On par with Iron Man. Better fight scenes; weaker character development. Weaker lead actor, too.
Captain America sucked.
Action-wise, its closer to Thor in scale. Thor had some good action scenes but an underdeveloped plot and one dimensional characters. Kat Dennings was a punch line character in Thor. That's ALL she did.
The fight scenes in Superman were longer, which makes them seem more epic but I have seen better fight scenes in martial arts movies.
Also, nothing in Superman could touch Neo vs 100 Agent Smiths in Matrix 2.

At the end of the day it's all about personal preference and perception. While the plot was in no ways mentally challenging, I read things into it; paying attention to facial expressions, body language, interactions, etc. This all left me feeling very satisfied with the plot.
I can remember one scene where it's just Clark and Lois (no dialogue), and I'm thinking, this is a very potent scene. I felt like that one scene (as an example) depicted the moment when you have butterflies cause you're really intrigued with/attracted to someone, but don't know them well enough for things to progress romantically; very well. Another example for me was a simple, but very guttural expression near the end of the film.
These moments, though lacking dialogue were very powerful plot devices IMO, and the movie was chalked full of them. It wasn't Tolstoy, but I thought it was a very good movie.
Also, the action had me on the edge of my seat. There's a difference between explosions for explosions sake (Transformers) and a wildly destructive battle of epic proportions. MOS had the latter. It was a battle of equals and at no time did I feel like Superman was easily going to prevail, or that any of the combat choices he made, were easy to make. Great film. By the way, my sons who are just as likely to fall asleep on a long movie, as they are to get bored with a film no matter the level of action; loved the movie. They have it ranked higher than Batman, Iron Man 3, and the Avengers.

Why is everybody comparing this to the Dark Knight and Avengers?
Shouldn't it be compared more to say a Batman Begins or Ironman since we all know its the first of a possible trilogy and the beginning of DC's shared universe.

Well obviously, if the movie were to be more engaging the movie would have to be written differently than it was. That's not an amazing conclusion.
Krypton was 20 minutes out of a 2 and a half hour movie. The rest of the story was pretty blah. The script wasn't great.
There wasn't much suspense to the movie...a lot of pretty action, bland characters, weak dialogue, rehashed themes...and nothing that interesting.
That all takes away from the movie.
It's not my job to tell them how to write an interesting story, if the story is bland as fuck, the characters one dimensional, etc... that's on them not us.
But I'm not shitting on the movie. It's a decent summer blockbuster, awesome visual and entertaining enough.
If they want to go for greatness than come with a more interesting story. I'm not giving charity rating just because of special effects.

This is the shit I been trying to tell folks. It is the story of how a Superman would work in the real world. How he copes with living as a god amongst men. And how those same men fear and revile him because he is so different.
My homeboy's son, a comic book freak, said he LOVED this film last night. It made people see Superman as a man as well as a hero.

I agree. The movie lacked depth, but I did enjoy it. It could have been better if you were actually felt to care about the characters.
