Why people in low-income areas choose Cheetos over fresh vegetables

C/S They just don't know any better. I'll tell you another thing. The recession has hit me. My grocery budget doesn't get me near as much as it used to. So you know what I did? I planted me a little raised bed garden. You know why? because my grandmother used to have me out there on my hands and knees helping her with hers, so it was just in me.

These are some early shots from about 2 months ago. Greens, tomatos, cucumbers, carrots, banana and bell peppers. got some onions down on the other end. Watermelon. It doesn't produce as much as I want, but I'm still learning and I know what I did wrong so next year will be better. Thats why I started small. Theres some kids on the block that would come tear up my plants, play in my dirt. I didn't get mad, I made them help me replant that shit and gave them their own little section to grow their own stuff. They've been good about it too, well as good as 7-8 year olds can be I guess. They like to get dirty anyway, so win-win I say.

Just think if everybody in the projects started making community gardens. all that unused dirt and young labor just being wasted. The new trend down here is teaching them how to do it at school. Damn near all the elementary schools around here have some sort of garden, and the kids get to eat what they grow. At the upper levels, junior high I mean, some of them have been given permission to use unused lots to grow big ass gardens. They do a good job too.

Theres a guy I know, a farmer, who goes around to the corner stores in the hood and sells the storeowners fruits and veggies really cheap. Just enough to fill a few baskets by the register. He takes a loss so these kids will have some better, more affordable healthy choices to fuckin hot chips. They rarely buy the shit though.

I dunno, you can't save everybody i guess.
Good shit. We bought a house in FL, had a big yard with orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit and a big ass avocado tree. Before we moved here, my inlaws planted pineapple, guava, pigeon peas (gandules) another avocado, fig, kiwi and peppers....Garening is the shit, but it takes time and patience.

It's comes down to one simple fact..."some people just don't know any better". It's not an excuse, it's just reality. In my house, all we drink is water. That's all my daughter will drink. Some people have not been educated by their caretakers as to what foods and beverages are best for their health.

Tell me about it. Last night at Walmart, my wife and I saw a lady deciding what to keep since she only had but so much on her EBT card. It came down to Cream of Wheat/Peanut Butter vs a bunch of Raisinets. Guess which one won.

^This is the WHOLE reason I made the thread fam:smh:

This is informative, yet very common practice. In alot of low income neighborhoods, the residents do not have transportation and the stores that are local to those areas, have low quality food. It's even the same for alcohol and what not. Stores in the burbs rarely have malt liquor. Stores in the hood rarely have natural drinks like say Naked Juice.

It's a shame but the key word is LOW INCOME areas, Cheetos are cheaper and more available than fresh vegetables.

Cheetos are cheaper and more available than fresh vegetables. Seriously? I hate studies like this the results are always slanted with demeaning findings towards lower income areas. Stop falling for the okey doke. If obesity only existed in low income urban areas obesity wouldn't be an issue.

Low income has little to do with this. White people in white suburban areas are obese too. I would love to see them explain that factor also.

Its more about people don't want to cook anymore so they buy foods kids can snack on, even prepare themselves. Parents have gotten lazy. Even when shopping parents are making poor choices on their purchases.

Kids will eat fruits if you have them available. That's not to say they won't still grab a handful of cookies but it really depends on how you raise your kids and your efforts in preparing healthy meals for your family.

my dinner consists of frozen veggies (peas, corn and carrots from freezer) cooked in veggiestock for 5-7 minutes (I rather prefer when it’s not so muddy so I use to cook it in a shorter time) put some mustard and fresh pepper on. READY to eat. I usually take one cup of frozen veggies.

tumblr_lvldvqVw9B1qakev8o1_400.jpg

Krasdale Mixed Vegetables - 9-12oz - $0.99 (

I get 10 for $10.00 and you can fill your freezer with $50.00 worth of different types of frozen veggies......

But ONLY vegatables for dinner!?!
I got to try that.

so it basically from reading ALL the responses a LACK of education and Knowledge?

But I just CANT accept with ALL the info online in print sometimes IN THE STORE ITSELF not including church word of mouth social service agencies commercials etc.

That people REALLY dont know they options?

I don't understand why people still believe eating healthy is expensive:smh:... I guess people don't know their options, but the info is out there. You just have to look...

Frozen vegetables are way healthier than the so called "fresh" ones.

This is how the vegetables get to your store from the farms.

Frozen vegetables are ripened on the plant, they are not picked until they are ripe - therefore they have all the nutrients and vitamins inside them. When picked, they are cut and prepared and flash frozen, locking in all the nutrients and vitamins. Then they are shipped to the stores via trucks - they are frozen at such a cold temperature that it will not damage them in anyway being transported via trucks across the country (and the trucks are refridgerated).

"Fresh" vegetables are picked WAY BEFORE they are ripe - so they don't have all the nutrients in them yet when they are picked. They are packed in crates and put into trucks and shipped across the country - they ripen in the trucks. They are moved, and bumped, etc all through the journey so they can easily get bruised or turn rotten along the way. By the time they get to the stores they have been off the plant for days or weeks (perhaps even longer) and are either still not ripe enough or are now over ripe and have lost most of their nutrients during the trip.

I been hearing about this a lot since iI started doing research...but I have also heard that many OVER COOK vegetables to the point here the lose much of their nutritional value.

So I always wanted to know how is the BEST way to prepare them?

Always slow steam, they loose their nutritional properties when you cook them...

Its so easy....

Went shopping the other day and saw this women who was on food stamps and or wic. She was fat looking unhealthy with four fat children, and in their cart they had nothing but junk food.:smh:
I know there are going to be those who say, so what why give a fuck what the next person is eating, all that is fine and dandy, except when those motherfuckers get sick and have to be hospitalized who is going to foot the bill?
Imagine if you are a hard worker and try to stay fit, all your life, however you suddenly get sick and the doctor tells you the hospital cant help you because you are not properly covered. How will it make you feel that someone who could care less about their health, someone who is most likely to fuck it it up if they ever get better, gets treated while you have to suffer.
Sorry to say but this is the reality for millions of people in this country and in these hard times, people will only put up with so much bullshit.

I understand what you're saying and all, but you are pointing your finger at the wrong people.

1) A lot of those poor people don't know any better (don't know how to shop, cook, take care of themselves, etc etc). And assuming if were referring to poor black people, everything from the food they eat, to the products they put in their hair is fucked up. And the schools don't teach black children shit about taking care of themselves, their parents are just as ignorant as they are, and they cycle just repeats with each generation.

2) Since the 80's this country has allowed corporations to run amuck all for the sake of making a dollar (high fructose corn syrup in EVERYTHING, hormones, steroids, and antibiotics in food, genetically manipulated fruits & veggies, misleading marketing, you name it!). Couple that with kids not playing outside anymore, cig smoking, multiple Republican administrations and there you have your rising health care costs.

3) The health care system is systematically fucked up dude. Start the blame with Nixon and Pat Buchanan, and move on down to each Administration until you get to Obamacare. Profit over People dude.

My overall point is your frustration is misguided. These issues are the result of short sighted decisions that occured YEARS ago for the sake of increased profits and campaign donations... The effects will be felt at least for the next decade.

I finally realized the key to eating fresh without spending a bunch of money: eat what is in season

I recently tried to get some fresh corn and it was like 6bucks for 4 ears. When corn is in season I've seen it for. 49 cents a ear

I have a info graphic on what is in season when and if I remember I will post it here later

You gotta stop thinking of it as "black" and think of it as ignorance. And trust me, they arent watching Dr. OZ or Oprah dude, c'mon lol.

A lot of the time they have absolutely no concept of a better lifestyle because they've never seen or experienced it. If you have no concept of something better, you wont look for information on it. If you have no information on it, you wont practice it.

Aside from that, doing anything that benefits you is typically harder than doing something that doesn't.

- Cooking your own meals rather than eating out = harder
- Buying healthier food is more expensive than buying shit = harder
- Working out everyday is much more work than not = harder

You couple that with single parent, scraping by month to month, living in poverty... shit aint that easy fam. And if you put yourself in their shoes, considering everything I just said, ask yourself:

"WHAT THE FUCK FOR? To be the healthiest person in the shithole? My kids?? I provide a roof over their heads, food, and clothing. It may not be fancy, but its the best I can do... I'm probably not gonna live long here anyway, might as well enjoy what I can while I can..."

It's a generational problem. You educate your kids and make eating healthy the norm when they're young, it will continue into adult-hood. Unfortunately thats not happening right now. Instead theyre getting McDonalds, Newports, Ace of Spades, and Ciroc thrown in their face on a constant basis...

Things really start getting fucked up in junior high and high school. Our school cafeteria was garbage. We had a 7-11 directly across the street, next to a Robin's Donuts and pizza slice spot. Kids lived off of weed, acid tabs, Slurpees, chili cheese fries, and donuts. Others on curly fries, burgers, and chocolate bars. The only kids who were eating right were those PACKING STUFF from home. We used to hoop every lunch hour, so we'd bring our lunches with us to the 2nd and 3rd classes of the day PRE/POST-LUNCH. We were dehydrated as fuck not drinking enough water, but at least we were eating sandwiches, juice, fruit (or veggie slices), and occasionally some junk (chocolate or granola bar, some chips) and exercising. Fucked up watching kids eat Mr. Noodles 5 days a week, polished off with a Slurpee and some other toothrotting shit. Kids from grade school who were formerly lean ... went the other way. Girls' started getting the T&A overload and shit. North American eating habits promote early death, for real.

try woking those veggies in garlic (fresh) infused olive oil.

86 the veggie stock.

oh, and try going organic; at least with the veggies.

Whats wrong with the veggie stock?

Woking frozen veggies? Wouldn't that just make the oil pop like crazy?

Is it REALLY necessary to do organic FROZEN vegetables?

in my hood every morning i see overweight school girls walking to school eating chips or candy, shit is just fucking sad.

some of the most realest shit spoken on dis board and dat ain't juss about food dats about life in general..i got various situations in my life when i learned dis first hand

For the same reasons other people make the same choices. We only have a problem with poor people making that choice because we support them. Everyone's taste buds are not the same and some vegetables and fruits really do taste horrible to some people. Even some of the people that want to eat right can't stand the taste of a lot of healthy food. I'll bet your kids don't even eat school lunch anymore. From the time I was in middle school until I graduated high school we never took lunch to school because we were given at least two choices. Now most kids bring their unhealthy lunches to school anyway and the problem still exists.
