Official Chicago Bears Off-Season Thread

Glad we're interested in a tight end

Didn't know that Marinelli and Lovie were that tight. I hate that he went to Dallas.

DJ Moore was lucky he stuck around after running his mouth to the media about the Cutler/Webb incident.

Cook would be an ENORMOUS upgrade at TE from Davis' sorry ass.

Bears | Brian Urlacher working toward 2013

Tue, 05 Mar 2013 17:56:45 -0800

Impending free-agent LB Brian Urlacher (Bears) is apparently preparing to play his 14th NFL season, posting a photo on his official Twitter account with a message that read, "Can't wait for the season to start -- BU #gettingitdone." Head coach Marc Trestman and general manager Phil Emery have not publicly let on one way or the other which way they are leaning as far as bringing Urlacher back. However, the apparent feeling within the organization is that Urlacher remains an important piece on defense and worthy of another contract with the club.

Glad we're keeping Melton

Didn't really want Bennett, dude disappears

Thought we were going after one of the top two TE's in the draft

So with this OT signing I'll assume that we'll be taking a LB(Teo or Ogletree) in the 1rst round.
It's good to see that the front office has finally decided to address the O-line with a proven player.

On day one they sign a big/athletic/reletively young TE thats a red zone target and a great blocker and a pro bowler Tackle. And I heard theyre not finish with the OL. I know Cutler is happier than a mofo so far.

Bears aint bullshittin around. Hope they resign Urlacher. He aint what he used to be, but he should retire a Bear. Hope they keep Melton (great dt) and Wooton as well.

BEARS!!!!!!!!

Don't sleep on Kevin Minter from LSU. That dude is a tackling machine and can get off blocks

I am ecstatic about the moves. We are instantly better on offense. WE have a LT and Webb will be moved back to RT where he belongs. We need to sign a guard, draft a developmental center (4th round or later).

I want Urlacher back but if Alec Ogletree falls to #20 then you have to take him. He has top 5 talent. If Ogletree is not there at #20 take a RT and move Webb to guard until Lance Louis returns (that would give us a mid 90's Cowboys O-Line size wise). If Ogletree is there at #20, take him and say goodbye to Urlacher. Then focus on a guard (if we don't get one in free agency)in the second. And then add depth at C, DT, DE, WR, CB, and QB in no particular order.

On a side note, if the offense sucks this year with an improved line, TE, and the investment in receivers last year (Marshall and Jeffrey) the blame will fall squarely on Cutler's shoulders and we need to prepare for that opportunity in this draft where some quality QB's will be available in the 2nd and 3rd like, Matt Barkley and E.J. Manual!

call me crazy....but I was hoping that the Bears would trade away the first round pick...along with Hester and some other player...so they could get someone with experience either on the OL or in the defense. And I say trade Hester because he is basically done at WR....and since they ruined his return game...what use is he? He still got nice speed..but still.

Yep! Thats why theyre not working on Cutlers new contract just yet. Theyre gonna put some legit help around him to see if he can perform like a franchise type QB. If he doesnt...then he wont be here in the coming years.

First off, thanks for the updates chops.

Secondly, I like the direction Phil is taking the franchise so far.

These first two FA signings have put us in a better position to draft the best player available. If one of the top OL or LB drops, we can take them and not have to worry about putting them in and expecting them to beast day one. Hell if one those guards like Cooper or Warmack drop, they just might. If one of the LBs drop, we can put them on at the SLB and let them learn for a year from Urlacher and Briggs since its seems like the DC is running a system similar to Lovie's.

Trestman: Hester strictly a return specialist

By Dan Pompei, Tribune reporter

10:26 AM CDT, March 20, 2013Advertisement

PHOENIX — Chicago Bears coach Marc Trestman made it clear Wednesday that Devin Hester is a return specialist only and not a wide receiver.

“Devin is strictly a specialist right now,” Trestman said at a breakfast with the media at the NFL annual meetings.

Trestman said he is not sure if that might change, but he said the priority is making sure Hester is the best return man he can be. He also said he thinks Hester feels good about what his role will be.

Here are some other nuggets from Trestman’s media session:

*The read option, which Trestman used in Canada, will be a part of the Bears’ offensive package.

*He expects second year wide receiver Alshon Jeffery to step into the starting lineup.

*He believes Jay Cutler can improve his mechanics. He also said Cutler has as much throwing ability as anyone he has coached.

*Trestman reiterated his belief that Brian Urlacher has value as a middle linebacker.

“We think he can help our football team, no doubt about it.”

Trestman said Bears management is “actively working to resolve the issue.”

You know what though the toeing of the line between avg-good(Never really great) that the Bears have been doing the last 6-8 years needs to go. That starts at the top. When there are no impact players to really be had, fuck is patch shit up for a year and either draft a long term solution, or take your chances next year in FA. This team needs a new direction and I respect him for setting the tone for how shits going to be. Players arent victims, they get paid for their services. If you dont bring a premium service, you dont get premium money.

The issue with the Bears isnt that their cheap. Pittsburg, NE, GB etc are cheap too. Its that they dont win enough for fans to give them the benifit of the doubt that they know what their doing. IMO Phil gets an A for what hes done so far. Hes basically blowing the team up without really going into the dumps.

Yeah man Emery gets an A from me as well. The cleanup job that he has to do because of what Jerry Angelo left behind. I mean they have no players in the mix who could step up because of how horrible Angelo was drafting. No replacement for Urlacher, no young QB to develop just in case things don't work out with Cutler and the list goes on.(offenseive Line) So there is a lot more work to be done but I like what he is doing so far. Will it work I don't know but hopefully it will.

Urlacher's being a whiny bitch right now. They redid his deal twice while he was a Bear when they didn't have to. He's been more than accommodated. They:lol: might have known he wouldn't take the deal but its pretty weak for him to say they insulted him and he would play for the same amount somewhere else.

Emery needs to send Bas Rutten to his house to square his ass away. Bang bang bang

Vids arent showing but yeah. Brain is under the impression that in football, what youve done in the past determines what your value is.:smh: I think he may have some left in the tank if he gets healthy but no team is going to pay him considerably more than 2 mil a year with whats on film the last few years. Whats going to hurt is the illusion that they dont treat players "right" and Brian is yet another instance in which the Bears dont look out for their own.

Plus he's not a every down LB anymore

Minnesota already told him that 3.5 :smh:
Dallas told him we have Sean Lee

I doubt he gets 2 mil, maybe less than that with incentives

He might wish he didn't make the comments he did, because he seemed to draw the line in the sand. If he keeps his house around Chicago, and then has to pay for a residence in another city for a year...he wouldn't come out ahead at all.

Matt Slauson, Bears agree on deal
By Michael C. Wright
ESPNChicago.com

The Chicago Bears continued to fortify the offensive line for 2013 as the team agreed to terms on a one-year contract with former New York Jets guard Matt Slauson.

ESPNChicago.com Bears blog

"The Jets were in contention, but they couldn't match what the Bears were offering," Slauson said. "The Jets weren't offering any long-term security."

It's expected that Slauson will fill the void at right guard created by the departure of free agent Lance Louis, who bolted to join the Miami Dolphins.

"We are excited that Matt will be a Bear," Bears general manager Phil Emery said in a statement. "He brings physical play and smarts to the offensive guard position, and to the offensive line as an overall unit. His size, strength, and power will allow him to challenge for either of the starting guard positions."

Slauson (6-5, 315 pounds) came into the NFL as a sixth-round pick in 2009 of the Jets, and has started in 48 of his last 51 games. He said leaving New York had to do with his future, not that the Jets are rebuilding.

"No, that didn't have anything to do with it," he said.

Slauson didn't give up a sack in 2012, and after becoming a full-time starter for the Jets in 2010, the club rushed for 2,374 yards that season, 1,692 yards in 2011 and 1,896 yards last season.

Although Slauson started every game in 2012, the veteran actually split time at the position with Vlad Ducasse. Jets offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo reportedly said the club's decision to play Ducasse was a directive that came from above him. But head coach Rex Ryan dismissed that notion, according to reports.

With Slauson in the fold, the Bears have added two new players along the offensive line whom they hope to meld with veterans Roberto Garza, J'Marcus Webb, Gabe Carimi and Jonathan Scott. At this point, the only starting jobs settled for the upcoming season are Garza's center position and Jermon Bushrod's left-tackle spot.

So we got: Bushrod at LT, Slauson at one G spot, Scott at the other, Garza, Spencer (both fighting for C?), Webb, Carimi...

Who is the projected LT?

I'll assume that you mean RT. I would guess Webb since Carimi struggled over there last year.

They're saying Webb/Carimi/Jonathan Scott will compete for RT with Bushrodon the left. Also Carimi will get a look at guard especially with Louis off to Miami.

Bears | Matt Slauson can play either OG spot

Fri, 29 Mar 2013 13:56:30 -0700

Chicago Bears OG Matt Slauson said he can play either left guard or right guard for the team next season. "I have a lot of experience at both. If they put me on the right side, it'll take me a couple of practices to get that comfort level back," he said. "But I'll play wherever they want me to." Yeah, I saw this yesterday, Josh is back and Campbell went to Cleveland

Makes me wonder who the Bears will draft at QB..... new coach usually gets a QB to work on. ESP with Trestman being so involved in the training of QBs working up to the Draft.

At first, I was upset with Campbell leaving.... but then I was cool with it... he didn't seem to adjust too well in Chicago. Could've just as easily been Mike Tice's system.
