‘Grey's Anatomy’ Star Jesse Williams Blasts Police Over ‘Plantation Vibe’ at Ferguson October Protests (Exclusive)

Jesse-Williams-Protests-in-Ferguson.jpg

In a far-ranging Wrap interview about his three days in Missouri, the actor also calls on Hollywood “to be more inclusive” in casting

“Grey's Anatomy” actor Jesse Williams says the St. Louis area has a serious race problem and he experienced it firsthand.

Williams traveled to Missouri on Oct. 11 and spent three days taking part in a series of protests dubbed “Ferguson October” and “Weekend of Resistance.”

“I was actually astonished to be perfectly honest,” Williams told TheWrap in an exclusive interview. “The cops were really, really nasty, unnecessarily antagonizing people. It really creates a kind of plantation vibe – with people patrolling and literally in waves, beating their baton sticks against their hands, like they're ready to deliver an ass whooping and enjoying it.”

The gatherings stretched about 12 miles from Ferguson to the Shaw neighborhood of St. Louis, with protesters demanding that Darren Wilson, the police officer who killed unarmed African-American teenager Michael Brown, be charged with a crime.

Brown, 18, was fatally shot Aug. 9 by a white officer, later identified as Wilson. The Ferguson Police Department said Wilson stopped Brown because the teen and a friend were walking in the middle of the street, and that Brown tried to steal the officer's gun in an altercation that followed. However, several witnesses contradicted the official version of what happened, saying Wilson shot Brown as the teen surrendered with his hands up.

Two months after the shooting, a grand jury is still trying to determine if officer Wilson should face criminal charges — something Williams says reeks of racism.

“It's not simply about a cop killed Mike Brown. Cops kill people all the time,” the actor said. “What is really garnering outrage and people feeling really helpless and hopeless is that the legal system, the public servants that have been elected or financed by our tax dollars, literally don't care and are doing nothing about it.”

Ferguson-October-Police.jpg

Some of the protesters traveled from as far away as California and New York, including activist and academic Cornel West and rapper Talib Kweli. As the demonstrations got underway, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Chief Sam Dotson tweeted: “We support the right to free speech & lawful assembly.”

But Williams claims the police in both St. Louis and Ferguson were far from welcoming. “There was an antagonistic, instigatory nature to the police behavior … Several times, just people walking around, not even in massive protest, just walking on the street, police shining lights in their faces, antagonizing them, snickering at them, laughing, taunting them, yelling at them to ‘go home,'” he said.

Late Saturday night, Dotson tweeted that protesters outside a gas station were breaking the law. “Protestors attempting to storm Quicktrip [sic] at Vandeventer & Chouteau. All protestors engaging in illegal behavior will be subject to arrest,” he wrote.

Ferguson-October-Protesters.jpg

But Williams accused Dotson of stretching the truth. “I was there. They weren't storming the QuikTrip … they were sitting down.”

According to local media reports, police in riot gear responded and used pepper spray to disperse the crowd. Dotson announced 17 people had been arrested for unlawful assembly.

Neither the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department nor the Ferguson Police Department responded to TheWrap's repeated requests for comment.

Williams said despite some obvious tensions with police officers, there was also a sense of unity at the gatherings. ”What I was really warmed by is the incredible outpouring of white and Asian and Latin supporters and protesters there,” he said.

The actor — who said he went to Missouri out of love and to make a difference — frequently speaks out on social issues. He is on the board of directors for the civil rights organization Advancement Project and he's involved with Harry Belafonte's organization Sankofa, which encourages artists and performers to use their celebrity to bring attention to pressing social issues. And he took a video crew to Ferguson to record segments for Question Bridge — a media project that uses videos, art installations and the Internet to encourage dialogue between black men.

“I brought a team out there to be able to archive the perspective of folks there, what questions people are asking, what their concerns are and what internally people are discussing as ways out of this mess.”

Williams then called on Hollywood to pay more attention to what's happening in Missouri and use it as an opportunity to learn and be more inclusive.

Exodus-Gods-and-Kings-Scene.jpg

“I'd like Hollywood to take a real look at the small steps, the small gestures that they can take. We don't need every movie and every TV show to have six white leads,” he said.

The Chicago native also took issue with casting choices in the 2014 films “Noah,” which starred Russell Crowe and the upcoming “Exodus: Gods and Kings,” which features Christian Bale and Australian actor Joel Edgerton.

Williams said, “Instead of making all white ‘Noah's,' when it would be physically impossible for all those people to be white, or ‘Exodus’ when we know for a fact that the Egyptians were not white, Rhamses and Moses are all white, while the slaves and the servants and the thieves are black. That's racism.”

Williams suggested such casting choices can do long-term harm.

“It's damaging, it hurts people,” he told TheWrap. “It makes people consistently believe in white supremacy and it makes people very easily accept that Mike Brown might have been a thug, or Trayvon [Martin] was a thug, or Jordan Davis was a thug, because black people are constantly portrayed in a negative, aggressive, hyper-sexualized, aggressive, seething light.”

Williams ended by encouraging Hollywood to make more inclusive casting choices. ”If we can't even have our own empire, which Egypt was, they take that from us — you get the Prince of Persia and you get Egypt now? It's getting vitriolic and nasty.”

You shouldn't have to worry about your job when speaking up for people's rights. That's a system of continuing compliance and acceptance of wrongdoing. You don't lose your job sticking up for gays or jews...but to say there's serious abuse of policing power in black communities puts your job in jeopardy?...that's bullshit.

It's sad the majority of America is happy with being well uninformed by the mainstream media. I know my philosophy professor would be happy to see us questioning everything. "Believe half of what you see, and none of what you hear" is in full effect with the media today.
Nah bruh
They are happy with racism.

Everything else it's just smoke and mirrors. 2014 no one has a valid excuse anymore.

It is good for him to get a no bill at the grand jury. Right for George Zimmerman and Darren Wilson, it would be better in prison, than being free, not knowing if somebody acts on their threats.

Has there ever been dash cam footage released?

If so what's there excuse for not releasing it or the audio of it?

for the mike brown murder? bruh, there are no dash cams on the patrol cars there. that is the great hypocracy, the had tanks and enough military gear to go toe to toe with isis...but no dash cams

i am hearing that the cop will not be indicted and they are slowly moving in more equipment and man power to preside over the impending state of martial law that is on the horizon. :smh:

they are prolly gonna wait until the WS is over....and all of the world series media leaves town...so that it will not tarnish nearby KC Royals' moment in the international spotlight.

THOSE WHO FORGET THE PAST ARE DOOMED TO REPEAT IT. If they even have any thoughts about letting him off then they only plan to do more of this type of killing later on. They planned to start killing us off on a mass scale then. Since this did not happen. Then we are in a grace period where we are given one last chance to be able to protect ourselves. Anybody not trying to get prepared are suicidal. And that is a fact.
Right now we got to think, why are any people in Jail or prison?? These people are killing in front of people even with witnesses they are to be promoted and rewarded for killing black males.

Protesters remain out in Ferguson

B0fsl-eCAAAeMij.jpg

Ferguson, Missouri (CNN) - This is the new normal in Ferguson: Protests, day and night, for more than 70 days now.

Sometimes it's hundreds of demonstrators, sometimes just a handful. But they're always outside the Ferguson Police Department, clamoring for the indictment of Officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of unarmed teenager Michael Brown.

And with new details about the investigation leaked, tensions are escalating.

On Monday night, St. Louis County police detained two protesters, including Missouri State Sen. Jamilah Nasheed. She was detained as she blocked traffic in the middle of the street while protesting outside the Police Department.

Now, there are fears about what could happen next. One protester put it succinctly:

"If there is not an indictment, excuse my French, all hell is going to break loose."

Governor launches initiative

Saying that "our streets cannot be battlefields," Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon launched the Ferguson Commission on Monday, the members of which he will announced in early November.

The commission will be charged with studying "the social and economic conditions underscored by the unrest" following Brown's shooting. It will then tap various experts to address issues like poverty, education and law enforcement before offering "recommendations for making this region a stronger, fairer place to live," Nixon said.

"When there has been a clear vision of a better future and a well-marked path for progress, protests have yielded lasting change. When there is only rage and despair, anguish and chaos follow," he said.

He likened the worries of African-American mothers to those of police officers' spouses, saying they both watch their loved ones leave each morning and wonder if they'll come home again.

There is too much violence and fear, he said, and too little hope and trust. But in the unrest that ensued after Brown's death, "thoughtful voices on all sides" have raised legitimate issues, Nixon said.

The governor expressed hope that the commission will be able to bring those issues to the forefront, but also noted that he was concerned that if the issues aren't addressed, the St. Louis area -- Missouri's economic engine -- could suffer severe damage.

"This work is not for the faint of heart. Make no mistake: There will be anger and conflict, fear and distrust," he said. "But to move forward, we must transcend anger and fear. We must move past pain and disappointment."

New details revealed

Nixon's remarks came four days after a newspaper reported that Brown's blood was found on the officer's uniform and inside his police car, law enforcement sources told CNN. Those sources corroborated details first reported by The New York Times.

"That tends to support any testimony that there was some kind of scuffle in the police car," said CNN legal analyst Danny Cevallos. "And if so, that tends to support Officer Wilson's testimony and his justification for using deadly force."

At least one of the wounds Brown suffered is consistent with a struggle and appeared to be fired at close range, according to a different source with first-hand knowledge of the investigation.

A private autopsy conducted for the Brown family showed that Brown had been shot at least six times, including twice in the head.

But Cevallos said the newly released details about Brown's blood on the officer's gun and on his uniform might only go so far in helping the officer's case.

"Ultimately, that officer will have to come up with justification not for firing his gun the first time, but for each and every bullet that came out of his firearm -- whether at the car or away from the car," he said.(****this should be the driving force****)

Brown's death is the subject of two inquiries: one by a St. Louis County grand jury considering whether Wilson should be charged, and the other by federal investigators looking into whether any civil rights violations occurred.

New details are just one piece of probe

Timing of the leak

As anticipation mounts over the grand jury's decision, the new details leaked by a federal source to The New York Times could be strategic, a former FBI official told CNN.

"It could be really for, in part, a beneficial purpose, to start leading those community leaders and those leading the protests to believe that there won't be an indictment," said Ron Hosko, former assistant director of the FBI Criminal Division.

"It may be over time, that will have a beneficial effect of no riots, no battles in the streets again."

Official autopsy results provide more insight into Michael Brown's death
Oct 22, 2014, 6:30am CDT

Official autopsy results show that Michael Brown was shot at close range in the hand and had been using marijuana at the time he was shot.

Two experts not involved in the case interpreted the documents for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The documents were originally prepared by the St. Louis County medical examiner, Dr. Michael Graham, and were not part of the official investigation.

Graham told the newspaper that the report "does support that there was a significant altercation at the car." This is in line with a source who told investigators that Brown struggled for Wilson's pistol inside his vehicle and Wilson fired the gun twice—once in the hand—before firing more shots that would kill Brown.

Sources also informed the Post-Dispatch that Brown's blood was found on Wilson's gun and Brown's skin tissue was on the driver's side of Wilson's vehicle.

A toxicology test was performed by St. Louis University laboratory and found tetrahydrocannabinol, THC, in Brown's blood and urine.

Most details from the official autopsy back up the family's private autopsy performed by nationally noted forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden. Baden, however, concluded that none of Brown's wounds appeared to have been from close-range shots.

Details have not been revealed from the third autopsy, which was separately ordered by federal officials.

Ferguson Protesters Anticipate Officer Wilson Not Be Charged

Added by Kimberly Ruble on October 21, 2014.
Saved under Headlines, Missouri, U.S.

Ferguson protesters anticipate Officer Darren Wilson will not be charged. He is the police officer who shot and killed Michael Brown, age 18, in August. They believe Wilson will not be indicted. Most of the demonstrators think that there will be widespread rioting if a grand jury decides to exonerate the police officer.

A group of about 100 individuals assembled on Monday near Florissant Road, with most wanting the arrest of Wilson, who killed Brown in Ferguson on Aug. 9. Two protesters, one of whom was a state senator, were booked into the county jail after they obstructed the street and would not move.

Wilson’s case is presently under evaluation by a St. Louis County jury, which has until Jan. of 2015 to choose whether they plan to charge Wilson or not. The jury is currently accepting evidence about the case on the identical schedule as law enforcement. However, police are investigating independently.

As the demonstrations which started soon after Brown’s death continue on into autumn, the masses have thinned out and the nationwide media attendance has all but faded away. The military-esque vehicles that were commonly seen as a response to protesters have now changed. The automobiles have been replaced by law enforcement in regular police uniforms.

However, on Monday, in a parking lot that was near the police station, protesters delivered chants that appeared aimed toward the station. Several of the activists, as well as Ferguson officials, are getting ready for any news about Wilson’s outcome that may reactivate immense demonstrations all over the city. The protesters mostly believe Officer Wilson will not be charged. That conviction has been supported by several different news sources that state forensic evidence has backed up the police officer’s own personal account of his original struggle with the teenager.

One protester that refused to give her name stated that it would be a war if they did not indict Wilson. Early Monday evening, Missouri State Senator Jamilah Nasheed and a young man named Jefonte Nelson were both taken into custody. They each had been warned they were in violation of a Ferguson city ordinance and were told many different times to move from the street. They both failed to do so and were each arrested without incident. Nelson and Nasheed were both handed charges of walking along a street where sidewalks are available. They were released from jail on Tuesday.

The majority of demonstrators told the news media that they were not impressed with Nasheed’s arrest. They felt it was nothing but a publicity stunt. Nasheed claimed that she was trying to present a message that people did not have to participate in fierce protests. However, it was reported that she was carrying a 9 mm handgun when she was arrested.

When a preacher attempted to update the crowd about Nasheed’s arrest, he was disturbed by other protesters who told him they did not care about the Senator and informed him to “shut the h*ll up.” On Tuesday, citizens of Ferguson planned on gathering in a meeting hosted by a partition of the Justice Department that aids in soothing pressures in separated societies. They may be the only hope Ferguson has at the moment. In the long run, the answer will depend on what the grand jury decides in Officer Wilson’s situation.

If they do not charge him they need to start letting people out of prison and jail. We stood by while America and N.A.T.O committed genocide against blacks in Libya. Now they are arming police depts. and white citizens to kill us off here in America and be rewarded and promoted for it.

Any blacks that are not trying to separate and organize are suicidal. Only the real Messiah can save us now. All of us black males are on deck to be next.

We know that evidence can be planned. With no one taking an incident report right away, they had plenty of time to coach him and work their lies around what they have to work with. This is the first case I have ever seen where they come in taking cell phones and cameras, and disregarding key witnesses. And the first case where important people in the case are not held responsible for the jobs they are paid to do. It is like the deep south. They are in positions to become God around poor blacks.

How long will he be kept away from talking to the public to make sure he do not make any mistakes on what he says? Zimmerman is amongst us rubbing that incident in our face after all the money he went thru because of his kill. And there are some powerful people involved in this case just like it was in the Zimmerman case. The pentagon provided the military equipment. And I believe they are helping with the support of Wilson. They did Leveana Johnson like she was just a dog.

On derrick bozeman's show here in Atlanta, they were saying that they need to take this case and the actions of the police in that city and present it to THE United Nations and seek justice under international laws.

Why is thc being in his system an issue? You can go to any college campus in the world and you wont have students grabbing for cop's guns. I've never reached for a cop's gun when high...99.9999% of people haven't.

:smh:

on CNN they said that it is very difficult for someone other than the gun owner to remove that gun from the holster.

So how would Mike Brown have known:

1. where the gun was (the left or right side of the officer's waist)
2. how to remove it from the holster in a swift manner (without owning that type of holster or maybe even a gun)

if he had never seen the officer and known which side of his body that he placed the gun on and how to remove the weapon WHILE IN A STRUGGLE FOR HIS LIFE so quickly?
:hmm:

Washington Post on that bullshit... Headline of this new information reads

NEW AUTOPSY SHOWS MIKE BROWN MAY HAVE GONE FOR WILSON'S GUN

Wilson is going with the story that he stopped them because their clothes match the description of someone that robbed a store. That was Wilson's testimony to the grand jury.

These mufuccas aren't even trying anymore. No need to cover up shit. It's just out in the open. They don't give a fuck about contradicting themselves. Why bother? They're telling us any old bullshit because they know they're gonna no bill Darren Wilson.

This is about to get very ugly.....

I’m just out here working hard every single day, just trying to be the best poster I can be....

Here's the article:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...l-brown-may-have-gone-for-darren-wilsons-gun/

And in it we find this little gem which again flies directly in the face of what the commanding officer said on television:

Early Wednesday, the Post-Dispatch*published Wilson’s*most detailed account*yet, according to an unnamed source with knowledge of his statements to police.

According to the source, Wilson saw Brown and his friend, Dorian Johnson, walking down the middle of Canfield Drive. Wilson noticed Johnson’s clothing matched the description of a suspect who had just robbed an area market where cigarillos were stolen. Brown was carrying cigarillos in his hand.

Wilson reportedly told investigators that when he tried to get out of the vehicle, Brown slammed the door on him and punched him in the face. Wilson drew his weapon and a struggle ensued.

The source said the first time Wilson tried to shoot, the gun didn’t fire. The second time, it did.

Like I said no reason to attempt to cover up anything. They just don't give a fuck.

Let's look at this...

The truck Wilson was driving with his gun on right side.

Seem like in order for Brown to reach the gun he would've been, somewhat in the window.

If Brown was beating the fuck outta Wilson, I don't see any reason for him to be inside the truck. I'm pretty sure he would land clean shots from outside.

Why in the fuck would Brown reach for the gun...(the lawyer, police department whoever did something when they came up with that statement)

This should let people know that a lot of stuff you read in the news is lies. We got a black president that is with these whites in killing off blacks. Not that I believe in the white house. That is why I have been busy trying to build a black house.
They planned the genocide of blacks in Libya. And a lot of people know nothing about it. So we are not to blame for still following white power and continuing to support white power.
Check out this whole video on Panama.

On the first autopsy they said he did not have any drugs in his system. These people lie as easy as they breathe. And right how any black that is not trying to organize and get out of what we are in is suicidal. We are on deck to be next somewhere on down the road. And just like the blacks in South Africa working every day to empower a system of white supremacy over the lives of the masses, while they gun you down when there is no need for you any more. And how long will we obediently fall in line to beg for our lives?
The same curses and spells that lead our ancestors to slavery, and the same curses and spells that our ancestors were in during slavery are still here. Now they have got to be broken for us to survive. Elijah Muhammad tried to warn us a long time ago. Who we are and who the enemy is, and how to defeat the enemy.
