The school is fighting to maintain its accreditation and financial stability. They are about 8 mil in debt and students are leaving. I did contract work for this school. I did everything from setting up events, maintenance, security and working basketball and football games. I'm technically still a contractor for them but haven't worked there in over a year (was never paid on time :() I have many friends who are St. Aug alumni but all of them are struggling. Hopefully someone like Oprah can bail them out.

Yeah it's been going on for years. The sad thing is they been screwing the students with tuition and fees. The average underclassman probably didn't know they could go to a better school like NC A&T or NCCU for almost half the cost. Hell even NC State is cheaper than St. Aug.
Not surprised since they are private. Not to be funny, but I never knew what the school was known for program and degree wise....

I remember going to a gym jam my freshman year and was like damn this school is in the hood and has a trash ass gym lol

Most HBCUs cost more than your run of the mill PWI... Tuition costs too much nowadays to want to say you attend a HBCU.

It's fucked up to push the ineptitude of successful business running skills on the students. That's Trump esque

I was going to post a picture but then decided not to, but that chick third from the left, yikes that body is just yikes

Most alum don’t. I preach that shit every homecoming. Try to explain $25 a month ain’t going to hurt. Do auto pay and at the end of the year it’s a tax write off.
Not just the alum, but members of the community. People from the community can donate a small percentage of their tithe money to the university and set up an autopay of $5 bucks a month.

Unfortunately, this is a sad reality for many HBCUs in NC, especially the private schools.

St. Aug and Bennett College are not state supported schools. They are suffering the same fate as Barbara Scotia. Bennett has a strong history, so they been bailed out by big donors, but I can’t say the same for St. Aug.

Shaw U is state supported, so they’ll always have funds.

Bro, when I was hooping at state, we went to St. Aug, which was my first time going there. Their gym share the same space as their theater stage. Straight old school shit. I was surprised that was a university. My high school gym was more modern than that.

They didn’t have enough seats, so nigs was standing everywhere. Don’t get me wrong, the charm of it all was nostalgic, but in hindsight it was the worst gym in the CIAA. Well, them an St. Paul University in Virginia. Whitaker gym was better and Whitaker was historic itself. Lol.

I’m pro HBCU, but some of these school are hanging on to the historical value versus what they are actually doing for students. I would never suggest going to some of the outdated HBCUs just to fall in student loan debt with a school barely hanging on programs and accreditation.

And the degree programs in these struggling school at general as hell. You can get those degrees cheaper at community colleges or state supported schools.
Is there a need for a private HBCU in 2025? What are they? How does a private HBCU look?

What did WEB say about HBCU 100 years ago?

Probably not the amount we have today. Like Howard, Moorehouse, and Spelman will be ok. But these others just don’t have much to offer.

And how they look? Man, I don’t want to be disrespectful. Probably no different than when they were first built.

Not physically but academically. What role does technology play in a private HBCU compared to a public HBCU?

Yup and go to the HBCU that has a good reputation in the degree program you are interested in

A&T - engineering and animal science

WSSU - nursing and health science

Bowie - cyber security

It’s a huge difference for sure. Technology requires funding at a much different level. It helps sustain the programs the requires advance technology. Without it, private school gets reduced general degree programs like business, some type of nursing program, and education programs. They don’t require advance technology.

A&T’s business program is incredible too. It’s the second most funded program behind engineering. They also got money coming in and their building is excellent.

I’m not sure how Winston had evolved, but I remember nursing, mass communication, and education being the biggest. I think they tried to push their computer science program, but I don’t know how its done over the last 20 years.

Any HBCU near the mid-Atlantic areas will be in good shape. There is so much culture and job opportunities around northern VA, DC, Baltimore, Philly, and Delaware that all the schools should thrive without much issue.

This sounds just like the situation Bennett College went through a few years ago.
Yeah, some of these old HBCUs are gonna have to go by the wayside.
They're getting no donations from alumni, nothing from the state, and a big part of their alumni base is aging out.

I keep hearing. I graduated from there 2004. St. Aug was great to me. Had the time of my life there.

I’ll add Clafflin to that list too. It’s a private school that has some solid programs and I believe they have one of the highest alum donation rates by percentages

FACTS.

That’s good to know about A&T and you are 100% right about the Mid Atlantic region.
