude both titles immediately.

Hopes that Geralt will appear in a new Super Smash Bros. title, meanwhile, are the definition of wishful thinking. Nintendo hasn’t said anything about a new Smash Bros. game yet — not to say it won’t — but Bandai Namco’s association with both Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and The Witcher 3 is enough to get fans excited about the possibility. Geralt featuring in a Pokémon game, like the hypothetical Pokémon Snap 2, is ... well, I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that’s a clear joke.

But who’s to say? Not CD Projekt Red quite yet.

Update (March 14): While CD Projekt Red gave Polygon a “no comment,” The Witcher account tweeted yet another hint at Geralt’s next appearance.

We’ll be checking back tomorrow, indeed.

Microsoft is in Talks to Join Movies Anywhere

movies-hero-1024x576.jpg

As you may know, Microsoft’s Movies & TV service was left out in the cold when Disney expanded Movies Anywhere to include multiple content providers. But that will likely change, I was told.

“Microsoft is committed to delivering rich entertainment experiences to our customers,” a Microsoft spokesperson told me. “And we’re in discussions with Movies Anywhere about bringing their service onboard.”

If you’re not clear what that means, you can refer back to my October 2017 post, Disney’s Movies Anywhere is Anywhere But Microsoft. At that time, I explained that the Movies Anywhere service, which supports content from Disney, Fox, Sony Pictures, Universal and Warner Bros., works with virtually every digital video service and device there is. Except Microsoft’s.

In the meantime, Movies & TV is still a great place for Windows 10 and Xbox One users to rent movies or buy TV show episodes.

“On Microsoft Movies & TV [today], customers can rent or buy any of the nearly 200,000 entertainment options to stream on their Xbox or Windows-based devices,” I was told.

And what about mobile devices? Obviously, accessing purchased or rented Movies & TV content on Android and iOS smartphones and tablets would be huge. But Microsoft had nothing to share on that front, sorry.

But look at it this way: If Microsoft does join Movies Anywhere, you will be able to access your content via that mobile app on Android and iOS. So Movies Anywhere compatibility would actually solve both problems.
