The standard rate at Black barbershops is now $35-$40

My sons barber charges $20, he was getting that from me when I added tip, no way I’m taking 40 out the bank to tip $5 on a $20 cut, if I have extra cash, I’ll tip.

I shave my own head nightly, so I’m saving there

Learned to cut my hair after I left working in the Pentagon about 10 years ago. There was a black guy in the barbershop that was great.
Much cheaper in the long run to just purchase barbershop level clippers and do it yourself.
Perfect time to learn since most folks are working from home so folks won't see any fucked up linings.

Which clippers you use?

Been cutting my own hair since 09; when my barber went up to $20. I use to do my own line ups since I was in high school, but YouTube taught me the rest. Since then I've given myself dark & light caesars, taper fades, flat tops, and mohawks.

Spend money on clippers! Don't cheap out on them and definitely don't get them joints you see at Walmart or your local pharmacy/grocery stores.

All you really need is some good T-outliners, barber quality clippers (think Oster Fast Feed, Oster Classic 76, Andis Fademasters, Wahl Magic Clip, Wahl Senior, Andis Masters are staples in any barbershop), and some MAGNETIC GUARDS. Don't get the regular clip on guards because they fall off or loosen over time...

I was using some plastic clip on guards once and wasn't paying attention to how loose they were... in the middle of me cutting my hair the guard fell off and well... let's just say my boys called me PATCHES for month :smh:

When you first start you gotta commit to it... be good and ready to cut all your hair off because you just might fuck it up... could spend $200-$300 on everything, but with practice, time and patience it pays for itself quickly

I went in for a regular haircut and my barber said "$30".
Although I had the money, I damn near fainted as my regular shape-ups were only $15 when I had locs for almost 26 years.
Now, I'd like to maintain having a fresh look consistently but I'd rather put that extra money I'm spending into buying my own clippers. I just need to find a dope ass tutorial on cutting my hair now.

Ive been cutting my own hair for over 20 years now. I was a pretty good barber and I did go to cosmetology school for a while so i guess I had a curve. Same time I have 3 best friends who are barbers, so I used to get tips from them and a discount on all of the top notch tools. The tools mean everything and having them adjusted right is the key. If you buy a trimmer or some clipper, buy the adjustment tool that comes as a package. If not, look for blades on trimmers that come zero gapped already. Even if you go to a shop, every man should own at least some Andis trimmers just in case you gotta hook yourself up in an emergency. Your barber will usually adust then to perfection for little or no charge.

I got a message in my Booksy app one of the barbers I used to go to has raised his rates starting next week.

Kids $40
Adults $50
