Fuck that UFC beta. They have that loot box shit in that game as well. EA was really banking on us accepting that shit.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Xbox One beginner's guide: frying pans, blue circles and chicken dinners explained

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, or PUBG to its friends, arrives on Xbox One this week and, chances are, you might need a little explanation if you’ve never seen it before. Why are 100 people jumping from a plane hellbent on murdering each other? What’s this ‘blue circle’ people keep talking about? Where’s this chicken dinner?

While PC gamers have had months to get used this chaotic and unpredictable carnage, first timers are likely to find themselves overwhelmed, confused, bored, lost for bit, having a panicky shoot out, and then dead. Before jumping back into repeat the process all over again.

Which is where this beginners guide comes in. While we have more specific tips on how to survive in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, this is a basic primer for the game’s core concepts - terminology, set up, mechanics and so on. Let’s get started shall we?

This is a Battle Royale

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds origins directly state the the movie/book Battle Royale as the original inspiration. Like that source, this is all about one winner. While up to 100 players can start, only one can win (or a single team, if you’re playing with friends). That’s pretty much the only rule.

Instructions: parachute, find gun, kill people

This is the basic structure to every match. The game starts with everyone jumping out of a plane and parachuting to the ground. Once there, it’s all about scrambling around houses and buildings trying to find guns and gear to help you stay alive. That includes armour, weapons, clothes, medical supplies and more. There’s as much skill as there is luck depending on what you find. People who find a nice hat and a crowbar tend not to last as long as someone with a tactical vest and M16.

You start with nothing and it’s up to you to fix that

Nope, nothing. Zip. Nada. Half the… let’s call it fun, is trying to find enough gear to stand a chance. You can aim for anywhere on the island when parachuting in, and where you land can make a big difference. Some areas have more guns, ammo and supplies, other will have less. So go where all the stuff is, and you’ll risk more encounters early in the game. But go where there’s less gear to avoid a clash and you risk being poorly armed for an encounter. Either way, a gun, some armour and a bag to put it all in should be top of your shopping list.

Your best tactic early on is to avoid everyone

It might seem counter intuitive to play a competitive shooter and try not to shoot people but it’s the best way to stay alive initially in PUBG. It’s easy, early on, to hit a group, or get picked off from a distance by someone you never saw, so stay low and avoid trouble until you absolutely have to. That way everyone kills each other and by the time you have to fight you’re hopefully A), better armed, and B), have less opponents to worry about.

The playing area shrinks over time. Say hello to the blue circle

Obviously 100 people trying to kill each other over a huge island could take a while, so the game periodically restricts the playing area with a crackling blue energy field. Early on the damage is minimal, meaning you can actually hide in this area to avoid other players. However, as the game progresses it gets more and more deadly, eventually leading to almost certain death outside of it. Okay, so it’s almost certain death inside as well, but at least you have a chance to fight back. There’s also a red circle that indicates an area is about to be shelled. If you find yourself there then get in doors fast or you run a high risk of getting blown to smithereens.

Yes, the frying pan really does deflect bullets

There are a few melee weapons in PUBG, like crowbars and sickles, but the frying pan is the true hero of this game. Early on in development there was an attempt to make it possible to bat away grenades with the pan like it was a tennis racket. It didn’t work, but it did make the pan able to deflect bullets. In all honestly you’ll more than likely get killed trying to do so, but it’s the ultimate own to run up to a player shooting you, bullets ricocheting away, and then kill them with a well placed wallop.

Yes, there’s only one map for now
mpvG7uE38whWdnLDiQ2aXf-650-80.jpg

Currently all of PlayerUnknown’s action takes place on Erangel, a large fictional Eastern European island. Don’t be put off by that though, as this is a big place - 8 x 8km - and the plane rarely flies over it in the same way twice, so there’s a lot of variety to drops and landing zones. Different areas have different characteristics as well, so there are lots of tactics to experiment with. More remote areas mean you can avoid trouble but will have difficulty finding gear and escaping the blue zone, for example. There’s a second map on the way as well, set in a new desert location.

There is no actual chicken dinner
Sorry. It’s a conceptual meal that symbolises victory. It’s also the catchphrase you’ll see if you manage to be the last man or team standing. It probably has potatoes and some sort of gravy.

Microsoft Clarifies Xbox Scorpio Frame Rate/Fidelity Stance

Microsoft has clarified another detail about the upcoming Project Scorpio console.

Xbox engineering lead Mike Ybarra confirmed that Microsoft will not force developers to ensure there is frame rate parity between Scorpio andXbox Onegames. Responding to someone on Twitter who said this would be the case, Ybarra stressed that no such mandate is in place. "No, there isn't," he said to the suggestion that there is a requirement that a game's Xbox One frame rate is the same for its Scorpio version. "This is up to the developer to choose, for their games, what they want to do."

In another tweet, Ybarra laid out Microsoft's policy on this even more clearly and directly: "Developers are free to choose how they use the power of Project Scorpio for games. We have no requirements limiting framerate or fidelity," he said.

Microsoft is positioning Scorpio as the"most powerful console ever made,"so it would be unfortunate if developers had to reign in their visions for games by limiting frame rate and fidelity. Microsoft Studios boss Shannon Loftis thinks developers will keep the frame rate consistent for multiplayer games.

All Xbox One games work on Scorpio, though the Scorpio editions can look and perform better, in some cases, if developers want to do that. It is a similar situation withPS4and PS4 Pro.

Microsoft is expected to share more details on Scorpio at E3 or sooner. Presumably we will learn the console's official name and price, among other things, in the weeks and months to come before the system's launch this holiday.

Destiny 2: Some Endgame Content Now DLC-Locked

Bungie has once again come under fire from Destiny 2's playerbase - this time, thanks to some additional restrictions imposed by the Curse of Osiris expansion, which has raised the power levels necessary for Prestige strikes beyond the capacity of vanilla Destiny 2 players.

As reported by Polygon, the expansion raises the level cap from 300 to 330; this has accordingly led to a rise in recommended power levels for the game's more challenging endgame content, which revolves around the game's Raid system and the weekly Nightfall strike. While these events are still open to everyone, the Prestige - or highest-level - versions of these activities are now locked to anyone under the power cap, meaning that any players who haven't purchased Curse of Osiris can no longer access the highest-level endgame content.

In addition, the Curse of Osiris expansion sees the reintroduction of the original Destiny's heroic strike playlist, which is accessible to players below the power cap but is also locked behind the expansion.

The weekly Nightfall rotation will now include strikes from both the base game and the expansion, meaning that players who haven't bought the expansion will find weeks where they have no available Nightfall. This should be familiar to players as the same system was in place for the original Destiny; locking the higher-level endgame content, however, is causing some disquiet among the community.

It comes on the back of a bugged weapon causing carnage in the PvP arena, as well as Bungie being forced to alter the game's experience system when players discovered that shorter events were scaling down XP gain.
