Technical Mathematics....

Technical Math is algebra, it may go into polynomials and some graphing depending on the application.

DO NOT DROP OUT!!! There are too many of people willing to quit because "It's too hard". That's the new slavery. Plenty of us willing to help you succeed on this board...Just ask your questions and try to learn and then pass on what you know and learn to the next brother with courage enough to ask! That's how we grow as a people.

I'll be needed alot of help then, I need to understand the basics of + and - and when it's - or +.

Chapter 2 and 3 test is today and I'm gonna fail that shit....

Failed test 0 and 1 too lol.... woah... it don't hit you until you older......

That is what messed a lot of folks up

it is x squared same as x^2

why doesn't vBulletin come standard with superscript and subscript tags? They come standard on every other message board.

If a mod is reading this can you activate them?

3x - 3[2 - 2{x^2 - 2y}] - x^3

all you can do with this one is distribute ... note that distribution is a form of simplification and you may see the terms used interchangably

3x - 6 + 6x^2 - 12y - x^3 ... the 12y is from -3[-2{-2y}]

Just post what you need...When I used to tutor, I told all my students to get index cards and when you find a rule in the book, put it on a card. When you are doing your homework use the cards instead of the book to learn the rules and as a reference to save time. Math is a language and as long as you know the rules, its fairly easy. Most people have a phobia of math and think of it as "too complicated", but when you break it down it goes back to the basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division so as long as you know those four, everything else is a trick, shortcut or rule you apply.

Also, just remember the grade isn't final until its posted so wait to see if there will be a curve.

It looks like you jumped into this Technical Math course without first mastering Arithmetic...I was in the SAME boat just last semester as I was taking a placement test for an Algebra course that I need....I'm going for an Electricians Apprenticeship and they require a year of college Algebra PLUS you have to pass the math aptitude test...

So I go to register for Algebra last semester and I took the accuplacer and I got a 55 on it....They wouldn't even let me register in Algebra and I was going to be forced to take a remedial math course THIS semester unless I was able to get a higher score....So I had to take a remedial math course for like six weeks to learn arithmetic and then I got a 99 on that same accuplacer test...

So as we speak, I am in Algebra class...In fact, I was there today....And I always sucked at math....But even though I do internet porn and don't have to work, it is on the decline....I still remember the days of applying for a shitty job that I didn't even want in the first place...and believe me, learning math is MUCH easier than that....I got an 85 on my first test and that's because I wasn't allowed to use the calculator on my phone, otherwise I would've gotten at least a 90.

If you don't know how to work with fractions and decimals for example, then you're going to have a problem in Algebra....So if you're failing everything like this...You might want to drop the course and see if they offer a remedial course...Also, if you're failing this bad, it's doubtful that you even were required to take a placement test first....If you DID take a placement test and pass it, then you need to find yourself a tutor...

Also, you need to be at every class, be on time and sit FRONT AND CENTER.....Actively participate in EVERY problem that is being worked in class...And even if you're wrong, try to say something....And if you don't understand, ASK A FUCKING QUESTION and make sure that they work that problem out for you again on the board...Don't worry about looking stupid....

And just decide that you're going to have to learn math no matter what.

If you don't get a solution (posters...please remember to help this brother out by posting solutions not just an answer) quickly enough, try this site also...

http://mathway.com/default.aspx

Choose ALGEBRA for the subject, input the problem like you do here (use the caret and no spaces), and then click [show] and verify the expression is correct, choose the operation (simplify, solve or whatever) then click [answer]...

As an Electrician, you should also take a year of Trigonometry for technicians.

If you are going to work with 3Ø Motors and circuits, it can help you really understand what is going on.

I can't tell you how many times looking at meters and thinking about what the numbers are telling me helps me get the job fixed faster than a guy without the math training.

THE KHAN ACADEMY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kly25zVbco&feature=player_embedded

The Khan Academy is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) with the mission of providing a world-class education to anyone, anywhere.
Salman Khan has made available more than 1,500 mini-lectures to educate the world. Subjects range from math and physics to finance, biology, and current economics.

Khan Academy amounts to little more than a YouTube channel and one very devoted man. He is trying to provide education in the way he wished he had been taught.
With more than 100,000 video views a day, the man is making a difference for many students.

In his FAQ
http://www.khanacademy.org/faq.jsp
he explains how he knows he is being effective. What will probably ensure his popularity (and provide a legacy surpassing that of most highly paid educators) is that everything is licensed under Creative Commons 3.0.

He only needs his time, a $200 Camtasia Recorder, an $80 Wacom Bamboo Tablet, and a free copy of SmoothDraw3.
While the lecturing may not be quite up to the Feynman level, it's a great augmenter for advanced learners, and a lifeline for those without much access to learning resources.

On a side note (math related) for kats who need help with their C, C#, C++, Java and any other programming language StackOverflow is an excellent resource. They'll answer your questions quickly and make sure you understand what it is you're doing.

Wish this was available 9/10 years ago when I needed it during undergrad years :smh::confused:

I don't want to quit but I'm not a person that did well at school and I missed alot of years not being in school so this is foreign to me. I probably won't pass it and just move like I wanted to years ago to another state and just get my cdl or cut hair or something and call it a day.

If I had a better educational background I'll consider it but this shit is new to me, totally new and if I fail 2 more test I won't pass the course.

It's the reality of not getting educated when ya young, ya fall behind.

If you fail take it again, and again if you have to. Getting pass this hurdle will help you when other challenges in life come. If you give this up, what else will you give up? If you have to take this math class 3 times but you pass, you'll feel better about it versus taking it once, failing and quitting.

BTW - Math is about repetition. The more you solve/practice problems the more familiar it becomes. Good luck bro

Just to lend a hand as well to this brother:

This is one of the simplest maths problems but it can easily confuse you because of the brackets and the powers.

But to master it you need to think of it as one problem that can be presented in a million ways. But the trick lies here:

All the problems you posted previously are of the following form:
(a + b)(a + b) = a² + 2ab + b²... This means that all the problems will always start with what is shown in left hand side and end with what is shown in right.

So they give you the left and ask you to make it look like the right.

So, given if given (a + b)(a + b) this is what you do [call this step (1)]:

a (a + b) + b(a + b) .................... You take each value in the left bracket (red) and multiply with bracket on the right (blue)

From the above you get [call this step (2)]:
(a · a) + (a · b) + (b · a) + (b · b) .............. NB: a · b = b · a

So, from the above you get [ call this step (3)]:
= a² + ab + ab + b² ..............

Finally you get the right hand side (you adding/substract similar terms or like terms):

a² + 2ab + b²

------------------------------------

Now back to one of your problems to see how they fits this approach:

2(x² - 3) + 3(x² + 7) .... you'll think that this is very different but most of work has been done for you. Note, similar to step (3) from above...

Step 1: Get rid of the brackets by multiplying thus:
(2· x²) - (2 · 3) + (3·x²) + (3·7) .... whether you get problems with x² or with x³ you do this all the time...

= 2x² - 6 + 3x² + 21 = (2x² + 3x²) + (21 - 6) .... sort out the like terms

and after sorting out the like terms you finally get this:

5x² + 15

Glad you posted the steps brother. I was just being lazy.

:lol::lol: Once again BGOL know it alls gonna have a mofo failing at life!!!

These are all straight order of operation questions. This is pre-algebra stuff guys :smh: Factoring and simplification. OP, learn how to phrase stuff the right way.

Here is help but please understand these questions or I promise it will only get worse:

This is correct, this is just simplifcation and factoring
DO NOT use FOIL.

You use foil when you're mutliplying/dividing polynomials, to get the product.

Not adding them to get the sum.

You are not doing trig, so do not use Trigonometry on the Mathway site...Choose ALGEBRA for the subject, input the problem like you do here (use the caret and no spaces), and then click [show] and verify the expression is correct, choose the operation (simplify, solve or whatever) then click [answer]... If you need to, get a trial membership so you can see the solutions step by step.

Last math I had to take was on a Praxis I Teacher's Exam. Did pretty well actually. Better than I thought.

Other than that, a lot of everyday life is applied mathematics and some of it you will just need experience to learn.
