"The first 2 to 4 films you do in this business... will dictate how you are perceived in this business" - Sidney Poitier (via Denzel Washington)
Absolutely agree.
Denzel's first 5 (major) movies...
- Carbon Copy
- A Soldier's Story
- Power
- Cry Freedom (His 1st Oscar Nomination)
- For Queen and Country
--------------------------------
Denzel even appears an outstanding tv Doctor on "St. Elsewhere" for 6 seasons during this time.
Tyler Perry's first 5 (major) movies...
- Diary of a Mad Black Woman
- Madea's Family Reunion
- Daddy's Little Girls
- Why Did I Get Married?
- Meet the Browns
--------------------------------
Tyler appears as 'Madea' in 3 out of 5 films.
Same character. Different location. Different circumstances.
The proof speaks for itself.
Think about how Sidney Poitier's quote above applies to the actors you mentioned....
Dustin Hoffman starred in Tootsie...
But don't forget, he also starred in movies like Rain Man, Outbreak, Sleepers & Kung Fu Panda.
Patrick Swayze starred in Too Wong Foo...
But don't forget, he also starred in movies like Roadhouse, Dirty Dancing, The Outsiders & Steel Dawn.
Tom Hanks starred in Bosom Buddies...
But don't forget, he also starred in movies like Splash, Big, Toy Story (1,2,3), Forrest Gump, The Green Mile, Castaway, Saving Private Ryan, The Da Vinci Code & Road to Perdition.
Tony Curtis appeared in Some Like It Hot...
But don't forget, he also starred in movies like Spartacus & The Defiant Ones.
See the MAJOR difference between all these other actors and Tyler Perry?
They never let ONE SINGLE ROLE...... define their WHOLE career.
That's the difference.
Tyler is making MAJOR bank. Good for him.
What he does with all the money & production resources... only time will tell.
From now on, will the majority of his films follow the same old formula?
- i.e. a typical 'Black Family Drama / or Comedy' with a Gospel message - that celebrates the 'victimization' of black women.
As the ONLY black director in Hollywood who can 'greenlight' a major movie... will this become Tyler's legacy in the Black community?
Should it matter?
20 years from now.... will he be considered the highest paid (cross-dressing) black director EVER....... to own his own studio?
And will we see 20 years worth of "Precious: Part 4" and "Madea: Part 8" and "Why did I get married? Part 5".... listed in his filmography credits?
Is he capable of using all his money & resources to create something ELSE?
Something completely different?
Just a decent movie. Period.
- A movie that doesn't involve child abuse.

- nor bash black men, in some fashion.

- nor involve black women getting abused.

- nor have any characters dressed in 'drag'.

- nor any of the characters from his previous movies.
With all that money & resources... how hard is that?

As the
ONLY black director in Hollywood who can 'greenlight' a major movie... should it matter?
