In 1995, Todd McFarlane’s most iconic character came to life on the big screen in a very disappointing way. Jamie Foxx apparently wants to change that as according to an interview Foxx did at Comic-Con with Movies.com, the actor is “aggressively pursuing” rebooting Spawn with Foxx playing the titular demon.
Per Movies.com’s interview with Foxx:
As versatile as Foxx seems to be these days, there are still projects he’s trying to make happen, including an adaptation of the comic character Spawn, as well as a biopic about Mike Tyson. “Spawn is one, yeah. And Mike Tyson. Those are two roles I would just love to do. I’m aggressively pursuing them,”
While fanboys like myself will geek out over the notion that Spawn could be resurrected in this golden comic book movie era, another large tidbit to take away from the interview is that Foxx is trying to get back in the biopic business and play Mike Tyson. This past weekend Deadpool kicked the box office’s ass, and by doing so has opened the door for other risky films to follow in its path. I spoke about this a few hours ago, and alluded to the fact thatDeadpool makes it possible for an R-rated Wolverine, which has just been announced, as well as other properties that studio’s may have been too scared to pull the trigger on.
My belief is that Todd McFarlane’s Spawn is one such case. He’s been talking about his own adaptation for years now, so much so that I hesitate covering any updates. But the timing is really good here and I’m sensing McFarlane is seeing an opportunity to get a major studio behind a reboot of Spawn.
ComicBook has the exclusive out of the New York Toy Fair, and added even more to the story that began with news of a completely screenplay (that still needs to be trimmed down).
Things get really good here when McFarlane reveals that his Spawn, which he intends to direct, will be a “Hard R” in the vein of a horror film. Shit, he compares Spawn to the Boogeyman and even states that it will be along the lines of if The Departed met Paranormal Activity – without all of the visual effects!
“In the background, there’s this thing moving around, this boogeyman. That boogeyman just happens to be something that you and I, intellectually, know is Spawn,” he explained. “Will he look like he did in the first movie? No. Will he have a supervillain he fights? No. He’s going to be the spectre, the ghost.”
He likens Spawn’s presence in the new movie to that of the lurking evil in Japanese horror films (and their Hollywood remakes) like ‘The Grudge’ or ‘The Ring.’
“I think they all work because there’s only one thing in the movie that’s not normal. There’s not five things, there’s one thing that’s the boogeyman. So that’ll be Spawn,” he said. “He’s this thing that just whooshes in, this ghost that moves and will f*** you up if you’re in the wrong place in the wrong time, and the rest of the movie will look real, and be this real drama. He’s just this ghost, this thing behind it.”
It’s a take on the character, moving even farther from the superhero comics that birthed it, that McFarlane has been wanting to explore for awhile, but it also has a practical application.
“Basically, I can make this version of the movie on a budget without crazy special effects,” he said with a slight chuckle. “I want to keep it small, keep it tight, so they’ll let me direct it!”

This is still a risky film to make. I don't expect a company to have the balls to do it with a big budget. They didn't even have faith in Deadpool. They spent 50 million not the budget so just in case if it flopped they wouldn't get hit too hard. Spawn is a much more darker project.

You can do Spawn with a 50 million dollar budget as long as you go HARD R with it. The first one had the perfect guy playing Spawn and Violator. It also had Teresa Russel in her finest. The problem is that everything else sucked.This is still a risky film to make. I don't expect a company to have the balls to do it with a big budget. They didn't even have faith in Deadpool.
But I do think that the best thing about Deadpool is that it might finally allow Hard properties likes Sandman, Witchblade, or The Darkness to come to light. The Darkness being the hardest to pull though, because that shit would be a little too intense.

Completely agree.... but the main point is that hopefully this will allow them to greenlight more R-rated Superhero movies. And actually Slam... Sadly there were 3 punisher films.

Dredd unfortunately didnt do big numbers either..
The second dredd was amazing. I think the problem with Dredd is that people had a bad taste with the second one. Also Karl Urban is not a headliner. Same thing with Thomas Jane and the dude who played Frank Castle in the sequel. Ryan Reynolds (even though he has had alot of bombs) is still a household name and the marketing for this movie was amazing. It all basically started with that leaked footage from last year. Then it had two amazing trailers and a great online video campaign. It was a brilliant move and something Fox really isn't known to do.

I'm not sure if it would work. Deadpool and Kick Ass worked because they had elements of comedy.
I actually liked both the last punisher and Judge Dredd movies, but I don't recall anyone talking about them.I also didn't think the last Robocop was that bad either (wasn't rated R), but it kind of seems like people aren't really into more pure action type movies anymore.
