Xbox One Console Reviews

Microsoft debuted its NFL on Xbox One app 12 weeks into the 2013 NFL season, a late arrival that limited the app's potential. The app remains one of the major pieces of the company's multi-year partnership with the NFL, and Microsoft is making some important improvements this year to make it more viable and attractive.

"People establish their behaviors and habits early on in the season. And when you introduce something so fundamentally new in week 12, the hardest-core people latch onto it and love it and give feedback, and it's great. But other people, it's harder to do," said David Jurenka, director of sports at Xbox Entertainment Studios, in a presentation to Polygon last week.

Microsoft made a major push for the app's integration with NFL.com fantasy football, but fantasy players fall into a routine very quickly and can be reluctant to change it up so far into the season. And the Xbox One introduced a new paradigm with its TV functionality, where football fans could Snap the NFL app alongside a live game — the console experience itself was something that people had to become accustomed to. Even so, the NFL app became the top app to be used in the Xbox One's Snap mode, and with a update for the 2014 season set to be released in late August, Microsoft is doing its best to make a stronger argument for the app.

One of the top requests from users of the NFL app, according to Jurenka, was the option to interface with a wider variety of fantasy football providers. Last year, the app only supported NFL.com, leaving out millions of fans who use sites such as Yahoo Sports, ESPN and CBS Sports.

"We are going to have more leagues than just NFL.com," said Jurenka. He couldn't name specific sites yet, saying that Microsoft is still "working on finalizing some deals," but assured us that once those agreements are in place, the providers in question will be supported within the app by the kickoff of the season on Sept. 4. A Microsoft representative later confirmed to Polygon that the Xbox One's ESPN app will support ESPN fantasy football for this season.

This year's updated NFL app will support two major streaming video services as well. For the first time, DirecTV's NFL Sunday Ticket will be available on Xbox platforms; it's unclear at this point if DirecTV will release its own Xbox One app, but Microsoft's NFL app will include full integration with NFL Sunday Ticket. DirecTV subscribers will be able to log in with their credentials, along with people who pay for certain tiers of the new NFL Sunday Ticket.tv service. (Sunday Ticket.tv, which DirecTV announced last month, is restricted to those who are unable to subscribe to television service through DirecTV.)

Microsoft's NFL app will also include NFL Now, the new personalized streaming network that the league announced before this year's Super Bowl. The ad-supported free version of NFL Now will allow users to get a stream of news, highlights and analysis about their favorite teams and players. Fans who pay for an NFL Now Plus subscription — the NFL has yet to announce the price or availability of the package — will have access to the "full NFL Films digital vault," according to Jurenka.

"On demand, for the first time ever, we're going to have this content in HD on the TV," he added.

In addition to bringing in new content, Microsoft is aiming to improve the app's existing experience. Jurenka mentioned a second deficiency of the NFL app that launched with the Xbox One last fall: Regarding its Snap functionality, he said, "We found that it wasn't delivering as much value as we knew it could."

As you can see in the screenshots above, the app now sports a silver-and-blue color scheme instead of the current blue theme. The existing app allowed users to set a favorite team and scroll through videos such as highlights of top plays. Now, Microsoft is bringing that content directly to you.

Say you've got Jordy Nelson on your fantasy team, and Aaron Rodgers throws him a 60-yard touchdown pass. Within approximately two minutes of that play, you'll get a notification on your Xbox One (see top screenshot). At that point, you can press the Xbox button on your controller to launch straight into Snap mode and watch the highlight, while your activity in the main screen — playing a game, watching Netflix, whatever — keeps running.

"We're trying to seamlessly weave together scenarios for consumers without them having to do a lot of work," said Jurenka. This year, the NFL app will also be available on Windows 8 as well, so owners of devices such as Surface tablets will be able to take the experience on the go, or simply use the app on its own screen if they choose not to run their cable box through their Xbox One.

As always, the NFL app will provide the maximum utility for people who have a pay-TV subscription that includes the NFL Network and NFL RedZone channels, since a live feed of NFL Network is one of the main parts of the experience,. But even those who don't subscribe to cable will still be able to watch video highlights and receive the latest scores and statistics, since those pieces are provided by the NFL website. Either way, what we've seen of Microsoft's new NFL app makes it seem as if it comes much closer to the company's vision of the Xbox One as a connected console at the center of your living room.

According French website Micromania, the White Xbox One bundled with Sunset Overdrive was posted with a possible release on November 28th for €399.99.

pack-xbox-one-blanche-micromania.jpg

Listed as “Xbox One Blanche,” the posting has since been taken down, but it did state that it was exclusive to the site. However, it is possible the unannounced bundle could be available everywhere.

Microsoft has yet to make a statement about the White Xbox One, although rumors of its release has been speculated for some time now. Last year it was reported that the White Xbox One was given out to Micrososft employees.

Microsoft is bundling at least two major upcoming titles with Xbox One consoles this year: EA Tiburon's Madden NFL 15 and Insomniac Games' Sunset Overdrive, a company spokesperson told Polygon during a press event last week.

The Madden 15 bundle will feature a standard Xbox One unit sans Kinect, along with a download code for a copy of the game, for $399. That's the regular price of a Kinect-free Xbox One, so buyers would be getting Madden 15 for no additional cost. Madden 15 is set for release Aug. 26, and the bundle will be available then as well. The package will also include three Pro Packs for Madden Ultimate Team.

Sunset Overdrive, the colorful open-world action title from Insomniac, will be bundled with a white Xbox One later this year. It will be the first time a white Xbox One is available to the public; Microsoft produced white units for the console's launch last November, but they were specially made only for employees of the company. Sony is bundling a white PlayStation 4 with a copy of Destiny next month, and plans to release that console on its own, at least in Europe.

There's no word at this point on the price or release date of the Sunset Overdrive bundle, but the game itself is set to launch Oct. 28 exclusively on Xbox One.

You can check out an image of the Madden 15 bundle's box below. For more on the two games being bundled with Xbox One consoles, check out our Madden 15 preview from last month and our E3 coverage of Sunset Overdrive.

The original Resident Evil game is being remastered for release on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, Capcom has announced.

Due for a digital-only launch in early 2015, the new port is based on the game's 2002 GameCube "REmake". This new version will include 1080p visuals (720p for last-gen consoles) and 5.1 surround support.

There's no word yet on a European price, but it will cost 3990 yen (about £23) in Japan, where the last-gen console version will arrive before Christmas.

You'll be able to choose between playing the game in its classic 4:3 ratio or in 16:9 widescreen, and have a choice of control styles.

There's a new scrolling camera, too - which appears to be a compromise between a more dynamic camera option and the original's fixed angles.

The classic Resident Evil control scheme remains for purists, along with a more modern style for moving characters more easily - in the direction of the analogue stick.

A grainy image first appeared online this morning (via Famitsu), showing the game's iconic mansion in its GameCube redesign.

Resident Evil first released in 1996 for the original PlayStation, but was then re-made from the ground up for GameCube in 2002, a version of which was later ported to Wii.

Ironically, there's no Wii U version of the port planned, despite the REmake originally being a Nintendo exclusive.

Yet another game won't be making it this fall—publisher 2K Games has delayed their co-op shooter Evolve to February of next year, the company announced during a financial statement today.

Evolve will now be out on February 10, 2015 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

This comes in the wake of a string of other high-profile 2014 delays, including Battlefield: Hardline, delayed from fall 2014 to early 2015, and Dragon Age: Inquisition, delayed from October to November of this year.

Glad I wasn't waiting on Evolve. Capcom needs to do a RE2/3 remake as one big game.

During Activision’s earnings conference call for the second quarter of fiscal year 2014, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg was asked if the publisher has any intention to provide an online subscription service similar to Electronic Arts’ EA Access.

Hirshberg mentioned that the publisher has a lot to focus on and to make sure it gets right in the coming months, to keeps its franchises driving and establishing new ones. He explained that of course Activision is always looking at new opportunities to better serve its players and communities, and is always evaluating new business models. Once those models are proven, they’ll pursue them if they think it makes sense for their players and business.

That said, right now they’re continuing to focus on the other things discussed in the earnings call, which are thought to bring the best returns for the company and its shareholders.
While Hirshberg did not explicitly close the door to that kind of program, it definitely doesn’t seem on the menu, at least for now.

Here we are at week three of our Forza Horizon 2 car reveals. In case you haven’t heard, Forza Horizon 2 will include more than 200 cars at launch. This week we are announcing another 15 radical rides, all specifically built for Xbox One, that are ready to tear up the countryside of southern Europe on Sept. 30.

Nearly every production car from this week’s list has evolved from notable racing history. In 1992, Lancia took its sixth consecutive manufacturer’s title in World Rally competition. The homologated version of the 1992 Lancia Delta HF Integrale EVO found in the game absolutely screams to dust up the back roads. Mercedes needed to keep pace with the BMW M3 in the Group A Touring Car Championship and its efforts resulted in the 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II; after one look, all you need to say is, “That wing.” The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport and the Hennessey Venom GT have all your speed records covered. Looking to manage your throttle control? Either of these rides will challenge you to reel them in.

Here’s this week’s list of newly announced cars in Forza Horizon 2:

lanciadelta_wm_carreveal_week3_forzahorizon2.jpg

1992 Lancia Delta HF Integrale EVO
If you’ve ever been a fan of World Rally Championship racing, then the Delta Integrale EVO is probably a familiar shape. The racing version won a record six manufacturer championships and a total of 46 individual victories over its career. The Integrale EVO version was the penultimate road-going homologation version, benefiting from years of rally competition experience and advancing technology. The biggest change from previous versions is a wider track, necessitating much wider fender flares and several body tweaks for greater ventilation and lower drag. Carried over was the 16-valve Integrale turbo motor, which made great power but even more torque, essential to overcome the additional drag of the permanent all-wheel drive system. Paired with suspension and brakes grown larger to deal with the EVO’s increased performance, this is one of the sweetest-driving Lancia models ever.

mercedes-benze190_wm_carreveal_week3_forzahorizon2.jpg

1990 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II
Racing homologation is a wonderful thing, since it brings race-inspired design and technology to the market. In this case, the 190E 2.5-16 got upwards of 35 more horsepower, a three-way adjustable suspension, bigger brakes and a radical rear-wing and matched body kit. This was biggest wing ever put on a Mercedes four-door. The car is, of course, all business on the inside, offering the luxury and finish you expect from Daimler. Only a little more than 500 of these were produced, so once again Forza is very likely the only chance most of us will get to experience its beauty and grace on the track.

bugattiveyron_wm_carreveal_week3_forzahorizon2.jpg

2011 Bugatti Veyron Super Sport
There is no substitute for the Veyron Super Sport; even among hypercars it stands alone. The Veyron alone is the fastest car in the world but, for some, that is not enough. If the Super Sport cannot quench your thirst for over-the-top speed and horsepower the only alternative is start racing airplanes, because very few machines match the SS for pure ground speed.

hennesseyvenom_wm_carreveal_week3_forzahorizon2.jpg

2012 Hennessey Venom GT
Born with the goal of being a 1,000-plus horsepower car that weighs less than 3,000 pounds, the Hennessey Venom GT is based on the Lotus Elise—complete with the Venom 1,000 horsepower, twin-turbo motor, then lightened. Certainly these are reasonable goals, so long as destroying a Bugatti Veyron’s 0-200 mph time is your primary focus. As a result, the Hennessey Venom GT does 0-200 mph faster than many average cars car do 0-60 mph: 15.3 seconds to be exact. That’s almost 10 seconds faster than the Bugatti. The G-forces felt under full acceleration nearly equal that of a fighter jet doing an inverted loop. The all-aluminum 6.2-liter, twin-turbo, V8 delivers an astonishing 1,200 horsepower, put to the pavement via a six-speed transmission connected to the rear wheels. The car is almost entirely carbon fiber composite and weighs in at a mere 2,685 pounds. The Venom GT has the highest power-to-weight ratio of any car on the market and only five will be built this year.

The rest of this week’s cars include:

  1. 2013 Ariel Atom 500 V8
  2. 2011 BMW 1 Series M Coupe
  3. 1965 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe
  4. 1971 Plymouth Cuda 426 HEMI
  5. 1977 Ford Escort RS1800
  6. 2013 Mazda MX-5
  7. 1970 Nissan Datsun 510
  8. 1980 Renault 5 Turbo
  9. 1974 Toyota Celica GT
  10. 2003 Volkswagen Golf R32
  11. 1983 Audi Sport quattro

It was a great game but I don’t like where this is going.

Square Enix will re-release United Front Games' open-world action game Sleeping Dogs for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Oct. 14, according to an Amazon listing for Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition.

The Definitive Edition release will include the original game and its downloadable content, which is listed as an $85 value, the listing says. The Amazon listing has a retail price of $59.99. Amazon lists a pre-order incentive for Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition: limited edition artbook packaging that includes a 28-page book of concept art from the game.

Publisher Square Enix also used the "Definitive Edition" designation for its re-release of Tomb Raider on PS4 and Xbox One. Developer United Front Games assisted in the development of that port.

For more on Sleeping Dogs, read Polygon's review of the previous generation version of the game.

Remaster year for real. Maybe Sony can impress me next holiday season to get a PS4. Little Big Planet, Driveclub and The Last of Us is not gonna do it.

Ubisoft saying they wont make any more WiiU games until more people buy the system

Nintendo could have killed this generation if they had a more powerful system. While Sony/Microsoft are having droughts, Mario Kart/Hyrule Warriors/Bayonetta/Smash Bros. would have cleaned up this holiday. Nintendo with something similar to XBox Live, their first party lineup plus current third party games is a scary thought. Too bad they are too dumb to realize that.

More details on Xbox One exclusive game subscription platform EA Access have surfaced by way of EA's support site. Among other things, the page explores how EA Access trials differ to regular game demos. In brief: you'll get to download the entire game ahead of release, rather than just a bitten-off, bleeding hunk of it.

The service will cost £3.99, €3.99, $6.99 AU and $6.99 US per month, or £19.99, €24.99, $39.99 AU and $29.99 US per year. Besides granting up to five days of early access to certain games, it allows you to download and play a "Vault" of EA titles at no additional charge, and includes 10 per cent discounts on selected digital purchases. EA Access is currently in beta, with four games on offer at the time of writing: FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, Battlefield 4 and Peggle 2.

According to the page, "each game is different, so each game's trial will be, too. In some titles you'll be able to play one of the game's modes for a limited time, while other times you can jump right into the full game. And since you'll always be playing the real game, any progress you make will carry over so you can pick up where you left off on launch day.

"Unlike demos, which are stand-alone chunks of the game meant to give you a taste but don't provide the full experience, when you play a trial through EA Access, you're playing the real game for a limited time, five days before the release date," it continues. "If you buy the game once it releases, you don't need to download or install anything; you can just pick up where you left off and keep playing."

The first games that will receive EA Access trials are FIFA 15, Madden NFL 15, NHL 15, NBA LIVE 15 and Dragon Age: Inquisition, available later this year. A side observation: EA's insistence that Access trials aren't the same thing as demos suggests that you'll still be able to play demos of EA games, even if you don't sign up for Access. I'll be sure to ask about that, when I next rub shoulders with an executive.

Speaking to CVG, EA's Peter Moore has also promised that "the Vault will get its share of triple-A titles", adding that "we haven't made any announcements to that extent about exactly when, where and how, but the Vault will be substantial".

"New game additions will be determined by franchise and timing," he continued. "We have to make decisions along that way, so there's no template, like 30 days after a game ships it goes into the Vault. I think one of the key things is that once a game goes into the Vault it stays there, it's not going to be taken out, that's a commitment we've made."

I continue to have reservations about EA Access, but on the whole I think it's a good move. What's your mileage?

Microsoft is launching an Xbox One add-on in Europe this fall, the Digital TV Tuner, that will allow Xbox One owners to use the console's TV features with over-the-air broadcast TV, the company announced today.

Currently, the Xbox One can interface with cable or satellite set-top boxes via HDMI pass-through. The Digital TV Tuner will allow the console to support the free DVB-T, DVB-T2 and DVB-C broadcast standards. Customers plug a coaxial cable from their antenna into the device, which tunes and decodes the signal, then sends it to the Xbox One over USB.

Owners of the Digital TV Tuner will be able to watch and pause live TV on the Xbox One, although the unit won't offer full DVR functionality for scheduling recordings of particular shows. The tuner will support the OneGuide for TV listings on both the Xbox One and its SmartGlass app, as well as video on demand options, Snap mode and Kinect voice control.

The Xbox One Digital TV tuner is set to be available this October in France, Germany, Italy and Spain for €29.99 and in the U.K. for ₤24.99.

Reached for comment regarding plans for a release in North America, a Microsoft representative provided Polygon with the following statement, which suggests that the Digital TV Tuner won't be available stateside anytime soon:

"Over-the-air television reception varies region to region. A good experience may rely on antennas that not all households have. Consequently, it is more difficult to provide an out-of-the-box consumer solution for over-the-air TV in the U.S. compared to other markets around the world. We will continue to evaluate new technologies and future opportunities to bring over-the-air digital TV to Xbox One in other markets."

Here's a first look at Kevin Durant in NBA 2K15

The first gameplay footage of NBA 2K15 arrived today, but it didn't come initially from publisher 2K Sports — Kevin Durant, the game's cover athlete and 2013-14 NBA Most Valuable Player, debuted the clip on Instagram.
It's a smart bit of marketing from 2K Sports: Durant boasts nearly 3.4 million Instagram followers, and more than 7.8 million Twitter followers. The video contains maybe 10 seconds of footage from the PlayStation 4 version of NBA 2K15. Durant drives to the basket and dunks on Andre Iguodala of the Golden State Warriors.According to 2K Sports representatives, the footage offers a sneak peek at a variety of improvements in visuals and animation for NBA 2K15. Better-looking sweat, muscle tone and armpit hair can be seen on the player models, along with athlete-specific details like Durant's KD 7 sneakers from Nike. If you look in the background, you may notice furry mascots on the court and fans in the seats holding up Big Heads.

NBA 2K15 is set for release Oct. 7 on PS4, Xbox One and Windows PC, as well as PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Mass Effect Creator Leaves BioWare

By Cassidee Moser

After nearly 16 years of development, Mass Effect Creative Director Casey Hudson has officially left BioWare.

"After what already feels like a lifetime of extraordinary experiences, I have decided to hit the reset button and move on from BioWare. I’ll take a much needed break, get perspective on what I really want to do with the next phase of my life, and eventually, take on a new set of challenges," he wrote in a letter shared with his colleagues. “This is without a doubt the most difficult decision of my career.”

Casey has worked on several game series during his time with BioWare, including Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and the Mass Effect trilogy. While speaking with colleagues, he spoke of his confidence in both the future of Mass Effect and Dragon Age, saying that the next Mass Effect game is one he believes will “redefine interactive entertainment.”

“Development for the next Mass Effect game is well underway, with stunning assets and playable builds that prove the team is ready to deliver the best Mass Effect experience to date,” he says. “And the Dragon Age: Inquisition team is putting the final touches on a truly ambitious title with some of the most beautiful visuals I’ve seen in a game.”

BioWare shared their appreciation for Hudson via Twitter. “We thank @CaseyDHudson for his many contributions to BioWare & our fans. We wish him the best on his next adventure!”

BioWare Studio General Manager Aaryn Flynn also commented on Hudson’s departure, praising his work on the Mass Effect trilogy. “Casey’s focus on production quality, digital acting technology, and emotionally engaging narrative has made a substantial impact on BioWare and the video game industry as a whole.” Flynn said in the company’s blog. “As we say a fond farewell, I know I speak on behalf of the entire studio when I say that we will be forever grateful for Casey’s hard work, passion, and everything he has taught us over the years – a methodical dedication to quality, a spirit of teamwork and camaraderie, and putting fans above everything else.”

Endings sucked but overall the decisions you made didn't really matter. That was my biggest Mass Effect issue.
