Vonetta Lawrence McGee was an actress. She debuted in the Spaghetti Western The Great Silence and went on to appear in blaxploitation films such as Hammer, Melinda, Blacula, Shaft in Africa, Detroit 9000, and 1974's Thomasine & Bushrod alongside her then-boyfriend Max Julien.
Muriel Burrell Smith was a singer. In the 1940s and 1950s, she was a star of musical theater and opera, and was also the off-film ghost singer in several hit movies.
Bette McLaurin is an American singer best known for her jazz-influenced ballad and R&B performances in the 1950s. Two of her recordings, "I May Hate Myself In The Morning" and "Only A Rose" reached the Billboard pop charts. She was born in North Carolina.
If you saw the movie The Posse, Woody Strode was the old man at the end who was portraying the older version of the kid in the movie.
Woodrow Wilson Woolwine Strode was an athlete and actor. Strode was a college track and football star at UCLA, one of the first Blacks to integrate the NFL, a professional wrestler, a Golden Globe nominated actor, and a WWII veteran. He attended UCLA and played alongside Jackie Robinson and Kenny Washington, both who broke the color barriers of baseball and football in the 1940s. Strode joined UCLA’s Alpha Phi Alpha chapter. He is probably best remembered for his brief Golden Globe-nominated role in Spartacus (1960) as the Ethiopian gladiator Draba, in which he fights Kirk Douglas to the death.

Leslie Marian Uggams is an actress and singer. Beginning her career as a child in the early 1950s, Uggams is recognized for portraying Kizzy Reynolds in the television miniseries Roots, earning Golden Globe and Emmy Award nominations for her performance.
Diana Patricia Sands was an actress. She appeared in film, theater and television. I enjoyed watching her on Raisin In the Sun and The Landlord.
Hotcha Drew entertained the audience with her tapping skills in the 1930’s.
Bessie Dudley is recognized by many dancers for her work with Florence Hill in the Duke Ellington short film Bundle of Blues (Dudley wears the white costume during the song 'Bugle Call Rag'), but she also worked with Earl 'Snake Hips' Tucker as a partner dancer, appearing in Symphony in Black.

As an author her best known work is her autobiography "It's Good To Be Black." Which won a Commonwealth Gold Medal for the best nonfiction book by a California writer. Her other books include, "A Gold Star Mother Speaks" and "From My Kitchen Window." Before launching her career as an actress, she was the personal secretary and publicist for Oscar winning actress Hattie McDaniel and singer and actress Ethel Waters. As an actress Ms. Goodwin appeared in several films and television shows.
Matilda Sissieretta Joyner Jones was an American soprano. She sometimes was called "The Black Patti" in reference to Italian opera singer Adelina Patti. Jones' repertoire included grand opera, light opera, and popular music.

Kim Hamilton was a film and television actress, as well as a director, writer, and artist. Her career spanned more than half a century, from the early 1950s to 2010. Hamilton's early film credits included the 1959 film noir Odds Against Tomorrow opposite Harry Belafonte and The Leech Woman in 1960.
.Annie Lee Morgan (Jeannie ) is a former Playboy Playmate of the Month (October 1969) and was only the second African American woman to feature in this role. She also became the first-ever African American to actually grace the magazine's cover of their January 1970 issue. Bell later had a career as an actress in movies, most prominently in TNT Jackson (1975), in which she played the title character, and supporting roles in Mean Streets and The Klansman, as well as occasional TV appearances.
Ruth Bayton was an entertainer who first went to Europe as a chorus girl with Florence Mills in the hit play, Blackbirds. In 1927, she also appeared as an opening act for comedic actor Valeriano Ruiz Paris, dancing the "Black-Bottom Stomp" and the "Charleston" at the Teatro Comico in Barcelona, Spain. A painting of her still exists on the walls of the Paris Odeon.
Norma Miller, a dancer, comedian and big-band singer whose acrobatic flips, slides, leaps and twists helped popularize the Lindy Hop dance craze of the 1930s and ’40s, earning her the title “Queen of Swing.”
Sissieretta Matilda Joyner Jones performed for several presidents of the United States, the Prince of Wales and the Kaiser and at places like the Chicago World's Fair and Madison Square Garden. She was barred from performing at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Despite this, she had many successes, some of which qualify as breakthroughs.

Carol Channing was well known for her performances on Broadway, film and television.She was a Comedian, Actress and Singer. Did you know Carol passed for white? At the age of 16, Carol learned her paternal grandmother was a black woman. Although, she knew the truth, Carol never shared it with anyone until at the age of 81 in her memoir “Just Lucky I Guess.” She kept her heritage a secret so she would not be typecast on Broadway and in Hollywood. Carol Channing publicly revealed her African-American ancestry in 2002.
When she admitted it…it didn’t seem surprising.
In my opinion Carol seemed to be “overly comfortable” with many Black entertainers of that period.
