Iron Man 3 to be Co-Produced in China

“We look forward to working alongside DMG to bring Iron Man to the Chinese marketplace in a significant way. We are confident that Marvel’s stories will continue to be enjoyed by Chinese audiences, and adding a local flavor, and working with our new local partner, will enhance the appeal and relevance of our characters in China’s fast-growing film marketplace,” said Rob Steffens, General Manager of Operations and Finance for Marvel Studios.

“Our collaboration with Disney and Marvel marks a milestone in the global entertainment landscape, as this signifies the first multi-billion dollar franchise to be produced between Hollywood and China,” said Dan Mintz, CEO of DMG Entertainment. “The 'Iron Man' franchise has been a major success worldwide, and we look forward to pushing the series to new heights with "Iron Man 3." The movie will further build upon its compelling storyline, and feature the hottest A-list stars, and spectacular action, which will resonate well both globally and in China, the second largest box office market in the world.”

Shooting is expected to commence in May in the United States and begin location filming in China in late summer 2012.

What kind of movie are you guys looking for??? It's based off of a cartoon, so how realistic can it be? I thought it was good, and it was waaayyyy better than number 2.

I do think Mary mark was a miscast, but he was much better in it then that over acting "cry for help" CAC that was in the first 3.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is based on a fictional comic books universe... Science Fiction... But Its about good story telling to where the suspension of disbelief is established. I can't watch TF and not scream BULLSHIT every 10 mins... I can with X-Men every now and than.. I didn't do it once with Cap 2 or Dark Knight

This.

No one is saying it has to be Citizen Kane, but damn, can Bay at least pretend to try to respect the intelligence of his audience? Can he at least pretend to try to have his stories follow any kind of logic?

Supposedly this is his last, so we shall see how much praise and or grief the next director gets

I love how folks try to get a spiritual connection with a fictional 30 plus foot alien robot

Let's not make Marvel perfect though. We had to suspend belief in Avengers when they all communicated with invisible ear pieces.

You think all communication devices gotta stick out your ear like Lt. Uhuru?

That's because there's a Spiritual story behind the history of the Transformers, the origin of their Planet, the hows and whys for the creation of their first 13 AUTOnomous-RoBOTS, the Revolution against the infiltrators, the Quintessons and the formation of the confederates who came to be known as Decepticons.

It's very Shakespearean. It could have been the next great Trilogy.
BAY dumb that shit down each movie using a generic Three Part structure.

I saw it earlier today, I liked it:dunno:

I'm in the "I knew what I was getting into" camp. Like Rock said, I think this is the best Transformers film since the first one.

Yes this is coming from an almost life-long Transformers fan. Been a fan since 1984 (when I was 6), cried in the movie theaters in 1986 when Prime died (when I was 8), said "WTF" when I first saw Prime as a gorilla on "Beast Wars"(to later come and love the series), scratched my head to "Beast Machines", actually liked "Robots in Disguise", didn't like "Armada", hated "Energon", thought "Cybertron" had its moments, loved "Animated"(had a lot of G1 references), and loved "Prime".

Have all of the Marvel, Dreamwave, And IDW books:yes:

and collect them. Mostly collect MISB and MIB. Just a few I already had unboxed

Transformers films are in the same camp as "The Expendables" and "The Fast and the Furious" series. You go to and watch for what they are.

I totally agree. The series could have been a lot better. But for what us old fans have lost due to storytelling, a whole new generation of fans are created by these films. Transformers, if we like it or not, are at the peak of their popularity ever in the history of the franchise.

I remember playing the Transformers game on Commodore 64 when I was little:yes:
Transformers-Commodore-64-Front.jpg

Still got the Commodore but don't have the game anymore:(

I never knew they made a commodore 64 game. Of course this looks ridiculous by today's standards but for 1985 it wasn't too bad.

Yes! That's all we had! And let me to you, the dude's flying skills in that video are 2nd to none! It was nowhere near that easy to fly!

And :smh: at Grimlock not speaking. That's criminal.
That was kind of rough area to go into. If Grimlock came out talking like he did in G1, everyone would say that Bay is picking on the mentally challenged (thinking about that last episode of Boondocks). If he came out talking proper or sophisticated, us older fans would have said "bullshit"! For as long as he was in the film I don't mind him not talking.

Box Office: 'Transformers 4' Nabs First $100M Weekend of the Summer
Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction scored the biggest opening weekend of 2014, earning a strong $100 million in America and $301.3m worldwide in its initial frame. The Paramount Pictures (a division of Viacom, Inc.) release was a bit frontloaded (2.4x) but on merely on the lower end of reasonable expectations after its whopping $41.6m opening day (also a record for the year). The Stanley Tucci/Kelsey Grammer drama bested the $95m debut of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Of note, this is the first Transformers film to open on a Friday. The other three entries all debuted on Tuesday or Wednesday, meaning that much of the “must-see” demographic was on to other things by Friday. Transformers had a sky-high 3.11 weekend multiplier ($70.5 million Fri-Sun/$22.6m Fri), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen had a 2.9x weekend multiplier after scoring a near-record $62m Wednesday ($108.9m/$36.7m), and Transformers: Dark of the Moon had a 2.9x as well ($97.8m/$32.9m). As such, a 2.4x weekend multiplier on a straight Fri-Sun debut isn’t too bad considering the size of the numbers.

The film played 64% male and 58% 25 years-and older. The film played just 27% under 18 years old, which is amusing for a big-budget film based on a toy line about robots that turn into cars. The film earned $10.7 million in IMAX alone (portions of the film were shot with a relatively new IMAX 3D camera), the second biggest June debut after Man of Steel last year ($13.5m). 9 of the 10 biggest grossing theaters were IMAX, because duh. It also earned an additional $7m on other Premium Large Format screens, meaning it earned about 18% of its gross via large-format venues. The film is also doing well overseas, having earned $30m in China on its first day and $90m on its opening weekend, a record for a foreign film playing in China. The film was a Chinese co-production and featured a China-set finale and a supporting role for Bingbing Li, so big business in China was all-but-guaranteed. The film’s new worldwide total is $301.3m, including $27.3m worldwide in IMAX alone.

So yeah, the addition of Mark Wahlberg and those Dino Bots seems to have fended off much of the franchise fatigue for the moment. The only question is where it goes from here. Yes, everyone whines about how terrible these films are, but by virtue of their accessibility and guaranteed surface-level entertainment value, they are a relatively low-risk proposition. You want giant robots smashing each other for 2.75 hours? You get exactly that, so it’s not hard to imagine even those on the fence eventually saying “Why not?” and seeing it just once, especially as the 4th of July holiday lacks a stereotypical tent-pole release this year.

Putting aside that it’s not really appropriate for kids (there is an extended discussion of Texas’s “Romeo and Juliet” laws), it will be an easy consensus choice for big families and groups heading to the movies over the July 4th holiday, which will lessen the second weekend drop. That’s of course why you open on a weekend before a holiday instead of the holiday itself. In terms of multipliers, the last two sequels earned about 3.7x their respective Fri-Sun debuts, but they both big chunks of change ($64m for Dark of the Moon, $91m for Revenge of the Fallen) before heading into the regular weekend. 3.7x gives the fourth film $370m domestic, which seems a bit high even with the lack of competition for the next two weeks.

The prior three films respectively earned around 2x their full holiday debuts ($155m/$319m, $200m/$409m, $160m/$352m), which seems way too low. So, let’s split the difference, give it a 2.85x multiplier and say $285m domestic, with the caveat that Paramount will get it over the $300m hump if it gets close enough. That’s somewhat speculative of course, so we’ll have a better idea after next weekend.

There were no other new wide releases set to open against Transformers: Age of Extinction. Begin Again, a Mark Ruffalo/Keira Knightley directed by John Carney (Once) debuted on five screens courtesy of the Weinstein Company and earned $148,325 for a for a solid $29,665 per-screen average. Lionsgate also debuted Dinesh D’Souza’s America: Imagine the World Without Her, a documentary/editorial from the guy who brought us 2016: Obama’s America. The film earned just $39,000 on three screens, but it will be interesting to watch as it expands to 1,000 screens over the July 4th weekend. Variety’s Joe Leydon reviewed it here.

The best film of the weekend is Snowpiercer, Bong Joon-ho‘s superb post-apocalyptic adventure film. The Radius-TWC release, starring Chris Evans, Octavia Spencer, Tilda Swinton, and John Hurt, debuted on eight screens nationwide this weekend. The film earned $162,127 for the weekend, which is good ($20,265 per-screen) considering it wasn’t exactly playing in the biggest and best big city theaters, but not indicative of any breakout potential quite yet. It expands a bit wider next weekend. Mark Hughes reviewed it for Forbes here.

The rest is holdover news, and there actually is some this weekend despite the Transformers domination. Of note, Sony's Amazing Spider-Man 2 was finally dragged, kicking and screaming in protest, across the $200 million mark this weekend. Heaven Is For Real crossed $90m domestic this weekend, a stunning achievement for the $12m Greg Kinnear religious drama. And 22 Jump Street earned $15.4m on its third weekend (-44%) bringing its domestic cume to $139.8m, which will put the Jonah Hill/Channing Tatum sequel over the $138m domestic total for 21 Jump Street in just 17 days. It’s also earned $194m worldwide, meaning it will easily make the cut in terms of all-time top-grossing (live-action) comedy sequels.

Also crossing $200 million by weekend’s end is Walt Disney's DIS +1.01% Maleficent, as the Angelina Jolie fantasy crossed said milestone today, if only by a little. It ended its fifth weekend with $202m domestic after grossing $8.4m. It has earned a whopping $585m worldwide. X-Men: Days of Future Past earned $3.3m for the weekend for a $223.3m domestic cume. The Fox sequel has now earned $714m worldwide, making it the biggest global grosser of 2014 at least for the next 2-3 weeks. Warner Bros.’ (a division of Time Warner, Inc.) Jersey Boys earned $7.6m, down a mediocre 47% on its second weekend, for a $27.3m domestic cume for the $40m Clint Eastwood musical drama.

Edge of Tomorrow took a Transformers hit, earning $5.2 million (-47%) and bringing its domestic cume to $84.1m. The Tom Cruise sci-fi actioner has earned $314m worldwide. Godzilla earned $1m (-47%) for a $197m domestic total. It’s basically done, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Warner keeps it in theaters and drags it across the $200m mark by its tail. It’s also earned $480m worldwide. Universal’s A Million Ways to Die In the West earned another $512k for a $41.7m domestic total. Neighbors earned another $740k for a new $147.2m domestic total. The $18m comedy has earned $242m worldwide.

A24′s Obvious Child expanded to 196 screens and earned $555,000 for its trouble ($2,835-per). The Jenny Slate comedy has now earned $1.2m. Last weekend’s box office champ, Think Like A Man Too, earned $10.4m on its second weekend, down a sharp 67%. Still, the $24m Kevin Hart-and-ensemble romantic comedy has now grossed $48.1m, doubling its budget. It’s a quick-kill, but it’s still a hit. The Fault in Our Stars crossed $100m early last week and pulled in $4.8m on its fourth weekend and now has $109.5m domestic and a stunning $195.2m worldwide for the $12m Shailene Woodley cancer drama.

Finally, DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon 2 earned $13.1m on its third weekend (-47%), for a $121m domestic total. It’s still running about 4% behind Kung Fu Panda 2, which “disappointed” with $165m domestic before earning $665m worldwide. How to Train Your Dragon 2 is still looking at $155m-$160m domestic, but we’ll see how it flies overseas (it’s at $229m worldwide thus far).

That’s it for this weekend. Next weekend is the July 4th holiday, which sees Melissa McCarthy’s Tammy from Warner Bros., the horror film Deliver Us From Evil from Sony/Screen Gems, and the kid-friendly “found footage” adventure Earth to Echo from Relativity. Also of note, America is expanding to 1,000 screens and the Roger Ebert documentary Life Itself debuts in limited release and VOD from Magnolia. In the meantime, instead of whining about how Transformers represents the demise of cinema, go find something better (Edge of Tomorrow, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Fault in Our Stars, Obvious Child, Snowpiercer, etc.).
