Xbox One Console Reviews

I'm realizing this game isn't meant to be played alone at all. I think that's where most of these negative comments are comin from.

figured all those FPS players who skip the story mode and go straight to multiplayer wouldve felt right at home in Destiny.. Bungie didnt pace this game like that apparently

Right now, Destiny is an extremely enjoyable, gorgeous-looking game that doesn't completely deliver on its ambitious goals. Whether that keeps it from deserving a spot on your shelf will ultimately be up to you, but my final thoughts will be laid bare before this time next week.

I haven't finished the game yet, but as of right now Destiny feels like a 7.5- 8.0 game IMO. Maybe that will change when i finish the game.

THe thing I hate about these last two generations of consoles was developers releasing unfinished games. I understand updates for bug fixes and roster updates , but they are releasing games with modes and levels missing. I know a lot goes into developing a great game, and the programmers are on a schedule, but I'd rather wait another 6 months for a game to get the full experience. The Division was pushed back till next year, but if that's what it takes to make a great title, I'm all for it.

EGM - 6.5/10

With a lifeless world, a hazily plotted, repetitive campaign, and an endgame that quickly resorts to a slow grind for marginally better loot, Destiny fails to deliver on the promise of its concept and the enormous potential of its gameplay systems.

The Good Shooting feels solid; PvP is enjoyable enough.

The Bad Too little content and too much repetition to justify your attention in the long run.

The Ugly An actual line of dialogue from the game: “I don’t even have time to explain why I don’t have time to explain.”

If you've been schooling extra-terrestrials by way of Destiny's Strike missions this week, you may have stumbled on a mission reward known as a "Strange Coin". I've got a couple rattling around in my inventory, I think. Wondering what they're for? Wonder no longer.

As passed on by Gamers Heroes, Strange Coins are obtained by participating in special events such as weekly Heroic Vanguard Strikes, though you'll sometimes be lucky enough to receive one after beating the first Public Event of the day, or by decrypting an engram. There may be other ways to get ahold of them - by all means fill me in.

image_41635_620.jpg

The coins can be traded for Exotic weapons and upgrades (including perks for Sparrows) by speaking to a mysterious NPC, Xur, who only visits the game's Tower area at weekends. There you go: puzzle solved. The only remaining question, I guess, is what's so strange about these coins. I mean, being exchanged for items strikes me as fairly standard behaviour for currency.

Here are some pointers on what to do when you've completed Destiny's story.

Bungie and Activision really hyped Destiny up. The campaign is boring as hell and multiplayer is cool though. You're just going back to the same area over and over. Just started playing the Xbox One version over the the weekend hopefully it gets better.

Microsoft just announced in a press release that it has acquired Mojang, creators of Minecraft, in a $2.5 billion deal. Furthermore, all three of Mojang's original founders, including Markus "Notch" Persson, will be leaving Mojang following the acquisition.

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer talks about the acquisition in an Xbox Wire blog post, where he confirms that the official Minecraft convention, Minecon, will continue next year under the wings of Microsoft.

Owen Hill of Mojang also weighed in over at the developer's official website, where he posted a short FAQ about the deal—mentioning the departure of the company's founders, and, most importantly, confirming that the non-Xbox versions of Minecraft will continue to be actively developed and supported:
Why did you sell Minecraft?
Minecraft has grown from a simple game to a project of monumental significance. Though we're massively proud of what Minecraft has become, it was never Notch's intention for it to get this big.
As you might already know, Notch is the creator of Minecraft and the majority shareholder at Mojang. He's decided that he doesn't want the responsibility of owning a company of such global significance. Over the past few years he's made attempts to work on smaller projects, but the pressure of owning Minecraft became too much for him to handle. The only option was to sell Mojang. He'll continue to do cool stuff though. Don't worry about that.

There are only a handful of potential buyers with the resources to grow Minecraft on a scale that it deserves. We've worked closely with Microsoft since 2012, and have been impressed by their continued dedication to our game and its development. We're confident that Minecraft will continue to grow in an awesome way.

Minecraft means many different things to millions of people across the world, and to each and every Mojangsta. We feel that this is the best way for everyone – you guys included – to benefit.

What about the other editions of Minecraft? Will they stop being developed?

There's no reason for the development, sales, and support of the PC/Mac, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, Vita, iOS, and Android versions of Minecraft to stop. Of course, Microsoft can't make decisions for other companies or predict the choices that they might make in the future.

We're extremely proud of all editions and the awesome things you have achieved through playing together.

Is the game going to change? Will we still be able to make videos, mods, awesome builds, and all the cool stuff we've created over the past few years?

Minecraft will continue to evolve, just like it has since the start of development. We don't know specific plans for Minecraft's future yet, but we do know that everyone involved wants the community to grow and become even more amazing than it's ever been. Stopping players making cool stuff is not in anyone's interests.

What about the Mojang staff? What's happening to you guys?

Though it's too early to confirm which of us will continue working on Minecraft or other projects, we predict that the vast majority (if not all) Mojangstas will continue to work at Mojang for the time being.

The founders: Notch, Carl, and Jakob are leaving. We don't know what they're planning. It won't be Minecraft-related but it will probably be cool.

What's happening to the other Mojang projects, like Scrolls?

We don't know yet. We'll share any news as soon as we do.

Will you still be able to tweet about features and interact with the community on a personal level, just like you've done over the years?

Yes! That's not going to change.

How much money was the company bought for?

Microsoft acquired Mojang for a smooth 2.5 BILLION dollars.
On his blog, Notch gave his reasons for taking the dealand leaving Mojang:
I was at home with a bad cold a couple of weeks ago when the internet exploded with hate against me over some kind of EULA situation that I had nothing to do with. I was confused. I didn't understand. I tweeted this in frustration. Later on, I watched the This is Phil Fish video on YouTube and started to realize I didn't have the connection to my fans I thought I had. I've become a symbol. I don't want to be a symbol, responsible for something huge that I don't understand, that I don't want to work on, that keeps coming back to me. I'm not an entrepreneur. I'm not a CEO. I'm a nerdy computer programmer who likes to have opinions on Twitter.

As soon as this deal is finalized, I will leave Mojang and go back to doing Ludum Dares and small web experiments. If I ever accidentally make something that seems to gain traction, I'll probably abandon it immediately.
(...)

I love you. All of you. Thank you for turning Minecraft into what it has become, but there are too many of you, and I can't be responsible for something this big. In one sense, it belongs to Microsoft now. In a much bigger sense, it's belonged to all of you for a long time, and that will never change.
It's not about the money. It's about my sanity.

Rumors of the deal first emerged last week, with reports assuming, apparently correctly, that Notch would not remain with Mojang following the transition.

thats what the producers are saying now,to "stick with it"

meanwhile IGN's review is still"in progress"

Destiny 'Unfolds and Transforms Over Time,' Says Executive Producer

Just stick with it until the end.

By Cassidee Moser

The very start of Destiny might feel a bit like a standard shooter to many, but according to Executive Producer Patrick O'Kelley, the multiplayer-driven sci-fi shooter becomes an entirely different experience once a player reaches the level cap of 20 and can begin to experience the endgame missions and objectives.

“I think what players will find is that the game unfolds and transforms over time,” O'Kelley told Xbox Wire. “In the first hour, it might feel like a familiar shooter. Then, players will start to see other players in the world. They will undertake cooperative and competitive activities without really worrying about it. Or they might keep on a solo journey but partake in public events. Eventually, they’ll go to the Tower and learn some of the mechanics to improve their character. They’ll make decisions about character customization and ability customization."

In other Destiny-related news, a Reddit user appears to have found a Master Chief easter egg in the form of a building on Mars.

Asking gamers to stick with it would have worked earlier this year when nothing was coming out. Saying that now before all the fall releases is gonna be a hard sell.

Did you know Mass Effect was originally designed as a Puzzle Quest spin-off? That's not true at all. I'm just establishing a baseline for Did You Know Gaming's video exploration of true Mass Effect facts and Easter eggs.

They might not be as exciting as the ones I made up in my head, but that doesn't make the facts you'll learn in this video any less fascinating. Did you know...

  • Mass Effect was conceived by BioWare developers drunk on the creative freedom of Star Wars: The Old Republic.
  • Some 64 percent of Mass Effect players are too kind-hearted.
  • The Geth are immensely more save-able than the Quarians.
  • Player feedback directly led to Mass Effect 2's faster load times, increased customization options and hot, hot Garrus love.
  • Krogan faces are based on wrinkle-faced bat faces. Very large wrinkle-faced bats.
  • Fulfilling the development team's wish to have an exclusively female race, the Asari feature head fins inspired by modern hair styles and blue skin inspired by Star Trek's green-skinned Orion women.
  • A design for a male Asari was created, but why?
  • The Silurian race was designed to resemble the classic grey alien look. Party member Mordin's design influence was incredibly old Clint Eastwood.
  • How much I love bullet lists?
They've even thrown in some cool Easter eggs at the end. I've got to find that space cow.

True but what's to stop people from trading it in to get something else. A MMO needs players to stay.

WWE 2K15 delayed to November 21 on PS4 & Xbox One

But 360/PS3 versions still on track for October 31.

38656_1_502307de4e.jpg

WWE 2K15 has been delayed to November 21 on PS4 and Xbox One, 2K has confirmed. The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions have not been affected and are still expected to release on October 31.

2K says that the delay "is in the interest of delivering the best possible WWE experience to you, the fans, and 2K's development teams are working hard to ensure its success."

"Visual Concepts and Yuke's are committed to delivering the most authentic and action-packed WWE experience to date, including release for the very first time on next-generation consoles," added Greg Thomas, president of Visual Concepts. "The additional development time enables our talented teams to ensure the WWE 2K15 next-gen experience fully meets our expectations."

The delay means that WWE 2K15 will now release during the same week as Far Cry 4 and Grand Theft Auto 5 on PS4 and Xbox One.

Destiny is not getting great review scores. In fact, it's getting resoundingly mediocre review scores—as of right now, Bungie's ambitious shooter has a 76.29% on GameRankings and a 77 on Metacritic.

That's certainly not the type of critical reception Activision was hoping for when they pumped half a billion (!) dollars into this franchise, and the mediocre reception may wind up costing Bungie a great deal of money, if their 2010 contract is still active. Turns out those review scores—those arbitrary attempts to quantify a game's subjective quality—might be worth $2.5 million.

Let's take a trip back to 2012, when Activision was embroiled in a nasty legal battle with Call of Duty creators Vince Zampella and Jason West. As part of that court case, Activision had to share details of its original contract with Bungie for Destiny, which was then scheduled for release in 2013. Buried in the public documents is this little nugget:
Activision shall pay to Licensor a quality bonus (the "Quality Bonus") in the amount of Two Million Five Hundred Thousand Dollars ($2,500,000) should Destiny Game #1 achieve a rating of at least 90 as determined by gamerankings.com (or equivalent reputable services if gamerankings.com is no longer in sen/ice) as of thirty (30) days following the commercial release of Destiny Game #1 on Xbox 360.
Right now, Destiny is nowhere close to a 90 on GameRankings. It's unlikely if not impossible for the game to make that score by next month.
Now, it's worth noting, the numbers here are old. This contract is from 2010, and I've heard that it's been reworked since then, though I'm not sure if they removed or altered this specific bonus condition. It's certainly possibly that Bungie fought to take it out. Activision is staying mum on the specifics—when I reached out yesterday for clarification, the publisher declined to comment.

Either way, it's insane that there's even a possibility that these review scores—some of which were published just two days after Destiny came out—cost Bungie that much money. For more on how the whole review score system is broken, check out our piece from last year on the many flaws and issues with Metacritic and the way publishers use it.

Destiny's Vault of Glass Raid Has Been Beaten

With more than 1,600 deaths.

By Mike Mahardy
Vault of Glass, Destiny's first raid, has been beaten 14 hours after it went live, by a clan called PrimeGuard.

The clan posted photographic evidence on its Twitter account today, and shared the statistics of the six-person raid: by calculating the members' kill-death ratios, the total amount of deaths works out to about 1,605. The clan called it the "single most challenging" experience the members have had as gamers.

Bungie acknowledged the inaugural victory on its own Twitter account, and also invited PrimeGuard to try the raid on hard tier now. David Dague (aka DeeJ), Bungie's community manager, congratulated the clan as well: "Good game, Guardians. Good game."

Bungie recommends being at least level 26 before attempting Vault of Glass, and considering the higher levels of PrimeGuard's members, even that kind of experience will require grinding. The newest raid is one of a handful of September events the developer has planned, with several more leading into next month.
