The most confusing bit about Kanye West for me...

I'm convinced something happened from 2005 to now that elevated this guy much faster than his actual talent could catch onto. Don't know what but it's good to know I'm not the only one that sees it..
You're ignorant of his work obviously and I just posted a video above to help fill you in.

I don't have him top 5 producers... he might not even make top 10 if I'm being honest.

Off the top:

Dre
Premier
Pete Rock
Diamond D
Rza
Havoc
Timbo
Swizzy
Beatnuts
Pharrell
Buckwild
Rockwilder
J Dilla
Sermon
Hi-tek....

Guarantee I'm missing some too
o_O
yeah - Kanye' catalog says you are just wrong...

there are only 4 maybe 5 producers on your list that have a better catalog than ye

genius is:

stevie wonder, michael jackson, prince, bob marley, marley marl, rod temperton, quincy jones, herbie hancock,
chick corea, miles davis, public enemy, babyface, teddy riley, luther vandrioss, frankie knuckles, all the pioneers of hiphop.
Bird, Dizzy, Coltrane, Puente, Keith n Hank Shocklee, QTip, Nas... and unfortunately - Ye too

I didn't miss the point, I'm just not getting into an esoteric with you about general geniuses. Let's stay on point, you clearly don't think Kanye is a musical genius. Well here is one aspect of his genius....

So he can make beats and flip vocals, something Just Blaze was doing at the time already. There's a wealth of folks that can make beats, doesn't make them geniuses. Everything after College Dropout was average and shit to me. 808, Graduation, Dark Fantasies... not memorable by any stretch of the imagination.

So what's left as far as his genius goes? His lyrics?

Is Kanye West even a hip hop artist anymore??? I posit that dude's been doing a type of performance art that has little if anything to do with hip-hop for a while now.

Many people considered Andy Kaufman a comedian or stand up comedian back in the day...here's his idea of comedy

now is that stand up comedy or is that some kind of performance art thats KINDA barely funny in an absurd way...IMO kanye's doing the same thing only with rap music.

We'll agree to disagree cause as I told the homey above, his catalog isn't memorable to me and alotta people for that matter. Average and shit at best which was the purpose of the initial question.

College Dropout was his best and only real solid cut where he played up to his potential and then started to slide down the proverbial hill.

Well, I can tell you really don't want to know why he's a genius, you're just on a hater-thon. I'm out, happy hating.

"If I don't like it, I don't like it, that don't mean that I'm hating..."

But cool. You must be of the younger ilk that equate don't like to hate. If I was truly on some hater shit, I wouldn't be sitting here asking the question EVERYONE seems to have. I ask cause I genuinely wanna know but again, appreciate the comments and the effort. Be easy.

Man, your mind is made up, though. You're pretending to want to know, you're being disingenuous and you know it. If you really wanted to know, you could google it.

He's a genius at picking a whore to knock up and wife.

If you ask that nigga whats his greatest accomplishment he would say Kim Kardashian.

and those are just Hip Hop producers.....man there are so many more that i could put above Kanye.

How am I being disingenuous and pretending? I've not told one lie on here, simply how I feel and think. Is it because it's in contrast to what you may feel? All I'm asking is for the pro Kanye crowd to sell me his genius because I, alongside a slew of people, don't see it. I can't google the opinions of people.

Thats why we're all here. And if you can't sell it to me, that's ok too. No harm no foul.

"Sell you his genius"? .....Homie if you don't see it, cool. & if you don't know how to discern & sift info from google, cool. I can't do your research for you.

Not sure I'd call him a genius...but one thing he shares with geniuses is weirdness..if you've ever really checked out one, they're usually weird as shit...prolly cuz they have so much talent in one area, theyre lacking in common sense.

Musically....he's made great work. That fact that he somehow became marketable for his subject matter when others around the time couldn't spoke to his genius. Earlier in his career he spoke to a lot of people. People could realte to him. Only people that relate to him now are Thots or Kardashians now.

He's not a genius, he can make some hot beats but there was nothing so inventive that he was ahead of his time. He was skilled at chopping and making arrogant and introspective songs. He's not next level
At that time though...after Kanye dropped you started hearing a lot more songs structured like his. He paved the way for a lot of cats after him and influenced a lot. I'm not sure if there is a J. Cole or Drake if Kanye didn't come before them.

'Ye was one of the first dudes who I seen unplogetically be from a good home and admit to going to college. He made just being a normal guy back in at a time when you had crunk, G-Unit, Dipset, etc.

Geniuses don’t need to remind people or mention it, in fact they are such perfectionists they are never satisfied and don’t see themselves that way. Prince, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones have never called themselves this. Kanye can’t even play 1 instrument.
Good point,I considered him a musical genius until you mentioned the instruments

he was a “breath of fresh air” and indeed influential to some...doesn’t equate to being a genius...that’s why so many ppl are disappointed now...put dude on too high a pedestal

Look, I don't like the muthafucka no more myself but let's don't play dude like he didn't make a mark in this game. That's the only reason he's even able to even frustrate people now if it wasn't for his music career. This dude stood out on a label that featured State Property, Dipset, Jay, Bleek, etc. He was never suppose to be popular or even relevant.

see my post above...making a mark in the game doesn’t necessarily equate to being a genius

I mean I don't even value the word "genius" to begin with. I'm not sure who even determines that. In Kanye's case....he self anointed himself as a "genius". Who determines who's a musical genius or who isn't? Rolling Stone? XXL?

Naw...it doesn't. Musically its debatable. College Dropout and Late Registration are two of the best albums to drop in the past 20 years. Maybe that's' lowering expectations on the culture. But those albums stand up with some of the better albums in hip hop.

well that’s kind of the problem...ppl throw that word around far too easily esp. when it comes to entertainment
Yeah but I mean what determine a musical genius? For me I'd consider Prince one. Is Michael Jackson considered a musical genius? OP says Dr. Dre and Snoop are......if Dre is considered a musical genius?

Yep. Ali was the only person I could think of that self labeled himself as the greatest, but in his defense boxing isn't as subjective as music.

A true genius isn't dwelling on what they've done, they're obsessed with what they haven't done.
