UFC 188 Cain Velasquez (champ) vs. Fabrício Werdum (intern champ)

It wasn't only the altitude, Werdum's Muy Thai is sick, and his jiu jitsu is high level...

oh i dont disagree but when have you ever seen cain tired like that

i mean he was exhausted, bruh

Strange. Cain seems to have superior endurance to every heavy. Thought Werdum would suffer the effects more than him. Cain's endurance is fucking legendary.

Werdum arrived in Mexico City a month before the fight so he got use to the altitude. He also his last fight was there as well.

I'm sure the altitude didn't help, but Werdum deserves credit for walking Cain like a dog on a leash with his Muy Thai clench, bloodying up his face with strikes, and eating Cain's strikes like Nabisco treats. This fight was over before it began. Werdum is always the underdog, but he keeps beating his favored opponents. It's time to stop making excuses and just give the man credit where it's due. Apparently, he actually is that good and beating Fedor wasn't a fluke.

...but training in Mexico City for nearly two months vs only two weeks? Yeah, no matter how good your cardio is, that wasn't a smart plan, especially after such a long layoff from the octagon. Your first fight since 2013 is Werdum, the dude who just KO'd Mark Hunt??? :smh:

Well damn. Who planned that shit?

Cain got destroyed after his last layoff too. This might end up going 3 like it did with Junior.

Yeah, that was a dumb move from Cain's coaching staff...

He was very good. Didn't look GREAT in the first round but now that I see how good he ended up, I have to go see it again. He did a fantastic job 2nd and 3rd

...his Coach implored Cain to come out to Mexico City earlier but, inexplicably, he chose not to.
Well, he's a fool then. I don't know if it was pride or over-confidence, but tough psychology isn't going to overcome basic biology. You cannot FIGHT well if you cannot BREATHE. I thought Cain was smarter than that. Luckily, the HW division isn't exactly stacked. So, if he doesn't get an immediate rematch (which I doubt he will because the loss was so decisive), it won't be long before he's fighting for the strap again.

Yea they didnt really say why, but it was mentioned on the Embedded show, and again during the broadcast.

Can't take anything away from Werdum he took Cain's best shots and kept going foward. Werdum has come a long way in the standup department. He can put people to sleep with strikes now to go with his elite level BJJ.

Would love to see an immediate rematch, but I think Arlovski is next in line.

Arlovski would get knocked out in that fight and I don't think they will give Cain a rematch because of the way he lost. I think Werdum's next opponent will be Dos Santos.

That Rodriguez-Rosa fight was great. Agreed with the fam'. For those who haven't seen it ... track it down online. That 1st round was wild. The kicks (spinning & switch), the aggression, the sub attempt, etc. Props to Cain and Fabricio for delivering a solid main event. There wasn't much feeling out process whatsoever. They went at it ... and that pace was tough to keep up for any weight division given the elevation, let alone @ heavyweight. Big cats scrapping! Very cool to see Fabricio lock in the interim & legit heavyweight titles nearing the end of his career. He has improved his cardio & striking in recent years. Subbed Fedor 5 years ago this summer. Has beaten Nelson, Nogueira, Brown & Hunt for good measure. His last loss was to Overeem 4 years ago. Keep in mind this is the same guy (Werdum) who got KTFO by JDS (of all people) 7 years ago this October in just over 1 minute. The same JDS who starched Cain in 1 minute a handful of years back, before getting destroyed in their 2nd and 3rd fights with Cain serving up straight destruction. Props to Fab'. Props to the cats with the quick subs on the televised prelims too.

What if Cain has been on PED's like Rothwell said? Maybe due to the new UFC drug testing and penalties he stayed home until he could get clean from it. That could have helped him look so gassed in addition to the altitude change.

Rothwell's a salty bitch. Cain wasn't superhuman. He was just a great grappler, with good cardio and effective striking. Lesnar was the more obvious candidate for a juiced up HW. Both of Cain's losses came after long layoffs and this time it was compounded by altitude and a game opponent. Fighters always wait until after the champ takes an L to claim they got 'exposed,' as if even great fighters just can't take an L.

Ayo, THIS kid was nasty, though! Dide was out their looking like a Mexican Ong Bak.

No doubt, MFH. He got the party started. People were just chilling and shit ... BBQ'ing. As soon as he started with the mixed attack, people were watching and having fun. That switch-kick though? Damn!

Cain got his ass whipped.Cains strategy was to keep Werdum on his feet than his corner was like fuck that take your chances on the ground. That was the corners way of throwing in the towel without actually having to do it.

Great to see Werdum's late career resurgence too. He's improved his game (stand-up especially), has racked up some good wins (Fedor, Browne, Hunt, Velasquez, etc) and collected the interim & legit heavyweight straps along the way in 2014 & 2015 respectively. Acclimating himself to the high elevation and climate for many weeks prior to both the Hunt & Cain V' fights too. Hard to believe it's been 7 years since Werdum got KO'd by JDS, and 5 years since he subbed Fedor (widely considered the GOAT).

His stand up surprised the hell out of me.When Cain dropped them bombs early in the 1st and Werdum ate them I knew it was gonna be a long and good fight.

He did a great job in the Travis Browne fight in 2014 too. If you haven't had a chance to check that one out, definitely make sure to stream/download it, or look for it on FightPass. It's really impressive for a heavyweight who wasn't known for working the stand-up for the majority of his career. He lit up Browne.
