I'll take Prince's "longevity" over MJ's. Prince has been putting out consistent (and diverse) product for 30 years. MJ's output (nevermind its quality) has been sporadic at best, and virtually non-existent over the last 18 years. There's no comparison in terms of musical artists. One is a serious, profoundly talented ROCK/R&B singer/songwriter/multi-intrumentalist/stage performer and the other is a lightweight pop icon, whose disturbing eccentricity ultimately dwarfed his talent.

Tupac actually had the right idea in trying to move up the chain with thinking of working with Quincy Jones in his last days. R and B and "urban" music was never the same once that east coast/west coast thing took over the music scene imo and both MJ and Prince fell victim to the times as well as all the greats such as Stevie Wonder(although his last effort incorporated some of today's new dance). MJ's problem was that he got a bit too weird for people to follow without having a second thought(happened around Bad imo with his makeover and hurt him since). The exact same thing with Prince imo. That 80's type aura and look was not going to get over in the "street" era of the 90's of baggy jeans and timb boots.
I also think Prince did not utilize hip hop when it was rising either in the 90's. There was a reason why rap and b took over with the likes of Puffy's vision with Jodeci and Biggie.

Yes, MJ and Prince aren't hip hop or rap, but imo music is about connecting with people. MJ especially made music that people of all kinds could relate to. MJ has sold more records than any other artists combined as well with the exception of Elvis, Beatles, and Eagles. It doesn't take away the fact that those same artists were not selling records like the hip hop revolution in the 90's.
I'm a huge MJ fan, but even I have to admit when he returned with Invincible the MJ magic was not the same in terms of music or impact. Let's not forget MJ did a dud with that album in terms of his stature. Groups like Bon Jovi and other genres have years of built in loyalty. How much units sold include their catalog? An example would be Elvis. He sells like crazy, but is he connecting with TODAY's market?
All those people who bought MJ records in the past all didn't die and were always there. However, a whole new brand came out where they missed out imo. The actual content of the music is what I'm referring to.
It's no coincidence that MJ changed up somewhat in the 90's with songs like Scream and They Don't Care about us(content and cursing) because music tastes changed. You are right MJ and Prince didn't have to change to sell music because their fan-base is already huge, but I was more talking on how MJ's passion to be the KING of MUSIC. Quincy Jones stated that when MJ made Thriller he deliberately wanted songs that could fall into different categories such as Billie Jean (R and B) and Beat It (Rock). I just think if MJ worked with the likes of Dre and those who were hot at the time he could have at least maintained the Bad level of success(Dangerous was better than Bad to many people though). In other words did what his sister Janet did working with people like Busta Rhymes.
Interesting that Madonna is #1 as she is noted as being one of the very few artists who always re-invent themselves. For instance jumping on the Britney Spears bandwagon with that kiss on the MTV show. She's also known for jumping on every new fad since the 80's too.
