Question about Nas' Ether...

Even though this debate is hella old, I'll drop my change also.

What made the disses both valid, is that both songs accomplished their mission: tore into the other's ego.

Jay: Dude tore into dude with the facts. No need for jokes. And he spoke on everything everyone else shied away from stating.

Nas: He would've taken a L if he decided to defend his albums. They did suck. So he went on Jay's weakness: the truth of his past. Jay put his soul into his albums. Nas, to me, was a reporter---seemed to keep his business out of his music. So, playing dude on what he already admitting was a win. I think teasing was his card even though his lyrics were forced. Aside from the rhyme scheme and chorus, those were his worst lyrics (one of them--he got garbage also).

This has gone down hill quick. Very quick. What did Jay spit on takeover about Nas that was straight factual?

He fucked his baby moms (implied it on the end).

He paid searchlite publishing (was Nas getting fucked for his publishing)? Probably..maybe who knows - how is that fact?

He showed the tech while with Large Professor (was it the first tech nas has seen? Maybe. Nas did rap about a tech on the dresser - for the benefit of the doubt lets say it was the first tech he had ever seen. Then without ever seeing one again, Nas raps about it on Illmatic.

See. That's the problem, how can you say Takeover was all facts. Jay had his opinion on Nas' albums and his verses. 1 HOT ABLUM in 10 years. It was a tight line...but some people will agree others will disagree.

Shit..I thought his first three were tight. And the shit off the lost tapes (during those years were classic). But his fourth joint was pure ass.

Im gonna give you the breakdown. Jay came with takeover. It was a song with a tight beat on a great album. Lyrics were funny cause that was the perception of Nas (though we have finally figured out that It was written was nice as hell, just not illmatic).

Nas came back, we thought he was gone, and reminded us that dude was nice on an album that was tight as hell. Said some shit about Jay that was the perception (claimed to be better than big, wanted to be like Puff and Big with Dame). Now we realize he wanted to be like Russell.

Jay gets angry puts out super ugly = women think it crossed the line = killing his fan base. Most ninjas realize you can't control your baby moms/a hoe after you fucked her and moved on to other hoes.

Couple more disses (Jay's actions show that he kinda lost - blueprint 2, Ill keep dissing you annually/Nas puts out last real nigga alive- moving on)

Nas won the battle = revived his career = hip hop won. Then everybody wanted to get rich with battling without the skillz and hip hop lost.

That was a wrap up of 2001 - 2009.

Again, another cop out for Nas enthusiast. Takeover was leaked in the streets and was on mixtapes all over the place in early to mid 2001. Ether didn't drop until December 2001. Took homie about 6 months to drop this cut and all he came back with was big lip and gay jokes. Maybe I just expected way more from Nas since I've been a fan since Illmatic.

No one decided the beef was over. Blueprint 2 was not a hit after the bell. Yet people who want to award Nas the victory choose to ignore this for that very reason. It's kinda weak. It's like someone losing the first round, coming back and winning the 2nd round, and choosing to ignore round 3 and every round after because they lost those.

This aint exactly true. Takeover dropped in the summer of 2001. Nas actually made the first move on the stillmatic diss track which dropped in the spring of 2001. The was in response to Memphis Bleek's diss but instead of going at Bleek, he went at the whole Roc.
