The Huge Hidden Cost of Holiday Deals

xbox-holdup.jpg

I know—a juicy sale price on a gadget is hard to resist. But the extras associated with these items are the real killers. It's time to look beyond the tag in search of values.

Game Consoles

Xbox 360: Let's say you scored an Xbox 360 Pro bundle this holiday for $240. Not bad—that's a 20% savings. But you still might need/want an extra wireless controller, an HDMI cable, a wireless adapter and two play-and-charge battery kits. All of a sudden, the price jumps up to $440—nearly double the initial cost.

While you may be stuck with Microsoft wireless controllers, there are workarounds for the other components that can help bring costs down. Going with trusted 3rd party manufacturers like Nyko on peripherals is one way to do this. Their version of the play-and-charge battery kit for your controllers will save you $10 right off the bat. As for the wireless adapter, you can set up a DIY version fairly easily using a cheap router, a few feet of Cat 5 cable and open source DD-WRT firmware—saving you as much as $70. You can even use your laptop as the wireless adapter and save the entire $100.

By using your own HDMI, you can save as much as $45. And if you want to send digital audio separately, there's a simple hack to your included AV cable. All in all, the total cost of of your Xbox 360 hardware can be reduced from $440 to as little as $325.

Nintendo Wii: As far as essential add ons are concerned, Nintendo and Sony are not nearly as extreme as Microsoft. However, there are still some deals to be found on accessories if you know where to look. For example, Nyko will be offering wired versions of their Wing (classic controller) and Kama (nunchuk) for $15 apiece starting in January. A $5 savings over the official version isn't much, but it starts to add up if you are buying several controllers for party games.

Another area that you can save with the Wii involves storage. Buying the officially licensed 2GB SD card will set you back around $25—but other than the Nintendo seal there is no difference between that and a standard $10 card.

Playstation 3:
Even if you managed to score a deal on the PS3 this holiday, you are still going to shell out additional cash for an HDMI cable. By now, the world has realized that a cheap HDMI cable works just as well (in most cases) as an expensive version. Therefore, it doesn't make much sense to shell out $50-$60 for an official PS3 HDMI cable when you can get a version that is perfectly fine for as little as $5 shipped.

Computers

Hardware:
Like game consoles, picking up a new computer isn't always as straightforward as paying the sticker price. MacBooks are a good example of this. If you just picked up your first MacBook, chances are you are going to need two things right away: an upgrade to Wireless-N and an external hard drive that takes advantage of Leopard's Time Machine functionality. One option would be to drop $300 on a 500GB version—or $500 on a 1TB version—of Apple's Time Capsule wireless hard drive/base station. Granted, this is an ideal solution to both problems, but MacBooks tend to put a hurtin' on finances so there may not be much money left over to go this route.

On the lower end you could go with Apple's AirPort Express and your own external hard drive. The AirPort is actually a decent value at $99—but you can still save a little extra cash by making a sacrifice or two and going outside of Apple. For example, you can get a decent 802.11n router for as little as $70. You can also score a 500GB hard drive that can do the job via USB for $90 and under. The throughput on the router may not be as high and you may have to deal with USB cables on the hard drive, but you are still getting fully functioning hardware at a sizable discount.

Software: It's almost never a good idea to purchase additional software from the manufacturer of your computer as an add on. If, for some reason, you decided to get the Microsoft Office Home and Student 2008 suite from Apple they would charge you $135 extra when it can be easily had elsewhere for around $110. Dell goes even further by charging $149 for Office Home and Student 2007 when a version licensed for 3 PCs can be had for $75.

Home Theaters

Cables: Whenever you purchase home theater equipment there are a seemingly endless variety of hidden costs that can end up nickle-and-diming you to death. Again, cabling is a big part of this equation. As I mentioned earlier, in most cases shelling out big bucks for fancy HDMI cable isn't much different that flushing your cash down the toilet. However, at cable distances greater than 6 feet or so this may not always be the case. As we learned in our Truth About Monster Series, as a general rule, it is better to purchase your cables from a discount retailer like Monoprice and give them a shot before spending wads of money on products like Monster with enormous markups.

Installation: Wall mounting televisions and installing surround sound speakers can be expensive and/or labor intensive. Of course, there are alternatives that can help you avoid these pitfalls. Even if you have your heart set on a wall mount, there are stands out there like the Synchro Furniture Mate that are designed to achieve the wall-mounted look without the hassle of tearing up your walls. As noted in our post on tips for buying an HDTV, if you decide to do it yourself to save a little extra cash, make sure you plan things out in advance. I would also suggest pricing your mount across the internet before purchasing at retail because the markups are likely to be astronomical. Case in point: Best Buy is offering a Sanus tilting wall mount for $145 when a quick visit to Pricegrabber revealed that the same mount is selling on Amazon for $78.

As for setting up surround speakers, it definitely pays to do it yourself. The old-fashioned method can be problematic, but there are solutions as simple as picking up some 4-strand flat speaker cable and running it along your baseboard. It costs under $60 from start to finish, it's simple and it looks great. Again, plan ahead and price your mounts online before heading off to your local electronics store.

These are but a few examples of how add ons and extras can kill a budget, but the point is clear—it pays to look at the big picture. Before you jump at a sale price, do a little research and think about the total cost of ownership. If you look hard enough, you can find deals that will help you save in the long term.

You know. I got them both so its whatever for me. But when you got fanboys like jagi, RealHipHop and matt here you know its going to happen.

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

what the fuck?

i came in here on page 3

and go back to my bgol gaming posts. my first current gen console was a 360. Then the Wii then the PS3.

I just chose what i felt is the better hardware for gaming and media. (Personal Opinion of course)

but carry on.

:lol: I remember that episode. Man i bet that XBOX still worked if the face plate did not come off. Also i went through 7 PS2's but i have a friend at EB that would swap them out for me. Man my PS2's got the fucked up disc tray shit and the Disc Read Error that sony was sued for near the end of the PS2's life span. Shit it was to lat then because many people had already bought a couple new ones. It got to the point where i learned how to fix the PS2 disc tray issue and i was charging cats to fix that shit. Replaced laser's and more for quick cash.

word. how soon niggaz forget. the ps 2 was the cheapest most unreliable console ever. that disc read error was fuckin absurd. and lets not forget that if a disc had the slightest scratch... it wouldn't even boot up. it stayed at the memory card screen. :smh: and @ dude talkin about a system that's going to be around for 4-5 yrs. lack of quality software has been known to send consoles to an early grave. fanboys sicken me.:hmm:

:rolleyes:So now I'm a fanboy.

Just cause I'm not blindly following the xbox I get labeled a fanboy. To be honest if the PS3 didn't have games that appealed to me I wouldn't have that either. I only fuck with quality shit. Hell back in the day I spent equal time with the SNES and Genesis and then with the PS1 and N64 the gen after. I follow games not systems.

 riiiiiiiiiiiiiight. tell me what "quality games" you fukkin with on ps3.

I'm fucking with you because you defend the PS3 so much. I talk shit about any system. If it has valid faults im all for it.

fuck outta here with that pc games > console games bullshit. you playin left for dead when it's on the 360? i thought you was gonna say some super capcom vs.marvel/dc/street fighter jump off.:smh:

anyway gotta co-sign sega fukkin up yet again. they fucked up on the Saturn (which was better than ps 1) and they fukked up on dreamcast which was better than ps2. they let bad mgmt and piracy kill the dreamcast. i still play my saturn and dreamcast till this day. they both kick ass when it comes to fighting games.

The Saturn was horrible, and not better than the PS1. PS1 was the first console that was polygon based. SEGA found out late in the Saturn development cycle about Sony and tried to make the Saturn able to handle polygons, by doing a last second redesign. It didnt work out as you saw.

I'm just gonna say this. I pray and pray that by the time Street Fighter 4 comes out, Xbox will have released this rumored updated controller with EIGHT way directional pad.

Anyone who tried to play any fighting games with this HORRID Xbox controller should share my hopes.

No lie I say a short prayer everytime I turn on my 360 I never play for more then 2 hours then when I'm done I unplug all the power cords just so I won't get the red ring.....My son has a Wii its just to kiddie for me.

:roflmao::roflmao::roflmao: That's a fucking shame...

I got PS3 and a 360 and I like them both, that blu ray player on the pS3 is excellent but the one problem I do have with the PS3 is how Sony said how powerful it was going to be, I was thinking they meant how the graphics would be so much better but when u compare graphics on both systems they look about the same except for MGS4 which is the best looking game on any console out there but that is only one game. Right now you are just paying extra money for because it has a blu ray player on it. My thing is what is the PS3 true power and how will they show us that power because every game on the 360 looks just as good or better than games do on the PS3. Sony needs to step up and show owners of this console what it can really do or they will continue to get criticize big time and continue to be 3rd in sales.

The Saturn was horrible for 3D but it was the best 2D console ever made...

LOL bullshit. The saturn was the better hardware. Also how did they find out about the PS1 and do a redesign when the saturn came out first. Also one of the launch games was virtual fighter so you telling me that i was never meant to be 3D? Virtual fighter 2 cam our a year later. Man STFU.

If your going by sales i wouldnt say the ps3 is in the dust. prior to the 360 price cut the ps3 was cruising.

here are the total sales to date based on jan. 2008 to nov. 2008

If your going by sales.

Console Year 2008 sales (as of November)
Wii 8,001,000
Xbox 360 3,295,400
PlayStation 3 2,818,900
PlayStation 2 2,092,300

Handhelds
Nintendo DS
6.91 million
PlayStation Portable 2.81 million

for 2 consoles that are about twice the price or half the price the difference is about 500k

Well, yes Jagi, but consider that the Wii is hard to come by (I do not know if that is still true), and the PS3 got a sales boost when MGS4 came out and when they won the Blu-ray wars. And don't get me wrong, I know the PS3 is a better machine by far, but just the price is killing them. But gat damn, Wii is fucking killing them all in sales. I have a Wii and that shit is collecting dust apart from when I play Wii Tennis or we play the bowling game, which is like once in a blue moon

Well, they have not really tapped into the power of the Cell processor as of yet. maybe once they do that they might have the games looking better. I have not checked the specs for the PS3 as it relates to the graphics card they are using for it, but that also determines a lot. I was a PS3 "fan boy" before it came out, but they just waited too fucken long, and I copped a 360. Believe me, I will own a PS3, but that price has to drop, and I am pretty satisfied with my 360.

No RROD issues 3 years going, and it works great for me as a media hub. I have a 500GB external HD plugged into it from which I watch movies. The external HD, my Internet service (Bit Torrent downloads), and the xbox remote is saving me a bunch of money with renting movies :rolleyes: I'm loving it.

Honestly I'm about 2 seconds from turning my PlayStation 3 from a gaming console to a media hub (or what ever you call it)....Basically putting a large hard drive on it and moving all of my (hollywood) movies on it and leaving the gaming shit alone. I haven't spent money on a new game since June (MGS4) and I mostly get used games for less than $10 and I kinda feel like I'm growing out of games.

you aint lying homie!! thats what i did??:lol::lol::lol:

The way the economy is right now it's just bad timing for PS3. Microsoft was smart about the Xbox 360 knowing that not every nigga on earth owns a 1080p hdtv. Half the niggaz I know don't even own a HDTV yet. First quarter 2009 if Sony doesn't drop the price to $300 the PS3 will suffer a huge loss.

Never drop a Sony product. NEVER! PSPs, Sony Vaios, Walkmans, etc. You will have to replace it.:smh:

Sony uses cheap products for everything.

That's why those PS2's were getting Disc Read Errors because they use the cheapest fucking lasers they can find.

It use to be hell paying 50 dollars for a game, taking the wrapper off, putting that bitch in and getting this:

Dude MS extended the warranty on the xbox 360, just cause the RROD and send that joint back. I made sure mine had the new chips. It's noisy as fuck but it works no problems.

Never had an issue w/ my PS2...I bought it around the time GTA III dropped so maybe the problems were fixed by then... :dunno:

thank you. i swear niggaz just be deep throatin anything with a sony label on it. if half of those fighters came to the U.S. Saturn .... it would've been a wrap for sony. again bad marketing fucked sega up. and what people fail to realize is that the ps1 and ps 2 had hundreds of games and 3/4 of them weren't worth shit.

This is what I had to do with my PS2, except I checked if it worked before I closed it again:

Nah you were just lucky.

They never fixed it, they just released that PS2 slim shit...

word. sony didn't give two shits about the ride or die niggaz( some who are probably even in this thread). They just released a new slim model and said "pay me bitches":smh:

SEGA SATURN WAS TRASH. I GOT A PLAYSTATION WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT. I HAD VERY FEW PROBLEMS WITH THE PLAYSTATION. SEGA DREAMCAST WAS ALSO A GOOD SYSTEM.

It was not trash if you imported. Same as the dreamcast in japan they had so many games that never made it here and i was importing my ass off. Got my dreamcast at japan launch and cats was hating. Brought that shit the EB games and hooked it up when soul calibur came out in japan(6 months before the DC even dropped in the US) Man we had to pull the gate down because so many people were trying to come in and play it.

The SATURN Japanese game library alone > ps1. If you was one of the dudes who bought a saturn and relied on U.S. games .... then yes, it was trash. With the Ram cart the saturn kicked ass.

Marvel Super heroes vs. Street Fighter
X men vs. Street Fighter
Fire Pro Wrestling six man scramble
King of Fighters 95-97
DarkStalkers Trylogy
Super Street Fighter collection
Samurai Shodown Collection
I still rock with my Saturn to this day.
Guardian Heroes  this game alone > any game on ps1 with the exception of msg solid maybe.
