Officials should have been more forthcoming on investigation into woman’s death after vaccination
By
Roger Chesley
-
March 12, 2021

Virginia Health Commissioner Dr. Norman Oliver assured me this week that the death of Drene Keyes of Gloucester, just a few hours after she got a COVID-19 vaccination, was properly investigated by the state — even if there wasn’t a full autopsy.

“When a medical examiner takes on a case, it’s not an autopsy versus nothing,” he cautioned.

Oliver’s explanation would’ve been better received had it come sooner. The various statements emanating from the Virginia Department of Health since Keyes’ death on Jan. 30 have allowed fear and mistrust to fester about the state’s vaccination program.

Some suspicion about the vaccines is understandable, if unwarranted. Relatively few complications have been reported nationwide or in the commonwealth given the millions of folks who have received the injections.

So why has the state bungled the explanation of what happened to Keyes? Were officials too invested in a reassuring spin instead of telling Virginians just the facts?

An assistant medical examiner physically examined Keyes’ body, Oliver told me, at an agency office following the death of the 58-year-old woman. In the “rare cases” someone has died from the vaccine, he said, it’s been due to anaphylaxis, which is a severe allergic reaction.

The office tested for an enzyme called tryptase, whose levels become markedly higher if anaphylaxis has occurred. Bloodwork was sent off; the tryptase levels were near normal.

The state eventually determined Keyes, a minister, died of complications of COVID-19 — Oliver wasn’t sure if Keyes knew she had it — and hypertensive cardiovascular disease. Previous reporting also noted she was obese and diabetic.

Oliver and other state officials should’ve relayed what they knew sooner. You don’t have to be a conspiracy theorist to question why the state declined to look at Keyes’ internal organs through an autopsy, as her relatives had requested and eventually carried out themselves.

We’re not all doctors. We don’t know the usual procedures in cases like this.

I wondered whether the state had taken a “head-in-the-sand” approach, as if it feared an autopsy might uncover a possible link between the vaccine and the woman’s death. You can acknowledge the vaccine is generally safe, yet in extremely unique circumstances could result in tragedy.

Keyes got the first dose of the Pfizer-Biontech vaccine in the town of Warsaw. Health-care providers observed her for 15-20 minutes, but then she had trouble breathing and vomited. A medic gave her epinephrine shots in her leg and arm and medicine through an oxygen mask, The Virginian-Pilot reported. She was taken to VCU Tappahannock Hospital, where she died. The state and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control said they were investigating.

“They’re looking for patterns, they’re looking for a causation versus just a correlation based on time,” Dr. Danny Avula, Virginia’s vaccine coordinator, said within days of the incident.

A more recent article, however, indicated how the state revised its explanations. Oliver told public information officers in an email Feb. 5 that if reporters asked whether an autopsy was done, they should say “a full autopsy was not needed in order to ascertain whether the death was related to the vaccination,” The Pilot reported.

Oliver later told The Pilot he misspoke in the email. He said the preliminary findings didn’t indicate Keyes had anaphylaxis, which he also told me.

“You don’t need to do a full autopsy to tell if someone has had an anaphylaxis reaction,” he said this week.

But as The Pilot noted, a public records request it filed also discovered state officials were concerned that the death of Keyes, who is Black, could make it tougher to vaccinate minorities who already were hesitant.

Her relatives eventually sought a private autopsy. Her daughter, Lisa Jones, told me by email Thursday that their preliminary autopsy results were negative for COVID, but final results won’t be available for a few weeks. She declined a longer interview.

This latest explanation by the state won’t eliminate the second-guessing and reluctance, among some people at least, about taking the federally approved vaccines. Yet the vast and overwhelming majority of Americans who have gotten the shots haven’t suffered serious side effects, according to U.S. health officials and news accounts.

The Washington Post reported Wednesday that more than 62 million people have so far received one or both doses of the vaccines in the United States, and that nearly 10 percent of the population has been fully vaccinated. More than 1.6 million people in Virginia have received at least one dose, including more than 916,000 who are fully vaccinated, the state Health Department said.

Around 1,000 people have died nationwide after getting a vaccine, according to Newsweek and other reports. That doesn’t mean, though, that the vaccine caused the death. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that serious reactions to the injections are reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System.

And even then, 1,000 is a small percentage of 62 million.

A state Health Department spokesperson told me that, as of Feb. 26, 535 reports of an “adverse event” after a COVID-19 vaccination in Virginia had been filed with VAERS. Of that total, 26 included deaths. The spokesperson also said there’s no time limit between getting the vaccine and reporting the event to VAERS.

The CDC adds: “To date, VAERS has not detected patterns in cause of death that would indicate a safety problem with COVID-19 vaccines.”

A majority of Black Americans, 61 percent, now say they plan to get a COVID-19 vaccine or already have received one, up from 42 percent who said they planned to get vaccinated in November, according to a Pew Research survey released last week.

All of this means state officials, following the death of Drene Keyes, caused more alarm and suspicion than necessary. The incident should be a teachable moment, for the Health Department and Virginians alike.

Investigation after Spanish woman dies from brain haemorrhage after receiving AstraZeneca vaccine

The woman who died was a 43 year old maths teacher

Spanish authorities launched an investigation on Wednesday after a woman died from a brain haemorrhage after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine against Covid-19.
The 43-year-old mathematics teacher was vaccinated on March 3 but hours afterwards she started to feel ill and went to hospital.

She complained of headaches but doctors attributed this to the normal side effects associated with the vaccine, reported Diario Sur, a Spanish newspaper.
The woman returned to the hospital in Marbella in southern Spain on March 13 but specialists did not detect any serious problem.

Four hours later, a scan revealed fluid accumulationon the brain and she had to be operated on immediately.

The mother-of two, who has not been named, died shortly afterwards on Tuesday.

The woman, who worked at a school in Marbella, tested negative for Covid-19 and had no previous health problems, health authorities said.

The Spanish health ministry has reported the case to the European Medicines Agency.
Three cases of thrombosis in people who have received the AstraZeneca vaccine, including the teacher who died, have been reported in Spain.
Along with a growing series of European countries, Spain decided on Monday to suspend the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine for two weeks after reports of cases of thrombosis.
María Jesus Lamas, the director of the Spanish Medicines Agency, said the teacher’s case was the first known case of cerebralvenous thrombosis in a vaccinated person.
“There are few cases, 11 at the moment around the world and 17 million AstraZeneca vaccine doses have been administered,” Ms Lamas stressed at a press conference.

The European Medicines Agency will meet on Thursday to conduct a scientific analysis into the latest reported side effects from theAstraZeneca vaccine.
Experts will try to determine if there is a direct relationship between the dose and these serious and undetected effects in the development of the vaccine.
The Junta de Andalucia, the regional government which covers Marbella, issued a statement on Wednesday in which it said that the teacher’s case involved a thrombosis that “by itself though infrequent can occur in the general population”.
It added: “In this case it has the particular nature that thrombotic events have been associated with a decrease in the number ofplatelets in the blood.”
Several European countries including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Norway and Sweden have suspended the roll out of the vaccine.

The Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday, March 17, sought to ease peoples concerns over the death of a health worker who recently got a jab against COVID-19
saying the person died because of the coronavirus disease itself, and not due to vaccination.
The DOH said in a joint statement with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that "an individual" who got vaccinated died on March 15, prompting an investigation with the regional and national committees on Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI).
The DOH confirmed to media that the individual was a health worker.
"Upon completion of the investigation following the 2019 WHO AEFI causality assessment methodology, the NAEFIC and RAEFIC concluded that the cause of the death was caused by COVID-19 itself, not by the COVID-19 vaccine," the DOH and FDA said.
"COVID-19 vaccines cannot cause COVID-19," they added.
The DOH and the FDA stressed that "vaccines are only one part of the solution in bringing the COVID-19 pandemic to an end."
"Even with vaccines, people must continue with the important prevention measures already in place: wearing masks, maintaining physical distancing, washing hands frequently, and avoiding crowded places and settings," they said.
The DOH and the DFA also urged health workers and other Filipinos to get vaccinated especially amid the "surge in COVID-19 cases" and reiterated that the benefits of getting the vaccine outweight the risks.

"Millions of people around the world have received this vaccine, and evidence continues to show that the benefit of vaccination outweighs the risk of severe disease and death caused by COVID-19," they said. (READ: 'Benefits outweigh risks': PH to continue AstraZeneca jabs amid concerns in Europe)
Scientists have said that getting infected with COVID-19 remains a possibility even after receiving doses of the vaccine.
According to the US Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC), it typically takes a "few weeks for the body to build immunity (protection against the virus that causes COVID-19) after vaccination."
"That means it's possible a person could be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 just before or just after vaccination and still get sick. This is because the vaccine has not had enough time to provide protection," the CDC said.

What is the coincidental death count so far?

I'm reluctant to take the vaccine myself but you may as well be dropping articles about plane crashes.

The VA called me last week to see if I wanted to take the jab, but I have my annual physical in May so I told them I'd probably consider it then.

Mississippi is the second state to open up vaccines for all residents 16 and up. Here's what other states are doing

(CNN)With Covid-19 vaccination production and distribution ramping up in the United States, more states are expanding who is eligible to be inoculated.
On Tuesday, Mississippi is following Alaska's lead and becoming the second state to open vaccination appointments to all residents 16 years and older, Gov. Tate Reeves said Monday.
"Starting tomorrow, ALL new appointments will be open to ALL Mississippians. Get your shot friends - and let's get back to normal!" he tweeted Monday.
Officials are racing to get Americans vaccinated and manage the pandemic before variants can dominate the cases spreading around the country.

President Joe Biden has called for all American adults to be eligible for vaccines by May 1, but some are planning to expand who can be inoculated earlier.
Here is where each state stands:
Alabama
Beginning March 22, all residents 55 and older, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, critical workers and people with high-risk medical conditions will be added to eligible for vaccinations, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health.
Alaska
On March 9, Alaska became the first state to eliminate all other eligibility requirements. Everyone living and working in the state is now eligible for vaccination, Gov. Mike Dunleavy said.
Arizona
All residents 45 and older will be able to be vaccinated beginning April 1, Gov. Doug Ducey told CNN affiliate KPNX. For now, eligibility ranges by county according to the Arizona Department of Health Services.
Arkansas
As of Tuesday, groups in Phase 1C of Arkansas' vaccine rollout plan -- which includes people ages 16-64 with some underlying health conditions, people who live in high-risk settings and essential workers in a range of industries -- can receive vaccines, Gov. Asa Hutchinson said.
California
The state expanded vaccine eligibility Monday to include adults in congregate facilities, including immigrants in detention centers, as well as those with certain health conditions.
Colorado
Colorado will add 2.5 million more people eligible for vaccines Friday by expanding access to residents 50 and older as well as those with high-risk conditions, Gov. Jared Polis said.
Connecticut
On Friday, appointments for vaccinations will open to residents ages 45 to 54, and by April 5, the state expects to expand to all of those 16 and older, a press release from Gov. Ned Lamont's office said Monday.
Delaware
While the state is pushing to vaccinate residents 65 and older as well as frontline essential workers, pharmacies can vaccinate anyone in the state 50 or older and doctors can vaccinate anyone with high or moderate-risk medical conditions, according to a statement Tuesday.

Off the strength and just being generous, now mind you this is just being generous.Since the rollout back in December,2020 til now March,2021,you also have to include adverse reactions as well, those have to be counted to,because they can go from minor to severe.Minor meaning like headaches for days, soreness at the spot of the arm, nausea, vomitting.Severe meaning facial paralysis, liver problems(possibly needing a liver transplant),lungs, kidneys, and the heart with the valves around it.those are your severe ones. Then the last but definitely not least Death itself.Imma say at least 15,000 and still climbing and thats just being generous. You totally have to disregard what VAERS is reporting.Remember the Vaccine has to look good even if you drop dead.remember this meme when you die after taking the vaccine you die of everything but the vaccine.let that sink in.

Fauci says military members who opt out of Covid vaccine are inadvertently ‘part of the problem’
PUBLISHED THU, MAR 4 20217:41 PM ESTUPDATED THU, MAR 4 20218:14 PM EST

Amanda Macias@AMANDA_M_MACIAS

WASHINGTON – White House Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said Thursday that U.S. service members who are eligible to get the Covid-19 vaccine but opt out are inadvertently “part of the problem” of lengthening the pandemic.

“You’re part of the solution to this outbreak,” explained Fauci to a virtual audience during a town hall with Blue Star Families, a non-profit dedicated to issues facing military families.

“Because by getting infected, even though you may not know it, you may be inadvertently transmitting the infection to someone else, even though you have no symptoms,” Fauci said. “In reality, like it or not, you’re propagating this outbreak. So instead of being part of the solution, you are innocently and inadvertently being part of the problem by not getting vaccinated.”

“You’ve got to think of your own health, which is really very important, but you got to think about your societal obligation, including people close to you personally as well as other members of families of other individuals,” Fauci said.

Last month, the Pentagon acknowledged that about one-third of U.S. military service members declined to take the voluntary coronavirus vaccine.

When asked if military leadership were disappointed with the revelation, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters last month that the decision to take the vaccine was ultimately up to each member of the force.

“Everybody is different and we want — what the secretary wants — is for the men and women of the department to make the best and most informed decision for them and for their health and the health of their families,” Kirby said, adding that Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin did get the vaccine.
Meanwhile, the military’s U.S. Northern Command, which is responsible for the Pentagon’s coronavirus efforts, has tasked thousands of service members to help vaccinate communities across the nation.

Last week, Austin embarked on his first official trip since ascending to the top spot at the Pentagon to meet with military commanders overseeing the Covid-19 response effort in California.

Austin also visited a FEMA vaccination center in Los Angeles, the first staffed by both active-duty military teams as well as National Guard personnel.

Austin said the Pentagon has prioritized getting factual information out to the force in order to bolster confidence.

“There’s a degree of mistrust and I think we have to collectively work hard to dispel rumors and to provide facts to people,” Austin told reporters traveling with him. “And it’s been my experience that when armed with the facts, people will tend to make the right decisions.”

“My counsel to everyone is, I mean, this saves lives. And it’s not just about saving our life, it’s about saving our partner’s life, our neighbor’s life, and in the military, you know, we thrive on teamwork and we have to think about our teammates, as well,” he added.

The military has never been able to "opt-out" of any such thing. From Small Pox and Anthrax to Influenza, those Commands have always demanded 100% participation from the top down. Whether those at the top were taking those inoculations (which I doubt) is another story.

They will be ORDERED to take it under the guise of "Readiness." Remember that Navy Captain who was relieved of duty because his ship was overrun with COVID cases and he wanted to take care of his sailors. The military will force the issue. Iono WHAT Fauci's on. :dunno::smh:

but you may as well be dropping articles about plane crashes.Bruh i know you didnt.Bruh i can turn it up now if you really wanna know .Because really in all ,deaths that happen after January 2021 can really be attributed to the vaccine. The vaccine is here now weather FDA approved it or not ,it does not matter.Think about it bruh we in March 2021 now.So really in all any deaths that occur after December,2020 is on the time watch of the vaccine. You cant go back to Covid19/coronavirus any more like they use to.So you think you gonna go through 2021 without bodies dropping in the masses just because you have the vaccine,?You got to be out of your brains. The fun part hadnt even started yet.It aint even no where near turned as its gonna get.Because they can easily blame that on new virus variants(aint we hearing that in the news now.?).Bruh just back and go to your nearest microwave and pop your popcorn and fold your arms back and get ready.a lot of stuff is going to happen with the vaccine.

I dont know where you get your info from. You are delusional at best if you think the military are force to take that Under EUA you must dont wont the US mainland to have a military Because they can get sued out of there last red penny under EUA, pending if they dont take the vaccine, once you take the vaccine then you cant sue them your argument is moot. That was a big lie that was told to you. There is nothing mandatory under EUA.Why you think they know what they know. why you think they opting out.? because they know they dont have to under EUA.

I'm speaking from a military background Jes. I retired in 2015. I'm bringing you first-hand experience. If you're in the Uniformed Services YOU WILL be gettin' that shot!

Military members cannot sue the government. To rectify any such issues that you have must be filed through a VA claim. Think back to the Gulf War Syndrome and how the military denied for the longest that soldiers who handled depleted uranium got sick and the Pentagon denied any responsibility for years. Same thing with Agent Orange. You'll get a disability rating and compensated accordingly.

I've gone on Leave on two separate occasions and came back AFTER flu season had subsided and had a shot waiting on me...just for the Battalion obtaining 100% compliance.

While you're in the military, you surrender a lot of rights, and the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) falls right into the state of readiness and preparedness OF the military. In fact, it's DUE to the EUA that the military cannot opt-out BECAUSE it's an emergency and they must be ready to react to whatever threats.
