Child shot in face while at home
BELLPORT (WABC) -- A young boy is in the hospital tonight after being shot inside a Long Island home.
The incident happened in Bellport.
The young victim only 9 or 10 years old was shot in the face and is in the hospital in serious condition.
Police say the child was shot around 1:30 p.m. in his home on Provost Ave.
Before detectives could begin to investigate the scene, they had to clear out a number of pit bulls that were inside and surrounding the house. At least 15 dogs were led out of the location on leashes and in cages.
Once the house was cleared, authorities were able to begin their investigation and try to figure out what happened.
"He was shot from the outside, the bullet went through the wall and struck the child that was in the house," said Det. Sgt. David Mulloy with the Suffolk County Police.
The child was at the kitchen table when he was shot. It was not clear what the child was doing at the time of the shooting.
There were at least three shots fired according to police.
The victim's family raced the child to Brookhaven hospital, where he was then transferred to Stonybrook Hospital.
There are no suspects in this case at this time.
