Xbox Live is working across the Xbox One and Xbox 360 platforms this morning, a day after the service was down for many. But the PlayStation Network was down for "maintenance" on the PlayStation 4, according to a system message.

Xbox Live appeared to come back to something close to normal functionality late Christmas night, finally allowing Xbox One users to log into Xbox Live after a day of spotty service, at best.

Here's the latest status update for Xbox Live:

As of 11:00pm ET last night, I had been able to log onto Xbox Live on my Xbox 360 but could not on my Xbox One. Without being able to log in, I couldn't download games, play online or even access the pinned app icons on my system dashboard, which are saved in Microsoft's computing cloud.

PSN had been working on my PS3 last night but not on my PS4, preventing me from accessing the PlayStation store or play games online.

Sony's PSN status page has itself been slow to update, displaying a Dec 24 status for much of yesterday and now displaying a Dec 25 status:

It is possible that Xbox Live and PSN were knocked offline due to heavy use on Christmas day—we've seen their networks get flooded by new users before. But the prevailing concern is that both were actually disabled by an online collective called Lizard Squad through DDoS attacks, attacks that overwhelm networks with traffic until they slow down or stop working. Lizard Squad had claimed that they would attack both networks for Christmas (For the laughs? It wasn't clear why) and then claimed to stop them by around 9pm ET last night.


A Microsoft rep declined to tell Kotaku yesterday why Xbox Live was down. Sony has not replied to our request for comment.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare developer Sledgehammer Games wants to know who’s the best sniper in town and the studio is giving players the chance to figure out just that in a brand new sniper-only playlist.

The playlist, called “One Shot”, is now live on all platforms until this Monday, December 29 at 9AM Pacific and offers everyone the opportunity to score double XP while dropping any bodies that their crosshairs might find. It features lower health than usual as well as the MORS sniper rifle in five different loadout variations. They are:

The Halo 5 Guardian’s beta officially starts on Dec. 29th and runs through Jan. 18th. But in order to make sure you can start playing as soon as the beta goes live, players can go ahead and start downloading the file that ways over 10GB right now.

From the Halo MCC home page, select Extras. Then select the Halo 5 Guardians beta to begin download. If the option is grayed out, then check back later. The update is currently being distributed right now.

 

A pair of Assassin’s Creed games are available on today’s Countdown to 2015 deal. Grab Black Flag for the Xbox One or Liberation for the Xbox 360.

YouTube/Sky News "Ryan" from Lizard Squad, who is believed to be Julius Kivimäki. Security researcher and former cybersecurity reporter Brian Krebs says he knows exactly who may be behind the massive attacks that took down both Sony's PlayStation Network and Microsoft's Xbox Live platform for two straight days.

A hacker group called Lizard Squad is taking credit for the attacks, and two members of the group have spoken to the media since the outages.

One member going by the alias "Ryan" recently appeared in a television interview on Sky News, and two Lizard Squad members did a radio interview with the BBC in which they were referred to as "Member 1" and "Member 2."

Krebs believes he knows the true identities of both members.

Citing multiple sources, Krebs writes that "Member 1" from the BBC interview and "Ryan" from Sky News is a 16-year-old Finnish teenager named Julius Kivimäki. "Member 2," according to Krebs, "appears" to be a 22-year-old from the United Kingdom named Vinnie Omari.

Facebook Vinnie Omari. Krebs said Omari's voice, which he first heard in the Sky News interview, matches the voice in a video Omari posted on his personal YouTube channel. In the video, Omari discusses a hacking platform called hackerforums.net.

Here's what we know about both Omari and Kivimäki.

  • Kivimäki was arrested by Helsinki police in October 2013 under suspicion of running a giant botnet, according to Krebs' sources. A botnet is a network of private computers that are infected with malicious software that is being remotely controlled without the owner's knowledge. Kivimäki's botnet network consisted of more than 60,000 hacked web servers, Krebs' sources reportedly said.
  • Kivimäki has multiple online aliases, which include "Zee," "Zeekill," and " Ry|an."
  • He was also believed to be in possession of more than 3,000 stolen credit cards when he was arrested in October 2013, according to Krebs.
  • Vinnie Omari lives in London, according to his Facebook page, and is believed to have been involved in other hacks.
  • He is believed to be connected to a hacking group called "Null Consolidated," which was responsible for a Dec. 23 attack that defaced a website called SoloMid — a popular website that publishes strategy guides for the game "League of Legends," according to The Daily Dot.
  • It is also possible that Vinnie Omari is another pseudonym. Krebs' report makes it sound as if Vinnie Omari is his real name, but The Daily Dot describes it as an alias.
It is unclear whether Kivimäki and Omari are definitely behind the recent PlayStation Network and Xbox Live attack, but Kivimäki's Facebook photo does look a lot like the "Ryan" who appeared on Sky News.

It is also important to keep in mind that it hasn't been confirmed that both Kivimäki and Omari are part of Lizard Squad and have been involved in the attacks. But Krebs does have a wealth of resources and years of experience researching and reporting on cybersecurity, so it's possible that his report is legitimate.

It's a big day for Halo 5: Guardians. Not only does the game's multiplayer beta start today on Xbox One, but Microsoft has also revealed three versions of the game you can preorder starting today.

The bundles range in price from $60 to $250, and include an assortment of bonuses such as posters, steelbooks, and even a statue for the limited collector's edition. Unfortunately, Microsoft did not share much in the way of specifics regarding the digital content, nor did it supply any images of the statue.

The three Halo 5 preorder bundles are below:

  • Standard Edition ($60) -- Halo 5: Guardiansplus an exclusive poster, only available to those who pre-order.
