I've said it before and I'll say it again: hip hop died officially for me when I saw this album cover for the first time:
everybody at my school was bumping these mixtapes with TRU on them, totally ignoring mainstream radio hip hop (except for tupac and biggie), then came master p, then came the no limit phenomenon...these record labels saw the trend and followed suit, and here we are today.

As I recall, NY heads were saying Rap died when the West (aka Gangsta Rap) took over in the late 80's - early 90's. Don't you get it? As long as NYC is not regarded as the center of the Hip-Hop universe, it will always be considered dead to them. Period. There's not one region that's been hot since the East fell off that NY heads have conceded kept Hip-Hop alive. Not one. It has never and will never happen.
Until NY artists start topping the charts again and bring back NY style, sound, lingo, fashion and culture... Hip-Hop will be panned as dead. It's a very self-serving, whiny, disingenuous, illogical and baseless cliche' (complaint). Hip-Hop is only dead to the dead themselves.

i think it was about the time puffy (glorizing material aspect with no real skills) made an album and slow rapping Mase came out, bring your time line up about 2 to 3yrs.
then how come when the south starts to get hip hop going the music industry is on the decline???? west coast, east coast mid west (nelly, etc) had hip hop poppin now that the south got it now the culture and everything is dead now huh????

I don't see nothing dead. What I do see is is other regions not stepping up to the standard that the whole south set. Why you think the south been on top longer than any other region and STILL going hard. Only reason NY had the crown for so long was because hip-hop started there.

how is hip-hop dead when krs-one still alive, rakim is still alive, but the south never killed it, we added soul to it, eastcoast just wont accept the fact that we dont care what they think about us, hate us or love us. its like we got to have our sound official when somebody from nyc says its hip hop. we got go to the congress of the 5 boroughs to make official, or get accepted.

maybe when tupac exposed alot of them niggas was actually bitches. or when biggie was killed. maybe it was the first time puffy danced in another artist on his labels video. or when niggas from up north like what the south was doin so they started tryin to do it instead of being themselves. maybe when 50 got strong and caused division with alot of new york niggas. maybe cuz there is hardly anyone that could step in and help nas and jay when new york needed it. shit it was like when kg was stuck in minn with oluwakandi and szcerbiak he carried them on his back to 50 win seasons and the playoffs but there is so much one man can do. either way i don't see how it's the south fault. it's the east coast's fault for not havin any hot shit for niggas to listen too. hey ya'll got some fire r&b singers though

I'm from the South as well.
When I attended college, everyone was bumping that southern shit, and they couldn't stand that I was bumping East Coast. Even though I may have issues with the content of some East Coast hip hop...
...southern hip hop makes my skin crawl. They say listening to certain classical music can temporarily increase your intelligence; Well southern hip hop does the exact opposite to me.

I like that right there. It is so true. I don't see how anyone on BGOL, when we have an abundance of good new hip-hop being dropped here on a regular from all over the map, can say that hip-hop is dead. Stop waiting on Viacom & Clear Channel to deliver you good music.
