***Tripster's 2008 Investments (Ongoing thread)***

Up for Monday Morning! Anybody want a young apprentice? I just opened my account with TDAmeritrade. So coal companies is what I need to be researching right now?

right now sure coal is a great place to begin, natural gas another good spot (GDP,HK,CHK), lotsa info on the board here,,
good move on starting up, now you just need that 1st position..

I see many natural gas stocks have hit a high today! I jumped on a few shares of HK @ 40 and added the others to my watch list. I saw you posted some WIND stocks before and I'll be damned most of them are green. Got some PAL+, SMI and SWC. Do ya'll think commodities will help me pick a little gain? I want to jump in on SLW...

wow you got a good entry on HK @ 40, near term for it CHK & GDP are very bullish...so sit tight on that.

SLW is a good play very much ties to silver spot prices, it goe up when silver foes up, silver took a hit today so SLW ain saying much...commodites are the only markets doing anything is this market. Ags/Metals/Coal/Oil/Gas...short Financials,,that's your snapshot on this market for now

good luck

kjX...
i had to come bact to your post, the coal boom that is sweeping canada's west has been creating some monster stock moves, that most of us in the US havent really seen since the tech boom, here's an article dated 5/1 http://saturnminerals.com/images/News Booklet.pdf
at it's time of press, GXS was 4.67, its now above 15, in 1 month similar moves have occured in other stocks jumping into the fray..http://biz.yahoo.com/iw/080619/0408957.html most are up over 300% in one month, rather remarkable, this region is the same where Potash mines it's goldmine in potash... quite interesting,,,

here are some of the players in the region (thier pink sheet tickers)
gxsff.pk grsff.pk bittf.pk sfrsf.pk kxplf.pk wcurf.pk cudbf.pk saeuf.pk wegof.pk
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/cq?d=v1&...kxplf.pk++wcurf.pk+cudbf.pk+saeuf.pk+wegof.pk

canadian tickers..
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/cq?d=v1&s=gxs.v+vgn.v+btt.v+sf.v+kex.v+wcu.v+cdb.v+smi.v+wgf.v+

I'm not sure what to make of it all,...GXS seems to be the leader & then the others seem to be leeching & trying to get on....i'll monitor it, but with coal flying off the meters, they might all still return well even after those runs, 4/14 GXS was .19c now $15.30...+7952% damn,,& thats after it's fallen from $19+,....man,,,i'm happy usually w/ 10%-40% lol:)

I had dropped a stock here a while back in the same region Potash One (KCL.v/KCLOF.pk) it was about $3.50, now $5.00, the TSX seems to me like a hotbed for high flying stocks, certainly can't knock the returns though

update 6.23
Jumped into the fray..copped BTT.v @ .86 , sucker at 1.00 now man,,,

Man, I did but I was shook I only picked up 5 shares . I'm a little apprehensive since I'm just starting out. I'm thinking that the prices of oil stocks is rising so quick due to speculation, and I'm not sure how this Fed meeting tomorrow will effect stock prices. What do ya'll think?

get your feet wet playa before you know it you will be swimming like a fish, :)

Feds can't save anyone from the realities of faulty banking/high inflationary prices/failing banks. Commodity prices will continue to rise of heavy demand...we're in a recession, people are losing jobs/homes...so what can the fed do to fix that??the beat goes on!!

5 shares, read up on option trading, you expend less capital & get higher returns. but welcome into the investing thing,,,got to think some plays out, in your case HK has to go up $10 for you to make $50, then remove commisisons, so sometimes you have to look at what the possible outomes could be...

for example,,
today in the am, lets say you wanted to go long on HK.
you have 2 choices 1)buy HK stock 2)buy HK call
1) HK stock was $40, so a 10 share lot cost $400
2) 40 July Call on HK this AM was $3.50, so 1 contract would cost $350

now these equivalent investments at the end of the day was such:
1)HK closed at 43.00, so your position up $30
2)HK 40 Jul Call closed at $5.10, position up $160

but get your feet wet & just keeep learning,,,

Damn that GXS chart is sexier than a M.I.T.B. post!! Crazy thing is I went through the trouble of finding out how to buy canada stocks through my broker but didnt make a buy. Kicking my self now. But I did pick up some BTT today as well. Since the money is starting to get real global around here I may bave to look into opening another account. One where I dont need human assistance to buy into foriegn exchanges. I want it to be simple like that vomitting E*trade baby.

Privy...soon is a relative word, PAL is acting a bit strnage lately, normally you'd see PAL react the spot price on palladium rising, of late it hasn't & in fact has gone the oposite way. I'm not sure of the timeframe, perhaps it will take another profitable quarter for them to be taken serioulsy, the market pulled back heavy today on the fed meeting, seems as tho they took down all the runners & then brought them back up, ...big boys & thier money, this game is not meant for retail so when you see all this all you can do is hope to come out ok...

Coal Producers Struggle to Meet Demand
By Kris Maher
Word Count: 753 | Companies Featured in This Article: Peabody Energy, Consol Energy, Massey Energy, National Coal
U.S. coal producers have been largely unable to meet growing demand because of a lengthy permitting process, lack of capital investment and a shortage of skilled miners, which will keep supplies tight and prices high.

The underlying industrywide issues are compounded by severe floods in the Midwest, which have stranded barges full of coal and submerged railcars used to haul coal. It isn't clear what impact those interruptions will have on supplies and prices.

Paul Forward, a coal analyst with Stifel, Nicolaus & Co., expects demand for coal in the U.S. to outstrip supply this year by 15 million tons....

good pick up offwerk...also see GXS got more permits, that sucker will likely keep running, I'm hoping for some tag along action w/ BTT we'll see....

http://www.kitcosilver.com/
good to see metals on the rebound & looks like financials are going to tumble lower after that slight attempt at a run ....
Gold 907.70 +2.53%
Silver 17.25 +3.05%
Platinum 2061.00 +2.90%
Palladium 467.00 +1.08%
Rhodium 9860.00 +0.00%

The volatilty in the sector has to exists as for sure metal prices are going higher, but there will be bumps in the road, as we've seen w. AGs,Coals,Metals,,,the long term is up, the bumps you have to just live with,,,,Coals got hit a bit yesterday I expect them to pick up

I know the feeling man this the spot! Yeah I heard about Pepsi upgrade. Its a nuetral on its lowest price in over a year. They expect.06 profit.

funny what $$$ will make you give a damn about huh LMAO

All things considered, not a bad week, Coals were lil shaky but some were major runners today(ANR/PCX/MEE) still JRCC is fighting to keep it up,,,

How about that CHK/HK/GDP combo,,,powerful moves there as well..

right now I'd say BUILD a good position in BTT/or another of those Canadian coal plays, the run will come,,,just give it time..

PAL/SWC shot up, al did most metal plays, good to see, Palladium seems stable above 450, thats good....need to break $500 next,

AMSC is a dog & man the wind plays on APWR went sour, quick...

Funny thing I was just contemplating earlier about adding more Canadian coal plays. Im not gonna lie I did the math on that GXS. A $500 investment when she was .20 would have been a $45g profit!! Do I think im late to the party?...no. Every couple of decades events happen that smart or lucky people take advantage of that & create wealth for generations. Railroads, ships, automobiles, medicine, cell phones,computers,internet,ipods,.etc. As of now I feel like my eyes have been opened(thanks in part to this thread)to our generations great opportunity. Seems like this earth is about to payout big! These AG's,energy,bio-fuels are looking monsterous. POT,MOS,GXS have been making life altering moves granted you got the right kind of moola to invest. I didnt profit from those exact 3 but glad to be in thier presence. Atleast I know im in the right place.Opportunity knocks. Good Luck to all....

I took some profits this week, because I'm somewhat concerned about next week's preformance, particularly on Monday. We may get a steep, broad based decline, and I want to be ready for it.

Btw, GOAM is on the way up ($7.07, +21% since 5/9). I'm holding on to PAL (might as well...lol), and COIN (same). Got out of RIMM 3 weeks ago (so glad), will get back in under $90. About to pull the trigger on SOHU.

Let's Get It.

Alot of data dropping next week, as well as quarter rebalance for fund managers, so i can see the skepticism, I think the sectors that are going to go up regarless remain the same, with lil bumps in the road. Looking for metals to really start a rally here, & push up, Gold was trapped for a while in a range & finally broke through, we'll see....

PAL will get there gentlemen, the only thing I don't like about PAL is that clown Cramer likes it as well...i hate when he gets behind any stock i'm in.

CANSF made a little dough for me but im down almost 4K from buying Pal at $8. Its moving back up though. This is my favorite thread on this board. Now when I get the newspaper the first section I go to is business.

I feel that on cramer that cat seems to move with the wind, or whoever is most likely $igning to him, but how do you know about the rebalance thing?

Thats how the industry runs, every Quarter close you have managers switching up plays, moving money from here to there, you have indexes changing who's going to be part of them,,
