***Tripster's 2008 Investments (Ongoing thread)***

Yeah, I made a good exit out of pal at around 9.25. It is now back to 8.30, I scoop up more.

However I am stuck with E trade (ETFC), they need to be back up into the 6+ for me to look good.

Etrade's best chances are for a buyout, but any suitor will watch it fall lower before making a bid. They have no legs on their own, I'd be curious who'd look to snatch them up though. Thier books are carrying alot of underperfoming assets..

What does that mean for those of us in deep on ETFC?:smh::smh::puke::puke:

Simply means e*trade is a troublesome stock to be in, ask yourself what will cause it to bounce back to any bit of life, it's moved from 30 all the way down to 3 in a 3 year span. It made the mistake of investing in morgage backed securities & rode the subprime woes down, look at Countrywide, BOA let them lose all bit of life THEN offered them the buyout, and such a cheap buyout considering where it once stood. Etrade has to attract suitors, I'm not sure by selling off assets, which they've began to do If they can restructure that company. It's just a case of a good company, who invested in the wrong things, at the wrong time. If you're an investor & you're over 50% underwater, find returns elsewhere that allow you to write off the loss, or hold and hope. once they stay capable of doing biz, there is still some hope...but those that got in high, i think its just got to be written off

I'm seeing shit tumble all over, looking for 3 picks to make a good return on. I'm talking 3 to six month time frame. Anyone got any ideas, looking to put another 2000 into this.

The game ain change,,same picks in this tread are ones folks are going long on, these aren't hit & runs..

I have almost 600 shares Etrade @2.70 3.10 and a few at 4.90. Im not selling. Someones gonna buy the damn thing. I am in high on PAL @ 9.10 & 8.75 but remain confident and buying on the dips. I suppose today was as good a day as any to grab SWC but I didnt. Maybe it dipd more. I set a buy limit in at 19.00.....order not executed.

Thanks for the vote of confidence on ETFC, I am going to sit tight on it. PAL went as low as 8.20 today. I sold a bunch of PAL at 9.25 and bought more at 8.29. I used the limit function on my BofA self direct account:dance:

What a crazy day...at 10am, stocks looked like they were on to a breakout, then grand wiz Bernake stepped up & with each word all markets went down, commodites/stocks/metals. PAL shot up to $9.30 only to soon hit $8.20, SWC got to $22.72, then down to $20.08. MOS,POT,AGU and all aggies got a beating, maybe Krammers smiling, but they pulled back up a bit
PAL & SWC closed at $8.46 & 20.64, more important was palladium being taken down to $550, while platinum stayed steady over $2200. All stocks looked like crap today..............except one....

COIN, now i expected the thing to tank, after the huge run, and it did..it quick shot to $15.60 then rolled down to $13.79 & then amazingly managed to close GREEN on a hellish day like today,,,COIN looks strong, $20 could be around the corner,,but for now,,,I'll take $15.29

A commentator today mentioned that when the dollar bounces back commodities will plummet. I laughed to myself. I dont think our dollar is going to regain strenth for awhile. But the Yen is creeping up.

:yes::yes::yes:

"Would you like some cappuccino, Mr Darkman?"

"Would you like to take the car home for 2 nights before you buy it , Mr. Darkman"

" I can bring the paper to your office to sign, Mr Darkman"

 but this is true.

Shook Ones...
Well as i've said things will get volatile...platinum & paladium have slipped back to 2186 & 533 respectively...PAL/SWC have been shook, wil likely get shaken more..the South African government is said to be looking at wasy to attempt to restore power, that is an improbability, you can't just fix that, and come winter time their strains will be even greater..I'm sticking long on PAL, SWC as well, the volatility is just part of the equation here, if you're going long you know why...if you're getting out, youre likely out with a nice profit..but the fact remains that as long as that huge spread exists between Plat & Pal..Palladium will have to trim the difference...wonder if COIN will finally have a red day

Thanks, Pop
jumped on that PAL for 200 and grabbed anoher 100 of the TGB. thats leaves me with abot a 1000 to invest this month or dump in my IRA befor the april cut off or try and get into one of these IPO's comming up. any ideas appreciated, the board is doing better buy me then the damn financial advisor from met life.

Yo Tripster and others who already got an account open. I think I'm going to stop bullshitting now since I got my tax return back and jump in and give it a try (I've done lost money on other dumb shit so I don't consider this a waste). I'm trying to decide between sharebuilder and TDameritrade. Then I saw this site...

http://www.sogotrade.com

what's anybody's opinion on it?

I have a bit of advice for those looking to begin to start trading open brokerage accounts. Whoever you choose to invest with I personally think it is a good idea to have automatic deposits made into your account. Im sure there are other like my self who cant just drop thousands of dollars into the account every other day. If you have $25, 50, 100 a week automatically deducted from your checking or savings that adds up. And its better to have it there already so when great opportunities arise your not trying to rush and get money in there taking 1-3 days for funds to clear. Just my 2cents thinking of ways to contribute to this great thread. Much respect to all the mentors and all who contibute in anyway here.

Save some money for the VISA ipo and a resurgence of APPLE around fall.

Thanks jagu

yea thinking on that Visa now. as far as apple gonna wait till next month after the tournament and invest that money feel its gonna make a big bounce back later this year but not sure its hit its low. right now got to maintain a little on hand reserve for the Madness action, after i finish that will see where i stand.

Hold off on Apple until mid summer. I think it will go below or near $100 before it shoots back up to near $200 in Christmas. The fear of recession is keeping people away from these electronics. The new I phones will help revive Apple stock in the fall, so hold tight.:yes::cool:

I funded mine in an unconventional way, it's not for everybody. I have a healthy savings and 401k account, but I did not want to touch those accounts, so I sold all my cars and I put the proceeds into my brokerage account. I leased a reasonable car instead. I have made more than I have paid in lease payments this past year:lol::lol::lol:

Apple is the only stock that has raped my a little bit:angry:

I also want to give thanks and respect to Tripster et al for their work and contribution to this thread, I live by it.

Yeah, AAPL. seems to be lil iffy to me, the stock has for the first time in a LONG time become an iffy proposition. Remeber one thing, we're in a recession & APPLE produces relatively high end electronics. Their products cost some duckets & man while I know people buy them, lookig you struggling to keep up when Gas hits 4.00 in the summer, I doubt you're going to rush to buy some $500,Apple gizmo..plus , they've saturated the market, the curve is near met, everyone who wants ipod likely has it...iphone is still a novelty & other co's are chompin tryin to get a piece of that market...I'd lay low on apple...there are many great market prospects out there...

Those on the IPO tip...I'm telling you, keep your eyes on Inptrepid,..ViSA is nice an all, but man realize they coming to market at $15B, PLUS over-allotment!!, which could value them OUT the gate over $20B,...If you think they going to replicate Mastercard, youre wrong.. 500% increase would make them a $120B, company...i can't see that happening..

Man that COIN is a MONSTER....$16+ now..

Oh and you got to give it up to silver, got beaten down yesterday to bout $19.65/oz, and it's back up to $20.60..as Shaq would say, das Outstandin' lol

Gold 987.80 +2.44%
Platinum 2249.00 +1.08%
Palladium 554.00 +1.84%
Rhodium 9310.00 +0.32%

Rhodium, man pull up a chart of that run,,$200 to over $9k...
Palladium.....just had to go upwards folks...no way that spread stays that huge..

Sold "all" your cars! Damn peoples how many cars you had laying around? I must admit that was very unconventional but damn smart to make money with somethings that might have been depreciating anyway. Now you even have me thinking maybe now is a good time to empty out my jug of loose change.Congrads on your succesful investments. Peace.

LOL!!! I only had 2 cars I had a luxury car and a Toyota camry for everyday use. I had finished paying for them and they were just going to keep depreciating.

POP

Where can I research intrepid and what is their estimated day of release?

Jag...

I'm not sure what day they are dropping, They filed 4Q07, so I'm kind of glad the buzz is low on it, I don't recall them pricing, so that too is up in the air, I do know they are looking at a miniscule 100M IPO...i hope they drop with low amount of shares..would be great..

For reasearch, it's scattered, so I'd say hit a google search & also check out the web site & SEC filings on EDGAR.

They are profitable, they are growing, they are a US potash company...imagine that, most Potash co's are from the great white north..I like the growth prospect & the fact it's small & not getting too much buzz. It's not going to beome a Big 5,,but it will do very well, because its not coming into market BIG...unlike ole boy Visa...

Just to make sure I am on the right track, you're refering to this company.
http://www.247wallst.com/2008/02/amended-ipo-fil.html

Das the bad boy Jag.....the darn thing is there ain too much infor out there on this IPO, makes it a bit more appealing. PLUS....let's not forget to consider a buyout opportunity..POT & MOS have cash to spend.....

Intrepid Potash, Inc. is closer to an IPO as it filed an amended IPO filing this morning. The targeted proceeds from common stock issuance are not specified, however, it has applied to trade on the New York Stock Exchange. The underwriting group is listed as Goldman, Sachs & Co., Merrill Lynch & Co., and Morgan Stanley.

Intrepid Potash claims to be the largest potash producer in the United States and supplies an average of 8.5% of potash consumption in the U.S. annually and 1.5% globally. Potash is composed of potassium, one of three essential nutrients for agriculture. Significant barriers to entry exist in the industry because deposits are rare and geographically concentrated. Intrepid owns 5 potash production plants in New Mexico and Utah with the capacity to produce 1.2 million tons of potash each year. They plan to expand production by 370,000 tons per year over the next 5 years. Increased demand for potash, combined with a limited supply, recently increased prices dramatically. In the last 3 months, Intrepid saw prices increase by 80%, up to $397 per ton. They reported net sales of $140.1 million and net income of $23.1 million at an average of $185 per ton for the nine-month period ended September 30, 2007.

I thought about this but do they charge u the $10 or whateva ur site charges for each transaction? Cause this investing 5 at a time is killin me wit optionsxpress

Trip, I was looking to start investing and someone pointed me towards Vanguard. Plus my mother in law had it back in the day. What do you think about them? I'm not into day trading at all. I'm definately more conservative in my financial planning.

Jus to continue with the discussion on the starting blocks of getting in:
Build your account over time, If you can start with a lump some, great, if not build up a small lump & start your journey. The broker you pick, to me is important, but don't get caught up in that being a major hurdle. Pick one & move on, i reccomend Ameritrade, as to me they provide the most tools at a fair & resonable price. I agree w. Tip on alloting a small peice of your disposable income there on a monthly basis. People tend to think you need big bucks to make money on the market, to me that is the mentality of traders, you have to FIRST think as an ivestor, then later on think as a trader. Nothing comes fast, so patience will serve all well...open an account, pick a stock or two & invest in it for a few months..get a feel for the tools at your disposal. and always keep learning more & more. This is something that will always be there to utlize, more you know better off you'll be...
