Why do you care how many CDs an artist sells?

Really, why is it important to you?
I have never looked at any artist in my CD collection and said "Damn, I'm glad I bought this because __________ sold hella copies"
I buy the music I like and download music that I know I'm not going to be listening to three months from now. Why is how many CDs an artist sells important to YOU the consumer? I know why its important to the artist but do you really care? Sales are almost directly proportionate to how much hype an artist's label can build for him/her. It has nothing to do with the music itself. I see quite a few threads discussing chart sales and shit like that but why should any of us care unless its our CD? A good record is classic and will stand the test of time so how many records sold shouldn't matter, right? Great sales do not equal great songs.

I like an artist named Jerzee Monet

she had one decent hit with DMX

but she didnt sell any albums

I havent heard from her since

....

albums sells guarantees your favorite artists future
its also a validation of their talents

As a lover of music, I want artists that I like to do well.. hence moving CD's. I helps them get more spins and spins = dividends. They it helps them get more exposure because night spots will pay to bring them to their nevue, which is how they make the bulk of their money...

Folks want their tastes validated by other people.
Thats basically it, so they can say "See I am right, he's good cuz he went platinum" I like alot of music that will probly never go platinum and might not ever be heard outside my area but I dont give a damn. I aint never liked nobody cuz of they sales, it makes me respect them maybe on a business side but thats it. I aint makin money off it so I dont give a fuck

Yeah, I remember her. She had a single called "Most High"

Sales do not validate talent. That is a huge and very widely spread misconception. Example: Cassie.

I don't give a fuck how much an artist sales because more than likely im not contributing to it anyway. Most of the rap artists that I listen to aren't selling anyway.....but if you got a nigga like Game you is talking about going Plat in the first week and all that shit, then yea im gonna see if he really does it..last time I checked the nigga STILL aint went platinum...I wonder what Nas sales look like because he is supposed to be so great and everyone agrees...so why not go buy his damn albulm instead of just saying it and talking down on the niggas who ARE selling. :hmm:

I really don't care honestly

Hell nowadays, I kinda get upset when one of my favorite artists DOES do well in sells

I thought Lupe Fiasco had the BEST hip-hop album this past year but his sales obviously didn't reflect that

But I could see how some, like dude said, want validation by other people or they just simply want their favorite artist(s) to do well.

Some people see a little bit of themselves in their favorite artist just like some people see a little bit of themselves in their favorite sports team.

Huh? Anyone interested in the music industry will naturally want to know whose product is doing well and whose isn't. Doesn't mean you're looking for validation or that you value one artist's sales figures over another's talent. It's just good (and necessary) information for anyone following what's going on in the biz.

Try to step outside your own self-interest (and snobbishness) for a minute and take a look at what people under-20 and over-40 are diggin'. Doesn't mean you have to agree with the masses (though, more often than not, truly great artists do eventually sell and even the lamest top sellers usually have something worth paying attention to, if you have an open mind --- there's always a legit reason, far beyond simple hype, for why every album sells).

I'm riding the fence on this one. I care because i want people to do well but at the same time i don't care because record sales don't make or break a ablum. If it's a good album nothing can change that. I'll listen to a artist even if he sold one copy which was to me if i dig the music. Alot of people just want validation of the artist(s) that they are listening to. That i don't need nor seek.

As a fan i have an interest in what an artist sells because if they don't sell most likley you won't here from them for a long time (wu-tang clan)
