Veteran Detroit MC Royce Da 5’9 has topped the Billboard charts with his solo album Layers.

It seems like the rest of the world is finding out what Hip-Hop heads have known for a long time, Royce Da 5’9 is dope.

After a five year hiatus from releasing solo material, Royce has returned and claimed his first ever #1 album. Layers debuted at the top of the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart this week. Layers is his first album since 2011’s Success Is Certain. In the between time, Royce kept his name hot by releasing material as a member of Slaughterhouse [including Joe Budden, Joel Ortiz and Kxng Crooked], Bad Meets Evil [with Eminem] and PRyhme [with DJ Premier].

Royce has also gained momentum with this legendary showings in the Shady Records cyphers.

Layers has features from Rick Ross and Pusha T as well as production from Mr. Porter, Jake One, Nottz and DJ Khalil. The album knocked pop princess Rihanna’s ANTI out of the top spot. The album also debuted in the Top 10 of three additional charts including Billboard’s Rap Albums chart (#2), Independent Albums chart (#4), and the Digital Albums chart (#10

Why it got to be east vs south west or whatever... Listen to the music you like fuck the region and shut the fuck up.

Does Billboard charts really have any significance? Have they figured out who's legally downloading music to a science? Between the illegal download and sharing going on, how are they still relevant?

Anyhoo... props to Royce Da 5'9 for making it to the top of the list.

I think the south gets so much hate because they haven't progressed as lyricists. You got The Doc, Scarface, 3000, and Cee lo. That's it.... You can like UGK, 8 - ball, No limit, Cash Money but let's face it.... They sound good with the music but their rhymes are not comparable to the east coast artists that set the standard. Southern music is better than the rappers half the time. I like TI, Mystical but even their rhymes aren't better than Big Pun and he isn't considered the NY Goat. Little Wayne is Gillie the Kid Jr.

DETROIT stand up one time fo' da '99 I ain't got the time blow a dime lotta crime rob ya blin-

oh yeah...

it's 2016... sooo scrap all that

That's what I'm saying. The business doesn't care about regions anymore. Everything is homogenized and follows the same cookie cutter formula. Same look, same style, same beats.

Jcole is a southern artist and he's lyricist.

Not cool with the region slighting, but I agree 1 million % on mush mouth autistic sounding tard rap bullshit that is flooding the radio and video waves and dragging down the art. Respect all regions, North, South, East, and West.

Congrats to Royce. It's good to see an actual lyricist sell.
With that said Panda is still the #1 song in the country right now.
