Sesame Street's Message to Black Girls: Stop Hating Yourself

Father of 2 daughters, and I'll be damned if they have a perm as long as I can control it!!!

the sad part is many black mothers saw that and said "uh uh not my daughter"

man I dated a girl back in the day, she was fine as hell. She was super smart and loved sucking dick. Well she told me she didn't like being black. My relationship ended before she finished her sentence. Chez whitey got us good with that one man. Its hard to battle mental slavery and self hate.

How you gonna fault her for the way she felt? Everyone don't have to think or feel the same.

Im glad it's coming from Sesame street for our youth to listen to because it's too late for these "grown" bitches.

^^^unnecessary
I'm glad it's on Sesame Street because not only black kids watch it. Black hair is really magnificent with all of the things we can do with it without the damage of harsh chemicals.

I work for PBS. Sesame Street has always been on another level when it comes to the way kids of all colors are portrayed. I don't work mornings, so I missed when this aired but I'm damn proud of that video. Great Post. 5 Stars!

Da hell is this. Thank God women in my fam have Good straight dark hair.

Using the words "good" and "straight" synonymously when talking about hair is exactly why skits like this are necessary. Too many little girls and grown women think that having curly or course hair is a disease that must be cured by any means necessary.

^^^ come on guys. Don't even acknowledge what that troll types. He's worse than Blunt.

My girls are CONSTANTLY complimented on their natural hair styles by white and Asian women... the only Black women who have said anything positive about their hair are those with natural hair. Last week, a young Black woman at Costco asked when we were going to get them their first perms... we said "Never."... she gave us the ... my wife literally gave her the :smh::smh:

All I could do was

Is this for real? It's pitiful that a white company has to tell Blacks that there is nothing wrong with their natural hair.

Shit for some it is truth be told.

But the hair is an extension of the body. Eating healthy will give healthy hair. But our hair represents so much more than just hair. And not just with women either...why do you think it is that most black men cut off their hair? they do not keep their natural texture and are scared to have it longer than a snap. It's an important topic. Not as important as others, but still important. We have no black pride any more...

 I LOVE it!!! That's the cutest thing I've ever seen

LOL @ some fools in here who probably have white girls tryin tell sistas what to do with their hair though ... GTFOH ... ya'll are half the damn problem

:smh::smh::smh::smh:...Another thing is, no matter how much a Black woman(light or dark skin) tries to assimilate with white culture, they will always be reminded that they are not one of them either directly or indirectly...

How you gonna fault her for the way she felt? Everyone don't have to think or feel the same.

That woman will never be happy, and happiness is the ultimate goal in life. Regardless of how many chemical processes she can go through to change her outside, her genes will always be that of a Negroid

Is this for real? It's pitiful that a white company has to tell Blacks that there is nothing wrong with their natural hair.

It's also pitiful that white companies have been telling Blacks there is something wrong with their hair for eons.

why do you think it is that most black men cut off their hair?

I dont know the complete reason, but I do know in the corporate world one of the reasons alot of black dudes wear bald heads is because they are trying to remove themselves from everything that can remind their counterparts of their ethnicity as much as possible, in this case its their hair..Now if you are going bald and chop it off, thats a whole different situation

That is true.

It was a revolutionary show in children's programming in that it was the first to have a multi-ethnic cast that wasn't
heavily weighted to the white side (with kids of color included mainly as tokens).
Also, they deliberately made the "human" muppets racially ambiguous, for the most part.

The 70s precursor to this vid is this song by the late great Joe Raposo:

"Bein' Green," originally titled "Green," is one of Kermit the Frog's best-known songs. It was written in 1970 by Joe Raposo for the first season of Sesame Street, and has since become an American standard.

In the song, Kermit expresses his ambivalence about his color, noting that green "blends in with so many other ordinary things" and wishing that he were some other color instead. During the bridge, Kermit realizes that there are some powerful associations with the color -- "green can be big, like a mountain, or important, like a river, or tall like a tree." In the end, he decides that he's happy to be green -- "it's beautiful, and I think it's what I want to be."

The song was described in a Children's Television Workshop press release as "a frog's poignant realization of his own dignity and worth." [1] The song has been viewed as a powerful message about race: music journalist Danyel Smith recalls in The Greatest TV Moments: Sesame Street Music A-Z that her mother said to imagine that instead of saying "green," they said "black."

..why do you think it is that most black men cut off their hair?

Because Black women don't like long natural hair, it will hurt their chances of getting laid. And most Black men care about what most Black women think.

I myself have a fro. I'm going to get it "trimmed" soon because it's at the point of locking up and I don't want locks. Now what type of chicks are constantly telling me how cool my hair is? NOT BLACK, that's for sure.
