THE LAST AIRBENDER aka Avatar: The Live-Action Film (The Rocky Review)

Read an article that said Shyamalan cut out most of the slapstick comedy and silly interaction between the kids b/c he wanted the audience to feel Aang's pain of losing his entire race. He also wanted to show Aang grieving and felt that allowing him to act silly at times (like the cartoon) would make the audience disbelieve that he is devastated by his loss.

Stupid decision. Word is that he also filmed other town scenes like the Kyoshi Warriors, but cut them at the last minute because he felt it detracted from the main story. Another stupid decision, hopefully these scenes will end up on a "director's cut" type DVD.

Also, is it just me or does MNS have a crush on the fire nation? The whole fire nation is a homogenous group of people that mirror MNS' real life heritage, their characters got the best development in the movie, and he threw the blue spirit arc in the film. I think the blue spirit arc was one of the things that the film did well, but its inclusion is no less arbitrary than the kyoshi warriors story arc.

Basically MNS screwed up what could have been a blockbuster. All the tools are there: great costumes, landscapes, great special effects and fight scenes, but the execution is paltry. The good news is that the series is not beyond saving, if they either get a new director, or MNS makes the second movie longer and significantly better. Oh, and let the main characters watch the DAMN cartoon! I heard he forbid the cast from watching the cartoon after they were cast, so they could develop their own versions of the characters. WTF!

I wanted to see this joint and I usually never pay attention to reviews. I like to be objective and form my own opinions and such. So I was going to peep it Friday and all the crap I was hearing had me like I should wait til this shit come on cable. Going against my usual approach. I ended up seeing the Karate Kid. Then Sunday before I hit up some cook outs I said fuck it and went to peep it.

I really liked the shit. I thought it was good.I've never seen an episode of the show in my life. Got a quick break down of what the show was about from this chick i know that actually watches the show.

I'm a start peeping the show and see some of the points the fans of show had beef with in the movie. People are aware you can't get straight translation like that in movie. The book is always better then the movie. Closes page to screen translations I've seen were the Pelican Brief and Interview with a Vampire.

I understand this was a show and not a book (well at least not to my knowledge as I said I never saw the show so I don't know the background on it). But the talk of books vs movies is just a comparison of source material compared to movies.

Also, the finale was garbage. Aang makes a big tidal wave that does nothing. It goes up and then goes back down. That was supposed a be intimidating. I can't believe that in a 100 year war the Fire Nation would see a big wave do nothing and just run away. I'm sure they were faced with more adversity than that.

Hold on I don't want you to spoil the movie for anyone that cares but you telling me that the last fight scene of the movie wasn't what happened in the show?

When Aang merged with the ocean spirit and turned into a giant water monster?

Yep. A huge wave is all that happened. I think MNS was going for realism, which is already a fail in a movie where bison fly and people bend elements.

:( Man i can't wait for the bootleg.

That and the ones before it were important scenes.

I hope they can M. Night and recast for the next movie.

I personally thought the shit was a pretty good live adaptation. They stuck to the story for the most part. I know they can't fit EVERYTHING in. I don't see how people say the shit was rushed. The story was told almost perfectly. I didn't like how they pronounced Aang's name, but fuck it. I think another director could have pulled it off better. I hope all these negative reviews don't deter the studio from making sequels.

I watched the animated series and I found the movie somewhat tolerable. I know they couldn't fit all that stuff in a hour n a half movie but it still felt stale. Most of the actors alone were just "turrible":smh: and they could've did a better job of putting stuff together instead of showing one thing and then jumping to another. They should've had the Kyoshi Warriors in it (so in book 2 Sokka meets Suki w/o the makeup on), Jet was left out even though he was kinda filler in the cartoon...didn't like how they found the water scroll in some damn rundown earth kingdom villiage...no time to put the pirates in it? at least have SOME humor in the movie, like the guy with the cabbages:lol:. Two things that I think are gonna fuck up Book 2 and 3 is for one, Azula didn't look sadistic and terrifying like she did in the cartoon (she WILL make or break Book 2, her character is more important than Zuko) and *SPOILER ALERT*

when Ozai in the movie said Sozin's comet is gonna come in 3 YEARS!!!! WTF IT COMPLETELY CHANGES BOOK 2 AND 3!! The whole point of the series focuses around Aang learning the other elements in a short amount of time! Shid now he can literally fuggin grow up and learn the shit before anything really happens:smh: M.Night really fucked up on that one...I guess he wanted his actors to looked like they grown with the future movies but it completely changes everything IMO.:smh: I really like the animated series and do wanna see Book 2 and 3 if they ever come to life, but M. Night is really making that hard to do... I can live with him pronouncing the names differently, I can live with showing Ozai in Book 1 even though he wasn't shown until Book 2, I can live with him tweaking the story just a smidgen...but what I can't live with is the shitty "good guys" acting, the fucked up editing (that fire nation and rock nation fight was so fuckin cheesy) AND him saying the Comet is COMING IN 3 YEARS!!!!:angry: OK i'm done:yes: It's a hell of alot more to rant about but I think I covered most of the major fukkups... Oh yea, and at the end..."We want you to be our Avatarararrar..." ?????? WTF!!!:lol:

tbh they should let it it die for now and redo it in a few years like punisher and Hulk let folks forget it and hit em with something later

FINALLY! Someone else says it. I knew I couldn't have been the only person to hear that shit. How M. Night let that fuck up go through is beyond me.

I'm watching this movie and people are dead on about the Ung's and Ongs, hell a guy in the crowed yelled out "ANG!". I hate to nitpick the small stuff but why in the movie do the fire benders always need an already lit fire around to fire bend? Didnt in the cartoon they just shoot fire out of their bodies?

Their chi created the fire in the cartoon. But I never understood why the Fire Nation could do that and no other nation could. That aspect alone I agree with being changed.

I give this movie a C-. I am a fan of the series and this was a attempt to jam everything in to 2 hours. 1st of all when was the last film the M. Night has done good on?? One thing that was good was the voice match up, that was crazy on point. But they need a way better second movie or do the whole Hulk think and just do it over right.

Every review I've seen said the movie was garbage especially if you are a fan of the cartoon

Seriously have you watched or read any thing about avatar the last air bender.

That show has enough material on philosophy, art, world culture and history, war tactics, love, hate, the mentally ill and/or the psychotic, self defense, and nationality, amongst other subjects to start a decent college course on the show.

Show is fire. If you haven't watched it you should give it a try.

True indeed. The show is one of the best animated shows I have ever seen. It more than rivals the Dragon Ball saga's. I must say I am very disappointed with the way the movie was made. Oh and just when I though maybe there was a chance it could get better it ends abruptly. I feel like I should have known better than to watch another M. Night Shyamalan, movie. Here is a link to the movie. http://www.videoweed.com/file/gg03wj68zfg8c . I am hoping there is another part to because I have been searching to no avail.
