Sesame Street's Message to Black Girls: Stop Hating Yourself

Thing is, women tend to do what they think will attract men and make them "beautiful" in their eyes. I recall reading on this board when guys saw the Anti-Piracy PSA I shot for Free Speech Coalition. I was the only Black face in the video, and I wore my curly hair pulled back into an afro-puff. You know what the general reaction of this board was? That I needed to take a pressing comb to my hair. :smh: Funny thing is, I viewed it as pitiful that those same men would be on a board about BLACK women and yet despise the things that make them Black.

Most brothas like natural hair if it looks a certain way ... not too many will step to or support a sista rockin how our hair really looks and not the drop curl version ... then they complain about perms/weaves ... shit is backwards

In my opinion, if Black women don't want to rock natural hair it's because of Black men. Most Black men don't react to nature hair the same way thy do to processed hair... and that's the truth.

When I ask Black men that say they love natural hair to show me what they like, what they point out ALWAYS looks like this this....

and NEVER like this

What that means to me is that most Black men like a certain type of natural hair and not so much the normal type of natural hair. If I was a woman, I'd go with whatever gave me the best chance of getting the most men.

Hmmmm, it's really good reading this...because I feel the same way but I'm glad that I no longer feel the need to wear my hair a certain way to attract a man.

To be honest I like Natural hair but I'd rather go for the larger fros than the short ones... Dunno why , that or Locks.
:dunno:

But you do know that those larger fros takes time right? so would you knock a chick if she doesn't have the size fro you are attracted to right now?

It has to start off small before it grows to large ... boy, will you focus?? smmfh See what I mean??? lmaooooo

Whoa whoa whoa!!!!

I like Natural hair but the lil fros that are all misshapen dont do it for me lol. Pick it out then cool.
But the Above pictures with the lumpy fros = no.

Wouldnt knock her but if she had an identical twin with a larger Fro next to her. I'd choose her. And it depends on her face. Twists are naturalish too right? Can she twist them up or something? :D

Ok I get it ... same shit I just spoke on

you gotta right click on the pic and sselect 'properties'. then put that link in the img brackets :)

They are all in image brackets though.. Hmm... Weird. Also I'm on a MAC so there's no right click. But when I view the images in edit it shows that they are all in image brackets. Annoying. Oh well. I need to focus on making dinner so the family can eat before the Man comes home.

^^^^ relax

@ sinnamon: But your links are different from mine. You posted the website link. I posted the image link. How do you get image properties on a Mac? That should solve your problem.

damn!!!!!!

Wow and you can cook too.

You are the total package.

Love it!!!!

Yes. if you follow me on twitter @sinnamonlove I post nightly menus, sometimes I post twitpics of food and I do a weekly ustream while I'm preparing meals. I'm a bit of a gourmet so its usually something completely decadent. Tonight's menu is Chinese: Broccoli and Beef for the men, Sesame Ginger Chicken & Asparagus for my daughter, Asparagus Tomato Stirfry for me & homemade fried rice for all. Last night was a pan-seared chicken with nutmeg, thyme, kosher salt & black pepper, yellow rice & and sauteed garlic spinach. ;-) Trust... my man comes home EVERY night.

That's interesting. I just opened the post in edit and the image brackets are around the photos just like I put them. However, twitpic doesn't use .jpg at the end so perhaps the boards HTML code isn't recognizing it as an image? I haven't been on this board in a cool minute so I'm not sure...

hhm hmmmmmmmm i love me some chinese soul food.

Do you need a twitter account to follow u boo.

bullshit, if your hair is fucked up eating healthy wont do shit, lets face it some niggas just got some fucked up hair. Black hair requires more maintenance, and soem folks dont have time to maintain it. So let me get this strait if I dont want to look like quest love or grow locks that means im scared so I cut my hair?

You can pop into twitter and view anyone's public page without having one of your own but you wouldn't be "following" me.

^ Cuz most bitches that rock this style are ugly as fuck, like the ones you posted.

If you're not feeling the ladies look, I can't blame you... but that has nothing to do with their hair. I've seen plenty of women I haven't been attracted to, but still was able to say their hair was laid.

Grr... Fixed the pics and half worked then the other half didn't. Fixed those now the first ones aren't working. Fucking eh...

Fuck it. I've fixed the links and they keep showing in the preview and then they are broken. I'm done.

Commendable. Interesting reading some of the replies... I expected what I read from certain people. Thing is, women tend to do what they think will attract men and make them "beautiful" in their eyes. I recall reading on this board when guys saw the Anti-Piracy PSA I shot for Free Speech Coalition. That I needed to take a pressing comb to my hair. :smh: Funny thing is, I viewed it as pitiful that those same men would be on a board about BLACK women and yet despise the things that make them Black. Over the years I've worn my share of extensions... mostly to protect my locks from makeup artists that didn't know what they were doing with my mass of curly hair. I haven't had a perm in over a decade. I haven't worn extensions in over 2 years. Whether my hair is naturally curly or flat ironed straight, I love the versatility of being able to do what I want with it. And most men love it. I recently met a fan from the Ivory Coast that plays professional soccer and his reaction to my hair was that "African women don't have hair like yours," due to its soft, thin, curly texture. I know that my multi-ethnic background gives me a different grade of hair than some, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. Regardless of what some less informed men that only view assimilative images of Black woman beautiful.

Enjoy...

So yeah... I love having natural hair. I think its sad that there are guys that think a woman can't be sexy without it. My curly hair often gets me mistaken for Latina... even my S.O.'s mom thought I was Cuban when we met. But I proudly tell people that despite my curls, the German, Creole and Native American bloodlines - I am STILL a Black Woman.

*Whew! It looks like all the links are working now. :)

Off topic..Lone star..Whats the story behind your sig. Thats a very strange looking photo.

I think the video was cute but it needs to be reiterated inside the home. I can't count how many little girls I see with their napes and edges all burned out on a weekly basis. My bigger concern is that most of the corporations that make these products for "Black hair" have no knowledge about the needs of curly hair.

BTW, coarse hair is just a texture, not a curl pattern. As an example, many Native Americans and Indians have coarse straight hair.

Da hell is this. Thank God women in my fam have Good straight dark hair.

Mine do too but that ain't the point. You're so lost, the singular message went right over your head.

the sad part is many black mothers saw that and said "uh uh not my daughter"

Its hard to battle mental slavery and self hate.

So true. My daughter got wavy silky hair in the morning but by time she come back from daycare she rocking an Angela Davis.

Either way, she is a pretty kid and she knows it.

I work for PBS. Sesame Street has always been on another level when it comes to the way kids of all colors are portrayed. I don't work mornings, so I missed when this aired but I'm damn proud of that video. Great Post. 5 Stars!

Good to know brother. Niggas (yeah I mean niggas - white, black or other) ain't ready for real growth. Sometimes, you have to get down to the basic fundamentals of education to create even a spark of interest in an adult. Sad shit but true.

Is this for real? It's pitiful that a white company has to tell Blacks that there is nothing wrong with their natural hair.

Fam, look at Acurs post and you'll see why they do.

And that is where the programming begins. They gain their identity from the parents and was is inherently good or bad. How the parent reacts to what is good or bad, or what is pretty or ugly. There is something wrong when you ask a nonwhite child to choose between two dolls of different colors and they start choosing what is ugly as the doll of their color. Or who us bad based on color. Remember children also gain these ideas as well through language skills as the synonym for black and white are also understood.

Which makes it a crime when parents rely on the education system to teach their children, knowing damn well that it's the same system which taught them hate and subservience to this culture. You will always find programs built based on ethnic backgrounds outperformed public schools, from yeshivas, to Islamic, to the magnet school in Harlem, the ones in Canada, the retraining program for youths in California.
