The new SNAP food restrictions aren’t just confusing — they’re illegal

BY TYSON-LORD GRAY
03/04/26

Eighteen states have gained Department of Agriculture approval to restrict what 1.4 million SNAP recipients can purchase at grocery stores through the program. Eight have already begun enforcement — and the contradictions are immediate.

A chocolate-covered granola bar is SNAP-eligible in Idaho and Louisiana but restricted in Oklahoma. All three waivers were approved by the Department of Agriculture. All three states began enforcement this month.

Small grocery stores are facing hundreds of thousands in implementation costs and risk losing SNAP authorization entirely if they can’t navigate the contradictions. Multi-state retailers must track which state issued each customer’s EBT card to know what they’re allowed to buy — because the same granola bar that’s eligible in one state may be banned in another.

But here’s the problem that matters more than the administrative chaos: The Department of Agriculture lacks legal authority to approve any of this.

Section 17 of the Food and Nutrition Act authorizes “demonstration projects” to test improvements in how SNAP delivers benefits. This applies to projects that streamline applications, expedite processing and simplify delivery. It does not provide for substantive changes to program design or benefits...

Bruh,

I used to deliver mail to a house in a well off part of Westlake,Oh (which is already an upperclass suburb.

The dad owned a "corner store" and eventually I think got another one or 2 more. This dude had an addition to his house, a 2 story house. He expanded the ground floor and added 4 bedrooms to the top. To accommodate he and his wife, their 3 kids and 2 of the girls had kids of their own (single moms go figure). This was originally a 5 bedroom house, now 9 and a full finished basement.....with 8 mostly luxury cars (jaguar SUV, 2 Mercedes S class and 2 SUVS, a Maserati, ) the "cheapest" car was a recent model Lexus car) in the driveway.

And they're getting CareSource (medicaid) and SNAP benefit statements in the mail.........

I couldnt believe it.

Hey I explained the pizza shop hustle as well as other mom and pop shops hustle

Fathers owning the restaurants while having their kids working under the table.. pops owning a brownstone or townhouse with multiple floors.. each kid living on 1 floor with their girlfriend and kids.. girlfriend unemployed so they getting food stamps for herself and children.. than they get section 8 , they take the section 8 money and give it to the pops.. so the owner getting free section 8 money from his kids babymothers, each of their families getting food stamps so free groceries.. than the kicker the owner buy cars and have each car filed under a bizness vechile, so it’s a tax write off… in the end pops still give his sons money under the table for working for him.. this happens for a lot of non black mom and pop spots utilizing loopholes to get free money, help from government.. this 1 of the reasons with hiring within the family policies

In one instance, the audit found someone with a $2 million lottery winning had been flagged by the system in July 2023, but was still receiving benefits as recently as February 2026 -- for a total of $9,000 in benefits since being flagged. Under federal law, a household immediately becomes ineligible for these benefits after winning a "substantial" lottery prize.

SNAP recipients, some middle-class families get $60 monthly for produce in new bill. Who qualifies?

The “Fresh Bucks for Fresh Produce” Act would establish a pilot program that awards grants to states so they can give the extra grocery money to lower-income and moderate-income people. To qualify for increased benefits, households would need to earn 80% or less than the median income of their area.

Hey I posted the exact number last yr and the yr b4, but I forget what the number was but I think in this country it was close to like 58 billion dollars a yr is given through snap.. I said how quietly this benefits a lot of biz and how even big biz like Costco, Walmart, and target would love to get a hold of that demographic.. in fact I remember how I said I started seeing a lot of “new “ people going to the Costco I frequent.. lot of more latins, Africans, Asians, and others shopping.. I know they were recipients of those benefits.. I know that company was loving it.. so cutting these benefits can fuck up big and small biz profits
