Mass Effect: Andromeda and Need for Speed set for 2017

BioWare RPG delayed while EA's flagship formerly annual racing franchise is stalled for the second time in three years

Electronic Arts' holiday slate of releases took a hit today, as the publisher delayed one major title, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and confirmed that the next Need for Speed won't be ready this year, either.

Originally announced at E3 2015 with a holiday 2016 release window, Mass Effect: Andromeda has been pushed to "early 2017." In an update on the official website, BioWare general manager Aaryn Flynn explained the decision to delay the game.

"As we've been playing the game at the studio recently, it's showing us that we're taking the game in the right direction," Flynn said. "But we also know we need the right amount of time to make sure we deliver everything the game can be and should be - that's our commitment from all of us to all of you."

Flynn added that more of the game would be shown at the EA Play E3-adjacent event.

As for Need for Speed, there won't be a new installment for consoles this year, as revealed by developer Ghost Games on the franchise's webpage. This will be only the second time in 15 years that the franchise has skipped its annual console release. The first time was in 2014, when development duties transitioned fully to Ghost Games and the studio readied the series reboot that launched last November.

Nearly One Million Gamertags Are Being Released Back Into the Wild Starting May 18

GTRecycleHERO.jpg

No other console gives you the ability to customize your virtual representation and make your experience more social with easy-to-change Gamertags. Many of the best and most desirable Gamertags were unavailable…until now. We’ve listened to your feedback and once again Team Xbox is excited to announce the release of a large number of previously-unavailable Gamertags!

Starting on Wednesday, May 18th @ 11:00AM PST, we will begin releasing nearly one million Gamertags to our valued Xbox Live Gold customers with active subscriptions and at least 1 year of cumulative Xbox Live Gold tenure. These Gamertags will be released over a 24-hour period, to give our fans in various countries an equal chance to get one.

So, where did all these previously-unavailable Gamertags come from? These Gamertags are from the original Xbox era, the same source of Gamertags we used in our 2011 release. These accounts never migrated to Xbox 360 and as a result they have been inactive for quite some time.

While it may be challenging to find the exact Gamertag you want, keep trying, as there are many great Gamertags that will be released. Although we can’t share the actual list, we can tell you that many of the available Gamertags are in the following categories:

  • Proper Names
  • Pop culture references (Entertainment, sports, gaming)
  • Types of Food
  • Geography and Travel
  • Science and Technology
  • Math and Numbers
  • Animals
  • Some of the greatest inventions of all time
Access to these newly-released Gamertags will be available on Xbox.com, which is the most convenient way to make a Gamertag change. Customers can also access these Gamertags within the Xbox App on Windows 10 and on the Xbox One console. Xbox 360 customers will need to use Xbox.com, the Xbox App on Windows 10, or an Xbox One console to participate given that access to these newly-released Gamertags is not available from an Xbox 360 console. To change your Gamertag on the web, please visit https://account.xbox.com/changegamertag.

To determine the tenure of your Xbox Live Gold account, view your Profile on an Xbox One console or on the Xbox App on Windows 10.

Changing your Gamertag won’t impact your Gamerscore, Achievements, or your Friends list. However, it may make you the envy of your friends and fellow gamers.

Remember, we rely on your feedback to bring the features you want to Xbox Live, so keep the suggestions coming!

EA Play: The Public Electronic Arts E3 Event Announced - IGN News
01:11
E3 has traditionally only ever included a trade show component, open exclusively to members of the games industry, but recent years have seen the likes of Nintendo breaking away from the accepted structure and hosting public-facing events.

The latest company to follow suit is EA, which has foregone its usual show-floor presence at the show to host EA Play in both Los Angeles and London, an event that will feature many of the games shown off in the publisher's conference, including Titanfall 2.

For more on the games that'll be at the expo and other ways you can attend E3 2016, be sure to head over to the E3 wiki.

Sources: Xbox One getting huge upgrade in 2017, slim model later this year
The "Xbox One-Two" will be more than four times as powerful (!) as the Xbox One

EFvFLyG.0.jpg

Microsoft has two new Xbox consoles on the horizon, according to reports on Kotaku that Polygon has corroborated with its own sources. Those sources also told Polygon that one of those new consoles will be over four times more powerful than the current Xbox One and that the announcement at E3 was triggered by, among other things, a faster-than-expected timeline for Sony’s own upgraded PlayStation 4. The other console, a slimmed-down version of the current hardware, will also be getting a redesigned controller.

The latter is scheduled to be revealed at E3 or at an event shortly before, as plans are currently in discussion. Tom Warren at Polygon sister site The Verge reports that the console will be "40 percent smaller than the current model and will likely include 4K support," which will be for video content specifically, though the existing Xbox One models include scaling hardware to output games at various resolutions. Our sources also confirm that this will be the smallest Xbox ever made.

Current plans have the smaller Xbox One scheduled for release this August. Pricing for the system has not been finalized.

The other console, codenamed Scorpio, is unlikely to be released until late 2017, according to Polygon's sources. It will likely be announced in the next month, though plans are somewhat in flux. Like the all-but-confirmed PS4 "Neo," Scorpio represents an evolution of console generations, one that straddles the line somewhat between an entirely new installment of the Xbox platform and a continuation of the existing Xbox One.

Power is a primary concern for Microsoft with Scorpio. The PS4 has remained a constant leader over the Xbox One in this respect, with games on the platform usually running at higher resolution and a higher framerate on the PS4 than their Xbox One counterparts. Microsoft is determined to end this narrative.

The Xbox One is believed to operate a peak target of 1.32 teraflops, compared to the 1.84 teraflop performance numbers attributed to the PS4. Meanwhile, per documents secured by Giant Bomb's Austin Walker — and corroborated by our sources — the PlayStation 4 "Neo," at approximately 2.25 times more powerful than the PS4, is likely to have a peak performance number of 4.14 teraflops.

The current performance target for Microsoft's Scorpio is approximately 6 teraflops.

Previous reports and documentation for Sony's new console have suggested that PS4 games will work on both its current iteration of the system and the Neo, and our sources indicate this is also the case with Scorpio. Kotaku also reports that Scorpio will be "technically capable of supporting the Oculus Rift." Polygon's sources verified that while Scorpio will be technically capable of supporting the Oculus Rift, Microsoft's relationship with the virtual reality headset maker hasn't changed since it was announced last summer.

oculus-rift-xbox-one-665x385.jpg

Microsoft originally had no plans to announce Scorpio in 2016, preferring to wait until next year, possibly at its own event prior to E3 2017. This would be in keeping with the company's existing precedent for new hardware launches. This was timed to combat expected plans by Sony to announce and launch the Neo in 2017. However, after GDC, evidence industry-wide has indicated that Sony's timetable for the Neo either has accelerated or was always intended for this fall. Because of this and other factors, Microsoft is feeling pressure to announce both its new, smaller Xbox One console and the upgraded Scorpio — colloquially referred to internally as Xbox One-Two — at this year's E3, or a last-minute event just prior to the LA convention.

There are those internally at Microsoft who are sensitive to consumer unrest at the prospect of more powerful hardware so quickly compared to the previous console generation. The Xbox 360 was released in November 2005, the Xbox One in November 2013. Discussions are underway about how best to manage that. A price for Scorpio is also still under active discussion, and is unlikely to be revealed until next year.

More clear, however, is that "universal compatibility" is a core principle for the system. Scorpio is currently being designed to support all Xbox One software.

Much of this information has been rumored for weeks. Well-known Microsoft insider Paul Thurrott,'s site, Thurrott.com originally discussed new Xbox hardware in a post written by Brad Sams in April, which also reported that a new controller was in development (ed's note: This article originally miscredited reporting on Xbox rumors on thurrott.com to Paul Thurrott. We regret the error).

Thurrott also reported on additional expected convergence between Windows 10's gaming platform and the Xbox One, which Kotaku further corroborated. The outlet learned of a specific initiative, codenamed Project Helix, to launch day and date versions of Xbox One software on Windows 10 as well, though this is already being borne out with the PC launch of Quantum Break in March and the simultaneous launch of Halo Wars 2 on Windows 10 and Xbox One later this year.

Xbox head Phil Spencer, during a keynote at an event in February of this year, suggested the possibility of new Xbox hardware that followed a different path from previous generational transitions. "We can effectively feel a little bit more like we see on PC, where I can still go back and run my old Doom and Quake games that I used to play years ago but I can still see the best 4K games come out and my library is always with me," Spencer said. "Hardware innovation continues while the software innovation is able to take advantage and I don't have to jump a generation and lose everything that I played on before."

In a follow-up interview after Spencer's keynote, the Xbox head elaborated on the company's philosophy for a new approach to hardware with Polygon's Nick Robinson. "We look at these other ecosystems out there like mobile, tablet and PC and we see that they have a very continuous evolution cycle in hardware, whereas between console generations most of the evolution is making it cheaper and potentially making it smaller," Spencer said. "Both are meaningful but don't make the games play any better. If you look at PC specifically and see the evolution that happens there, there's no reason why console can't ride that same curve.

"I look at the ecosystem that a console sits in and I think that it should have the capability of more iteration on hardware capability. Sony is doing this with VR and adding VR capabilities mid-cycle to the PlayStation 4 and they are doing that by adding another box. I don't mean that as a negative. But it's not changing what the core console is about.

"For consoles in general it's more important now than it's ever been, because you have so many of these other platforms that are around. It used to be that when you bought your console you were way ahead of the price performance curve by so much, relative to a PC. But now PCs are inexpensive and your phones are getting more and more capable.

"I still think a console is the best price to performance deal that is out there but when you look at the evolution ... I'm not going to announce our road map for hardware ... but what I wanted to say on stage for people when they see this vision of ours and question our commitment to console I want to make sure that people see that what we are doing enables us to be more committed to what consoles are about than we've ever been and innovate more consistently than we ever have. That's the key for me."

Make sure to follow all of Polygon's coverage of this year's E3 right here.

I hated my career. They put you in tag single matches against the Rock and Sting on regular shows or even on the main event show. It's not authentic to tv programming. Then you're so overmatched you have to try to get a count out win at times.

Did Spencer announce they were bringing back summer of arcade last E3? I thought that's when they showed Cup Head.

More Social, More Games, More Devices – What’s In The Xbox Update Coming This Summer

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Mike Ybarra, Director of Program Management for Xbox, to discuss the Xbox One system update releasing to Preview program members this week and the Xbox App update that will follow in a few weeks. Watch the interview below and read details about the update from Mike.

Last November, we transformed Xbox One to make it faster and more social with the New Xbox One Experience, and since then we’ve been delivering regular fan requested features and updates. Expected this week, we’re releasing into Preview a summer update that will start to rollout to our Xbox Preview audience for Xbox One, and in the coming weeks we’ll release it to the Xbox app (beta) on Windows 10. New features will rollout to the Preview audience in waves, not all at once. We’re really excited about this update as it lays the foundation to bring together more people and more games across devices through Xbox Live.

Starting this summer, Xbox One and the Xbox app will receive the first of two updates that will help you stay connected with friends on Xbox Live and enjoy even more games across your favorite devices. Cortana will come to Xbox One; the Xbox and Windows Stores will start to become unified; we will begin to introduce your top PC games with Game Hubs to Xbox Live, and more. These updates are crucial to giving our fans around the world a great gaming experience wherever and whatever they play.

Here are some of the features that are expected to start to rollout to Xbox One Preview this week, and the Xbox app (beta) in the coming weeks:

Xbox One

  • Cortana on Xbox One: Cortana is coming to Preview in the U.S., U.K., France, Italy, Germany and Spain first, and gamers can expect the familiar Cortana experience found on other Windows 10 devices. Cortana voice commands on Xbox One will work with both headsets and Kinect. You’ll be able to use Cortana to find great new games, see what your friends are up to, start a party, accomplish common tasks, turn on your Xbox One if you’re using Kinect, and more. We’ll continue to build Cortana features over time and our vision is to use Cortana to help elevate your experience as your personal digital assistant for gaming. Just say “Hey Cortana” or launch the app to get started!

  • New Game Collection: We’re updating the Game Collection interface to make it faster and easier to find and launch the games you’re looking for. Now you’ll be able to see more of your Game Collection, quickly access your own ‘Ready to Install’ tab, and get more information about titles in your queue.

  • Facebook Friend Finder on Xbox One: Facebook Friend Finder is expanding from the Xbox app to Xbox One and is a great way to find and add your Facebook friends on Xbox. As more gamers link their Facebook and Xbox Live accounts, you’ll start seeing more suggestions for Facebook friends to add and game with on Xbox Live.

  • Improved sharing on Xbox One: We’ve made it easier to share your screenshots, GameDVR clips, and achievements on Xbox One. Gamers can now share their most epic clips and captures with the community in fewer steps.
Xbox app and Windows 10 gaming

  • Edit and share GameDVR clips on any video editor: Create that perfect gaming montage with your favorite video editor with clips you recorded on either Xbox One or your PC. Once you’re finished editing, you’ll be able to upload the clip back to Xbox Live through the Xbox app.
  • Updated GameDVR management: You can now manage your captures straight from your profile. This new destination allows you to share, start your own uploads, and see progress in the queue.
  • 60 fps game clip recording with the Game bar: Using the new “Very High” video quality setting in the Xbox app, you will be able to record your game clips in up to 60 frames per second (in addition to 30 frames per second) easily, all from the Game bar (Windows + G).
• Share to Twitter from Xbox app: In the Xbox app, you’ll be able to share game clips and screenshots from Xbox Live to Twitter through the sharing options on each capture.
  • Windows Game bar improved full-screen support: One of the most common requests we see for the Windows 10 GameDVR feature is the ability to use the Windows Game bar with more games running in full-screen. We’ve added support for six additional games in full-screen mode with Windows game bar: League of Legends, World of Warcraft, DOTA 2, Battlefield 4, Counterstrike: Global Offensive, and Diablo III. With those games, you can now use Windows + G to bring up the Windows Game bar when the game is running full-screen.
Xbox One and Xbox app

  • Top PC games show up on Xbox Live: We’re bringing the top PC games like League of Legends and XCOM 2 together with the Xbox Live community. Meaning, your favorite PC games will have their own Game Hubs on Xbox Live. Whether you’re on your PC, Xbox, or mobile phone, you’ll be able to see what PC games your friends are playing, share your own PC gaming clips and screenshots with the community, and message your friends on Xbox Live. On both Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs, you‘ll also be able to party chat with your friends no matter what they’re doing.

  • Xbox and Windows Store convergence: We’re starting to combine the best of the Xbox Store and Windows Store to give gamers a single cohesive experience across their devices. On Xbox One, we’ve streamlined the shopping experience to help you find the games you love faster and at the best prices. You’ll be able to filter, browse and search results by genre, read reviews written by fellow gamers – including those voted “most helpful” by the Xbox Live community, easily recognize what titles are on sale with strikethrough pricing in lists, and more. We’ve also added several new channels to help you discover the content you love even faster. On the Windows Store, we’re adding support so gamers can browse and purchase bundles, episodic games, season passes, virtual currency and other game add-ons and DLC.

  • More personal Activity Feed: Being able to choose what’s posted to your Activity Feed across Xbox One and the Xbox app is a big fan-requested feature. With the new settings, you can now decide what will get automatically shared to your feed. You can now also craft the perfect Activity Feed posts. At the top of your Activity Feed, easily access and choose from recently unlocked achievements and captures, preview what your post would look like, and then share your greatest gaming moments.
For the update coming this summer, we’re taking the same approach we used for the New Xbox One Experience with an opt-in program to let fans choose how they want to participate. We’ll begin testing a set of features expected this week with an opt-in audience in Xbox Preview. Like all Preview releases, the features are a work-in-progress as we refine them before they launch to the broader community, and some features can stay in Preview for extended periods of time. Additionally, we’re merging the Windows Insider program with the Xbox One Preview program to streamline feedback and updates.

As we continue to evolve the Xbox experience, we appreciate each and every suggestion provided on Xbox Feedback. In just this past year, we’ve released more than 200 new features inspired by fan feedback on Xbox One through our regular updates and the New Xbox One Experience. In the upcoming months, the team will be focusing all of our efforts on the next two updates and won’t be releasing an update every month.

We’re very excited for the Xbox update coming this summer. Keep the feedback coming and thanks for helping make Xbox great! I’ll see you on Xbox Live.

Leaked promo posters show off Injustice 2

slack_for_ios_upload.0.jpg

A helpful tipster sent along to Polygon what appears to be a shot of a promotional poster for Injustice 2 featuring The Flash and Batman with this tagline: "Every battle defines you."

In a letter sent to Gamestop managers, and also shared with Polygon, corporate tells local stores they are sending along the posters, which are free with pre-orders for the still unannounced game.

The posters are only available while supplies last, according to the tipster.

There is no word on what platforms the title is coming to, but it's possible one of the placeholder entries in the GameStop computers for a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One title is for the game.

We've reached out to Warner Bros. Interactive for comment and will update this story when they respond. But it seems likely, this game could be announced during E3 or the lead up to the big show.

Have more details? Shoot 'em over.

In the original Injustice: Gods Among Us, released in 2013, players took control of characters from the DC Universe to fight one another in a variety of DC Universe settings. The original game was made by Mortal Kombat developer NetherRealm Studios.

The game received generally positive reviews.

Make sure you don't miss out on any of next week's E3's livestreaming. You can check out the full schedule in our one-stop shop for the show's streams.

Hopefully Rockstar announces a story mode DLC for GTA V. I tried but can't get into the online games.
