Phantom Dust reboot studio reportedly shuts down, game still in the works

The Xbox One reboot of cult hit Phantom Dust may have hit a worrying snag in development. According to a report from Kotaku, the game's original developer, Sunrise, Florida-based Darkside Game Studios, is no more.

Microsoft canceled Darkside Game Studios' version of Phantom Dust, Kotaku reports, seemingly leading to the studio's closure. We've contacted the studio for details on its status.

According to a statement from a Microsoft spokesperson and executives on Twitter, Phantom Dust is still in development for Xbox One. Head of marketing for Xbox Aaron Greenberg says development on the new Phantom Dust is moving "full steam ahead," though he did not specify who is overseeing development of the game.

Darkside Game Studios has contributed to a number of titles from publishers like 2K Games, including BioShock 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and Microsoft, including Gears of War: Judgment and Sunset Overdrive.

Microsoft unveiled its new Phantom Dust in the form of a pre-rendered trailer at last year's E3. Microsoft provided few details on the game — it never officially said who was developing it — which is expected to be a reboot of the 2004 Xbox game of the same name. Phantom Dust is a card-based action-strategy game designed by Yukio Futatsugi, who oversaw development of the Panzer Dragoon series on Saturn and Crimson Dragon for Xbox One.

UPDATE: Microsoft has told VideoGamer.com that Lords of the Fallen is "not part of the Ultimate Game Sale" - despite the game being reduced to £7.50 yesterday and developer Deck 13 stating that it was "supposed to be in there".

"'Lord of the Fallen' on Xbox One is not part of the Ultimate Game Sale Feb. 17 – 23," a Microsoft representative said in a statement provided to us this afternoon. "Please visit http://www.xbox.com/en-US/promotions/sales/ultimate-game-sale-xbox-one-deals for the full list of titles available through this week's promotion."

ORIGINAL STORY: Lords of the Fallen "was supposed to be" featured in this week's Xbox Ultimate Games Sale, developer Deck 13 has confirmed after the title mysteriously disappeared from the sale last night.

The action-RPG was reduced to just £7.50 at the launch of yesterday's sale, but was pulled just hours after being discounted, returning to its usual £49.99 selling price.
"Regarding the Xbox Ultimate Game Sale. It was suposed [sic] to be in there," Deck 13 tweeted this morning. "It also seems it was for a few hours and then got pulled. No info yet!"

VideoGamer.com has contacted Microsoft to find out whether the game will return to its discounted price.

The Xbox Ultimate Games Sale launched on Xbox One and Xbox 360 yesterday, offering huge discounts on games like Kinect Sports Rivals, Sniper Elite 3, Watch Dogs and more.

The sale is due to run until next Monday, February 23.

If you're as impatient as me then you'll be hungrily pouring over every snippet of Witcher 3 news you can find. A user of The Witcher 3 forums named Shavod has recently gleaned a hearty slice of fresh details from Q&A's with Polish gaming outlets.

Here are some of the best bits, but be sure to check out Shavod's post here for the full breakdown.

• There are various weapon types, some of which can only be used at higher levels. The Witcher 1 also featured various weapon types, but they were all useless compared to swords, as they wouldn't allow stances. Remains to be seen if this continues to be the case.

• Those weapons have a durability rating, which will require return trips to a craftsman in order to prevent them from breaking/going dull.

• The skill tree is reportedly massive, containing 5 trees - each of those containing 5 tiers, with each tier containing 5 skills. It will be impossible to unlock everything, so choosing proper builds will be paramount.

• Unlocked skills can be equipped, enabling players to prepare for fights based on monster research and so on. An example given is an upgraded Igni spell, which allows you to melt the armour of defensive opponents - although Shavod notes his interpretation on this might be incorrect with regards to equipping skill effects.

• There are 4 slots for mutagens, which affect your abilities in a similar way to previous games.

• Temporary companions will join and fight for you, and have superior A.I. One example given is a rogue type character, who waits for mobs to attack Geralt so she can land backstabs.

• The game is designed to be difficult, and even on Easy mode you can die if you're not careful.

• Enemy A.I. is reportedly impressive. They will utilize team work, blocking escape routes, and will avoid traps if placed in plain sight.

• As seen in The Witcher 1, there will be day and night cycles with a wide range of dynamic weather. Different sorts of rain, snow, and early morning mist are amongst those reported.

• NPC models and building interiors are diverse, to prevent that 'de ja vu' effect. The Witcher 1 was particularly guilty of this, I think there was only like 5 NPC models in the entire game.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt launches on May 19th following multiple delays, and, truly looks as though it could be GOTY material. Check out the most recent gameplay footage if you're unfamiliar, I think I'll watch it for the hundredth time as well:

Earlier this month, we added a host of new features and improvements on Xbox One and starting today, members of the Xbox One preview program will get to check out even more new features – some of which are planned for the March system update.

Screenshots – While playing a game, you can now take screenshots on your Xbox One console by simply double-tapping the Xbox button on your controller to capture a screenshot and pressing Y to save the screenshot. If your Xbox One is equipped with a Kinect, you can also say “Xbox Take a Screenshot” to take and save a screenshot.

Upload App – The Upload app is being updated so that you can manage your screenshots in addition to your game clips. You can use a screenshot as your background, by viewing the screenshot in full-screen mode from the Upload app, then, press the Menu button and select Set as background.
Suggested friends – With the suggested friends feature, the Friends area in home and your friends list will help you find and add friends. limbo is a fun little platformer for $4...I played the demo when it 1st dropped (PS3) but for w/e reason I never bought it...very simple but the score and the look creates a very tense atmosphere...I heard it's real short (2 hours) I think...maybe that's why I didn't pick it up even @ $10...for $4 tho I def can't complain

Batman: Arkham Knight has earned an "M for Mature" rating from the ESRB, according to Rocksteady.

The studio's previous Batman games, Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, both earned "T for Teen" ratings. Sefton Hill, founder of Rocksteady and game director on Arkham Knight, said the M rating surprised him because the team didn't specifically aim for it.

"From our point of view, we never wrote it or made it with a rating in mind. We never did that in the previous two games... We just felt that this is the story that we really wanted to tell."

Hill said Rocksteady is aware that some younger players might miss out on the game because of the rating, but that making the game more "mass market" would have been harmful to the story they want to tell.

"I'm not blind to the fact that [the M rating] does mean some fans will miss out... I don't want to be oblivious to that fact. It would have been wrong to water down the game and deliver a story we didn't believe in to keep the game 'mass market' or enable it for more people. We feel that's the wrong way to go about it. We said we love the story and we don't want to jepoardize that."
