Verizon DSL Vs Comcast cable......

K heres the deal i had aol dsl(download speed was 768/128kbs) for about 6 years until i recently switched to comcast(speed is 4mb/768kbs). the speeds were very good until i started having severe connection problems, and everytime my connection failed i had to disconnect my router and hook the PC directly to the cable modem to get the connection back and that process takes way longer than its supposed to. anyways ive pretty much decided to ditch comcast and get another ISP, so far verizon is looking like the best one of all. they have two speed packages available in my area, the first is 768/128kbs for $19 for 12months,and 3mb/768Kbs for $29 for 12months, im not sure what the prices are after the 12 months are over though.

So basically i need some input from people who have verizon's service, Are the speeds exactly as advertised? Do you get disconnected constantly like Comcast? Do they Cap download or uploads or both? etc.

Thanks.

I use Verzion without any problems. Speeds as advertised. I haven't had disconnections.
No upload/download problems.

I've also had Comcast. It was good service although it would drop connection once and a while. Only reason I switched is because Verzion was less plus it has better upload speeds.

But you might wanna check your router if it works when you connect directly to the modem. The router might be the cause of your problems.

 ...and the verizon sales people will tell you in a heartbeat that dsl is faster than cable and swear to it...I laffed when the bish on the phone told me that shit..... :hmm:
Shit I just switched a few months ago and the difference was AMAZING! DSL kept giving me problems and would often go out for hours at a time. None at all with Comcast. And I pay the same as I did with DSL.

Well the router seems to work in fact the reason i suspect comcast to be the problem is because when i connect directly to the modem it takes several minutes to get the Ip address back, even when i do Ip release/renew it still takes much longer than it should. But your right the router could be the problem but i doubt it. heres the router i have. http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Sate...825655&pagename=Linksys/Common/VisitorWrapper
it wasn't my first choice but it was cheaper than the other routers i saw, also when i first got the router it was giving me problems too but thats cause the firmware wasn't up to date but now its been updated since last year and because i still get problems i suspect comcast is just shitty

PS. oh yea and i don't have FIOS in my area so that sucks too lol

Have you tried calling Comcast and having a service tech come out? Sounds like your upstream power is out of range. Usually it means the cable coming into your house is connected incorrectly. Either the cable feeding your internet is spliced from another line (it should be the primary line going into your house) or there are too many splices off of that line to other rooms in your house. Shit will take about an hour to fix (if that) and you'll be blazin' again. Comcast is one of the fastest providers in the country and ALL cable is faster than DSL. You may also want to check the line inside your house, make sure the cable isn't being crushed or kinked by a piece of furniture or something. Cats kill me changing service before even trying to get their shit fixed. My pops did the same shit and has been coomplaining about his DSL ever since.

DSL could be much better, but Verizon don't wanna bone up and provide new infrastructure. Oh well, I guess its cable for me.

you cats think DSL is faster than cable? huh?

WTF?

    man, there's no comparison... my roadrunner cable is LIGHTNING fast.

Ive had both and to be honest, Theres no Big Difference Now a Days.
But I think Digital Cable is Better then Satalite.

Well heres my update:

the comcast tech came to my crib checked everything and of course he said nothin seemed to be wrong, then he saw that the cable wire wasn't grounded so he took care of that and attached a new cable line,4 hours later im still havin problems lol only thing i can do at this point is wait this shit out and at $60/month thats hurtin me for sure. BTW I already know that cable is technically faster than DSL overall, my problem is basically connection problems and im tryna see if there are others who have the same problem with comcast and if so what they did to correct the problem, at this point im thinkin that the problem isn't with my router or my modem(since the indicator lights all seem fine) it seems the problem is somethin over at comcast's end.

Cable (Cox) was faster for me (therefore more expensive)...but the shit kept getting knocked out...after reading this thread it could've been problems with my modem but I had a cable connect again (Cox again) later this year and still had problems with connectivity...DSL is slower (and less expensive) but has been steady for me...

I was having the same kind of problem with Time-Warner cable. I got a new modem and it solved the problem.

Thanks for the info, thats pretty much the next logical step im gonna take, im tryna see if they can replace the modem which came with install package which is a RCA cable modem(and RCA has always been shitty). Hopefully they can just replace the modem with another brand they have cause im not tryna pay for one lol

Keep calling them out.

When I first got Comcast 3 years ago, I had nothing but problems with the cable and the Internet. I was on a first name basis with the repair guys they came out so often. Each guy came out and tried to do something (change a wire etc.) to justify the visit, but no quick fix. I got SBC DSL just as a backup, but CLAWD that ish was slow! Once you get used to cable, nothing else will do. They finally put in some kind of signal booster and I was cool until recently. No problems w/cable, but my Internet service goes out for some time every day. The cycle continues…

One service tech mentioned that signals are better in certain areas than others esp. worse in areas that are expanding quickly. Shit! I live in an established neighborhood in Chicago where I shouldn’t have any problems. I should have a better signal for the $200 a month I pay Comcast, but at this point there is no viable alternative. Comcast is that hoe I can’t help but keep paying.

lol well i do live in a mostly black area, maybe if i lived in the damn suburbs i'd have better service lol i dunno. Also instead of paying $150 for there homenetworking plan i i got my own wireless router and i always thought they were punishing me for not using there plan lol i guess i'll never know.

Dog, if they didn't log into your cable modem and run diagnostics, they didn't do shit. Call them back out. They should be able to open a browser window and see your cable modem's diagnostic screen. If they don't know the IP for your cable modem, they can get it from your router or form your PC by running the "ipconfig /all" command from the command prompt (only if your PC is directly connected to your modem). The IP is usually somehitng like 192.168.100.1. Once they did that with mine, they immediately saw the problem (downstream power). I also had an RCA cable modem for a while, it was a POS, but anything you rent form them is going to be a POS, so you may have to go out and buy one, I got a linksys and all of my cable modem problems went away. They have to check your upstream and downstream power on your cable line. Internet requires more power than just TV and if the power is out of range, your connection will go up and down (that's usually what it is when you see all of the activity lights are lit, but you have no connection). If your cable infrastructure in the area is no good or old, they may have to add one or more signal boosters to your line to get the downstream power right.

I have no problems with my Verizon and my boy got warned about his bittorrent downloading/uploading with Comcast here in Virginia.

Yea they did bring up the diagnostic page on my browser and everything, i didn't mention it up before because i didn't wanna get too technical, they did the usual stuff Ipconfig release/renew shit too. The problem is everytime these techs come over to your house the connection problems you have aren't happening right there for them to see,he lights on the modem indicate that its working fine but my problem is i get a connection and then 10 minutes later it fails, and that been happening for the past 4 days now pretty much.

And its funny what you mentioned about the modem cause i was gonne get them to replace the modem with another brand besides RCA lol but after what you said it looks like i may as well buy a new one.

|Comcast is fast but I'm now using DSL through Cavalier. ANybody else on the east coast using this? I have no complaints.

I would go ahead and get a modem then, if you still have problems, call the service tech back out and TELL him you want him to add a signal booster to your line, they may have to add up to four in some cases to get the signal right. Then TELL dude to check the external line going into your house (the one going to your internet connection) for splices, if there are splices, make him put in an order to have your cable rerun correctly.

thanks for the info zero i really appreciate it, i just hope these fools aint tryna charge me money for the signal booster lol

yea we got Cavalier here in philly but they force you to get there phone service in order to get there DSL.

But i am intersting in why you switched though, were you havin a shitty experience with comcast like me? lol

Also i forgot to mention that when they bring up the diagnostic page in the browser it indicates that the connection is fine like as far as the power signal and all that shit, but for some reason the connection still goes out often. Anyways im gettin the modem exchanged for another brand besides RCA even if they'll still be POS modems hopefully the change will solve the problem.

My main reason was the cost. I just bought a new place and got phone service. It's 9.99 a month for DSL and 34.99 Unlimited long distance and all the features in a phone package. The $9.99 is for three months and then it goes up toe $24.99. Verizon charges extra for all it's features which would equal more than 34.99 and then 29.99 for lower speed DSL! I've been using Cavalier and it's fine except for the fact I had to wait three weeks for my modem.

Comcast is blazing fast, however, I haven't ordered cable yet and for what I'm paying for it's too expensive. I get 1.5MBs from DSL compared to the 6MBps from Comcast, but I'm not getting hit up for $57 a month (not even including digital cables). My first few months in my new place I'm not trying to overdo the non-essential things. As long as I've got internet access, Cable can wait. Besides, I'm still seeing what's up with Dish TV.

CPT Callamity, I pay $30 a month for Comcast. (plus I think $3.95 for the modem)

What part of the Chi you stay at? I'm out by Midway and got no problems. Some of my guys that stay up north always talk about their cable going out.

check and see if they hve verizon FIOS in your neighborhood. faster than DSL and more reliable then comcast because your not sharing a connection. plus their cable services are cheaper than comcast

lol i aint in the suburbs so Fios aint available.

been with comcast for 5 yrs.... only had 1 in 10 had an issue...cant wait til FiOS drops in the city....it pisses me off how they start in the subburbs first, then again their competing with comcast in MA

hmmmm well heres my issue with verizon, We all know dsl is more than capable of achieving far more than 3mb speeds(cavalier's 10mb service proves this) yet for some reason verizon's highest speed is 3mb for there dsl service after that they have FIOS which is only available in the suburbs and shit. if verizon really wanted to compete with comcast they would have a third dsl option of atleast 6mb for lets say $49/month, even if they charged $59/month like comcast atleast people could have fair alternatives between different companies.
