Watchmen Drayonis REVIEW (I luv it, U hate it)

That is the truth. I remember as a kid in the late 80's early 90's that the national focus of media was just different than it is today.

Man, I remember when the challenger explosion happened and they showed it in school. So comics and other media (Heavy Metal...etc) books were focused on grim realities of technological and social advances.

Nowadays, shuttles launch and ppl don't blink. Different times but the comic and the movie captured the nuclear fear on the head.

Exactly. I remember growing up in late 70's and early 80's and Nuclear war was on peoples minds like crazy. Superman "quest for peace" where he threw the nukes into the Sun at the end?

How about the movie "The Day After" that showed on television. I remember kids being scared in school the next day because they thought war was coming.

People were still shook from the Vietnam war and Russia was our biggest threat. The movie was based on those fears. I agree with one poster said that they didn't ratchet up the fear of Nuclear war as much as they could have I think that would have driven the point that much further. Like I said in the review I can see how some (maybe most) wouldn't like it. If you are a younger person or not a student of history then you won't really understand some of the relevant points the film was making.

stop reviewing this movie..no one that wasnt an avid reader of the comic liked it...

I have never even touched a Watchmen comic... hell I didn't even know that the comic even existed until the movie hype machine started last year.

But I thoroughly enjoyed the movie! It was a "thinking man's movie" and not an action movie that you can cheer for good vs. evil. None of the characters were truly good or evil per se.

It presented alot questions about "human nature" and the "human condition".

*SPOILER ALERT* Don't read down unless you want to be spoiled.

My favorite line out of the movie was when Dr. Manhatten was chilling on MARS and his girl was bitching about "You don't care for me...blah blah shit" and he responded "I didn't care for you? When you left me.........I left EARTH"

Think about in the context of the regular male/female dynamic. How men communicate different from women.
Think about it.

That was dope. As hell....I thought the same thing. If I had the power of a God I would set out to answer all the questions that have troubled man....I would be traveling the universe and seeing what else it out there...not kicking it with broad with a horrible haircut.

I also liked the line from Rorschach..."I'm not stuck in here with you, YOU'RE stuck in here with me!"

Entertaining movie...plot was bullshit though. There were other ways of reaching the goal without having to kill so many people. Cats should have just sat down all together and just handled they b.i instead of all the behind the back secret chess game shit.

plot holes are a muthafuka, i was thinkin the same thing. now, this man can teleport anything anywhere in the fukin GALAXY, and they gotta go through all this cloak and dagger shit AND blast a city to save the world? why not just THINK about turning every nuke on the planet into a pile of dirty socks and be done with it?

Yup those were some of the "nuances" of the movie I spoke of. When America won Vietnam they were all but too happy to get rid of term restraints for Presidents. This shows how directly the influence of heroes had effected reality.

RIGHT. Third term for Noxon and the fact that Reagan was running was a fuckin joke to them. Dude said nobody wants a cowboy in the whitehouse and the crowd went nuts.

ONE THING THOUGH - at some points I swear they dumbed down the dialogue. Manhattan and Kovacs and even Ozy had bits of dialogue I expected to hear and I DIDNT and when the movie ended with that loud ass campy rock song instead of Smashing Pumpkins I WAS FUCKIN PISSED but... whatever.

Oh yeah, they damn near KILLED THE MYSTERY of the story. Dont spoon feed us, dont over explain the same side plot and give us MORE Rorschach. Oh yeah, and turn the set lights down on Comedians scenes. I am NOT a fanboy, but I came out that theatre wanting MORE.

SPOILERS

1.I even like the ending better.

2.Hack child killer in the head - good.

3.Ozy shoulda been a homo - missed chance, but okay.

4.No squid - no problem.

5.Set up Manhattan - perfect.

6.End the movie on the journal w/ voice over - perfect.

Overall - VERY GOOD FILM. Coulda been better.

The movie sucks period. I hate to be the one to bust your bubble, but the movie fucking suck. The only part that I enjoy was when dude was in prison. They should not have killed the comedian so fast. Also why the hell did most aged and some stay young. Last thing I would like to know is, Why the hell do I have to be a comic head to enjoy a good movie.

Dumbass, the Comedian's murder is what got the whole ball rolling in terms of Rorschach investigating who was killing the "masks". And the comic itself starts with him being dead. and all of the heroes aged, except for Dr. Manhattan. The Comedian was 67 when he was killed, the original Silk Spectre was in her 60's, the original Night Owl was in his 60's. Ozymandias, and the 2nd Night Owl are about the same age, but (not shown in detail) because of his lifelong training regimen and diet, Ozymandias looks younger than he really is. Also, with the exception of Dr. Manhattan, NONE of the characters has ANY super powers.

Excellent review my dude, you covered it to the T...I was suppose to see Madea with my girl, but this movie fit into the timeframe so we saw this instead....Im not a comic book head, so I really got lost, my girl flat out feel asleep snore and all....I kept saying to myself, where the hell is all the action at, then I started noticing people with watchmen shirts, hats; thats when I realized this had to be a novel or comic book...The concept was crazy which kept my interest, but I did find myself bored most of the time, probably because I went in thinking it was going to be batman or something similiar.

And this right here is way most of the hater dislike the movie. You go in expecting "Spiderman", "The X-Men" or "The Fantastic Four", and a got a multi-layered plot without all of the constant action.

It was a Good movie. I watched it about 2 yesterday. As usual Lee Lee Thompkins would not shut da fuck up. I thought I was smart hitting my local theater early. The bad ass kids are still in school at 2 not Lee Lee's loud ass.:smh:

Is there a backstory to the Watchmen? I have never read the comic books. At times I was confused through the movie. It was clear at the end.

I liked the bloody scenes with the matrix like effect. Are there any movies like this bloody with the matrix like effect? The only one I know of is Kill Bill.

In the comic, as far as I remember, they were neve refered to as "The Watchmen". The first crime fighting group was called The Minutemen, and the name for the 2nd, failed group (the one where the Comedian burned the map) was called the Crimebusters. As far as a backstory, all of the "heroes" come from various backgrounds and individually decide to do something about crime. All of the scenes shown during the opening credits gave a little of it.

Huh??? WHAAAAT?????

This Movie Was Garbage!!

if you like looking at a naked Blue Man's penis all through the movie (cause they showed his dick a lot)...then this flick's for you.

had to turn my head away everytime that blue motherfucker was on the screen.

So out of a 3 hour movie, all you remember is the man's dick? FTP alert!!!!!!

I appreciated the visuals and dialogue of the movie but I walked out of that movie before it finished. I went with my 10 year old daughter expecting it to be a blockbuster XMEN type flick - based on the commercials.

It's definitely a movie you have to watch more than 1 time to understand. Also, Watchmen is not for kids way too graphic.

I agree with this. It was marketed like the typical comicbook movie instead of what it really is, a story about people, some of whom wore masks and fought crime.

I saw it Friday night. I never heard of the watchmen before this movie and still enjoyed it immensely. The plot was great and the twist in the end caught me off guard. I honestly wish they could have made it a little longer and explained more. I cant figure out if the watchmen or super strong or if average humans are just stronger in their universe. Do any of them have powers besides Manhattan? The dude that had the pig ears had me like?

By the way everyone who has attended middle school should know what the cold war was. Aside from Nixon getting extra terms everyone should be able to understand the situation our world was in.

Me and a few other comic geeks went together and discussed the movie afterwards, and all said the same thing about the heroes. When they fight non-heroes, bones are broken, bodies are thrown around like rag dolls and necks are snapped and shit, but when they fight each, they do little damage to each other, so it looks like they are super strong & fast. In the comic it is made clear that they have no powers and sustain damage just like everyone else. The 2 exceptions to this are Ozymandias (who thru his genius level intellect and training his body to be one with his mind, has slightly faster reflexes than the others) and Dr. Manhattan.

3.Ozy shoulda been a homo - missed chance, but okay.

There was a shot in the opening credits sequence that depicts Veidt standing in front of The Village People and an entirely gay 1970's crowd. I really don't think they needed to say more than that.

I thought it was a good touch, by the way... more of the movie should have flowed like that sequence.

I agree. They should have slowed down the part when Dr.Manhattan was explaining his history. To me it seemed like they rushed through that. The way his body started to come back together molecule by molecule was one of wildest part from the comic book....

^^^I wasn't an avid reader of the comic and I liked the movie so whats your point?

Drayonis review of the movie is spot on and I wish that more people would approach viewing these types of movies with open and inquiring minds.

I've never been a fan of simplistic movies based on comic books which is why I hated the Ghost Rider and Blade Trinity flicks with a passion.

The Crow (starring the late Brandon Lee) was to me one of the earliest practically true to source material comic book movies of all time followed by Frank Millers Sin City and 300 .

Watchmen as a movie carries on it that fine tradition in my humble opinion.

after having just read the comic today...after seeing the movie yesterday..

I really NOW have a better appreciation for what they accomplished with the film.

I think it was a very good and faithful adaptation.

I just wish they had explained in the movie how Rorscach's mask worked... like they did in the comic. I was in the movie like "how does this dudes mask keep moving like that"...

I like the change that they made into the movie as to how went about his "super plan" ...

fuck all the haters... the movie did a good job of bringing all the material together..yes the movie was long...but it needed to be...and it had the pacing of the graphic novel.

Cool, thanks.

Remember, there are a lot of people here who are Gucci Mane and Lil Wayne fans.

So when people say Watchmen Suck, it doesn't really hold any water here lol.

hey, imma gucci mane & wayne fan & this sounds like it's my type of movie! fight scenes & explosions really don't thrill me like they used to:rolleyes:... like dude said, i hope this succeeds so it would make hollywood put more heart & thought into the superhero genre....

Exactly. Hollywood doesn't take chances. They butcher comic films left and right just to make ticket sales. Look at Daredevil<----this story deserved so much more than they gave it. What did we get? A half baked film where they took out "Stick" and his ninja training to hurry the story along. BULLSHIT. :smh:

Listen, this is a porn board most of the people here who can give a review are borderline retarded. This is'nt a place where you can exactly go to get the opinions of reasonably intelligent people for the most part. You just have people who can't understand things outside of Madea goes to prison

^^^So are you implying that porn boards are primarily populated by horny imbeciles with a limited appreciation for high brow concepts?

That detail is more "inferred" than stated in the book. You get how much Dr. Manhattan changed the layout of the whole planet, and how big a deal it is when he's gone.

A lot was left out from the book, such as the overall effect that Dr. Manhattan. For example, there was NO 1970's gas shortage because of new energy sources as created by him, which in turn helped Nixon rise in popularity. Not to mention how different the world's political climate was because Dr. Manhattan was seen as the ULTIMATE weapon, and the US had him.

Hell, Rorschach's mask was created thru technology from Dr. Manhattan. I wish they could've at least told a little about why it was able to change patterns like it did.

Rorshach and the Comedian were the ish. Night Owl was good, because he played the dude perfectly. I didn't like him in the book or the movie. They dropped the ball big time with the silk spectre and comedian storyline. but like I said it has to be a series to do the book justice.

I was telling a coworker last year that I thought Watchmen would be better as an HBO\Showtime miniseries.

Dr. Manhattan was toned down way too much. In fact that was the problem with the film. The book really ratchet up the fear of nuclear war. The movie didn't do that. Hell the movie didn't show the real impact of Veit results well. It was sloppy, but a pretty film to watch.

I agree. Veidt\Ozymandias should've been played up mere. But i also understand that the director had to fight a lot with the studio to get a lot of what we saw with him, Rorschach's history, and other stuff, even included.

I appreciated the visuals and dialogue of the movie but I walked out of that movie before it finished. I went with my 10 year old daughter expecting it to be a blockbuster XMEN type flick - based on the commercials.

Uh, you regularly take your daughter to R rated movies??? Did you bother to do ANY research to see if it was an appropriate movie for a child to see??? And what was the rating for Watchmen, as compared to any of the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Batman, or Spiderman movies???? Were any of them R rated?????

its was a niec film.....but it was lacking something..........id say..........i didint give a shit about any of these caracters except the Camedian and the masked dude with the drape over his face, i cant rmemeber his name but he was the detective.

Other than those two, the performances were....mediocore at best.

The FX was top notch, but it lacked the Depth of...say.... Dark knight and/or Iron man.

Lacked depth??? This story is so deep that most people can't get past the surface of it, because they can't understand it.

I finished reading the book (again) yesterday before I went and saw it and I'll say it's a good adaptation of some fairly complex material. Closer to Sin City than to X-men. The only thing I have a real problem with is the actress that played Silk Spectre. Gotdamn that bitch was horrible! Took me completely out of every fuckin' scene she was in. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

COSIGN 100%!!!

People were bringing tons of kids into the theatre and i just laughed to myself because i guess they assumed they were going to get Spider-Man.They were not prepared for extensive sex scenes ,nudity, and ultra violence.

So said Anchorman. Dumbasses!!!

saw it and watchmen was excellent was faithful to the book if u havent read the book just come with a open mind. it is long had my ass hurting but well worth it minor change at the end but to see doctor manhattan and roch on screeen well worth it.

I appreciated the visuals and dialogue of the movie but I walked out of that movie before it finished. I went with my 10 year old daughter expecting it to be a blockbuster XMEN type flick - based on the commercials.

Bruh that's your fault

Folks need to learn how to read...

I had heard about the watchmen before thos movie, but I otherwise know nothing of the Comic. Should I get the comic first?

I saw the movie and never really read the graphic novel. I loved it and I plan on taking my wife to see it. I hope more movies are made for thinking comicbook fans. Let's be real, if you don't even read and I'm not just talking comic books, I'm taking about reading books period don't go to this movie.

plot holes are a muthafuka, i was thinkin the same thing. now, this man can teleport anything anywhere in the fukin GALAXY, and they gotta go through all this cloak and dagger shit AND blast a city to save the world? why not just THINK about turning every nuke on the planet into a pile of dirty socks and be done with it?

Did you even watch the movie bruh? The big blue dude's whole thing is he's not really concerned with the plight of mankind. He said himself he "can't change human nature."

The other guy was concerned about humanity... but he was just as concerned about making sure HE was the savior, and nobody else.

Lacked depth??? This story is so deep that most people can't get past the surface of it, because they can't understand it.

The book was deep, the movie was considerably less so...

Having read he book gives you a much deeper appreciation of what you see on screen, but really, Watchmen the movie, is probably about as deep as, say, Fight Club.

Which really isn't all that deep... it just has a couple of big twists.

I was telling a coworker last year that I thought Watchmen would be better as an HBO\Showtime miniseries.

Fucking Co-sign right here man I told my wife the same thing while I was sitting there. This shit would be the bomb spread out over the course of a few seasons.

I bet they adapt something like this pretty soon.

I thought the movie was just decent. I have never read the comic but felt the movie needed at least another hour to flesh things out.

Ozy was a homo you didnt see his BOYS secret file when Nite Owl II cracked the code on his PC

YOU'RE RIGHT, NEVERMIND.

Seen it today on 2nd view. They had some porn on his view screen at the end too. Some big titty bitch flopping around and I thought WHY IS THAT NIGGA watching straight porn.

Not saying I want the ultimate bad guy to be a homo but in this case IT FITS.:lol:

Despite a few snags here an there and that god awful song over the end credits, SNYDER GETS AN A FOR EFFORT.
