Question about Nas' Ether...

The club thing with Jay & Pun happened upstate, but no bottles to the head if I remember correctly from my boys who used to roll with TS.
Pun may have grabbed a bottle or something and put it against jay's head.

Anyone with sense knows:

Jay won the war.

If Pun hit Jay over the head with a bottle where is the scar?

Why wouldnt Fat Joe or ANYONE from TS just admit to it!!

How come they are so scared to say it.

It has been 20 years!

yeah there may have been an altercation maybe pun even swung at him with the bottle, but i doubt it landed on Jay's head. I think many have bent the truth regarding the incident.

when i first heard it back in 2001... i declared that nas won the battle... i was in 8th grade then and the cats in my class was all over jay team like "he will slaughter nas" but i wasnt looking at it as a popularity contest... i looked at it from a non biased hip hop head perspective also a street perspective too... i feel like the FANS and MAINSTREAM media rolled with jay... but the streets had sided with nas....

i always felt nas won... and i also felt that ether was incomplete... over the past decade i have came across tons of stories from niggas from NY and people that i know thats close to the industry that there were tons of lost verses from ether that nas spoke on big pun smacking jay with a bottle deeper in to the relationship with dame... and other things that the label heads claim couldnt be released because it would of destroyed jays career and he may not be who he is today

does anybody have any info or truth on this? especially my NY niggas... yall will know more than anybody...

I always thought Jay won, I guess that Blueprint album was so dope and the Roc was coming with it. I think all those who say Nas won were simply on some root for the under dog type shyt. either was dope, but as I listen to it today, the 3rd verse made the song

"
Y'all niggas deal with emotions like bitches
What's sad is I love you 'cause you're my brother
You traded your soul for riches
My child, I've watched you grow up to be famous
And now I smile like a proud dad, watching his only son that made it
You seem to be only concerned with dissing women
Were you abused as a child, scared to smile, they called you ugly?
Well life is hard, hug me, don't reject me
Or make records to disrespect me, blatent or indirectly
In '88 you was getting chased through your building
Calling my crib and I ain't even give you my numbers
All I did was gave you a style for you to run with
Smiling in my face, glad to break bread with the god
Wearing Jaz chains, no tecs, no cash, no cars
No jail bars Jigga, no pies, no case
Just Hawaiian shirts, hanging with little Chase
You a fan, a phony, a fake, a pussy, a Stan
I still whip your ass, you thirty-six in a karate class
You Tae-bo hoe, tryna' work it out, you tryna' get brolic?
Ask me if I'm tryna' kick knowledge
Nah, I'm tryna' kick the shit you need to learn though
That ether, that shit that make your soul burn slow
Is he Dame Diddy, Dame Daddy or Dame Dummy?
Oh, I get it, you Biggie and he's Puffy"

if it wasn't for that one verse, that shyt may have ended nas's career.

Because so many were jealous of Jay and disliked him for many reasons i thought all that led to people saying Nas won, all the under dog cats, its like all the boroughs were going to team up to try to overthrow Brooklyn or some shyt. I remember up in Queens that summer ngz was talking greasy bout Jay, but they had all his tapes. I remember all the dj's were saying Nas won, etc...its like Jay had become too Hollywood in the eyes of the streets or something. Because album wise, money wise, business wise, career wise, etc.... Jay was definitely winning the competition. Not knocking Nas, I fks with a lot of his shyt, but his overall beat selection held him back in the race for NY after Biggie passed.

to the op, i'm not buying that bs about the record label thought the nas verse would end jay's career so they cut it. that's bull shyt just like how bgolers and espn analysts always talk shyt about this person playing chest, giving way too much credit for no reason. After jay talked about having sex with Carmen why would Columbia not allow Nas to unleash? Jay tried to destroy their artist....You mentioning family and wives so anything is fair game now. If the verse was out there or a fact why wasn't it released at least after superugly track dropped.:smh:

I actually listened to Ether recently and now I think Jay didn't lose that one.

Ether is just filled with a bunch of anger and gay-z lines

is that lyrical?

Damn Pac KILLED dissing BIG with jacking that beat and talking DIRECTLY to BIG

and them.

damn Jay is FAMOUS for destroying dudes with ONE LINE

The boy ended throwbacks and that "this is why im hot " kid in an interview:lol:

I listened to Super Ugly (which was all true) and Blueprint² where he says

"Can't y'all, see that he's fake, the rap version of TD Jakes
Prophesizing on your CDs and tapes
Won't break you a crumb of the little bit that he makes
And this is with whom you want to place your faith?
I put dollars on mine, ask Columbine
When the Twin Towers dropped, I was the first in line (That's real!)
Donating proceeds off every ticket sold
When I was out on the road, that's how you judge Hov, no?
Ain't I supposed to be absorbed myself?
Every time there's a tragedy, I'm the first one to help
They call me this misogynist, but they don't call me the dude
To take his dollars to give gifts at the projects
These dudes is all politics, depositing checks
They put in they pocket, all you get in return is a lot of lip (yap, yap, yap!)
And y'all buy the shit, caught up in the hype
Cause the nigga wear a kufi, it don't mean that he bright
Cause you don't understand him, it don't mean that he nice

It just means you don't understand all the bullshit that he write
Is it "Oochie Wally Wally" or is it "One Mic"?
Is it "Black Girl Lost" or shorty owe you for ice?

I've been real all my life, they confuse it with conceit
Since I will not lose, they try to help him cheat
But I will not lose, for even in defeat
There's a valuable lesson learned, so it evens up for me
When the grass is cut, the snakes will show
I gotta thank the little homie Nas for that though
Saving me the hassle of speaking to half of these assholes
And I'mma let karma catch up to Jaz-O, whoa
I'm back before you had a chance to miss me
My mama can't save you this time, niggas is history
Who you know flow vicious as me?
Yet so religiously, that's why they call me Hov
I get the spoils cause the victor is me (me, nigga)
You're an actor, you're not who you're depicted to be
You're street dreamin, all y'all niggas living through me
I gave you life when niggas was forgetting you emcee

I'm a legend, you should take a picture with me
You should be happy to be in my presence, I should charge you a fee
I'm Big Dog, Glenn Rob, listen God you a flea
And the little homey Jungle is a garden to me
What's the problem B? You not as hard as me
Nigga hard as we, nigga R O C, nigga
That's why they follow me, they feel my pain and my agony, nigga
I won't rest till you on one knee
You want war then it's war's gonna be, nigga

Exactly. that nigga Nas gave Jay an old school roast like they were in highschool. to quote Jay...

Jay made it a hot line,
Nas made it a hot song...

As the Bubble Lip brigade dons their armor and prepares for battle, I refuse to get into yet another silly convo to prove Nas>Jay.

Niggas acting like Nas career is dead is out in Times Square robbing and stealing to make ends meet.

BTW, look out for another classic this summer.

Personally that was my favorite line. I like both artists. but i think eminem wouldve killed either in a battle but maybe thats my Detroit bias. The line when nas referenced "renegade" and said "eminem killed you on your own shit" was kinda wild cause renegade was actually royce and em jay jus took the track and still couldnt keep up with him. I jus enjoy the art of the battle. there needs to be more battles amoungst top emcees not beefs jus battles. in all honesty royce and em "renagade>>>>>>>>>jay and em renegade

Jay should have never came back with the Super Ugly response. He killed Nas with 1 verse on a 4 verse song going in on 3 other MC's and all Nas did a whole 5 min songs with one liners......Her pretty muched did it again with the verse above and the hidden track on his MTV Unplugged album but at the end of the day he did charge him a fee when he added him to the Def Jam roster ahahahahahahahahahah gotta love it

This. Jay was making so much noise back then that people were gonna ride with Nas anyway. Especially in NYC. Ether was a dope track, but it just wasnt the best track IMO. To me, the whole gay jokes shit was funny but a weak ass response. This dude aired out you and your baby mom situation and you came back talking about his lips? Again, just my opinion, I'm not trying to sway anyone else, but Blueprint 2 was the best track out of the whole battle. That shit had to hit HOME.

This is so true and something I've been saying for 10 years now. Nas was a cat everyone liked but he fell off. He was nowhere to be seen. People hated Jigga cuz he was an arrogant asshole and people resented him cuz they felt he was riding off of Biggie's nuts. In the late 90's it was easy to hate Jigga. His face was everywhere. He was a braggart. But no one wanted to say anything. But in comes Nas with Ether. I think people just loved the fact that someone stood up to Jigga...and of all guys.. Nas. I don't think Jigga ever had a chance. Nas could have put out 2 verses and folk would declare Nas the victor. It's weird though, Nas has been given the benefit of the doubt where Jigga hasn't. All of a sudden Nas has these classified disses that were just too deadly that he didn't release them . I heard Jigga had a whole bunch of shit on Nas but decided no to release it cuz Nas would be 6 feet deep right now . See how dumb this shit sounds?

Jigga was right about Nas being a simp (Kelis) and being a phony and dropping wack records, but it didn't matter. When the public is sick of you, you're done. Doesn't matter how valid your arguments are. Jigga won because his career went to another level, hell, didn't he even employ Nas? LOL. He married Beyonce, part owner of an NBA team and doing shows with U2. Nas fell back into obscurity, is paying Kelis through his ass and just put out a brick with Damian Marley.

Ether was hot though.

Jay came out with BP2 far too late though. At that point he looked like a sore loser. Beef was stale for a while before that.

Again, another cop out for Nas enthusiast. Takeover was leaked in the streets and was on mixtapes all over the place in early to mid 2001. Ether didn't drop until December 2001. Took homie about 6 months to drop this cut and all he came back with was big lip and gay jokes. Maybe I just expected way more from Nas since I've been a fan since Illmatic.

No one decided the beef was over. Blueprint 2 was not a hit after the bell. Yet people who want to award Nas the victory choose to ignore this for that very reason. It's kinda weak. It's like someone losing the first round, coming back and winning the 2nd round, and choosing to ignore round 3 and every round after because they lost those.

For what it's worth, I've been a Nas fan since It Was Written and I could never stand Jay-Z but put it into perspective.

Nas dedicated a WHOLE song to Jay-Z.

Jay-Z dedicated ONE verse to Nas and Takeover was nothing but the truth while Nas (although entertaining) made childish insults.

Now, when Jay-Z made Superugly, that's when I felt he lost because Ether got to him hard and Nas didn't respond since.

BUT.... Nas signed to Def Jam while Jay-Z was president.

So who really won?

Its true that NY cats exaggerate!!

I'm from Hampton VA, and I used to hang around these two dudes that came down every summer from NY. It was Allen Iverson's rookie year, and they sweared to God there was a dude in NY better than Iverson and Jordan, and he was going to Fresno State!! I told them I had never heard of him!!

It turn out to be Skip to My Lou (Rafer Alston):hmm::lol:

 You always hear that. You probably could go to Chicago or Oakland and hear the same thing.

Raef didn't have the athleticism or speed that a lot of NBA players had, and him and Shamgod shooting :smh:

I always wondered how a straight man could call amother mans lip DSL. :smh::smh:

Nas lost all he did was say ugly jokes

This is how I took it.

Nas' shit was fictional and gay. I'm not from the school of joking another mans appearance, that shits gay. He looks like a camel but he fucked your baby moms? Plus Premo was talking about they were up in the studio like say this about him. I don't know, Nas never seemed like a funny dude to me, so I always thought a lot of shit were jokes his boys were telling him to say.

Jay-Z's shit was true.

And I hate this below the waste shit. Are their rules to dissing? The only shit I felt was untouchable and in poor taste was when Cam said he'd R Kelly his daughters face. The rest of the shit, is all fair. Dude didn't say he threw the condom in his daughters face. Nobody said that shit when Tupac did Hit'em Up.

The thing I hated about Super Ugly was the fuckin beat, I always hated that fuckin song. Ether was more menacing and fit.

Plus in general, most of the time, people root for the underdog. There was a huge anti Jay-Z conglomerate out there. It was like the Lakers. They have a huge fanbase, but they also spark a lot of hate.

*agent smith voice* more...
Thats pretty much all we may ever know on that subject unless Nas or someone who was in studio when he recorded the tracks names names. He called it "Football" (after the suitcase the President has which holds the codes to the nuclear weapons), said it would be like a bomb went off in the music industry if he dropped it. Said he went hard at all parties he felt had disrespected him in the past. And people were scared shitless that he would release the song. Again, this was during the time when he lost his mom.
Anyone with sense knows:

Jay won the war.

If Pun hit Jay over the head with a bottle where is the scar?
What war? It wasnt on no east vs west nonsense. It was a rap battle. And like you say. Nas won. Anyone using the war slogan are just trying to make themselves feel better about the L that Jay took. Jays current success doesnt erase the lumps Nas gave him. They went head up, Jay lost. Period. Jay even admits it.

Shit, in 4th grade, i got my ass whupped by a cat who i can buy and sell twice right now. None of that erases the fact that he kicked my ass when we fought.

Nas lost all he did was say ugly jokes
You're full of shit. There were like two ugly references in an entire song full of legitimate disses that questioned everything from Jays, Integrity, Loyalty, Skillset, Originality, Streetcred to his Player persona.

Again, even Jay admitted he lost that one. His fans should just accept it and move in. Its been nearly a decade man.

I like both Nas and Jigga. Hell, I like Jigga even more than I do Nas. I'm just calling it how I see it. I think Jigga should have come with BP2 far sooner. He also came off looking sore..."But I do this and that for the community, he doesn't (cry)". Looked weak. And all this after he looked defeated crying on the radio. The full version of Takeover was still released in the summer. Ether came out soon after... plus Nas had to respond. Jay didn't have to respond when it was declared that he lost. It was done with. There's no denying Ether hurt Jay. Takeover/Super Ugly/BP2 didn't seem to have much impact on Nas.

Nas sonned the hell out of Jay in that whole album (Stillmatic). Jay could have recorded the greatest diss track ever, it wouldn't have made a difference. Everyone was rooting for the underdog (Nas).

This is where you and I disagree. The actual song isn't what hurt Jay. There was nothing in the track but gay jokes and one man judging another man's looks. The response people had to the track is what hurt Jay. "Since I will not lose they try to help him cheat" is what hurt Jay. Coming to the conclusion that folks were going to ride with Nas is what upset him. I've yet to see anyone explain what exactly in the actual song "hurt" Jay.

And your facts are wrong with when Takeover and Ether was released. Ether wasn't released until December 18, 2001. I also think it's ironic how you think none of Jay's songs had an effect on Nas, yet you think Ether "hurt" Jay. This is more bias than actual fact.

 @ Jay winning Nas roasted the hell out of him with ether, it had people looking at Jay like :itsawrap:

Jay was on the radio cryin man.

I always felt that "Ether" was better than
"The Take Over" BUT Jay-Z Still Won in the End

Many Of My Friends Felt The Same

FYI - He wasn't "Crying" on the Radio Jay has that
voice that seems to shake or sound nervous when
He talks

No Jay wasn't crying but he sure wasn't his usual confident self. You can tell he was "hurt" by his responses to her questions and more importantly by how Angie was speaking to him and everyone knows she is a big Jay Z stan.

Curious what exactly "roasted the hell" out of Jay. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy Ether. It's a good song and the beat is crazy. Plus I was happy it kinda resurrected Nas' career because that Nastradamus shit was TRASH. So it was a good look for hiphop in general. But Nas fans, or people who don't like Jay Z sure like to embellish what happened. But then again, if you're amused by gay jokes I could see how Ether would be the best shit ever.

Right. I believe the word Jay-Z used to describe Ether was "vulgar." And the word he used describe how it made him feel was "uneasy."
