2 TB Xbox One leaked by GameStop employee

Over the past few weeks, leaks in the gaming industry have been extremely frequent and with E3 right around the corner it seems more and more surprises are leaking out into the open.

A new version of the Xbox One that increases the internal hard drive to 2 terabytes of storage may have been leaked by a GameStop employee to games website, Gamespot. The new model holds a placeholder release date of December 31st and is priced at $449.99, the same price that the Xbox One Elite console launched at.

With what is planned to be a “special” E3 this year, it is very likely that Microsoft could announce an Xbox One with a bigger hard drive as well as the rumoured slim model and even the rumoured Scorpio. With so many rumoured iterations of the Xbox One reportedly coming, Microsoft could have one of the most interesting conferences this year.

Titanfall 2 launches Oct. 28, comes with offline single-player campaign

Titanfall 2 will hit PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One on Oct. 28, and the game will ship with a "full single-player campaign."

The news on Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts' sequel comes from a live broadcast on YouTube ahead of the publisher's EA Play event. The company posted its rehearsals, apparently unintentionally, on YouTube alongside a new trailer for the single-player campaign.

According to details from the stream, Titanfall 2 will come with "expanded pilot gameplay, more customization options and a deeper progression system" and six new Titans. The game's single-player campaign — which can be played offline — has been "crafted to dive deeper into the Titanfall universe" and explore the bond between Pilot and Titan.

Prior to the game's October launch, Respawn will release a multiplayer technical test for Titanfall 2, EA said. Players can register for that multiplayer test on the game's official website.

Update: EA and Respawn released an official version of the Titanfall 2 single-player trailer shortly after the leak. A brief glimpse at multiplayer, and the game's rumored grappling hook gameplay, can be seen at the end.

BATMAN - The Telltale Series' Unveiled in First Look Ahead of Summer 2016 Premiere

The Telltale crew is down in Los Angeles for the annual E3 Gaming Expo... and today we can share the very first screens and cast details for the upcoming BATMAN - The Telltale Series ahead of its worldwide debut this summer!

1yj09h3.jpg

The episodic series will premiere digitally on home consoles, PC/Mac, and mobile devices, and we'll be showing it privately to guests at E3 this coming week. The series will also be available on game consoles as a special 'Season Pass Disc' which will be available at retailers across North America, Latin America, and Europe later this summer, granting access to the five episode season as it becomes available for download.

Fwll1ZY.jpg

Our CEO and Co-Founder Kevin Bruner had this to say about the upcoming series: "We've been hard at work at Telltale creating an all-new iteration of the iconic Batman story that puts players in the suit of billionaire Bruce Wayne, just as much as it will put them behind the mask, deciding how to carefully navigate a complex drama, rich with action, crime, corruption, and villainy lurking around every corner of Gotham City. The complex life and fractured psyche of Bruce Wayne has lent itself to becoming a bold evolution of the signature 'Telltale' role-playing experience, and we couldn't be more excited as we prepare to debut the series to players across the world this summer."

HzwyncT.jpg

Rendered to look like a living, breathing comic book, Telltale's vision of Batman will feature an award-winning cast of talent, including Troy Baker in the role of Bruce Wayne, Travis Willingham as Harvey Dent, Erin Yvette as Vicki Vale, Enn Reitel as Alfred Pennyworth, Murphy Guyer as Lieutenant James Gordon, Richard McGonagle as Carmine Falcone, and Laura Bailey as Selina Kyle. We'll be able to reveal additional cast and characters as the season progresses.

Look to Telltale's channels on Facebook and Twitter for more news from E3 as it happens!

Forza Horizon 3 leaked by GAME

Forza Horizon 3 has been leaked by UK retailer GAME. Caught by Raceboy77 on Twitter, GAME accidently let the pre-order page of Playground Games' upcoming racer go up before Microsoft’s E3 conference.

forzahorizon3.jpg

This follows the leak by industry insider ekim a few days ago about the features of Forza Horizon 3, which promise 60fps gameplay, a motivating campaign, and less off-road gameplay.

RUMOR: Ori and the Will of the Wisps possibly leaked

Following the many other leaks that have come out today, we have another that may have revealed a sequel to Ori and the Blind Forest. The leak came from twitter user NerdLeaks and was a single tweet simply saying “Ori and the Will of the Wisps.” While it isn't much to go on, NerdLeaks has been a very reputable source in the past and I definitely think it could be revealed at Microsoft's conference tomorrow.

How emotional psychology and The Goonies inspired Sea of Thieves

One of the most talked about games at E3 2016 is all about being a pirate.

In Rare’s new online Xbox One and Windows pirate sim Sea of Thieves, players form crews with friends, get on a ship, and basically pretend to be a pirate. Online, they encounter other crews made up of real players, whose motivations might be less about hanging out and drinking grog, and more about forcibly taking your booty.

We had a chance to catch up with Rare studio head Craig Duncan and Sea of Thieves lead designer Mike Chapman to chat about designing for player emotions and motivation, and making a game that’s conducive to high seas adventure.

GAMASUTRA: Can you just tell me how the idea for this came about? I see you're wearing a Goonies shirt. Is that the inspiration here?
Craig Duncan: We got inspired by players playing together and creating stories together, even before the pirate theme came on. What I love about the Goonies film it's all about friends going on adventures together. For us, as game makers, giving you a world where you can go on stories and adventures with your friends we think is super-powerful.

Hopefully you've seen the gameplay trailer we showed yesterday. What we did is we invited a lot of Sea of Thieves fans into the studio and got them to play it. And we literally dropped them into the world. We didn't give them any help. We didn't give them any tutorials. We just said, "Go play the game."

They formed a crew, they got in the boat, they set sail to go have their adventure. Really, for us, we want to make a game where players group together with friends in a crew but then the magic of Sea of Thieves is you see another sail along the horizon and you know that's another group of real players.

SeaOfThieves4.png

It seems tricky to design something like that--something that will support emergent narrative like that, especially in multiplayer.
Craig Duncan: It is, and it's actually deeper than that because it's about supporting multiple player emotions as well, because we know different players are motivated by different things. Some people are very competitively motivated. They'll see a sail on the horizon and they'll see that as an opportunity for plunder and will take it very competitively.

Our game is super-social. It's everything that you'd imagine in a pirate fantasy. You can play music, you can drink grog. So a lot of people will just play it just to hang out with their friends.

If you're interested in exploration you can go find a treasure map, go find treasure, if that's what motivates you, that kind of completionist motivation. And actually all those different player types playing in the world at the same time actually is what brings really emergent stories.

How do you zero in on those kinds of emotions and motivations?
Craig Duncan: We've done a number of things through development. Very early on we had a wheel of emotions up in the studio.

SeaOfThieves1.jpg

A wheel of emotions?
Craig Duncan: So there's a guy called Dr. Robert Plutchik [we came across] when we were researching this. Imagine a heat map of emotions, where you've got sorrow and excitement in opposite quadrants, or anger and empathy in opposite corners. Most games tend to serve the power fantasy, to beat the opposition -- really aggressive emotions. Whereas there are other sort of emotions like sorrow, remorse, or awe.

We do all these in a playtesting and we've actually got people to come put Post-It notes on what emotions they have. So if your ship left you behind and your crew abandoned you, you probably feel sorrow and remorse. If you see a beautiful sunset on the horizon -- our game supports full dynamic time of day -- you might feel awe or inspired. When you climb to the top of a ridge in an island and overlook the world you might feel peace.

We wanted to create a game that had of those different emotions. Different emotions, different motivations, different player types: [we want to] throw them all in this world. You've got to give it some stimulus because you can't just let people kinda go do what they want. But every time people play the game everyone just smiles. That trailer we showed at E3 was real players playing the game and their genuine reactions and everyone just has a blast. The comment I hear more than anything else is, "I played your game, I've never smiled so much playing a game." That, for me, that's what gaming is about. It's pure fun.

SeaOfThieves6.jpg

Can you comment on the co-op design guidelines that your studio's been following?
Craig Duncan: Yeah, and we've been iterating on it a lot. Rare is very much about iterating, so we get things working really quickly. We play it, we playtest it. The great thing about pirates is everyone knows what to do as a pirate. So ultimately we don't really need to tell you what to do, how to act. But what we landed on super early was the cooperative bond of a crew we wanted to keep sacred.

So you being in your crew, you guys should have each other's back. You should be going on adventures together. You should be sharing in the spoils, sharing the experience. Actually crew-to-crew "griefing" is kind of okay. If you want to go with an uneasy alliance with another crew and then betray each other, [you can].

In a lot of our early prototypes we actually allowed within-crew betrayal. We thought, "Oh, that'll be cool." Actually it's horrible because you go on adventures together. You spend an hour and a half exploring the world, you get some treasure, and then someone in your crew kills you all and takes the stuff. Kind of horrible experience.

So, again, we're still play-testing this and we're still getting more and more real players in and seeing how people play. For us, cooperative is all about your crew. Back to the Goonies reference. It's you and your friends against the world and that's the way we want it to feel.

But when you see that other sail on the horizon, you know that's another crew of people and maybe they've just had a battle. Maybe they're limping back to port, maybe you're in that situation, you're limping back to port. Maybe you're vulnerable, maybe you're ruthless and hunting for treasure. We want you to see that sail and think what is that other crew? Who are they? What are their motives? Can we trade something with them? Can it be uneasy?

SeaOfThieves2.jpg

Can you give your take on the guidelines and the tenets that you follow when creating an online co-op game that relies on cooperating with your crew and also [pitting you] against other players?
Mike Chapman: I've been getting a lot of questions today around, "How do people switch roles? How do people assign their roles?" For us, right from the start we wanted to keep players flat. What I mean by that is, there are no defined roles. It's up to the players. There's no system that governs that. We give you a ship, we give you a world. If you want interact with the anchor, man the cannons, repair the ship, just go walk up to it and interact with it. It's completely intuitive.

So, for us, that's kind of co-op gameplay. It's up to the player to decide how they use that ship to navigate through the world and decide what things they want to go after, and choose the goals to go after. It's completely up to the players, we're just building this world for them, building these quests for them. It's up to them how they interact with it.

SeaOfThieves3.png

Was that counter-intuitive? Removing some of the guidance for players? Did you feel like you wanted to give them more structure than they actually needed?
Mike Chapman: Not really. There will be progression systems in the game for different player motivations. But in terms of the core game experience, we've approached the mechanics to be really intuitive. One of the tenets we use is it needs to be believable, but not realistic. We're not a realistic sailing game, we're not a realistic pirate game.

We're trying to build this pirate fantasy which delivers on the romance and the sense of adventure. Everything that players have got in their mind about being a pirate. That's what we're going after.
That [gameplay trailer had] real fans, real players playing the game. We got them to Rare, gave them a tour of the studio, sat them down in front of the game. We didn't explain anything. All they knew was, "I'm a pirate."

That was it.

We actually saw them playing, me and the rest of the design team, and they were sailing the ship that they had no idea about before within five minutes. Honestly, we were choking up. It was a magical moment and we knew we had the right direction.

SeaOfThieves7.jpg

Is this something that might show up on Xbox Preview and then you could get all that information, like player data feedback?
Mike Chapman: We're not talking specifically here around plans of that detail, but we know that we want to get the game into a beta. The game's so ambitions. This massive shared world where you navigate seamlessly, there's all these different goals you can go after.

Different crew sizes, different ships potentially longer term. We just want try those systems at scale with real players, just to see, are players gravitating more towards combat? Are they gravitating more towards quests? Do they want to have battles against more mythical creatures than what we initially provide? We just want to get it into real players' hands.

SeaOfThieves5.jpg

It's really interesting talking to Craig about the prototyping and the playtesting. What are some of the key points you learned watching people actually play the game throughout the playtesting stages?
Mike Chapman: Really early on we felt we were [going in the right] direction, but we wanted to prove it. I think traditionally you spend a lot more time working theoretically where you're working on white board, you're working on Post-Its, you're working on design documentation. We just wanted to make it real and prototype the actual thing. It doesn't have to look visually great, it just needs to have that cool mechanic there.

We knew we were going to learn very early on that we didn't have to overly explain everything. I think that's what's great about the setting is that everyone's got in their minds what a pirate fantasy is. You have in your mind all the things you could do, all the things you could be.

Your goal from there is to meet players halfway. They'd be like, "Oh, I can't get the ship moving. I need to get the anchor up. I need to get the sails down." When you think about the types of quests that could be in the world, when you think about pirates or pirate tropes, your mind kind of fills in the blanks so you can imagine the direction we're going to go in.

goonies-header.png

It's funny, I got into Rust, the online game, for a while. I like the idea of letting go of structure in multiplayer games. Rust takes it to an extreme. It's kind of like, "Here are some things to craft,” and then it's weird because then society starts to take shape. But usually society is terrible in Rust, everyone's a jerk.
Mike Chapman: That is a great example where we just want to provide enough structure, enough guidance. Ultimately the players will define how they progress, the paths they take -- I think it's just a massive opportunity. The Rust example, Day Z, great experiences.

I've played a lot of those games, but we wanted to bring that experience, build on it, but bring it to a wider audience. I think they can be quite alienating for a lot of people. The balance of loss is too high. People fear being punished. So I think we want to bring it to a wider audience, but do so with that Rare charm, Rare tone, that classic Rare game feel that people want from us.

Microsoft considered launching an upgraded Xbox One this year

Microsoft's Xbox head Phil Spencer revealed in an E3 2016 interview that the company seriously considered launching a new Xbox One with upgraded hardware this year, but decided against it.

xbox-one-s-3.jpg

The company is launching a smaller version of the console, the Xbox One S, this year that can handle 4K movie discs and video streaming. However, as Eurogamer found out when it spoke with Spencer, we almost got a gaming-themed Xbox One hardware upgrade this year:

We could have done a new update this year. We actually looked at it. We went all the way to, we had the spec in front of us, should we ship something that's less than Scorpio this year, but in truth you can't do a true 4K console this year. And I just didn't think anything between what is effectively a 1080p console and the 4K console, like, from a consumer television standpoint there's nothing in the middle. So let's go focus on 4K and next year was the right year to do that.

As he stated, that upgrade plan was scrapped in favor of "Project Scorpio", which will launch at the end of 2017. It will have higher end hardware to support games in 4K resolution, while also supporting all the older Xbox One games and accessories that were previously released, along with all backwards compatible Xbox 360 games.

Everything you need to know about Xbox Clubs, Arena, Looking For Group, and Play Anywhere

At E3 2016, Jeff Henshaw from the Xbox Platform team gave us a glimpse of Looking For Group, Arena, and Clubs for Xbox One.

Microsoft announced the features at their E3 2016 briefing on Monday but didn't go into much depth about how they work. We now have a better idea of what gamers can expect from these new aspects as they roll out across Xbox Live and the apps for Android, iOS and Windows 10 devices before the end of the year.

Henshaw was keen to stress that he wants these features to be seen as an inflection point, in a similar fashion to the way Xbox Live changed the nature of console gaming forever. It certainly seems as though the features could be a big deal, especially for games that are currently relying on third-party forums or other solutions for making groups and finding other players.

Xbox Play Anywhere: Halo 6 for PC?
xbox-play-anywhere.jpg

First, we discussed Xbox Play Anywhere, which is essentially Microsoft's branding for games like Killer Instinct which see your content roam between Windows 10 PCs and Xbox One devices. When you see the Xbox Play Anywhere logo, it definitively means those licenses are valid on both Xbox One and the Windows 10 Store.

Henshaw stated that all Microsoft Studios published titles would be Xbox Play Anywhere from now on, which appears to indicate that games like Halo 6 will indeed hit PC. Henshaw said that third-party titles would be joining the program as well, but stated that they didn't have any announcements to make at this time.

Win32 gamers
xbox-preview-win32-games_0.jpg

Microsoft also gave us a look at how classic Win32 games typical of Steam will seamlessly integrate with Xbox Live after the update. Xbox Platform lead Mike Ybarra previously stated that they see a lot of World of Warcraft guilds using Xbox Live party chat to organize raids, and it certainly seems as though a lot of these features are targeted towards those sorts of gamers.

Henshaw used the examples of Counter Strike Global Offensive, DOTA 2 and League of Legends as games that would integrate with Xbox Live on Windows 10 – complete with their own game hubs, the ability to invite friends to parties and so on. The whole goal with Xbox Live seems to be trying to connect gamers across the entire Windows ecosystem. Presumably, Microsoft has recognized the importance of gaming to PC sales as it's the only segment of the industry that is seeing positive growth.

Microsoft has also updated Xbox Smartglass on Android and iOS to more closely to resemble the apps on Windows 10 and 10 Mobile. I asked about the possibility of iOS and Android updates outpacing Windows 10 Mobile due to their market share, to which they replied that it wouldn't be the case. They stressed that the company sees Windows 10 as a single platform now, and UWP would ensure the 10 Mobile version of the Xbox app would see the same improvements indefinitely.

Cortana
We didn't get to see a demonstration of Cortana's capability on their demo Xbox preview build, but I did ask about those gamers who hail from countries where Cortana isn't supported, even on PC. I noted that even in English-speaking countries like Ireland, Cortana has yet to see any availability – despite that Cortana'sr features work just fine if you swap your region to US or UK.

Henshaw stressed that the aim is to take Cortana global, and they're working hard to bring the functionality to more regions as soon as possible.

Looking For Group
Microsoft debuted the Looking For Group (LFG) feature during their E3 press conference. The idea is that players will be able to post and search for ads to accomplish goals in different games.

LFG is handled by Xbox Live's game hubs system. Each game has its own 'hub' on Xbox Live, which allows developers to post updates on the game into a dedicated news feed. Players can follow games they like and receive updates directly into their own activity feed on Xbox One or the associated apps.

xbox-lfg.JPG

LFG will appear as a new tab under an individual game's hub. In the tab, ads will automatically populate as cards, complete with unique backgrounds based on the game. Ad creators will be able to give cards both suggested and specific tags. It's up to the ad creator to decide who will be accepted into the game upon application. When you've been accepted, you'll receive an actionable invite on Xbox Live and the associated Xbox apps. When the notification is selected, you'll automatically get pulled into the game and party relevant to the ad.

Some of the tags players can create include things like "no swearing allowed" and "skilled players only", but also things like "casual players encouraged." A player could create a Killer Instinct training party, for example, looking to help out new players get to grips with some of the game's more complex mechanics.

xbox-looking-for-group-card.JPG

Looking For Group seems like a powerful, intuitive and quite frankly necessary feature for Xbox Live. It feels like a natural progression of the network, and crucially, it eliminates the need for developers to build some of these systems directly into their games. In theory, Microsoft has freed up a lot of development time with this system. Games like Elite Dangerous, which have no in-game LFG system, will benefit immeasurably from it.

Clubs
Elite Dangerous and similar games will also benefit hugely from Clubs. This exciting new feature also enjoys its own tab in game hubs. Club owners can center their Club around a specific game or games, but also around specific activities or group ethos. Henshaw used the example of "parents who can only game after 10 pm", "mic required", "gender inclusive" and so on, as examples of tags people can attach to their Club, to seek like-minded players.

xbox-clubs.JPG

Like LFG, Clubs appear as cards under the relevant game hubs, allowing players to easily find and apply to join different groups. It'll ultimately be up to the Club owner and moderators to decide who joins the group, and it'll also be up to owners and moderators to remove trolls and toxic comments that appear in the group. The Xbox Live terms of service still apply as you'd expect, and any player can report content they deem offensive as usual.

Perhaps the coolest aspect of Clubs is that they also have a dedicated feed, allowing Club members to post game clips, content, and screenshots directly to showcase to the whole group. Additionally, Clubs will get chatrooms, accessible both on Xbox and via the iOS, Android, and Windows 10 apps.

xbox-clubs-chat.JPG

Clubs almost feel like Slack for Xbox Live, allowing groups of like-minded players to band together, get organized and instantly create parties for venturing out online. Sea of Thieves developers Rare told me that Clubs and LFG will enhance their game as well, given the game's persistently connected nature.

Arena
Microsoft's big push into eSports begins with Arena, a system-level feature that allows people to create tournaments and challenges directly on Xbox Live. Microsoft is partnering with eSports groups like ESL, FACEIT, MLG, and more to create tournaments for both first-party games like Killer Instinct, and third-party titles like FIFA.

Game hubs play a part in Arena as well, as game developers will be able to share tournament opportunities to their followers. Those opportunities will appear directly in the feed of players who follow those games, and it only takes a single press to register to participate in the tournament.

xbox-arena.JPG

The tournament screen lists the rules, whether there's an entry fee or prizes, and also dates of required participation. The system will also show you who your opponent is, using their Xbox Live avatar as representation. When you're registered to participate, a countdown timer appears on the dashboard of your Xbox One, and when it's time to join a match you'll get notification on Xbox Live that will pull you straight into the correct game and corresponding match lobby. The Xbox apps for Windows 10 devices, iOS and Android, will also serve notifications to participating combatants, to ensure that everyone who registered for the tournament shows up.

Speaking of people not showing up, I asked Henshaw whether there were concerns about competitions getting derailed due to the ease and availability of signing up. He said that it'll be up to tournament organizers to decide the rules on when non-participating competitors forfeit their matches.

xbox-arena-notification.JPG

The tournament page displays each bracket's winners and losers, all the way up to the overall winner and runner-up. It also presents clips, screenshots and other shared content from matches relevant to the contest, populating them underneath the bracketst for perusal.

Xbox One S and Xbox One Design Lab
Finally, we got to take a quick look at the new Xbox One S and its controller. The Xbox One S is indeed 40% smaller than the original Xbox One, and while that sounds like an impressive reduction, in reality, it's not really that much smaller. It can fit inside the original Xbox One, but I have a feeling that percentage is factoring in the removal of the power supply brick which is, of course, a hugely welcome development.

xbox-one-s-2.jpg

Owners of Kinect will be able to get a free adapter from Microsoft if they upgrade to the Xbox One S, but beyond the removal of the Kinect port, everything you'd expect of a Xbox One is still present. When I had previously asked whether the Xbox One S would ever arrive in black, I was told that Microsoft is always listening to feedback. So get voting on UserVoice if you want to see it!

Asked about the potential for airflow and heating problems, given that the power supply is now inside the console itself, Henshaw said that the Xbox One S has been tested through "millions of hours" to ensure airflow would be consistent. Considering the Red Ring of Death debacle of the Xbox 360, I'd expect Microsoft would go all out to avoid a repeat of that situation. The new Xbox One S also has a fixed internal hard drive, meaning you'll need to utilize the console's three USB ports to expand the storage.

design-lab-hero.jpg

The new Xbox One S controller has textured grips, similar to the Elite controller, but also features Bluetooth. The Bluetooth functionality will work with Windows 10 and 10 Mobile, but that it was up to developers to make use of the feature in their games. The Xbox One S controller also has improved range when compared to the current controllers, and Henshaw said there were no plans to launch an Xbox One Elite Controller with Bluetooth at this time.

Microsoft also gave us a closer look at the new Xbox Design Lab controllers, which allows users to customize the colors of the latest Xbox controller, and even engrave them with text. You can produce and order a custom design, or save your designs for later purchasing. While the Xbox Design Lab is initially launching just in North America, Henshaw if there were plans to take the design lab beyond North America, and he said the goal is to expand gradually to offer it globally.

Bright, social future
The additions of LFG, Xbox Play Anywhere, Arena, and Clubs exemplify Microsoft's push to turn Xbox Live into the most accessible social platform for gaming. Microsoft expects that even those who aren't traditionally console gamers might see the value in creating Clubs and LFG ads for PC games that fail to support those kinds of features natively. It's plainly obvious how connected games like The Division, Destiny, and Elite Dangerous will benefit massively from those social aspects.

From Arena and eSports to the six teraflop 'monster' Project Scorpio, Xbox is fully resurgent and on the offensive in the ever evolving console war. We'll have to wait and see to find out if those bets pay off.

E3 2016: Hands-On with ReCore – The Metroid Prime Successor

ReCore-Delayed.jpg

ReCore sold itself to millions of gamers with one simple statement: “from the makers of Metroid Prime”. That Gamecube classic is still regarded by many as one of the best games of all time. Anyone who had a hand in creating that masterpiece has a bit of a free pass when pitching new games to those fans. It helped that the game looked great by itself, with an engaging main character, and a mysterious looking storyline. Finally, after a year of waiting, I got to go hands-on with ReCore, and so far it’s living up to its Metroid Prime pedigree.

ReCore stars Joule, a settler who finds herself stranded and alone when something goes wrong on her mission to Far Eden. The robots that were meant to help her and her fellow adventurers settle on the planet have run amok, at least most of them have. A select few are still friendly, and are helping her along her way to figuring out what went wrong, and how to possibly fix it.

I keep referring to it as a Metroid Prime successor, and with good reason. A lot of the core concepts from that game are present here, with a lone woman exploring a vast alien landscape. However, ReCore definitely blazes its own path. In fact, it has a similarly impressive resume in that it is being shepherded by Keiji Inafune, the creator of Mega Man.

ReCore_Joule-and-Mack.jpg

And really, when you know that, a lot of the pieces of this game come together. It is a third-person action game in many ways, but it is also a platformer, and even features lock-on combat, ala Metroid Prime. It also has the traversal and puzzle mechanics from MP, with color coded devices that require you to have the right robot helping you out.

You can switch between them as necessary, but you’ll still need to have found them, and possibly upgraded them to take advantage. For example, in the E3 2016 demo there were yellow railways along the walls and ceilings. If you had your spider-looking robot out they can create an anchor point for you to latch onto, then carry you along the path to your destination. It felt very much like the magnetic railways that Samus could ride on in ball form.

These types of roadblocks will also create the backtracking that Metroid fans are so used to, and crave so much. You’ll run up against areas that you can’t access, but later on you’ll gain entry thanks to your robot companions.

Combat feels very Metroid-esque as well, with color-coded enemies that you have to match your laser to. You can still kill a yellow enemy with red lasers, but it will take longer. There is even a charge shot that deals extra damage. Enemies take patience and thought to take out, as they can easily swarm you and become overwhelming. I even died once in the demo, which is rare at E3.

Recore-E3.jpg

Platforming was still a little rough, but the team has a lot of time to work out any kinks in that system. It wasn’t terrible at all, but pressing the right buttons, and making sure you land on your target was troublesome at times, with both a double jump and a boost mechanic creating some definite challenges.

Even with this small fault, ReCore was an E3 favorite of mine. It’s probably not going to be as grandiose as Metroid Prime or Mega Man, but it is a fantastic amalgamation of those two venerable series. If you’re a fan of either, ReCore should be on your watch list for the coming months.

ReCore hits Xbox One and Windows 10 PC on September 13th.

Watched the E3 gameplay trailer for Recore yesterday. I gotta say it does look interesting. I'll probably wait until next year if it's worth a purchase. I gotta pick up the new Tomb Raider. I'm not paying full price for SP titles that aren't 5 star games.

If you see a pirate crew in this game either named NewDayRockz or led by someone with the gamertag FleeceJhnsn... :roflmao2:

anyone here getting the XBOX S?i went an put $50 on mines the other day.i got the 2tb system because it only makes sence because its $300 for the 500gb system $350 for the 1tb and $400 for the 2tb.i have the forza 6 console which has the 1tb hard drive.so i figured $50 more dollars why wouldnt i get the 2tb. i have always thought that if a console came out with multiple systems the higher system would run better.i dont know why i think like that but i always get the higher console.

Xbox Co-Creator Hopes Sony Will Respond to Microsoft's Invitation to Link XBL and PSN

In March, Microsoft turned heads when it publicly invited other platform holders, including potentially Sony, to have their online games connect to Xbox Live. Never before has there been cross-play between Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. While Sony did respond to Microsoft's invitation, the company's statement was indecisive.

Now, Xbox co-creator Ed Fries has called on Sony to respond to Microsoft's invitation in a more official capacity. This came up in an IGN interview in which Fries--who no longer works at Microsoft--talked about the "great job" Xbox boss Phil Spencer is doing.

"When I decided to quit Microsoft, I had 1,200 people working for me. One person walked into my office and said, 'Should I quit, too?' That was Phil Spencer," he said.

Spencer is a "great guy" who has a "ton of loyalty" to Microsoft, Fries added. Spencer, who was originally recruited by Fries, has worked for Microsoft for more than 25 years.

Fries went on to say that Spencer has done a great job of "fixing" some of the problems related to Microsoft's Xbox One unveiling and initial launch.

"A great example is this opening of Xbox Live for cross-platform play," Fries said. "I hope that Sony is going to respond. It's good to see some of the war kind of ramping down; more respect and cooperation between those two groups."

"I'm very optimistic for the future of both companies."

There have been no Xbox One/PS4 cross-play games yet, but Psyonix's soccer-with-cars game Rocket League could be the first, if it's ever allowed. Psyonix said it's not a technical matter holding it back, but rather it's an issue of politics.

"The only thing we have to do now is sort of find out where we stand politically with everyone, and then it's full steam ahead to finish the solution that we've already started," the developer said.

RED DEAD REDEMPTION TO BECOME BACKWARD COMPATIBLE ON XBOX ONE THIS FRIDAY
Share.
This time, it's official.

BY JONATHON DORNBUSH Rockstar Games has announced that Red Dead Redemption will become officially backward compatible on the Xbox One this Friday, July 8.

Xbox 360 Red Dead owners will be able to play the game on Xbox One no matter the version of the game they owned — the original Red Dead Redemption, Undead Nightmare, or the Game of the Year edition — while those who didn't can purchase the game on Xbox One beginning Friday.

The 2010 game was leaked as a possible backward compatible title earlier this year. Access to the game was later removed, however, with Larry Hyrb noting that the game was made available for a brief window due to a testing error.

Set in the early 1900's, Red Dead Redemption followed the story of former outlaw John Marston. For those returning to the game later this week or trying it out for the first time, check out IGN's original review of the "must-play game."

Maps reportedly leaked for a sequel, which is also reportedly a prequel, to the game earlier this year.
