The Zimmerman Trial: Justice for Trayvon! (Let's discuss it)

http://madamenoire.com/284037/rachel-jeantel-who-we-should-really-be-ashamed-of/ Sorry Colin Powell....

Rachel Jeantel & Who We Should Really Be Ashamed Of...

Rachel Jeantel is a reminder that even in our righteous claims for justice, there is sort of a sad realization of just how much we perpetuate the very things that we claim we are against.

I often wonder what would our collective response to this tragedy have been if Martin wasn’t the baby-faced boy we had seen in pictures. What if he had a neck tattoo, baby dreadlocks and gold teeth? What if his linguistic patterns included a bunch of vowel splitting and “G” dropping? What if he rolled his eyes a lot and was known for speaking in an aggressive manner and tone? Would our convictions about George Zimmerman’s guilt have been less strong? Would folks have marched for justice or made George Zimmerman Wanted Poster-memes as their avatars; would they have taken “selfies” of ourselves in hoodies, holding a can of Arizona Ice Tea and Skittles?

The more optimistic part of me would like to believe that we would be just as vigilant. The realist in me knows differently. I don’t understand the lack of empathy we have for Jeantel – actually I do. She is everything that makes some of us cringe in front of white America. She is an uncouth, abrasive, dark skinned, overweight black woman with a weave and an attitude. As far as some of us are concerned, she is confirmation of everything that “they” think negatively about us. And for that we grit our teeth and wave our fists about how she is making us look bad.

However she did not ask nor volunteer to represent us. If not for bad fate, she would be another nameless black girl that we passed indiscriminately by every single day on the streets of America – unconcerned about her past or her future. And yet for circumstances outside of her control, she was plucked from her insular existence and thrust into the center stage of a highly profiled murder trial – and worse under the scrutinizing eye of people, our people, who went onto social networking sites to make fun of her weight; her color; who compared her to the fictional character Precious and other unwarranted attacks. I can understand why Jeantel is a defiant witness. As bad as she is getting it from the defense it pales in comparison to virtual beat down she is getting from us.

It can’t be easy, sitting in the same seat for hours, hashing and rehashing the same story you’ve told probably dozens of times before – to different people, in different venues at different intervals – and having to tell it again, this time to highly-skilled lawyers badgering you, trying to poke holes in every single utterance you make, fishing for ways to twist your words into gotcha moments. I know I would certainly get flustered and angry if I had to explain in front of a room full of people I don’t know why my relationship status with the victim was “complicated” – all the while wondering why that is even relevant to the facts of the case to begin with. And to her credit, the amount of resolve it must have taken to not respond more belligerently at the line of questioning about why she did not want to attend Martin’s funeral.

To which she tearfully responded, “You got to understand, you the last person to talk to the person and he died on the phone after you talked to him — you got to understand what I’m trying to tell you…I’m the last person, you don’t know how it felt. You think I really want to go see the body after I just talked to him?”

But in our haste to condemn and disassociate ourselves for what is nothing short of truthful emotions, we forget that she is hurting too – way more than any of us sitting at home watching the trial on television or in front of our computers. That this, for her, is not some political rallying cry she can put a hoodie on or rock a nifty slogan on buttons about to make it all feel better. Just like Martin, his parents and Zimmerman, her life changed that faithful night too. And for the rest of her life, she will have to live the memory – and probably guilt – of what happened. And not just what happened the night in question but during this trial, where people, particularly her own people, treated her worse than the man that is on trial for the actual crime. And quite honestly, that is what we should feel ashamed the most about here.

Making this deeper than it is. Truth is the girl is borderline retarded. End of story.

did you even read what i typed? i did attempt to explain it.

she just testified on national tv. what the fuck are you talking about?

but she did help the family. so you're arguing a non-point. literally. everybody doesn't want to be under that kind of life-changing scrutiny. she's going to have to deal with the effects of this trial for the rest of her life. some people dont want any parts of that shit. you niggas just want to be mad at her. that says alot about some of you.

Like I said, I'm sure we all went to school with a knuckleheaded bird like her; impatient, bad attitude, rude, self-centered, etc...her character isn't exactly helping much along with her testimony b/c nobody can take her seriously. She was not just a witness but Trayvon's friend, in the long term, it shouldn't matter since there's other witnesses, but she can't do much good. It ain't like it's the prosecution that wants her back, it's the defense...and for good reason.

HA!

I won't start a riot...

I'm talking about in the begining when Trayvon's momma kept calling her house asking her to come and talk to her lawyer "crump" in order to help build their case. Remember Sanford police dropped case, and all but moved on. Trayvon's mother had to push (even while going through the shock of finding out her son was killed and dispelled like trash) to get a lawyer and contact people involved. The chick admitted that she was dodging her cause she didn't want to be around anybody crying in front of her. WTF?

Even if she's young, even if she's slow no one around her could tell her do the right thing? Even when she called her mom in Hati, she told her momma to tell Trayvon's momma NO. Ya'll see childish mentallity. I see cruel indifference to the plight of that family.

I'm not worried about crackers, or what they think, my anguish is with Treyvon's family and people who call themselves "friends" too busy to help.

No one hate Black people like your fellow Black people.

This 19 yr old girl is doing all she can to tell the truth and help this case and you fools in here are calling her retarded, saying she got attitude, etc etc. What none of you people are doing is trying to support her. Like you dudes would do better in her place cause all of you are better than any lawyer on Law & Order.

Lot of self hate in here....especially of dark skinned Black women.

yeah...ok bruh. fuck the fact that she's traumatized by the events that unfolded. she's supposed to quickly get past all of that..otherwise she's "cruel and indifferent". damn. :smh:

Fuck off. She wasn't a poor witness at all. You dummies still keep thinking this is a law and order episode.

i guess my issues is that there is a large group of black people passing judgment on her pretty unfairly. for example...calling her a "knuckleheaded bird like her; impatient, bad attitude, rude, self-centered, etc." all the while, giving the white dude a pass for doing his best to demean her and take advantage of her weakness with language usage. sure, i would love if she was more articulate and could be more helpful to the prosecution, but that's their fault for not properly preparing her as a witness. it's clear they failed to large degree with that and its not her fault. but to watch black people talk so horribly about her, man this shit is sad to watch because its fear of white thinking at best and self hatred at worst. either way...it aint all good.

btw...she did help the prosecutions case. she came off as real and unrehearsed. and while it may have been embarrassing to you that she wasnt more articulate with her words, it doesn't mean that her testimony wont help at all. some of you cats really need to relax on the negativity.

Yeah raise her in the hood to a be a mole for the drug dealers. You are so stupid.

Exactly.

I've had my fill of some black people's acceptance of bullshit.

I don't even like white people, and prefer to live around them...

...'cause if nothing else, we share the desire to avoid the riffraff.

I'm thinking about packing my mom up, and sending her to S. Charlotte, 'cause these motherfuckers won't stay out your yard stealing, and don't even think about asking them to keep the noise down DURING SLEEPING HOURS. :hmm: Prepare for death threats for asking someone to respect their neighbors.

FOH.

"Fuck off" what you mad about? She your sister? Damn, chill out.

You know damn well the defense wants her back and you know why, they can pick her apart and help the Zimmerman's defense way more than the prosecution. She can't do anything else to help Martin's case, but she'll be back for prosecution to pick apart. Don't act like you can't see that just cuz that's not what you want to believe. She's a great distraction for them.

Peace bro, but HELLO the cracker is the defense what do you think he was going to do? Of course he's going to attack her, of course he's going rile her up, it's his job. Cross exam is always where they try to control the witness and by proxy the jury.

A bad attitude can sway a jury and effect your message. I do think she was 100% truthful but her attitude could turn off a jury already stuffed full of crackers. I want Zimmerman in jail or dead not free because some biased jurer says "her attitude made her unreliable".

Bingo. You can be dumb, but the attitude? Fuck.

Her testimony speaks to the intent of Trayvon and how he would have expressed that intent had he intended to initiate confrontation. She is saying he was the victim and part being pursued and has he planned to confront Zimmerman he would have articulated that to her based on the exchange they were having.

absolutely that is what she is saying. and certainly what she is implying. unfortunately, that is only her assumption and suggestion.

the larger example of assumption is her interpretation of a "bump" on trayvon's mobile phone headset microphone as "wet grass", "rolling around", and most incredible of all, the defendant "on top of" trayvon martin.

how could she discern their relative position even if the microphone itself had made contact with the ground? prone v. standing?

Disagree again. Nothing she was dishonest about was material to the present case nor does it speak to her credibility as a ear witness the night of the murder.

i stated before that i believe most of what she's testified to. i would've preferred her responses been more lean and without (what i estimated to be) embellishment. as you know, more austere testimony leaves less to be picked at later.

These sorry ass muthafuckas think that all black areas are the hood......

cotdamn I guess anyone can pay $10 nowadays and be a member.........

Yall dumbasses need to go fuckin read a book and learn something about black america.....

There is a black middle class that doesn t live in the fuckin hood.....

dumbasses

well guess who is to blame if a witness is not ready to testify? the prosecution. if you want to be mad at someone, be mad at them. its their job to make sure she understands how to conduct herself. but her attitude is not the end all be all. what she says has just as much merit. not to mention that this is not a jury of all whites and there are no white men at all.

shit, man...i want to see this bastard fry, too. but collectively we've got to calm down a little bit. even the court analysts aren't castigating her the way a lot black folks are. she didn't sink this case, man. it wasn't that bad. seriously.

Who's giving the white dude (attorney) a pass exactly? He's doing his job! lol He knows she can possibly crack, he knows having her look bad can sway people to the defense. That's elementary bruh. But my 8 year old niece and 15 y/o nephew has more composure than her. It's obvious this Jeantel brawd's got an attitude and obviously the defense wants to use that in their favor.

Plus I ain't even concerned with the way she articulates, it's specifically what she is saying and her body language and overall immaturity. Believe or not, there are plenty of 19 year old (and younger) brothas & sistas that know how to act in a courtroom bruh.

No bruh, every young black person under 20 is slow with a bad attitude. How dare you demand more from our youth. You need to fall back bruh. :smh:

Too many of you make excuses for bad behavior. Excuses only create more dysfunction.

Come on man; not one of us in here doesn't wish that she was able to present herself better, including those of us who thought she was truthful. She definitely showed attitude, and while I'm not gonna call the girl retarded, she didn't seem to be very bright. No hate there, just observation. It's a trial, and she's a witness, so supporting her isn't really what this is about... I personally support Trayvon, and for all her truthfulness, I wish she could have come off better on the stand. I can tell you for sure that most people would do better than her on the stand, because I've watched many trials, and she was pretty much the worst in terms of demeanor and attitude.

During the Jodi Arias trial, her first expert witness (60ish year old white male PhD Richard Samuels) was mocked, ridiculed, and ripped to shreds after his cross examination by the prosecution, because he gave inconsistent testimony and got caught in a few untruths that had nothing to do with the actual murder. Dude's career will probably never recover. He was educated, very well spoken, and mostly kept his cool, although he got flustered a few times. I bring all that up to say that criticism of this chick was not something that is reserved for her (and nothing to do with her skin color... there was another dark skinned black chick on the stand Wednesday morning and she wasn't great, but way better than this girl). The trial is a big topic on this board, unlike the Arias trial, so we're all discussing, but that's just what happens when a witness is up on the stand and not presenting themselves in the best way.

edit: see the richard samuels guy here being made a fool of for context:

I missed a large part of the spanish speaking woman's testimony, but from what I heard, her story played well for the prosecution.

Thank you!! Having the blinders on won't help us at all. People are equating being critical of her to being dismissive of the entire black American condition or some shit. I won't sit here and excuse her shitty attitude or her poor communication skills. Someone who can log online and use Twitter to tweet some of the bullshit I've seen her tweet clearly has the capacity to conduct herself better.
