When did Kanye West become this self proclaimed genius? Maybe I'm old-school, maybe I'm out of touch, but in the era where we celebrate mediocrity with such vigor, when did Kanye's platform become as big as people make it seem?

Because I simply don't see it.

I even hesitate to call him a "musical genius" and maybe that's a testament to growing up at about the same time he did, making beats on an MPC, making music as everyone did in the 90s pretty much, I never really felt like he was the greatest to ever do it. He has put out some good albums and some great tracks but that's about it.

When I think of people more deserving of that title, Dr. Dre is in position for such accolades, alongside a Snoop Dogg or a Biggie or even a Tupac. Jay-Z is simply in a world of his own, but listening to Kanye speak, he has this arrogance as if he's in this category with these legends, and I wanna when this took place and how? This guy has recently been comparing himself to Michael Jackson, Prince, Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, Albert Einstein and countless others who actually deserved the genius title.

Comical and mistaken.

When did we, as a hip hop community raise this guy to those levels? Or did we? Is this all just media hype?

What's your opinion on this? Do you think he's as good as he or others may believe, or are you as confused as I am?

Every crazy person thinks their a genius. He's obviously delusional & heavily medicated at all times.
I suppose. Dude needs his mom back something fierce cause it feels like he's trying to fill that hole with all this shit and self prophecy.

Dude literally said, "I'm Tupac..."

Nah bruh. You ain't.

Geniuses don’t need to remind people or mention it, in fact they are such perfectionists they are never satisfied and don’t see themselves that way. Prince, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones have never called themselves this. Kanye can’t even play 1 instrument.

He’s done some good things, but not a musical genius. Be he is good at what he does.

He is an extreme narcissist. So his accomplishments have fed right into his ego. I never considered him a musical genius in comparison to other hip hop producers. He’s not even in my top 5 hip hop producers much less in overall producers.

Curtis Mayfield is a musical genius, IMO. So is Quincy Jones. Fela Kuti is next level. So my bar is real high and very few hip hop producers comes into that realm.

You are akin to your name sir. Absolute mint.

To quote one Mos Def: "pure power don't power trip..."

Success doesn't have that ceiling that this guy thinks he's found or finding or whatever. Perfectionists do it til it's perfect then one day realize every ones calling them a genius and they're still not satisfied.

They humbly push on.

That's TRUE genius.

Right.

And again I'm not discrediting the man completely. He's put out some pretty good work. I've got college drop out in rotation in the whip right now. But he for certain isnt of the genius that he thinks he is.

Quincy Jones is musical genius bar none.

Funny, I was literally thinking this earlier this week.
Who crowned this nigga and when?
Fam... I'm still trying to sort that out.

2 good albums and a comfortable shoe and this nigga is crowned the king of hip hop or pop or the world or whatever?

Pffff....

You're conflating being humble and being a genius, when they have nothing to do with one another. There are a lot of genius loud mouth assholes & there a lot of geniuses who don't say anything about themselves & then there are geniuses in between those extremes.

genius is:

stevie wonder, michael jackson, prince, bob marley, marley marl, rod temperton, quincy jones, herbie hancock,
chick corea, miles davis, public enemy, babyface, teddy riley, luther vandross, frankie knuckles, all the pioneers of hiphop.

Here you go bro... here are some threads from 6 years ago on the matter.... There were quite a few kool aid drinking Yeezus disciples present too.

Fair point, but it's very rare pure genius has to push its own agenda.

Usually genius speaks for itself.

Because sometimes success depends on believing you have the biggest dick in the room.

Of his two biggest celebrity mentors, one calls himself Jayhovah and the other is famous for being the daughter of an OJ lawyer with a big ass.

Not when it comes to facts. Again it's no plot to bring this man down. Just trying to understand where his self proclaimed "genius" comes from.
Not when it comes to facts? You obviously want your genius in a nice neat palatable package, but the fact is genius is not like that all of the time.

I'll bite. State your case. Name some loud geniuses minus humility and self proclamation..

wow...

that is tough, I'd have to really think on that one
I don't have him top 5 producers... he might not even make top 10 if I'm being honest.

Off the top:

Dre
Premier
Pete Rock
Diamond D
Rza
Havoc
Timbo
Swizzy
Beatnuts
Pharrell
Buckwild
Rockwilder
J Dilla
Sermon
Hi-tek....

Guarantee I'm missing some too

State your case about Kanye NOT being genius. You just don't like him as a person, that's all. That's nothing to be concerned about.
You clearly missed the point of the post and answered a question with a question.

All good. Appreciate your comments.

I was asking some music heads this earlier. I've always thought he was a dope ass producer but there are a lot of dope producers.
I'm convinced something happened from 2005 to now that elevated this guy much faster than his actual talent could catch onto. Don't know what but it's good to know I'm not the only one that sees it..

I didn't miss the point, I'm just not getting into an esoteric with you about general geniuses. Let's stay on point, you clearly don't think Kanye is a musical genius. Well here is one aspect of his genius....
