Saint Augustine's University is in a dire situation

I contribute to mine
This is where your money likely ended up:

I've been donating for years. The tricky part is how the money is spent. It's frustrating when the money doesn't get to the kids who need it or to raise educator pay. Meanwhile, somehow we done found some money to hire a DEI specialist at a black school....but I digress..
That shit is crazy. WTF do you need a "DEI specialist" for at an HBCU? Sounds like an excuse to push LGTB agendas. :smh:
I've lost count of how many scandals there have been involving mismanaging of funds at HBCUs over the years.
And saying "but so and so PWI college presidents do it too" doesn't excuse it.

That's crazy. I was supposed to go to St. Aug way back when. I even got accepted as an out-state-student. I just couldn't afford the tuition.

And this was back in the early 2000s. I can't imagine what those tuition bills look like today.

A lot of these schools should wise up and start selling online degrees like WGU. It’s the future of education.
The more progressive schools that understand this is the future do.

Winston Salem state has been offering undergrad and grad degrees online for years.

A lot of the schools you don’t hear in the news are already in this path.

I don't donate to either PWI I went too.
Yeah the PWI I attended for graduate school only gets money from me for a scholarship fund specifically for minorities. The school was great and even though it’s considered a PWI that school was more like a damn international school IMO.

I definitely donate to my HBCU. Doubled my contributions when my student loans were discharged.

Also these schools need to partner with local school districts and offer dual credit courses. The community college near me does dual credit with local districts. A 3 hour course is like a 150 bucks and you can transfer to any state of Texas college. Kids can graduate high school with 60 credit hours and even certificate programs. Its kids graduating with CNA, Medical Assistant, Welding, Automotive, and EMT certificates and can enter the work force asap. Some might say making 35k ain't no money but for a 20 year old kids going to college thats great money with benefits.

Yeah that’s a good idea.

It wouldn’t surprise if there are some that are doing that. Like Claflin in Orangeburg SC has a program with inmates and helping them get a BS program.

Man I get so fuckin heated. We literally have trunk parties, cookouts, pass-the-hat type of functions, anything you can imagine to get these kids started down there and set up for success, only to be met with bullshit for the administrations. Working people are giving their last dollars for these kids only to be met with dysfunction and indifference at the admin level. Has anyone been to the Financial Aid office at an HBCU? Man....my lord...and this is supposed to me government money, the easy shit....let me stop.

You are making too much sense. The exchange rate from a community course to a BS/BA course is almost 2X per credit hour, meaning the BA/BS program will only accept about half of your associate degree courses. And mind you, the game is already stacked because the PWI's are poaching your students and your courses...

Judge Approves $577 Million Settlement For Maryland HBCUs

baltimore
May 13, 2021 / 9:46 AM EDT / CBS Baltimore

ANNAPOLIS (AP) — A federal judge has approved a $577 million settlement in a lawsuit over underfunding at Maryland's four historically Black colleges and universities.

The deal approved Wednesday will provide $555 million in extra funding over 10 years, beginning in 2023, for Bowie State University, Coppin State University, Morgan State University in Baltimore and the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore.

The total amount includes $22 million in legal costs for the plaintiffs who spent 15 years litigating these claims.

The lawsuit accused Maryland of underfunding the institutions while developing programs at traditionally white schools that directly competed with them, draining away prospective students.

In 2013, U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake found that the state had maintained "a dual and segregated education system" that violated the Constitution. Blake issued an order Wednesday stating the settlement adequately addresses the problem.

The funds are expected to go toward scholarships and financial aid as well as faculty recruitment and development. Funds also can be used to expand and improve existing academic programs, including online programs, and to develop and implement new academic programs.

The Maryland General Assembly passed legislation this spring finalizing the settlement. Republican Gov. Larry Hogan had vetoed a similar bill last year, saying he would approve no more than $200 million.

The school is fighting to maintain its accreditation and financial stability. They are about 8 mil in debt and students are leaving. I did contract work for this school. I did everything from setting up events, maintenance, security and working basketball and football games. I'm technically still a contractor for them but haven't worked there in over a year (was never paid on time :() I have many friends who are St. Aug alumni but all of them are struggling. Hopefully someone like Oprah can bail them out.

It's too many folks in the offices at these HBCUs hiring their friends and family and folks looking to fatten their pockets.
Damn shame.

Bro, when I was hooping at state, we went to St. Aug, which was my first time going there. Their gym share the same space as their theater stage. Straight old school shit. I was surprised that was a university. My high school gym was more modern than that.

They didn’t have enough seats, so nigs was standing everywhere. Don’t get me wrong, the charm of it all was nostalgic, but in hindsight it was the worst gym in the CIAA. Well, them an St. Paul University in Virginia. Whitaker gym was better and Whitaker was historic itself. Lol.
Yeah it's bad but I think Shaw University gym is the worst. I worked games there and seen B-ball players go to the lobby bathroom during the game. On the ground level of the gym has 3 locker rooms with one toilet :smh: I remember a Puerto Rican girls team played there they asked me where they could go to the restroom I sent them to the admin building next to the gym.

Damn

shut that school down :smh:
I’m from Raleigh. Man, the stories I could tell you :smh:
You have to take a criminal background check to apply. That should tell you all you need to know

My little brother was a knucklehead and that was the only school that accepted him. That school scared his ass straight. Nigga transferred to A&T after his freshman year. Made him get his mind right so he could go to a better school.

niggas get robbed at gunpoint on campus…..

Shaw is a shitty ass school
The football team has to walk across a busy ass street to get to footbal practice
Me and a few childhood friends turned down scholarships from that cake ass program

Not surprised since they are private. Not to be funny, but I never knew what the school was known for program and degree wise....

I remember going to a gym jam my freshman year and was like damn this school is in the hood and has a trash ass gym lol

Man…they have degree programs that don’t offer the classes needed to get the degree. Shit is WILD

Yep. I was helping community college students in Vance county transfer to 4 year schools. I was calling the registrar office of each college to make sure that certain classes transferred and whatnot …every school’s office answered the phone letting me know which department I was calling. When I called St. Augs the bitch said “hello”. When I asked if it was the registrar’s office, the bitch yelled at me with anger. I had to pause and hang up. The way she yelled at me…if she was in front of me, I would have hit her. All because I asked for clarification because she couldn’t properly answer the phone
