sold!Rumor: Is Ubisoft Working on a Western Style Far Cry Game?
![]()
E3 is nearly a month away, and rumors are circling around this time of the year as expected. It wouldn’t be a rumor if Ubisoft wasn’t involved, as nearly all of their games get leaked early. This year Assassin’s Creed wasn’t the only Ubisoft title talked about, as Far Cry has been getting some buzz recently. There hasn’t been a main Far Cry entry in the series since 2014 with Far Cry 4. With Far Cry Primal as more of a holdover than anything else. Its plausible for Ubisoft to be working on another Far Cry installment that’s not a spinoff.
Sources point that filming for an unannounced video game is currently being done outside of a church in the Montana prairie, a perfect setting for a western. The production for the shoot is said to have “stretched more than 5,000 miles from California to Montana.” A producer working on the shoot Jeff Guillot, said “this is a sequel to an existing global franchise.” Jeff Guillot has experience working on various ATL campaigns for Ubisoft, such games included are; Driver, Red Steel 2, and Rabbids. Guillot told the Great Falls Tribune the game “will be released in September”, and “is of a world that takes place in an imaginary location.” Furthermore adding “this is a sequel to an existing global franchise.”
The footage the production crew were shooting involved two men fighting near “a hanging bell as a train rolled by on the tracks a half-mile away.” It seems that the footage will be used to promote the game, this isn’t the first time Ubisoft has done a live action trailer for their games. One series in particular has been the Far Cry franchise. It makes sense for Ubisoft to be working on a teaser trailer for their E3 presentation, especially to announce a new Far Cry game. Could it be Far Cry 5, well it wouldn’t be that much of a stretch. Ubisoft even sent out a survey to a few Far Cry 4 players on what their “preferred setting” would be for a “future Far Cry game”. One of the poll options was described as “a Far Cry game in the Spaghetti Western style set in the late 19th century.”
The popular series is one of Ubisoft’s flagship IPs, and Far Cry 4 was released almost three years ago. So another entry would be overdue at this point for the publisher and developer. A western themed Far Cry game would certainly be cool to see, its a setting that not a lot of first person shooters get to see. All the evidence taken so far point to the next Far Cry being a western, or at the least to an unannounced game set during the Old West. We hope Ubisoft is indeed working on a Far Cry 5, and that its a Spaghetti Western style game.
