Sony Santa Monica, the studio best known for its work on the God of War series, has suffered layoffs today. Sony representatives confirmed the dismissals with IGN, citing "resource re-alignment against priority growth areas" within Sony Worldwide Studios as the cause. The statement reads:

"SCEA can confirm that we have completed a reduction in workforce at Santa Monica Studio. This is a result of a cycle of resource re-alignment against priority growth areas within SCE WWS. We do not take these decisions lightly. However, sometimes it is necessary to make changes to better serve the future projects of the studio. We have offered outplacement services and severance packages to ease transition for those impacted."

Sony Santa Monica most recently shipped God of War: Ascension. Currently, the studios is working on three collaborations due to launch this year: Hohokum with Honeyslug; The Order: 1886 with Ready at Dawn; and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture with The Chinese Room. It's currently unclear how these layoffs will affect ongoing projects, so we've contacted Sony for clarification. We wish the best of luck to those affected.

I wish they would've released this game earlier(early feb)

Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare - Launch Trailer

If the only way you can defend a game is to

A. Immediately dog the competition (in this case Titanfall)

or

B. State that you don't expect innovation anymore in a shooter

That means that something is really wrong with it.

But hey... At least the Order can bore us all to death in Native 1080p, right?...

But hey... At least the Order can bore us all to death in Native 1080p, right?...

 and I hope that was just an extremely rough draft because I like original games. Was looking forward to having something to play when I eventually get a PS4. So I'm silently rooting for it even though I think no co-op was a huge miss.

Did somebody say desperate?..

Last I checked 1886 was being flaunted as a Killer App that was crushing everything this year. But, these trolling ass niggas are bringing up boring ass launch titles for comparison now?.. lol...

This is what happens when you're sitting on Billions  :itsawrap:

Microsoft Hiring Ex-Sony Santa Monica Staff

As reported earlier, Sony Santa Monica has been hit by significant staff lay-offs, and there are reports that a project has been cancelled in the process. It's come to light that Microsoft are now hiring said ex-staff.

The news has received overwhelmingly positive feedback, which could be exactly what Microsoft need right now considering the recent price drop.

Phil Spencer was asked on Twitter:

"With IG closing SSM lay offs, MS should be able to scoop up a lot of talent for BT and new studios, don't you agree, Phil? #helpDEVS"

To which he replied:

"Like the #helpDEVS tag. Keep that one going. We've reached out and are engaged in hiring."

Hopefully those developers that were let go by Sony Santa Monica over the last couple of days manage find new jobs, be they at Microsoft or elsewhere.

Good move. Some of the Irrational games guys will probable work for Black tusk. They should also send the Santa Monica guys to Lionhead or 343.

Can't wait for the comedy from the Wolfenstein article about there being no resolution/fps difference between the systems. Been a good week for Microsoft.

Titanfall might get a DLC season pass, pilot-only mode could come after launch

Respawn says original statement about season pass was an error; "We'll see what happens after launch," community manager says about pilots vs. pilots mode.

Tonight during a special Microsoft Store event in Connecticut, Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment explained that the upcoming game could get a DLC season pass and teased that a pilot-only mode may come sometime after launch.

Respawn community manager Abbie Heppe said cofounder Vince Zampella's tweet this week about the game not having a season pass was a mistake. She clarified tonight that the game won't have an online pass, but said the company has nothing to announce--at least right now--regarding a season pass. Electronic Arts did away with online passes last year.

A tweet from the official Titanfall Twitter account apologizes for the confusion.

The season pass would presumably include access to various Titanfall DLC packs at a discounted rate compared to buying them individually. Though Respawn has yet to announce firm plans for post-release support for Titanfall, the developer said previously that DLC for the game was in the planning stages. Titanfall is a major multiplayer shooter, so significant add-on content should be expected.

Also during the special event tonight at the Westfarms Mall in West Hartford, Conn. Heppe said though a pilot-only multiplayer mode for Titanfall won't be available at release, "we'll see what happens after launch." The chief intrigue of Titanfall is its pilots vs. mechs gameplay, so a pilots-only mode would be a surprise.

Titanfall launches March 11 for Xbox One and PC, with an Xbox 360 version--developed externally at Bluepoint Games--to follow on March 25. Microsoft is throwing a huge party in Texas to mark the game's release.

The forums are in full damage control mode. Guerrilla games got some explaining to do.

We can finale talk about games again.

<header class="lea">THE RED DRAGON

Xbox One March update adds Dolby Digital optical audio support

The March system update for the Xbox One will allow the console to output Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound over an optical audio cable via bitstream, Polygon can report.

The Xbox One launched without support for Dolby Digital, one of the most ubiquitous surround-sound audio standards. Right now, the system can only output DTS Digital Surround, or uncompressed stereo, 5.1 or 7.1 audio, over HDMI; if you're using an optical cable, the console currently supports uncompressed stereo or 5.1 sound.

Albert Penello, director of product planning for Microsoft's Xbox division, said one day before the Xbox One launch last November that Dolby Digital support wouldn't be ready in time for launch because of a "[software] scheduling issue," and confirmed that Microsoft would add the feature eventually. "I know people are disappointed, but we will have it."

Adding support for Dolby Digital audio output should instantly make the Xbox One compatible with a range of surround-sound headsets from third-party manufacturers such as Astro Gaming and Turtle Beach. We tested a beta version of the March update with some movies over a wired Astro A40 headset, and were able to get Dolby Digital 5.1 sound from the console to our ears. You can see an image of the new Xbox One audio settings to the right.

Microsoft is scheduled to release the Xbox One's March update before the March 11 launch of Titanfall. The company announced earlier this month that the system update will improve the console's suite of multiplayer features, such as game invites, party chat and the friends list interface. You can see the new elements in action in a walkthrough video that Microsoft released this week.
