The most confusing bit about Kanye West for me...

Musical Geniuses:

Duke Ellington, James Brown, Fela Kuti, Prince, Michael, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Eric Dolphy, Bob Marley, George Clinton/PFunk/Bootsy, Curtis Mayfield, Roy Ayers, Dizzy, Charlie Parker, David Bowie, David Axelrod, Quincy Jones, Zappa, Herbie Hancock, The Beatles/George Martin, The Beach Boys, Hendrix, Coltrane, Marvin Gaye, Aretha

At that time though...after Kanye dropped you started hearing a lot more songs structured like his. He paved the way for a lot of cats after him and influenced a lot. I'm not sure if there is a J. Cole or Drake if Kanye didn't come before them.

'Ye was one of the first dudes who I seen unplogetically be from a good home and admit to going to college. He made just being a normal guy back in at a time when you had crunk, G-Unit, Dipset, etc.
j cole and Drake are nothing like Kanye and are better lyricists. Uh, there has always been non gangsters making music- will Smith, tribe, pharcyde....he just had hotter beats.

I never said who was better. I said he paved the way for them. If Drake came out in 1994 niggas would say he's corner. And Will and Tribe were in the game long before. I'm talking about when KANYE came out. Will and Tribe wasn't record. Who fit that mold then?

Late Registration is his best album. Kanye is/ was a hip hop guru, but he's stood on the shoulders of giants, who laid a foundation. I'd say he had a genius run from College Dropout to whatever. But he's been wack for a while now. I'd call him a creative, resourceful genius up to a certain point. Like a great coordinator. But not a "musical genius." Never that.:smh:

So he can make beats and flip vocals, something Just Blaze was doing at the time already. There's a wealth of folks that can make beats, doesn't make them geniuses. Everything after College Dropout was average and shit to me. 808, Graduation, Dark Fantasies... not memorable by any stretch of the imagination.

So what's left as far as his genius goes? His lyrics?
What makes Kanye stand out is his creativity and open-mindedness to the creative process. Musically, he steps outside of boundaries of convention and genre to reconstruct musical elements into good modern art. For someone who doesn't play an instrument, his ear is well-developed. He has an unusually good sense of composition, spatially speaking - relative to your average hip-hop producer. I went into the video @World B Free posted with somewhat of an anti-Kanye bias. I came out with a bit more appreciation for his musical talents.

I'm still not ready to call him a musical genius though (he's DEFINITELY not one outside of music), and I think he shouldn't be so quick to refer to himself as one. I think that term is thrown around too loosely, in general. Kanye is one hell of a musical collage artist though.

True. He is influential, but with this amount of people calling him out (specially Black folk), he shit is getting put in check.

If anything, this seems to be another talking point for the right. You know, the black guy that agrees with their opinion.

From what I have seen, people has been calling him out, but I have talked with some that are trying to see his side and understand where he is coming from.

The problem with those folks is they are missing the historical context, so they can't fully grasp how ridiculous his statements were.

As long as people are willing to be taught, then I can give a pass. So those that were empathizing with him, I help them understand from a historical perspective.

Some information really helps people understand something better.

One of the reasons I enjoy are discussions is that You always trying to stay positive

I think because I was a HUGE fan of Kanye and unfortunately you can find the posts to prove it.

So this hits me cause I go a WHOLE lot of people in my circle just saying

I TOLD YOU SO!!!

the people calling him out...that is to be expected and its NOT a surprise

What is disappointing like you mentioned?

Is the ones co-signing or trying to make excuses for him

and STILL using his mother's death as an excuse

THAT is dangerous as f*ck cause not only are they exposing themselves its adding fuel to the alt right fire

cause now all those liberals and white women who VOTED for Trump...

and acting like they DIDN'T?

Got a damn BLACK HERO...

he is now the patron saint of trolling with that rainbow haired dude.

When did Kanye West become this self proclaimed genius? Maybe I'm old-school, maybe I'm out of touch, but in the era where we celebrate mediocrity with such vigor, when did Kanye's platform become as big as people make it seem?

Because I simply don't see it.

I even hesitate to call him a "musical genius" and maybe that's a testament to growing up at about the same time he did, making beats on an MPC, making music as everyone did in the 90s pretty much, I never really felt like he was the greatest to ever do it. He has put out some good albums and some great tracks but that's about it.

When I think of people more deserving of that title, Dr. Dre is in position for such accolades, alongside a Snoop Dogg or a Biggie or even a Tupac. Jay-Z is simply in a world of his own, but listening to Kanye speak, he has this arrogance as if he's in this category with these legends, and I wanna when this took place and how? This guy has recently been comparing himself to Michael Jackson, Prince, Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, Albert Einstein and countless others who actually deserved the genius title.

Comical and mistaken.

When did we, as a hip hop community raise this guy to those levels? Or did we? Is this all just media hype?

What's your opinion on this? Do you think he's as good as he or others may believe, or are you as confused as I am?

I agree with you except I don't think Dre, Snoop , Biggie , Tupac or Jayz are no genuis either. In the end, they are creating from scratch, they are taking what was there and exploiting it. sampling is not creative. With that said. None of them fool including Kanye should be mention in the same breath as Michael, Prince Jobs, Disney or Einstein. FOH with that BS. oh yeah and fuck Kanye!!

No one was as popular as Kanye but he didn't invent the non gangsta and others paved the way for him. None of this makes you a genius . Lil Wayne is more influential

Sampling is creative. People who talk shit about sampling can’t chop a sample to save their life

if it came down me to me chopping a sample, then I really shouldn't have a life!! Coloring within the lines of a coloring book is creative but that does not make you creative. Context is my point.

highly disagree
hiphop pioneers created a whole new genre of music. is that not creative? creating something new that never existed before.

creative - resulting from originality of thought, expression.
He's clever in the way Dr Dre is clever...taking whole chunks of other peoples finished works and putting your own slight spin on it. This is the main issue for people who don't like rap music to gripe about. Its like giving credit to Dre for the "beat" on Nuthin But A G Thang... All he did was use the intro to Leon Haywards I Wanta Do Something Freaky To You..looped it added some accents to it and the most original thing was the actual lyrics over it.

The difference between genius and clever is if Dre had created that bass groove and music originally himself he'd be a genius but his using it in the manner he did makes him very clever.

Thats kanye..a very clever artist with a HUGE ego.

genius is:

stevie wonder, michael jackson, prince, bob marley, marley marl, rod temperton, quincy jones, herbie hancock,
chick corea, miles davis, public enemy, babyface, teddy riley, luther vandross, frankie knuckles, all the pioneers of hiphop.
again ?
