The league is so TV driven, nobody really wants to see a top team get knocked off early so some scrub team can get airtime. The 7 game format in the 1st round protects your really good teams from getting in an elimination situation early. They can slip a game or 2 and still make it out the 1st. With the 5 game format a slip up or 2 and you're finished.

you cant have two starters out in game 1 home against the bulls
