Watchmen Drayonis REVIEW (I luv it, U hate it)

While I still think that the movie was bad. I now wish I had read the comic prior to seeing the movie. All the points you make were evident in the movie, but because I hadnt read the book it was all too much to soak up in 3hrs. This movie should NOT have been reduced to 3hrs and a mass marketing of the comic should have come before the movie was released... Just think if they would have gotten people to become interested in reading a book!

I'm glad you cleared up that Nixon thing, because I was like why in the hell is he elected for a third term.

That detail is more "inferred" than stated in the book. You get how much Dr. Manhattan changed the layout of the whole planet, and how big a deal it is when he's gone.

Excellent review my dude, you covered it to the T...I was suppose to see Madea with my girl, but this movie fit into the timeframe so we saw this instead....Im not a comic book head, so I really got lost, my girl flat out feel asleep snore and all....I kept saying to myself, where the hell is all the action at, then I started noticing people with watchmen shirts, hats; thats when I realized this had to be a novel or comic book...The concept was crazy which kept my interest, but I did find myself bored most of the time, probably because I went in thinking it was going to be batman or something similiar.

I never e'en read da comic & I thought that it was a bomb ass movie!!!:dance:

Like I said in another thread, Rorshach >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I'm glad that I know about history otherwise I wouldn've knew what da hell was goin' on in da movie. I might even go out on a limb & say that it's a possibility that it may even be better than The Dark Knight.

Rorshach and the Comedian were the ish. Night Owl was good, because he played the dude perfectly. I didn't like him in the book or the movie. They dropped the ball big time with the silk spectre and comedian storyline. but like I said it has to be a series to do the book justice.

Dr. Manhattan was toned down way too much. In fact that was the problem with the film. The book really ratchet up the fear of nuclear war. The movie didn't do that. Hell the movie didn't show the real impact of Veit results well. It was sloppy, but a pretty film to watch.

It was a Good movie. I watched it about 2 yesterday. As usual Lee Lee Thompkins would not shut da fuck up. I thought I was smart hitting my local theater early. The bad ass kids are still in school at 2 not Lee Lee's loud ass.:smh:

Is there a backstory to the Watchmen? I have never read the comic books. At times I was confused through the movie. It was clear at the end.

I liked the bloody scenes with the matrix like effect. Are there any movies like this bloody with the matrix like effect? The only one I know of is Kill Bill.

This Movie Was Garbage!!

if you like looking at a naked Blue Man's penis all through the movie (cause they showed his dick a lot)...then this flick's for you.

had to turn my head away everytime that blue motherfucker was on the screen.

so his dick was the only thing you could concentrate on in the movie? hrrrmm....strange.

The movie was pretty good... the fanboys are overstating the issue.

Movie is very flawed... coming from a guy who has read Watchmen several times, so don't start on the "don't understand it" bit. It's too long to be the intense movie it is, and too brief to live up to the standard of the comic.

Yeah, it's thought-provoking, but only if you've never been exposed to that type of viewpoint before. Really, if you've seen Taxi Driver, you're in familiar territory. And it may be good... it can't hold Taxi Driver's fucking jock.

I appreciated the visuals and dialogue of the movie but I walked out of that movie before it finished. I went with my 10 year old daughter expecting it to be a blockbuster XMEN type flick - based on the commercials.

It's definitely a movie you have to watch more than 1 time to understand. Also, Watchmen is not for kids way too graphic.

Bruh in order to see his wang you had to be looking for it.:lol::lol::lol:

See this is where a lot of people are going to get caught slipping. Like I said before most folks outside the comics enthusiast world have never heard of the Watchmen. So they are just going go by the previews.

There are a lot of people that don't pay attention to politics (until Obama ran for office) so they really don't understand the gravity of the times depicted in the film. Nuclear Holocaust was on the minds of many "especially" during the 70's and 80's. This played a big part in the film.

It really is a case study on the mind set of America during that time. If you aren't a student of history you can miss some of the "greatest" sub plots of the film and simply write the movie off as boring.

I really believe those who think it (the movie) sucks are frustrated because the film completely went "over their heads".

If you ask many of the haters to explain the movie they really couldn't because they just....didn't....GET IT!

co-sign. being a history buff i immediately sensed this at the opening credits of the film with vietnam and nixon's 'third term.' i literally laughed at both reveals...

having never read the graphic novel my expectations were greatly lowered by the mixed reception this movie has gotten all across the internet. long story short if my expectations had remained high they still would have been exceeded.

as someone else has stated this movie is uncompromising. i appreciate the movie that much more because of that fact. the director said screw the suits and chose to make a movie that he wanted to make and didn't rely on the traditional formulaic concoctions of hollywood.

unfortunately this is a thin line to tread with audiences. some movies do well with that choice (i.e. the matrix) others not so much (i.e. speed racer, v for vendetta - two movies i appreciate).

this is not a movie for individuals that do not like to think or those that have trouble with intertwining plot lines. i am not saying that those who didn't like the movie lack intelligence. i am just saying that, obviously different movie goers have different tastes.

i plan on seeing it again. i saw it on digital projector. i will probably see it on imax next.

for me this movie is easily a 4.5/5

I saw it Friday night. I never heard of the watchmen before this movie and still enjoyed it immensely. The plot was great and the twist in the end caught me off guard. I honestly wish they could have made it a little longer and explained more. I cant figure out if the watchmen or super strong or if average humans are just stronger in their universe. Do any of them have powers besides Manhattan? The dude that had the pig ears had me like?

By the way everyone who has attended middle school should know what the cold war was. Aside from Nixon getting extra terms everyone should be able to understand the situation our world was in.

you severely overestimate the intelligence of the average american. you ever see the jay walking segment on leno?

or even on this board if someone isn't posting ass the exclamation of this is a porn board. like mofos can't think about something besides ass. as evidenced by the intelligence of most of these thirsty mofos on bgol .......

 Yeah that shit is brutal. You cant fairly judge the average American by it because they never really tell how many people they interview. If you ask enough people what 2 + 2 = eventually someone is bound to answer jello.

nice review dray... i have to say just in checking the different watchmen threads since the movie dropped i'm seeing like two main camps: folks who didn't read the book going in (almost universally hating the movie) and folks who know the shit beforehand almost always defending the movie by using the "its deep/it's not for mental midgets/if you knew the book you'd get it" defense...

i wouldn't necessarily can myself a fanboy having only read (shit, HEARD) of alan moore from the comic book thread here about 2 years back so i've only been invested in these characters for like two years instead of like 20 fukn years.. i would say the book had a big impact on me regardless because of how skillful moore and the cartoonist executed it, all the UNDERSTATED shit, allusions, references, redefinition of the superhero, etc... i think of it in the same way i watch say "the godfather" (which i think is the greatest movie of all time) in that i'm watching, being entertained and being amazed at the same time by all the little details director/actor/whoever/etc. put in every scene...

so i was HYPED going into seeing this movie, as somebody who's read (and like i said loved the book) and who from reading 300 before the movie knew how much snyder liked trying to recapture the same impact/visuals from the source...

so just going off my immediate feeling when the movie was finished and i was walking out the theater, i felt disappointment. plain and simple. like i said elsewhere, i'd give it a 6/10 cuz he tried (and pulled off a fair amount of shit), but some of the acting/casting decisions let him down, and the UNDERSTATED stuff you can't really translate from book to screen (or at least he couldn;t do it)... i'd say if you don't know the book you'd be LOST like a muthafucka  esp. for a movie damn near three hours long...

there is so most posturing on the board. It is so funny. I guess there are not going to be any "you ain't a real nigga" comment in this thread. So what's next? Yes, "you are stupid cause you didn't see it like I did." Classic BGOL. The movie was a hack job at best of a great story. If you didn't get it. i understand cause like the book it moves very slow. But if you get a time to read the book you will see why it is loved so much. And why Moore stood by his principles an didn't take any money. They ruined his work. Crazy, what hollywood does for a buck.

i'd say if you don't know the book you'd be LOST like a muthafucka  esp. for a movie damn near three hours long...

didn't read the graphic novel. i wasn't lost at all. i simply paid attention. i am proud to say that my attention span is great.

its was a niec film.....but it was lacking something..........id say..........i didint give a shit about any of these caracters except the Camedian and the masked dude with the drape over his face, i cant rmemeber his name but he was the detective.

Other than those two, the performances were....mediocore at best.

The FX was top notch, but it lacked the Depth of...say.... Dark knight and/or Iron man.

I finished reading the book (again) yesterday before I went and saw it and I'll say it's a good adaptation of some fairly complex material. Closer to Sin City than to X-men. The only thing I have a real problem with is the actress that played Silk Spectre. Gotdamn that bitch was horrible! Took me completely out of every fuckin' scene she was in. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Just saw the film a few hours ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it...AND I'VE NEVER READ THE COMIC/NOVEL!!!

People keep saying that you have to be a "deep thinker" to get the movie. I think that's the wrong choice of words...I think it's more so that you have to be able to just think "outside of the box". Open your mind a bit. You don't have to be Einstein or Confucious to get the concepts and ideas of this film.

Once they brought up Nixon's 3rd term I immediately realized that this is based on an alternate or "what if" reality and had to explain that to my girl...cuz immediately she was like "I thought you could only serve 2 terms as president?"

I appreciated the attention to detail and character depth, as I think many films greatly suffer from a lack of this kind of substance. I wish more films would "take their time" and really bring the viewer into the story rather than cut out all the detail for fear of losing America's infantile attention span. :smh:

From what I saw, I got the impression that they made the best "possible" film adaptation of the book that they could have done within one 3 hour movie. The film actually made me more interested in reading the actual source material to truly understand all the nuances that could not be brought across on film.

I loved the raw, violent, in-your-face, "this ain't what you were expectin'" attitude of the film. In all actuality that's the way most of these comic book movies are REALLY supposed to be seeing as how most comic books are really very violent, graphic, and adult-oriented.

All in all, I thought this was an exceptional film. It did have it's slow moments and the acting of the Silk Spectre was a little suspect at times. But I would agree w/ others and say it was a 4.5/5 and one of the best films I've seen in a while.

OH and Rorschach is mos def one of my new favorite characters.:yes::yes:

That is the truth. I remember as a kid in the late 80's early 90's that the national focus of media was just different than it is today.

Man, I remember when the challenger explosion happened and they showed it in school. So comics and other media (Heavy Metal...etc) books were focused on grim realities of technological and social advances.

Nowadays, shuttles launch and ppl don't blink. Different times but the comic and the movie captured the nuclear fear on the head.

So basically, without reading too much for fear of spoiler, this is more of a narrative with superheroes, rather than a superhero movie. And people won't like it because there's not a ton of action all the time?

Fine by me, I'm big on story.
Bingo!

People were bringing tons of kids into the theatre and i just laughed to myself because i guess they assumed they were going to get Spider-Man.They were not prepared for extensive sex scenes ,nudity, and ultra violence.

just got done watching it. it was ok, but NOTHING spectacular. i guess cuz i never read the comic book, i had no expectations of it. but it was pretty blah to me. i did like Rorshach though. hated to see him get vaped in the end. no compromising with that one.
