Palm Pre Owners Step This Way

WolfensteinPreD4.png

Weren't we just saying that gaming on the Pre was going to be better than you might have expected? Yes, yes we were. In those selfsame Palm Gaming forums we just mentioned, Indecom has posted screenshots and a quick progress log for Wolfenstein Pre-D. It's running at 25-33 frames per second in the emulator, hopefully we'll see similar results when it runs on device.

The most exciting part: it's all build with standard Palm Mojo SDK Magic:

This game currently uses nothing other than standard javascript, html, and css. I'm not using canvas, not yet anyways. The main goal of Wolfenstein Pre-D is to reproduce the shareware episode of Wolfenstein 3D as accurately as i can on the pre while still making it playable, fun, and run smoothly.

3D textures, 3D positioned sprites, a simple enemy AI, weapon switching, it's all already here. Indecom is planning on just reproducing the shareware parts until permission for the whole game comes (note: Carmack open sourced the Wolfenstein code some time ago [via TiPb], so we're hoping this won't be difficult).

Gaming on the Pre is starting to feel very exciting. Nice job so far, Indecom!

Thanks to PreGame for the tip!

no movies or vids you download via itunes will play on the pre since all itunes vids have DRM enabled
you must convert them to drm-free mp4 vids

you can use your phone as a broadband connection
tethering makes the phone into a network device for your pc/mac - it basically becomes something similar to a cable modem

Whatever the next WebOS device is it has to come with removable memory.

I'm having a hard time deciding what all I want to put on here because 6.69 gigs isn't enough.

yup...I knew I would see at least one user run into this....

this was my main caveat with getting the pre. Thus I'm waiting on the next version.

Space is crucial. I have been running android on my Att Tilt WinMo phone for a couple of weeks now and that Martket Place (androids app store) is crucial...I'm installing apps all the time couple that with music...and a bigger amount of space is mos def needed.

the next webOS device unfortunatley only had 4gb of space with no expansion slot

Yep.

After I add G.I. Joe to the phone then my memory is shot.

I can always take movies off/on but having removable memory would have been a nice option.

I'm still loving the phone though and I haven't even done any of the home brew stuff.

Makk you get that MAC info for me yet? I have a PC at work should I just do it on the PC??
Just did it bruh

http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Tutorials_webOS_Installing_An_Ipk#WebOS_Quick_Install_Method

Just follow that and it takes 5 minutes if that

WebOS Quick Install Method
Program Installation
Java 1.6 Required

Make sure you're up to date with Java. With this program, Java 1.6 is needed.

* For Mac OS X, once you've installed Java 1.6, run /Application/Utilities/Java/Java Preferences. Then click and drag Jave SE 6 to top of both list, and exit the program. This will set Java 1.6 as the default version to use.

WebOS Quick Install Setup

* Download WebOS Quick Install.
* On launch, it will look to see if you have WebOSDoctor downloaded and will download it for you if its not found.
o If you already have WebOSDoctor, close WebOS Quick Install and move it to the same folder as WebOS Quick Install.
* On first launch, there will be a first-time setup popup asking which device you want to use.
o For the emulator, choose "Emulator"
o For a real device, like the Palm Pre, choose "USB Device"
* Also during first launch, WebOS Quick Install will attempt to install Novacom for you.

Preparing Your Device

Not much is needed on the device-end of setup. Ignore these requirements if you're using WebOS Quick Install with the emulator.

* Developer mode enabled.
* When you plugin your device for use with WebOS Quick Install, choose "Just Charge".

Usage

You can press the "+" button or simply drag and drop .ipk files onto the window and they'll be added to the the transfer queue. Then just press the "Install!" button and the rest is automatic

In addition, WebOS Quick Install offers uninstall functionality to cleanly uninstall applications remotely.

And for those who prefer to frequently enable and disable DevMode, there is also an option to unhide the application so it will appear in the launcher
Other Features

* No Linux knowledge needed
* Full device information section.
* Support for receiving individual files off of the device
* Support for sending indifidual files to the device
* Support for deleting files/folders on the device
* Quick-access link to the PreCentral homebrew forums.

its just
#1 edit java preferences OSX
#2 download the webos quick installer http://www.filefront.com/14171159/WebOSQuickInstall.jar
#3 set the phone for developer mode http://developer.palm.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1552#dev_mode
(all that is is putting in a code upupleftright etc)

youre done
cant imagine anyone having any problem with that

then u just drag apps to the installer or install the app store program

The only thing that sucks about the phone is that the battery life is pretty bad. With moderate web browsing and and music player, your shit will completely drain out a few hours. If you're on WIFI, or doing talking on the phone, it will drain out faster.

Any solutions for the battery.

Plus a lot of people tell me it sounds like I'm muffling on the phone when I talk.

I just got the palm pre and this phone is the sh!t. Anyone know where I could get a good case.
I bought my hard case at BestBuy for like $20. You can get one that has the belt clip or without it. I prefer no belt clip & just keep the phone in my pocket. Make sure you get up on the homebrew apps as well. This thread has the links to point you in the right direction.

Putty is just a telnet or SSH client... it will allow you to access the linux based internals of your pre

http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html

I haven't done that yet... that will be my next step in tinkering with this phone... so I can't tell you how to do it, but there are tutorials that I have seen laying around.

I hope they upgrade the Pre chess game... b/c the computer isn't that strong on this one.

I really hope they add some directional keys to a future release... it would help with making the cut and paste more exact.

I'm happy as hell I left Verizon for the Pre so far. The more I use the phone the more I like it. And, I lucked out and got one of the newer versions (with the sunset box). Never had a problem with the sliding mechanism, screen, or the battery coming loose.

A year from now there will be some hard core shit going with developers using this phone.

Just found a tip for you guys trying to eek out more battery life... you may want to consider changing your email settings from a set interval (like every 5 minutes) to 'get items as they arrive'. If you don't get a crazy volume of email then this will actually let your pre check the server less often since the email server is telling your pre to wake up and come get the new messages.

If you get email nonstop all day long, then that change may not help battery life, b/c it will constantly be working. In any case, it may be worth a short experiment to see how it helps.

were is dat option at

1. Open the email app.
2. then click on the email menu in the top left hand of the screen
3. then click on the account you want to change
4. now inside of the account screen, scroll down to the sync area... there you should see an option for get email... and in that drop down list you can set the frequency to get as they arrive, or check every 5 minutes, or 15 minutes, etc

that's about it... i think this option is only available for exchange servers, or for IMAP connections... so if you have a POP3 email account setup this may not work

i think using push will kill more power than changin the interval to like every 30/15 minutes
I have 3 imap and 1 exchange account setup.
#1 battery killer is a bad coverage area

man there needs to be a way to force roaming too

Since push is initiated by the mail server, there can be long periods where ur pre just chills, as opposed to checking every 5 mins. So unless you get a lot of email all day long push may save energy. I think it may depend on the user but I like getting email instantly like the bb users, and I don't have crazy volume. Time will tell.

Now that I'm comfortable surfing bgol from the pre I'm going to lose any benefit that push saves me tho. Lol

Palm is feeling their Wheaties today, they just added six more apps to the official App Catalog. Let's see what we got:

* Shabbat Shalom helps those of the Jewish faith (or those merely interested) know candle lighting times
* Kosher2Go is a YARF (Yet Another Restaurant Finder) that specializes in finding Kosher restaurants
* ESPN Zoom is one of those picture apps where you find the differences between two photos. This is not the first app we expected to see with ESPN branding, but whatever
* Bubbles! is your standard fare bubble pop game, not unlike Pre Dot Pop found in our Homebrew Forums
* Mileage Monitor monitors your gas mileage
* Word Ace "combined the betting and strategy of Texas Hold'em and the mental challenge of a word game." It's also good to note that it was featured at preDevCamp!

Nice adds, Palm. Keep 'em coming! Incidentally, we added six apps to our Homebrew App Gallery today too, three RPGS from moblyng, LDS Scriptures, MortCalc, and PreCandy.

I was just about to post that too. Great to see more apps

Anybody got a link to old Palm software?

I'm thinking about purchasing that Palm emulator but I want to make sure I've got access to some applications to make it worth while.

If I buy it I will post it.

anyone try the1350 battery upgrade from seidio?
thinkin bout gettin it since you can use it with the touchstone

We have more apps in the homebrew category to play with now including an Android simulation app. I'm bout to test it out myself.

you cheap bastards havent copped another battery at all?
I haven't. I have a car charger & an extra micro usb cable on my pc so i have a charging location at the 3 main places where I always am. No major need for a replacement battery. Plus I don't know if there's a hard case cover available that would fit the new battery door.
